Just a couple of amendments Carolyn on previous details,, just to keep the records straight. All the dates given were birth dates except for the two Josephs, and they were christenings. Also, Marianne christened at St. Leonards, Shoreditch and not Bethnal Green.

Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for your info. I have found a Joseph and Martha in my collection of Goullee family units but still don't know who his parents were or where they fitted in.
However, in case it is of interest to you, I list below the details I have on them.
Joseph Goullee (born around 1800 I presume) married Martha Drayton 19/11/1825 (she was born in Stepney in 1804).
Their children:-
Martha c. 17/10/1826 St. Leonards Shoreditch
Joseph 1/ 7/1832 " "
(must have died young)
Sarah 10/ 8/1833 " "
Ann Sophia 6/12/1834 " "
Joseph 24/ 7/1837 Spitalfields, Stepney
James 30/ 6/1838 St. Matthews Bethnal Green
Robert 10/ 5/1841 " "
Marianne 13/ 1/1844 " "

No point in pursuing this line any further until I find out more about Joseph. Thanks again and I will keep you posted if anything turns up.
Val

Hello Val,
Thanks for your reply. Yes I think they were probably all related too.

My Robert Goullee (b.10/5/1841) had at least one brother, James (b.30/6/1838) and both were christened at St Matthias, Bethnel Green on 26/2/1843. Their parents were Joseph (a labourer) and Martha but I cannot find any further information on them. Robert Goullee was a cabinet maker, and he and his wife, Mary Anne Courtney (b.1841, Bethnal Green) had at least 4 children, Robert William, Alfred John, Eleanor Margaret and Emma. Alfred (b.9/4/1865), my great-grandfather immigrated to Australia and was a fireworks maker until his death in 1936 in Sunshine, Melbourne.

I have only identified one other Goullee family immigrating to Australia. A Charles Eugene Goullee immigrated from Bethnel Green to Bass in Tasmania about the same time as Alfred immigrated to Melbourne. Charles' son, Fredrick Goullee died in WWI without progeny. However he may have had a sister called Florence.

Pleased to supply any Australian input if this is at all helpful to you. Cheers - Carolyn.

Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for your response. I see that Goullee was your Mary Ann's married and not her maiden name, so not the same one as mine. However, I am interested to know about your Robert Goullee - do you know his background, i.e. parents, grandparents etc.? There were so many Goullee families living in and around Bethnal Green at that time with such large families that I'm sure they were all related in some way.
Hope to hear more from you soon.
Regards
Val

Hello Val, I also have an interest in a Mary Ann Goullee (b.1844 in Bethnal Green)(nee Courtney). Not sure if this is the same person for whom you seek information. Mary Ann married a Robert Goullee and they had four children - Emma (b.1868), Margaret (b.1866), William (b.1861) and Alfred (b.1864). I am descended from Alfred, who immigrated to Australia. Hope this may be of some help. Regards - Carolyn

Mary Ann Goullee is on my tree as the mother of William Windle, who married Caroline Louisa Mills, who was distantly descended from my Cambray ancestors.

Mary Ann Goullee is the only Goullee on my tree.

Good luck.

Hugh

Hi Hugh,
I'm sorry to be contacting you in this way so I
hope you don't mind, but I notice you have an interest in Mary Ann Goullee b. 1844 Bethnal Green. I have connections with the Goullee family, my line coming from daughter of Paul Bachellier, Elisabeth, who married Gilbert Goullee. Then from there, their son Jacob, and his son Peter James.
I wonder if you recognise any of these names and would be really pleased to exchange details and e-mails if you agree.
Best wishes
Val

Too many Job Freeths

I am descended from Edwin Freeth, a pearl button maker from Birmingham b. 1811ish (according to census) and his second wife, Mary Knight (his first wife being Emma Haseler). I have just recieved the marriage certificate and his father is listed as Job Freeth, a brass founder. There is no sign of this Job Freeth in the census.

Having looked at the IGI it seems there are several options regarding who this Job Freeth may be, but have narrowed it down to two:
- Job Freeth born in 1767 in Harborne, Staffs, to a Job Freeth and Nancy (Smallwood); I think he had been married previously to Hannah and died in 1810
- Job Freeth chr in 1767 at Saint Philips, B'ham, and who was the son of John and Elizabeth Freeth.

I may have found the marriage of Edwin's parents: There is Job Freeth who married at Saint Philips in 1799 to Priscilla Cashmore, but no Edwin is listed amongst their children. There is also a Job Freeth who married a Mary Mann in 1793 in Wednesbury, Stafford and who did have a son called Edwin John who was christened in 1809 in St Phillips in Birmingham and who thus looks to be my guy. None the less, I am still no wiser as to who this Job Freeth might be - Harborne or St Phillips.

I think my query boils down to this: does anyone have any evidence that a Job Freeth christened in 1767 in Harborne married a Mary Mann or someone else, or if he a brassfounder or not.

Needless to say, if anyone can help with any ideas I would be exceedingly grateful. I can provide an email address if replies off the board are prefered.

Chrissie

I am a Freeth living in California. Do you have any information on Freeth's that went to Gibraltar. My Great Grandfather was born in either London or Sheffield and at some time lived in Gibraltar. His wife was Spanish
His name was William Felix and his father was Thomas.
He was born around 1820 and came to U.S.A. in 1860, sailing from Gibraltar.
Thanks Joan Freeth

Re: General Sir James Freeth

Hi David,
Glad to have tracked you - when you left a message on freethnotes.net, I forgot to ask for a return email address!

The "military Freeths", as we call them, are not related to our branch of the "London Freeths". However, Charles Freeth was an agent for Sun Fire and Life Insurance, which is probably how General Sir James Freeth came to be insured with Sun.

I have a sketch of a family tree which involves the Holt-Freeth family, although I am sure some of it is incorrect. But I can't, for the moment, locate the information showing which parts are wrong!

It shows General Sir James Freeth (1786-1867) married a Harriett (Harriot?) Holt. Their children include:
* Sampson Freeth (1815-1891), who married Harriet Jane Young
* James Holt Freeth (b 1817)
* John Walter d'Urban Freeth (1813-1883) married a Mary Ann
* Rev Frederick Harvey Freeth (1820-1889)
* Eliza Freeth (1822-1891)
* Walter d'Urban Freeth (1824-1884)
* a dau
* Richard King Freeth (1825-1875) married Jane Lydia, child William Drinkwater Freeth

It also shows that Sir James Freeth (1786-1867) is the son of General Sampson Freeth (1745-1815) and Elizabeth (1746-1820), but this is probably wrong.

These may help you to locate the right Census records. If you need any more help, leave a message on freethnotes.net (and include an email address!)

Regards and good luck!
Rob Freeth

I'm pretty certain this is the same one though there are rather a lot of Generals in this family.

from http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1856/mar/03/suppl...

The first was the case of a most distinguished officer, Major General Freeth, the late Quartermaster General, who served in that office for forty-two years. He did not suppose that gallant officer would be made a K.C.B., because he had for so long a period held such an appointment; but what were the services of General Freeth? The hon. and learned Member for Sheffield (Mr. Roebuck) had the other evening been pleased to refer to "carpet knights," but it would, he believed, be generally acknowledged that there were few officers in the British army to whom such a term could be applied, for our officers, if they were not exposed to the fire of the enemy, were exposed to the noxious influence of unhealthy and pestilent climates. Well, what were services of General Freeth? He had the war medal and eight clasps for Fuentes d'Onor, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca, Burgos, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Pampeluna, Nivelle, and Nive; and there was but one feeling of regret throughout the whole army that that distinguished soldier had been allowed to retire from an office which he had so long held with the utmost credit to himself, and with the greatest advantage to the service, without having received any mark of distinction whatever.

also:http://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/orders-decorations-med...

[ Orders \ Decorations \ Medals ] Military General Service 1793-1814, 8 clasps, Fuentes D'Onor, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive (J. Freeth, Lieut. Royal Staff Corps) fitted with silver ribbon buckle, good very fine E1800-2200 14 medals to officers of the Royal Staff Corps, including one with 9 clasps, and two with 8 clasps. James Freeth was appointed Ensign in the Royal Staff Corps on 25 December 1806; Lieutenant, 30 May 1809; Captain, 21 April 1814; Major, 21 January 1819; Lieutenant-Colonel, 11 July 1826; Colonel, 23 November 1841; Major-General, 11 November 1851; Colonel of the 65th (2nd Staffordshire) Regiment, 13 August 1855 Lieutenant-General, 26 October 1858; General, 9 March 1865. Lieutenant-General Freeth served in the Peninsula and France from May 1809 to January 1814, and was present at the following actions and sieges; Fuentes d'Onor, capture of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, battles of Salamanca, Burgos, Vittoria, and Pyrenees, near Pampeluna, Nivelle, and Nive, for which he has received the War Medal with eight clasps. He was subsequently attached for many years to the Quarter-Master General's Department at the Horse Guards, and was appointed a Knight of Hanover. General James Freeth, K.H., died in 1867.

Many thanks for your posting. Good to hear from a Freeth descendant. I would be very interested to learn more about your branch of the family and suggest you reply to: hortonpallister@hotmail.co.uk - maybe easier.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Think I may be one of the branches! from Samuel Freeth and Frances Grigg, son Thomas, married Sarah Hemmings, son Noah married Ann Robinson, son Walter married Ellen Shipley, their daughter Ellen was my grandmother - she married Alfred Bevan and had 7 children one of whom - Alan was my father. The website is great glad to be part of the family, once I have unravelled more I can fill you in

Hello Susan,

There appear to be 3 suggestions (from IGI records) regarding Edward Freeth's (b.31.5.1703) mother - Elizabeth Powell, Susannah Smart & Ann Tomson. Exactly who (&when) William married needs further investigation! If we come up with something new I'll certainly let you know.

Best wishes, John

Hi again John,

Sorry to be a pain but was just checking IGI (which I know is not always correct ) and I found your Edward Freeth b. 1703 and his siblings but it says their mother was Ann Thomson not Elizabeth Powell. Have you come across this before?
Susan
