Hi Hugh,
I'm sorry to be contacting you in this way so I
hope you don't mind, but I notice you have an interest in Mary Ann Goullee b. 1844 Bethnal Green. I have connections with the Goullee family, my line coming from daughter of Paul Bachellier, Elisabeth, who married Gilbert Goullee. Then from there, their son Jacob, and his son Peter James.
I wonder if you recognise any of these names and would be really pleased to exchange details and e-mails if you agree.
Best wishes
Val

Hi Val

Can't really help you, sadly. Mary Ann Goullee is on my tree as the mother of William Windle, who married Caroline Louisa Mills, who was distantly descended from my Cambray ancestors.

Mary Ann Goullee is the only Goullee on my tree.

Good luck.

Hugh

Hello Val, I also have an interest in a Mary Ann Goullee (b.1844 in Bethnal Green)(nee Courtney). Not sure if this is the same person for whom you seek information. Mary Ann married a Robert Goullee and they had four children - Emma (b.1868), Margaret (b.1866), William (b.1861) and Alfred (b.1864). I am descended from Alfred, who immigrated to Australia. Hope this may be of some help. Regards - Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for your response. I see that Goullee was your Mary Ann's married and not her maiden name, so not the same one as mine. However, I am interested to know about your Robert Goullee - do you know his background, i.e. parents, grandparents etc.? There were so many Goullee families living in and around Bethnal Green at that time with such large families that I'm sure they were all related in some way.
Hope to hear more from you soon.
Regards
Val

Hello Val,
Thanks for your reply. Yes I think they were probably all related too.

My Robert Goullee (b.10/5/1841) had at least one brother, James (b.30/6/1838) and both were christened at St Matthias, Bethnel Green on 26/2/1843. Their parents were Joseph (a labourer) and Martha but I cannot find any further information on them. Robert Goullee was a cabinet maker, and he and his wife, Mary Anne Courtney (b.1841, Bethnal Green) had at least 4 children, Robert William, Alfred John, Eleanor Margaret and Emma. Alfred (b.9/4/1865), my great-grandfather immigrated to Australia and was a fireworks maker until his death in 1936 in Sunshine, Melbourne.

I have only identified one other Goullee family immigrating to Australia. A Charles Eugene Goullee immigrated from Bethnel Green to Bass in Tasmania about the same time as Alfred immigrated to Melbourne. Charles' son, Fredrick Goullee died in WWI without progeny. However he may have had a sister called Florence.

Pleased to supply any Australian input if this is at all helpful to you. Cheers - Carolyn.

Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for your info. I have found a Joseph and Martha in my collection of Goullee family units but still don't know who his parents were or where they fitted in.
However, in case it is of interest to you, I list below the details I have on them.
Joseph Goullee (born around 1800 I presume) married Martha Drayton 19/11/1825 (she was born in Stepney in 1804).
Their children:-
Martha c. 17/10/1826 St. Leonards Shoreditch
Joseph 1/ 7/1832 " "
(must have died young)
Sarah 10/ 8/1833 " "
Ann Sophia 6/12/1834 " "
Joseph 24/ 7/1837 Spitalfields, Stepney
James 30/ 6/1838 St. Matthews Bethnal Green
Robert 10/ 5/1841 " "
Marianne 13/ 1/1844 " "

No point in pursuing this line any further until I find out more about Joseph. Thanks again and I will keep you posted if anything turns up.
Val

Just a couple of amendments Carolyn on previous details,, just to keep the records straight. All the dates given were birth dates except for the two Josephs, and they were christenings. Also, Marianne christened at St. Leonards, Shoreditch and not Bethnal Green.
