Flying Officer Hubert Dainton Freakes of South Africa, Pilot Royal Air Force died 10 March 1942 aged 28yrs. He died when his Hudson V8995 crashed on approach to Honeybourne airfield. Also killed was Sergeant J.E. Beartz (404325) of the Royal Australian Air Force.

I've sent Robert an e-mail to ask him for further information on Blanche Dainton in South Africa. There is a lady from the Frome Group (Yahoo) who has been collecting Frome & Somerset, but mainly Frome people who have ended up in South Africa (1800 - 1930). I believe Robert has forward quite a few names to her, including that of Dainton. I don't know if there is anyone working on the Gloucestershire families that have moved to South Africa?

A few details were missed out.

Hubert and Michael you have the details (although Michael married Maureen - but maybe that was the name she was known by. Michel and Maureen stayed with my family when they visited the Uk as did their children)

Benjamin born about1872/3.Parents:Benjamin(born about1845 Bermondsey) and Eliza(born about1848 Newington)married 1867. He was a timber merchant, lived 9 Deverell st Newington on 1881 census.

no dates for children.Presume born Durban.Nina married Yendall Stevens,1son Donald m Angela. Roland also married.
In Durban Benjamin was a director of J L Huletts.When was young in S.A. war & Zululand Rebellion (natal mounted rifles)

It looks like this to me, after looking at 1881 census (did not find them in 1871 or 1891 census) and checking the Birth, Marriage & Death index. I did not find Eliza (b.1871) or Amy (b.1880) in birth records. I corrected the dates for the others I found. Benjamin was registered in 1872.

As for Mother it seems most likely she was Eliza Stebbings as she was born in 1848 in Newington & married in Newington, while the other canidate, Eliza Wilcox was not born in Newington (compare to 1881 census)

1) Was Blanche May Dainton born in South Africa as I can only find one Blanche Dainton born (1884) in England that would fit?
2) What is the information on the marriage certificate regarding Blanche's father?
3) Michael Arnold Freakes was buried at St Thomas's Cemetery in Durban (July 1986). Was this their 'Family' church? And if so what records are available?
