Oh wow - thanks so much for posting!! I had just been looking up Friar/Frier/Fryer, which is why I was struggling so much. I had heard a possible rumor in the family about the name originally being Friarson, but I was under the impression that, if it had changed from Friarson to Friar, that had been further back in time, not as early as 1900 or so. Also, it was just a rumor. My husband is the youngest in his group of siblings, so he doesn't know much about the family history at all, so I am going to search the census better looking for Friarson also. I knew the family had been in this area for a while, which is what made it so frustrating. I mainly knew they were from Timmonsville in the recent years, so now I am understanding a little bit more, as I had found out some of the family members were buried in Effingham. Some Carmons who married Friars live currently in Effingham, so this is really helping me out.

Thank you so much for your insight & study into this. I also didn't know Sol Friar/Friarson was married more than once, but since I was stumped on the name change, etc., I just wasn't sure where to turn.

I do not think we are from the same Friars, Fryers at this time but I took an interest in your post. Have you done any census research on this family? I found them in 1900 listed as Fryer and in 1910 listed as Friarson in Effingham Township, Florence County. It appears from these records that Solomon had a first wife prior to Bettie Odom. Also, was wondering if the name was Friarson at one time and was shortened to Friar or if this was just a mistake by the enumerator. The names of the members of the family appear to match and Edward is listed in the 1910 record. Regards, Mary Ann (Fryer) Westfall

My husband's mother was Ruth Friar - from Timmonsville SC. Her parents were Edward Lee Friar (1900-1939) & Betty Juanita (Nita) Lloyd (1906-1957) from SC. Ed's parents were Saul/Sol Friar & Betty Odom. I have not been able to go back any further than that so far. I have an obituary about Thelma Friar, sister of Ruth Friar, but it didn't give any earlier information. Both Thelma & Ruth Friar married into the Carmon family in the Florence Cty., SC area.

I am trying to find out as much as I can about this family, but am running into roadblocks for sure.

Simeon Peter Friars - From Duchess N.Y. to Kings, New Brunswick, Canada

My local library helped again by letting me know that the first Friars he found in N.B. was Simeon Peter Friars b. 1745 Duchess, N.Y., d. 1818 Sussex, Kings, N.B. By following this line I have been able to connect, but it has been difficult sorting out all of the Simeon (Simon) Peters! It appears that not only would sons named Simon P. would name thier sons Simon P. - but that brothers of Simon P. would also name thier sons Simon P. Still trying to sort through all of that....
The father of Simeon Peter Friars (from Duchess N.Y.) was also named Simeon Peter Friars, but no history.....
Hoping maybe someone has some info to connect further back.
Margaret Ann Friars was b. 15 Sep 1846 in Wards Creek, Kings,N.B. to John Friars, b.1807,d. 22 Jul 1869 & Rachel Walker, b.1811,d.11 Oct.1900.

She married Michael Farren, b. 1840, Kings, N.B. d. 1903 Aroostook County, ME. m. Jan.6,1868 in Kings,N.B.
The 1881 census of Canada gives them at Sussex, Kings,N.B.

Margaret Ann Friars moved to Aroostook County, Maine with her husband Michael Farren sometime between 1889-1900 I think, as the last documented child of thiers (that I've been able to find in N.B.), my ggrandmother, Albina Elizabeth Farren, b. 4-Jun-1889 in Lake George, York, New Brunswick.

The 1900 census gives Michael & Margaret as living in New Limerick, six miles west of Houlton.

John Friars (Margaret Ann's father) b. 1807, Wardscreek, d. 22-Jul-1869 Wardscreek, N.B, m. 26-Nov-1829 Rachel Walker and had 17 children in all.)

Simon P. Friars (John's father) b. 1770 b. Wardscreek, Sussex, Kings, N.B. married Sarah Burgess b. 1772 with his family of 9 children. It appears as though quite a few of them remained in Wardscreek.

Thought this might be helpful to someone....
Is there anyone who can add to this?

Thanks.
I don't have much information at all on them, so I am trying to do some investigation on the family tree but don't have much to go on. My mother-in-law's sisters were Thelma Friar Carmon (the sisters married cousins) & one still living - Joyce Friar Carraway. There were some brothers also - Gordon Friar & Everett.
Mary or Matilda Friar

My ggrandfather, Phillip Jake Engler, was born in Winnamore (I think) Iowa March 29 1881 and died in Red Lodge MT Nov. 9, 1946. His death certificate says his father was Jake Engler and his mother was Mary Friar although other family members say her name was Matilda. Any info on her or him would be appreciated.
