Hi,

It's been a while since this post, so I am hoping it's still active. I am researching the family of Catherine Freke born in the Parish of Holy Trinity. Her parents were John Freke Shaftesbury and Ann who was from Taunton Somerset. They lived in 1841 and 1851 at 44 Angel Lane. Catherine married James Burton of Portsea.

Hello all,

I'm researching Freke/Freake families of Fogo Island. My ancestors are Benson Freake(b.1898), son of Hubert Joel Freake(b.1872) and Phoebe Ann Peyton. Hubert's parents are Samuel Freke and Mary Ann Cull (married 1869).

I'm curious where the Freke line goes from there... anyone have any info relating to the family of Samuel Freke? I'm willing to work with relatives to uncover the mysteries!

Hi Sarah, I am working on the genealogy of a young man from New Zealand whose family has passed on the Freke name - it is actually his middle name. However, its roots have been lost, as it was passed on as a given name, and we cannot yet locate the link to the ancestors with that surname. I am looking for the ancestors of a Freke Payne who married Jessie Harriet Phoebe Harvey. Freke was born around 1900 some time. I am unable, so far, to find ancestors for Freke, and it appears either he or his parents must have emigrated to New Zealand around the time of his birth. I am hoping that his mother had the Freke surname. Does any of this sound familiar in any way? You are, so far, the closest link I have found to the Freke name in New Zealand! Thanks for any input! does anyone have any family information on William Freake, he was born 1840-1858 and died while ice fishing or sealing on Apr. 7, 1917. I would like to trace back to find out who he was married to, (Emma?) and who his parents, grandparents, etc are. I am his great granddaughter. My mother's name is Emma Godwin and my grandmother's name was Minnie Freake. He is her father. Also any information on my great grandmother 'Emma' would be appreciated as well.

I was wondering if these Freakes connect to any of those you have on file. I got as far as finding out who the parents and grandparents of my great-grandmother, LOUISA SUSSANAH, were but am stuck and can't find out anything more. Maybe you can help me out. Here's what I have:

I am a grandson of James Freke and Louisa Blinman. You are right in saying that they had thirteen children, and I have a photo of them with their children. If you send me an email address I will email it to you. Only one of the children is still alive, Ron.

Cousin Charles used to come to family funerals, but I understand that he's dead now. The Blinman girls had a brother, whose son was my barber for many years. We didn't discover the link for many years, as I didn't know his surname, and he didn't know mine!

I have Freakes family tree in detail from eliza and benjamin onwards. Do you have exact DOB and death of Eliza stebbings and Benjamin Freakes? And exact date of their marriage in 1867. I have Benjamin's parents as William and Mary Groves (from the Freakes family Bible) but no details. Benjamin and Eliza were my father's (deryck henry Freakes) grandparents. My mother who is still alive remembers all Eliza's children. Am happy to fill you in if you have gaps.

It is with regret that i must tell you that mum (janice) passed away on 10th March 2006.

I am her son Thomas, i have kept up her e-mail so i can reply to these messages.

I do have all of her family history information that i would be more than happy to pass on a copy to you, although i have yet to sort it all out.

My interest in the 'Freakes' comes from a gtx5 grandmother, Hannah Freakes who married William Attfield(my mother is nee Attfield). Hannah was born in Wanborough in 1752 and baptised in Compton. Hannah's mother was an Elizabeth Harwood b 1714(in Wanborough I think) who married James Freakes in Ash in 1742 by Licence. They had at least 7 children, one of which was Hannah. Her parents(I think) were Richard Harwood (probably of Wanborough) and Elizabeth Daley of Bisley.
This is all I know about the Harwoods(have seen it spelt Harewood, Harward, etc etc) in that area and there are many Harwoods in the area on earliest census's. There was a John Harwood living in Ash in 1691

Getting desperate & hope you might be able to help. Am looking for Harwood family, Worplesdon, Normandy, Wyke,Ash?? Have been to the Normandy historians website & found it very helpful. My great grandmother was Fanny Smither, nee Harwood. Her father was John Harwood & I have a family that seems to match. But there are 2 marriages between a John & Jane & the offspring for both are confused. I have 2 Janes, Harrison whose marriage to a John Harwood is reg at St Marks 1851 & a Jane Kersley 1853. Have seen your ancestors on Normandy website & just wondered if your research might have uncovered anything more about families in the area? Cant find any birth info about Fanny. But have christenings 30 june 1861 both Worplesdon & Wyke for a Fanny Harwood, both born to a John & Jane. Appreciate any info.

As far as I know there is no Cerne in Hampshire but there is a Cerne Abbas in the next county, Dorset. From my research on the Freakes(a gtx5 grandmother of mine was Hannah Freakes of Ash Surrey, b 1752) most of them, at least in the C18th, were living in the Guildford/Ash area of Surrey, in/near Ringwood in Hampshire(near Dorset border), and in the Bristol area. The vast majority of Freakes, Frekes etc had nothing to with landowning, Baronetcies, etc. Most were small scale farmers, hop-growers and malsters. regards Roger

My ancestors are also Constantine & Jane Freke from Gloucester, England their 11th Child Silas Freke is my great- great grandfather. Silas married a Hannah Garland in Kingswood, Gloucester on 17 September 1850, they had 14 children and then their son, my grandfather, Timothy married an Ameila White in 1891and then came out to Australia in approx 1910. Blanche Freakes middle name was definitely Eliza. She died 31.6.1960 I'm pretty sure.Have worked this out through having just read letters from her husband Benjamin Freakes to my father and grandfather. Blanche was known to the family as Aunty Molly. Was a very good pianist and may have played professionally.
Have a few more dates:her daughter Nina born. 25.10.16 her
Son Roland born. 15.6.21 Roland married Mollie. All Blanches children now dead but many grandchildren.

1) Was Blanche May Dainton born in South Africa as I can only find one Blanche Dainton born (1884) in England that would fit?
2) What is the information on the marriage certificate regarding Blanche's father?
3) Michael Arnold Freakes was buried at St Thomas's Cemetery in Durban (July 1986). Was this their 'Family' church? And if so what records are available?

It looks like this to me, after looking at 1881 census (did not find them in 1871 or 1891 census) and checking the Birth, Marriage & Death index. I did not find Eliza (b.1871) or Amy (b.1880) in birth records. I corrected the dates for the others I found. Benjamin was registered in 1872.

As for Mother it seems most likely she was Eliza Stebbings as she was born in 1848 in Newington & married in Newington, while the other canidate, Eliza Wilcox was not born in Newington (compare to 1881 census)

Yes I'm interested in exploring further along the Feakes line, both back along Benjamin's line as well as forward, if it's not too much trouble.

I 'm interested in the marriage of Benjamin & Blanche as well as any other dates of the children (Nina & Ronald) & where they were born.

A few details were missed out.

Blanche and Benjamin had 4 children....

Hubert and Michael you have the details (although Michael married Maureen - but maybe that was the name she was known by. Michel and Maureen stayed with my family when they visited the Uk as did their children)

the other 2 children were.. Nina married to Yendall Stevens and had a son, Donald.

and ..Roland also married to ?

Laura Dorothy Freke, 85, Shell Knob, died Wednesday, November 3, at St. John's Hospital in Cassville.
She was born June 7, 1919, at Aurora, Illinois, the daughter of John and Josephine Strantz Parcell. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Shell Knob.
She married Vernon Dale Freke on February 4, 1940, at Aurora, Illinois. He preceded her in death on March 11, 1982.
She is survived by a son, Steve Freke, Shell Knob and one sister, Ella Flynn, Tucson, Arizona.
A daughter, Sandra Lee Dahn, in 1988, one sister and one brother preceded her in death.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 6, 2004, at Trinity Presbyterian Church with Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating, under the direction of Williams Funeral Home, Shell Knob. Burial will be at Rivers Hill Memorial Park, Batavia, Illinois at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shell Knob Alliance of Churches in care of the funeral home.

Have just spotted your entry re:Freakes..I too have been researching the Freakes family in the Ash/Worplesdon/Wanborough areas..

On June 2 1832 Naomi Freakes married George Terry in Holy Trinity, Guildford..they then lived Flexford and Perry Hill, Worplesdon. They are direct ancesors of my husband. The "jury" is still out as to which Thomas was Naomi's father..he may be Thomas the illegitimate son of Mary "your" Hannah's sister.

I've sent Robert an e-mail to ask him for further information on Blanche Dainton in South Africa. There is a lady from the Frome Group (Yahoo) who has been collecting Frome & Somerset, but mainly Frome people who have ended up in South Africa (1800 - 1930). I believe Robert has forward quite a few names to her, including that of Dainton. I don't know if there is anyone working on the Gloucestershire families that have moved to South Africa?

This information might have come from a novel called White Mischief. Castle Freke, which lies West of Cork between Clonakilty and Skibbereen, is standing, not a crumbling ruin.
The lands that were part of the Carberry Baronetcy are part of

was Ralphe Freke, who was accountant and treasurer to Henry VIII. I believe Elizabeth I ceded the Carberry Baronetcy to the Frekes. The line has other branches, and it is a bit more complicated than Evans married in. There are Frekes, Evans-Frekes, and Hussey-Frekes. Doing the research, I looked through decades worth of Burke's Peerage and later DeBrett's - and if you do you will see that there is a long gap
(many decades worth) before you come to the present day
title holders 11th Baron Carberry. Burke's and DeBrett's
are both commercial, and the families pay to list. There is also a national register published by the government which shows from the 6th Baron the line transfered over 3 times I believe as the then title holders died without issue. These were also Frekes, as the family was then spread through England and Ireland.

Freke - Blinman

I am looking for descendants of George and Hannah Elizabeth Freke, she was nee Blinman. Said to have had two sons William and Charles. Hannah was born 1888.

I have an extensive family tree of the Freakes of Worplesdon, Ash and Normandy, and Wanborough, Surrey from about 1695 to 1800 and after. A Hannah Freakes married my 5xgt grandfather and my mothers side, William Attfield, in Ash Surrey in 1774. They were yeomen and Farmers in the main.

Yes I do have Gordon and Ivy Freake in my tree. Gordon is the son of Obediah Freake and Elizabeth Freake and Ivy is the daughter of Stanley Waterman and Minnie Oake. How are you related to this particular leg of my family tree?
