I am researching Freelove Mills which has proved to be very difficult due mainly to the courthouse burning down in Catahoula and Rapides Parishes. I am a descendant of Uriah Mills (Ruth's brother)and I got my aunt to do a DNA test with DNAtribes.com to test for our Native American line. Surprisingly, the result came back as mostly Apache. I did not see how that could be until I saw the Choctaw-Apache tribe in Louisiana. I have pictures of headstones of the Mills family in Farris Cemetery on the Slaughter/Barrington family tree. There is also a book that is online which has information and some pictures on the Mills family at www.wcgen.com. Do you have any old pictures of the Mills family?

Denise Slaughter
I have seen it recorded in a Shannon family pedigree chart noting that Ruth Mills Shannon was a Cherokee Indian from LA. It was recorded years ago, before my time, in 1970s. How do you know Freelove was indian??? Thanks. Looking for any pics of Freelove and William. Any and all information that anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Have a blessed day.

Here's another line to add to the Mills family tree. William and Freelove's third child, Ruth (Rutha) Mills married a Jonas SHannon in Texas. Have a copy of the record. They had several boys, Joseph Ford SHannon, born in 1864, walker county, tx. He migrated north to the German community and married a german girl named Nettie Schrader Shannon. THey moved to indian territory around the turn of the century. Had John Lafayette Shannon, Lena, Bobbie, Tissy, Simon, Uriah and some others. I have Joseph Ford Shannon's funeral home record and misc family photos. Ruth mills shannon was buried in Liliac cemetery, Tx. Close to Devilla. Freelove and WIlliam Mills are my husbands gggg great grandparents. THis ties the Shannon family into the picture. SOmeone had recorded that Ruth was Cherokee indian from LA. This is all I have. It was written on a pedigree chart long before my time. Any info to share, please email. Thanks.

Hi, I don't know how helpful my info will be because I don't have all my info and can't say for sure it's fact. My great grandmother was Jesse Leona Brooks. I knew her as a kid. She lived to her nineties. I hear that her grand parents raised her but don't have any info on her parents. From what another relative found on the web it is possible her grand parents were Freelove Slocum and Nathaniel Brooks.

Freelove/Slocum/Heisner?

My great grandmother told my aunt once that she remembered that her GGrandmother was named Freelove. My aunt always thought that was a last name, but now we are curious if it was somehow Freelove Slocum of Cpt. Paul Cuffe/Cuffe Slocum/Ruth Moses line. However, I can't trace it. I know that my GGrandmother's father's name was Archibald Slocum and that it appears his father was Albert Joseph Slocum. The mother is listed in a Slocum book as Amanda V Freelove but her death date is listed there as 8/8/1869 and Archie was born February 4, 1871. I also found a baptism record that lists his mother's name instead as Angelian Freelove. I don't know and can't find anything on this person. The book citing says that Amanda's father was Rodney Freelove. They were in Locke and Moravia.. they also were in RI and PA, we think, but that could be information from Freelove Slocum and might not be connected. We know the Locke and Moravia are the right locations because that is where most of my current family is from. Does anyone have any information on Amanda V Freelove, Rodney Freelove, Archibald Albert Slocum, Albert Joseph Slocum, Ebenezer Slocum, Ezra Slocum? I can't seem to find anything. My GGrandmother's name was Ada (Adah) Enola Slocum Heisner. She used to always tell us we were related to a native american tribe and that her GGrandmother was a pure bred Indian, but I can't trace this information and I would really like to. Please let me know if you have any information at loverlys1@yahoo.com.

Thanks so much! Its pretty important we find some clues.

Hi Hazel

Can you tell me which state your Freeloves are from. I notice you mention towns in your message, but many states have the same town names. There is a New Haven, Connecticut and there is also a New Haven, Vermont. I've been to both. My Freeloves are from Massachusettes. I also have a great great grandmother that had a brother William Freelove. He was in I believe the spanish-american war and possible the civil war.

Thanks,
Holly

Hello Helen

Sorry that it has taken so long for a reply but I haven't been doing much on the family history for a while, I am afraid that other things have got in the way. I think there is a connection between the Rookards and Rookyards. But as yet been unable to find it. I only have my 3xGt, 2xGt and Gt Grandfathers. My Gt Grandfather was born 1827 in Wacton, Norfolk. I haven't found any brothers or sisters for him. The Rookyards seemed appear in Suffolk around the same period. As they were country folk who couldn't read or write I believe that some Rookards moved to Suffolk and became Rookyards. It is somrthing that I am still working on when possible. So I think there is a chance that your Grandfather could be a missing link. Have you any further information that may help. You can always contact mt direct.
Best Wishes
Alan Rookard

Also a Job Freelove married 1855, Dec, Lewes, 2b 260. I am afraid I can't go back any further on your line. But if I can be of any further help please contact me direct.

Mary Chase Freelove was my great great grandmother. She was the daughter of Barney Freelove. She was referred to as The Princesses. My mother's cousin has a picture of Clark's father dressed in his full Indian clothing and stated that he was a chief. She couldnt remember his name, but her daughter did some research and has it, (but I have yet to hear from her). She also stated that he was buried in Tiverton, RI, in the Indian Burial grounds. The info came from Rhode Island historial society, but I do not want to make the trip until I have at least his name. Mary was married to George W. Baker but I do not have info on him yet. Mary's brother William Tabor Freelove was in the Spanish-American War. Also I found on the Morman site Familysearch.org info on Rebecca J. Tripp, (married to Clark Freelove), quite a few generations back on her. Back to John Tripp, the founder of Rhode Island.

Clark Freelove is my great-great-great grandfather, through his son Leonard S. Freelove and Leonard's daughter Emma (Freelove) Gifford, my great-grandmother. In the 1850 census for Westport Clark Freelove, age 54, is listed as a farmer, with Rebecca (Tripp) age 46 and sons Leonard, 17, a sailor, Alexander, 15, laborer, Joseph, 21, sailor and Clark Jr. 21 laborer. Barney is in a separate household by that time.

I have never been able to find Clark's ancestry, although I have two other lines of Freelove ancestry that were easily traced. What is your source that he was the son of an Indian chief? That's a new one on me, but the funny thing is that where these families lived on the Westport/Fall River line was the site of a Wampanoag Indian reservation in the 1700s and the area was called "Indian Town."
