John Freidrich (or Friedrich)

My great grandfather was from Germany. When Hitler started his killings etc., my great grandfather escaped from Germany, changed his name to Makovnic. I am not sure where else he went. My grandfather, John J. Makovnic, came to the Calhan-Ramah area, east of Colorado Springs, Colorado, around 1925-30. He married my grandmother, Mary Martha Lazor.
I would like any information I can get on my great grandfather. I am not sure of his first name, but my grandfather's first name was John and so was his son's.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Philadelphia, PA

Peter Endres and Anton Friedrich were Germans from an area of Hungary (now part of Romania), called The Banat. I don't know what their true relationship was, except on the 1905 immigration info at Ellis Island, Peter was going to Philadelphia to join his cousin, Anton Friedrich. There were other Friedrich individuals and families who came to Philadelphia at that time also, including Ignatz, Nikolaus, Jacob, Joseph, Johann, Kasper, Mathias, Regina, and Sophia. No Ernst or Christian. Of course, the Ellis Island records are not complete. There were several Johanns. This was a common first name, many would eventually go by their middle name. As far as the spelling, I have seen it Friedrich, Fridrich, Friderich, Friederich, etc, but not Freidrich. I posted here, just in case. As far as I know "ei" has an "i" sound and "ie" has an "e" sound in German. Do you know when your Ernst came to the US?

My grandmother Mary Bertha was born and raised in Philadelphia, her father was Ernst Friedrich lived and is buried in Philadelphia, PA and his father was Christian Friedrich. Ernst and Christian were from "Germay" W. Prussia, we think. Are you sure about your spelling? I have no info on Siblings of Ernst 1866-1950. Any connection? MJSW
