The Freese family is not directly related to me, so I am not collecting data or photos. I inherited the items I have from a cousin who was related to the Freese family on her father's side.
She did not have children and I want to give the items I have to someone who is researching the Freese family.

This Freese family lived in the area of Elgin, Illinois. The cities in that part of Illinois are small enough and the name Freese unusual enough, that I think anyone with the name Freese who is still living there may be related to the family you are researching. I suggest that you explore this line of inquiry, if you have not.

FREESE is one of the surnames in the 1928 Galion High School yearbook (Crawford County) that has been scanned and placed online at

There is a list of alumni included that spans 1871 through 1927. Every page has been scanned, including the advertising. Even the ads have a lot of history. There are many autographs in the book. The book has all proper names OCR'd so that you can do a surname search in the searchbox at the top of the page.

Yes, they divorced inthe early 20's and Robert,Sr. Then married Jessie and lived in Colorado Springs. They had no children of whom I am aware. There were several Freeses in Colorado prior to the arrival of Robert. I have the specific information at my home.

What was your grandfather's first name?
Watson was the name of he doctor who delivered Robert,Sr.
My grandfather left for Colorado in 1919 leaving behind his wife, Helen, and 2 sons, Robert Watson, Jr., 7 yrs., and Charles Scully Bailey, 5 yrs.
My father, Robert Watson, Jr., died September 23, 2009.
Before my father died, I kept a journal of his earlier as he unveiled it and have searched for validation on my own. It is a bittersweet story.

Robert W. Freese, Sr. is the son of Henry W. Freese. His first wife was Helen Slayton. I'm not sure what happened to her -- divorce or death. I have asked the other person who posted info on Robert Watson? Freese where the Watson came from. I have been trying to discover what the W. stood for and that is a very off-th-wall name for the Freese family.

My Freese's are from Illinois. The farthest I've been able to trace back is my 4th great grandfather, R. Eden Freese (1820-1866). R. Eden's son was Edo Reinhart (1845-1938), and Edo's son was Reinhart Martin (1873-1922). Reinhart's daughter Althea was my grandfather's (Vernon Diercks) mother.

R. Eden came to the U.S. aboard the ship "Alfred" in 1854 with his wife Helene Behrens(1804-1883) and their children Wilhelmine(1836-1917)Hayen, Maria(1839-1930)Plagge, Edo(my 3rd great grandfather)Friedericke(1847-1933)Harms and Gerhard(1849-1868)

I've found that many Freese's came from a region in Germany called Osterfriesen, which is located in the NW corner of Germany, bordered by The Netherlands and the North Sea.

The Osterfriesen Genealogical Society has been the source of a lot of good information http://www.ogsa.us/

Last seen on 1920 census at Milwaukee Protestant Home for the Aged. He was an awning maker and previously a sail maker / sailor.

They married 1896, but I cant find record of it. Only know her first name.

I can trace his family backwards, but not forwards. Haven't found any kids.

WILTON, Iowa - Michael W. Freese, 51, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at his home in Wilton after an extended illness due to Melanoma Cancer.

Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Ostrem of the Zion Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Iowa City Hospice Program or the Zion Lutheran Church.

Michael was born on June 5, 1951, in Muscatine, the son of Carl H. 'Snow' and Dorothy M. Nicklas Freese. He married Nealene A. Rigdon Maurer on April 4, 2003, in Muscatine.

He worked as a Sales Representative for Nabisco in Iowa City since 1985.

Prior to moving to Wilton, he had resided in North Liberty since 1994.

He was a 1969 graduate of Muscatine High School. He attended Muscatine Community College attaining is Associative of Arts Degree and then attended the University of Northern Iowa obtaining his Batchelor's Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Social Studies.

Mike was an avid golfer and liked the Hawkeye's, Yankee's and the Bear's.

He is survived by his wife Nealene Freese of Wilton; his father and step-mother, Carl and Marion Freese, of Muscatine; two step-daughters, Breanna and Brittany Maurer both of Wilton; one brother, David Freese of Cresco; two step-sisters, Judith Ann Dittman of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and Betty Crinklaw of Grand Junction, Colorado; and his best friends, Jim Compton of Cedar Rapids and Ann Morris of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Freese in 1971.

Ralph was born on March 6, 1918, in Muscatine, the son of William Fred and Minnie C. Henning Freese. He married Doris J. Eitman on June 4, 1939, in West Liberty.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in U.S. Army.

He was assistant postmaster for the Muscatine Post Office, retiring in 1977, after 33 years. He later worked for G.P.C. mailroom retiring in 1992.

For many years, he was active in the Mulford Evangelical Free Church and served as Sunday School Superintendent, was Church Chairman, and Deacon Chairman, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, and many other positions in the Church.

He was a member of the Muscatine Power and Water Board of Trustees from 1976 to 1981, and served as Chairman of the Board in 1981. He was a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission from 1982 until resigning to become the Fourth Ward Alderman where he served from 1990 to 1998. He was a member of the Muscatine Toastmasters Club No. 685, he delivered for Meals on Wheels, was a leader of the Boy Scouts, and volunteered for L.I.F.T. program of Family Resources now known as the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program.

He enjoyed baseball.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Freese of Muscatine; one daughter, Judy Seiler and husband, Ron, of Muscatine; two sons, Jim Freese and wife, Mary Ann of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Jay Freese and wife, Patty, of Muscatine; six grandchildren, Shelley Duffy, David Seiler, Scott Allen Freese, Scott Brian Freese, Jessica Freese and Jason Freese; four great-grandchildren, Max Seiler, Alex, Jake and Olivia Duffy; and two sisters, Leola Dittman of Muscatine and Dorothy V. She was a member of Mulford Evangelical Free Church for over 75 years where she served as Sunday School Superintendent of the Primary Department, coordinated Bible School and taught Children's Church. Later in life she attended Calvary Church and truly enjoyed the ladies Sunday School Class, Pastor Dan and Andy's music.

Doris loved her family and grandchildren. She loved to read, work crossword puzzles, crocheting, raising flowers, traveling and always enjoyed an adventure.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy Seiler and husband, Ron, of Muscatine; two sons, Jim Freese and wife, Mary Ann of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Jay Freese and wife, Patty, of Muscatine; six grandchildren, Shelley Duffy, David Seiler, Scott Allan Freese, Scott Brian Freese, Jessica Freese, and Jason Freese; four great-grandchildren, Max Seiler and Alex, Jake and Olivia Duffy; two sisters, Ruth Werner and husband, Wilfred 'Pickle', and Barbara Bartelt and husband Eddie, all of Muscatine; and several nieces and one nephew.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Thomas C. Freese, 58, of Rock Island, Ill., died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at his home.

According to his wishes, cremation will follow the service.

Mr. Freese was born July 5, 1948, in Muscatine, the son of Robert J. and Helen L. Turner Freese. He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

He worked as a home and industrial cleaner for Service Master and was a caregiver for In Touch in Moline for five years. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and bowling.

Survivors include his mother; sisters, Karen Wutzke and her husband, Robert, of Littleton, Colo. and Mardee Blunke and her husband, Skip, of Silvis; brother, Stephen Ward, of Moline; special nephew, James Johnson, of Coal Valley; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1995; and a brother, Chief Master Sgt. Gary C. Ward.

Mrs. Freese was born June 24, 1917, in Muscatine, the daughter of Charles and Hattie (Van Zyle) Turner.

She married Robert Freese Oct. 19, 1947, in Rock Island. He died in September of 1995.
She worked as a medical assistant for Dr. Kimberly in Davenport, retiring in 1985.

She was an excellent housekeeper who made sure her home was always well kept. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved her family deeply and will be missed by all.

Survivors include: two daughters, Karen and Robert Wutzke of Littleton, Colo. and Mardee and Skip Blunke of Silvis, Ill.; a son, Stephen Ward of Moline; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Giessregen of Muscatine; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church and attended Zion Lutheran Church.
She had worked at Sears, and also as a cook in the Muscatine School System.
She enjoyed reading, word puzzles, traveling, cooking and her family.
Survivors include her husband, Carl ‘Snow’ Freese of Muscatine; two daughter, Judith Ann Dittman of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and Betty E. Crinklaw and husband, Richard, of Grand Junction, Colorado; one step-son, David Freese of Calmar; four grandchildren, David Crinklaw and wife, Luanne, Doug Crinklaw, Kristine Rinderle and husband, David, Rick Crinklaw and wife, Kim; seven great-grandchildren, Brad, Austin, Madison, Shania, Wyatt, Hope and Nick; and good friends Joe and Krystyna Clarke.

Albert was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and was retired from Hahn Ready Mix-Sand and Gravel where he had worked for 33 years.

Survivors include his son Al Freese Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Muscatine, two grandchildren, Keith Freese of Muscatine and Kristi Wellman and her husband, Gary, of Dayton, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, Emily, Caleb and Luke Wellman; and one brother Carl Freese and his wife, Mariam, of Muscatine.

Her father may have been William and her mother may be Sarah Salome Platt. Susanna was born in OH in 1847. There are several Freese marriages in Marshall County in the 1860s. Does anyone know if these are Susanna's siblings?

I'm a Freese by birth - there are lots of us in northwest Iowa. Our ancestors came from Germany and settled in Illinois, then Iowa - my dad says we have relatives in SD and Minnesota, so you and I may be related! I, too, am seeking more information on the Freeses - I have posted a couple of responses to others in the hopes of finding connections.

My ancestors came from Germany - Freese's - and settled in Illinois and then Iowa. I'm not sure where else they settled before Illinois or after Iowa. My father told me we have some distant relatives in South Dakota and possibly Minnesota - possibly your husband is one of those. Now you say there are also Freese's in California - how interesting! I, too, would like to find out more.

There are lots of Freese's in northwest Iowa - it is a German name - my father, Marvin Freese, is full-blood German. His father was William Freese, and his father was Herman, whose father (name unknown) came from Germany to settle in Illinois, then later in Iowa. I would be interested in finding more of the Freese relatives and finding out more about relatives living in other states. Hope this helps.

He was a farmer and was a member of United Church of Christ, Clarence.

Services at the Fry Funeral Home in Tipton. The Rev. David Mears will officiate. Burial will be at Van Home Cemetery in Lowden.

Mrs. Muesing was born on Oct. 17, 1921, in Cedar County, the daughter of Charles and Sophie Brinkmann Freese. She married Marvin C. Muesing on Aug. 25, 1946, in Clarence.

She attended Clarence schools.

She was a nurses aide at Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Tipton for 27 years.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Clarence.

She loved working on the farm and at the nursing home. She enjoyed her chickens, cooking, gardening and canning.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Iola Ehlers and her husband, Ron, of Tipton; a son, Lynn Muesing and his wife, Rosie, of Davenport; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Foote of Mechanicsville; four grandchildren, Nick Ehlers, Nate Ehlers, Brad Muesing and Angela Compton; and a great-grandchild, Jaden Compton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Chris and Elmer.

Condolences to their family. At age of 88 Clyde died on Sunday, Dec 14, 2008, and his wife died the following day on Dec 15, 2008. What a loss for their family. I remember Uncle Clyde carrying my son just a few years ago and making him laugh by swirling and dancing with him. My grandma, Pearl, died in 1956 before I was born, and so I will miss her last remaining sibling.

Searching for ANY further info. on Norman E. 'Norm' FREESE. He m. Mary Annis WOODHAM July 1944 in Phenix City, Russell Co, AL. He was in the US Army during WW II, stationed in Germany & at Ft. Bragg, NC, Ft. Benning, GA + others of which I'm unaware. He enlisted at Ft. Riley, KS Apr 1941 in the Air Corps Branch as a Aviation Cadet.

Sometime about 1973 + or -, Norman FREESE & Mary Annis were divorced. Previously, they had adopted a daughter, Linda.

Any help appreciated.

MUSCATINE, Iowa - Ralph C. Freese, 86, Muscatine, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Unity Hospital.

Funeral Service will be at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Pastor Dan Schoepf of the Calvary Church will officiate. Honorary Bearers will be Dan Kraklow, Randy Hill, Brian Burke, Dr. Frank Schmidt, Don Gesell, Eddie Bartelt, and Wilfred ‘Pickle’ Werner. Casket bearers will be Pat McCormick, Corky Battey, Glen Moench, Ryan Schneider, Albert Lin, and Bob Fuson. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Roger Gerber American Missionary Fellowship in Wisconsin.

Ralph was born on March 6, 1918, in Muscatine, the son of William Fred and Minnie C. Henning Freese. He married Doris J. Eitman on June 4, 1939, in West Liberty.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in U.S. Army.

He was assistant postmaster for the Muscatine Post Office, retiring in 1977, after 33 years. He later worked for G.P.C. mailroom retiring in 1992.

For many years, he was active in the Mulford Evangelical Free Church and served as Sunday School Superintendent, was Church Chairman, and Deacon Chairman, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, and many other positions in the Church.

He was a member of the Muscatine Power and Water Board of Trustees from 1976 to 1981, and served as Chairman of the Board in 1981. He was a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission from 1982 until resigning to become the Fourth Ward Alderman where he served from 1990 to 1998. He was a member of the Muscatine Toastmasters Club No. 685, he delivered for Meals on Wheels, was a leader of the Boy Scouts, and volunteered for L.I.F.T. program of Family Resources now known as the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program.

He enjoyed baseball.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Freese of Muscatine; one daughter, Judy Seiler and husband, Ron, of Muscatine; two sons, Jim Freese and wife, Mary Ann of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Jay Freese and wife, Patty, of Muscatine; six grandchildren, Shelley Duffy, David Seiler, Scott Allen Freese, Scott Brian Freese, Jessica Freese and Jason Freese; four great-grandchildren, Max Seiler, Alex, Jake and Olivia Duffy; and two sisters, Leola Dittman of Muscatine and Dorothy V. Nietzel of Muscatine, and a special friend and (Little Brother), Brian Burke

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lillian Hoeksema, and one brother, Herb Freese.
I'm no relation he was a good friend to my uncle. Ralph was a very nice person.

I was wondering after reading your post from lonf ago(2004); that we may be related somehow through my great grandmother Eva Freese Pehnke from Chicago, IL. She had many siblings of which one could have been your relative. The time is right.
They had lived in Iowa for awhile, before they had nine children of their own. Eva's father was Christ and mother Christina Freese from Prussia.
