Hi Judy, I am using a MacBook and all of my genealogical records are on PAF5.2, so I have to shut down and reboot my computer as a Windows machine in order to look at PAF. I saw that you are one of eight children and that you came into the world in October 1954, so obviously I didn't see you in Jamaica in the summer of 1954. Perhaps I did when we visited Canada a year or two later. I am 12 years older than you. Best, Ben

As I said in my invite, my e-mail is bbailey98@etcmail.com. It was fun to see Judy Corday's name in the thread of e-mails as I have been corresponding with her for several years now. Best, Ben

Judy, we may have met either in 1954 in Jamaica or later in Canada. My sister Libby and our mom visited Jamaica. A couple of years later, I think, we visited Canada with my dad along, too. Your grandfather Donald Herbert Allan Darrell was one of my mother Frances' several older brothers. My wife and I finally made it to Grand Turk in December 2009 while on a cruise with Holland America and took my mom's ashes there. I placed them where her twin brother Benjamin Louis Darrell is interred. My wife, sister, and I tried to visit Grand Turk this past March, but the weather conditions kept the ship from docking. So Libby has seen Grand Turk, but not landed there yet. We will try again next March. We have sent $$ to Rosemary Simons, a taxi driver who remembers the Frith's and Darrell's, to have mom's ashes actually placed inside the crypt with Benjamin Louis. Rosemary took us around n December 2009 and was going to do it this past March, too :(

Hi Ben - you are the 3rd distant cousin I have heard from in the past few months. You can try going to your family tree - beside the tree name youll see "tree pages" , click on it and you'll see "share tree", click there and then click on email - left corner. You can email it to me at judy_lawrie@hotmail. Hopefully I'll be able to see it there. I can email mine to you also - if needed - so give me your email address. I also can send you some pictures that I have received, and we can share more info
Looking forward to hearing from you Judy

Hi Judy, It is under bailey/pucker which Ancestry must have gotten from new.familysearch.org as I do not remember providing it myself to them. It shows that it is private, so please let me know what I can do to release it to you. I see many listings for your Lawrie tree when I searched for the Darrells, so I will enjoy looking at yours. Thanks, Ben

The information I have came from family and they were very reluctent to talk about ancestors. I have found a John Henry Frith that was born 1851 in Missouri. He married Nancy Elizabeth Fletcher. They moved to Texas. This could be Mary's brother. Nancy was a cousin of my gggrandfather, Andrew Jackson Fletcher. Nancy's mother Margaret Mhoon daughter of Stark Mhoon who was Cherokee. Henry Frith from Virginia 2nd wife was Narcissus. He had a son Franklin Francis Frith who could be John and Mary's father. Henry also had a son William Giles the whole family moved to Arkansas. William also had a daughter named Narcissus. I believe these people are all connected. Good luck on your search and if you find out any more let me know thanks, Daryl

Daryl
Thanks for the reply. are you sure that your Narcissus was born in Missouri? The one I have was born about 1855 in Claiborne County Tennessee to Henry Frith & her mother was Charlotte ?. I'm trying to get information on Will (William)Frith who was my GreatGrandfather. They moved to Middlesborough Kentucky in the 1900's. They had a son named Hugh W. Frith. I trying to find out if the "W" stood for William? It is a coincidence that you have a Narcissus also.

Hi! Read your inquire about the Friths. My gggrandmother was Mary Narcissus Frith born 1848 in grundy Co. Missouri. She married Andrew Jackson Fletcher in Arkansas in 1869 and they moved to Texas and then to Idaho where they both died. One of their sons was Ernest Lee Fletcher and I wonder if their is any connection between your family and this family? Mary Narcissus was 1/2 cherokee. If you have any info please let me know.
Hi I have a Jesse Frith and Mary Beal parents of John Frith in 1818 Sheffield. John (Saw Handle Maker)married Rosanna Foster in 1840 and had John (1841), Rosanna (1842), Samuel (1845), Joseph (1848) and Mary Jane (1851). I am interested in any knowledge you may have on any of these people - especially interested in the mysterious Mary Jane who married a Frederick Chambers then changed her name back to Frith but has a Rosannah Foster Frith in 1884 who later marries Joseph HOrace Akers. My line is Samuel who came out to New Zealand. Cheers. Esther

Frith DNA project -20% off sale through Dec 31st

If you know of anyone who might be interested in the Thrift /Frith /Firth DNA project, the testing company, FTDNA, is having a 20%+ off sale through the end of December, 2011. There's a link to prices at the Thrift /Frith /Firth Surname DNA Project's site map page,
http://bit.ly/TFFDNA (but actual prices should not be discussed on these boards).

Testing 67 markers is preferred, testing 37 markers is still helpful. See also the Background page linked at the project's site map page.

To see how powerful the technique is, see the chart here:
http://bit.ly/TFFDNA-fam_grp
-a Thrift family in Yately, Hampshire, England is an almost identical match to descendants of Nathaniel Frith of northern Virginia born before 1650. DNA proved the relationship, even though the most recent common ancestor of the two families was over 350 years ago -and though there is absolutely no written documentation of the trans-Atlantic relationship.

Circumstantial evidence from DNA testing (see http://bit.ly/TFFDNA-fam_grp for details) suggests that Friths of Bedford Co, Virginia and of Garrard /Madison /Rockcastle /Lincoln Co., Kentucky are closely related to Friths of South Carolina. We need Friths from Virginia to be tested. Not only that, we need Friths of several different Virginia lineages tested, so we can know whether there are several different southern Virginia Frith families, or just one very old family with many branches.

(Ancestry.com also tests DNA, but they do not offer enough markers to really be informative, and cannot upgrade to testing more markers when needed, so FTDNA is MUCH preferred. Ancestry's "43 marker test" is equivalent to FTDNA's 37 marker test. Both are useful, but take a look at the "family grouping" pages (linked at the site map) to see how much more helpful 67 markers can be.)

Getting information by DNA testing is really a team effort: the more people who test, the more information provided by the results. You never know what you'll find until you do it. And so far, we have very few Friths tested, either in the UK or the colonies. There is a BIG hole in our knowledge.

Please feel free to ask me any questions about any of this.

Richard Thrift
rtx at cox dot net
My grandfather was Donald H A Darrell and these were his parents. My mom is 85 and has fond memories of her Gr "grandpa B C" as he was called. I have located his parents Daniel Frith and Jane Butterfield (1st wife), but cannot locate any further info on Daniel or Jane. If you have any information I'd love to hear it.

In April I'm heading to Provo and have booked a day trip to Grand Turk. It includes a visit to the museum where there is a lot of info on the salt rakers. I'm hoping to be able to get some info on some missing relatives there - Can hardly wait!!!

Theodore "Jake" Frith b: 1857 in NY d: 14 Apr 1893

taken from www.iowacoldcases.org

Double Homicide
Henry Talcott, 39
Theodore “Jake” Frith, 36

Dubuque Rail Yards
Dubuque, IA
Dubuque County
April 14, 1893
By Nancy Bowers

The Murders

Early on the morning of Friday, April 14, 1893, Milwaukee Road policemen Henry Talcott, 39, and Theodore “Jake” Frith, 36, were searching the Dubuque rail yards at 19th Street for men who had robbed train passengers.
emblem for Milwaukee RR
About 2:15 a.m., they discovered three men, later described as “tramps,” sleeping inside a coach and tried to arrest them.

There was a terrible struggle. Shots were heard by passengers in other cars, followed by the sound of a window breaking. Witnesses saw three men fleeing the coach.

The engineer of the switch engine stopped and stepped down just in time to catch Jake Frith as he fell dead — shot in the neck and back.

Talcott, wounded above the left eye, was found barely alive on the platform. He communicated through sign language that he and Frith were shot by three men.

Inside the blood-splattered passenger coach was broken glass, .38 caliber bullets that were “battered” on their tips, and a blue steel .38 caliber revolver covered with blood.

A hotel clerk came forward claiming that two nights before he confiscated a similar gun from a guest named Leonard Haley, removed “battered bullets” from it, and gave it back the next morning. The clerk identified the weapon found in the train car as the one he took from Haley.

The search was on for the shooters.
The Suspects

A few days later, 24-year-old Leonard W. “Leon” Haley and Hugh Robbard, 42, were arrested on a rural road in Delaware County. When they were detained and told they matched descriptions of the Railroad Police shooters, Leonard Haley anxiously inquired if both officers were dead, seeming to implicate himself.

The men were held at Greeley before being brought back to Dubuque, where they were identified by witnesses as two of the men seen fleeing the shootings.

Haley and Robbard gave conflicting stories concerning their whereabouts at the time of the murders.

Robbard, Haley, and a third man — James “The Omaha Kid” Kent — were indicted for the murders of Henry Talcott and Jake Frith as well as for the robberies of David McDonald on Washington Street in Dubuque; of Ed H. Jones, a boy who worked for the Illinois Central Railroad; and of an aged Mrs. Everett in her home a few nights before the murders.

An angry crowd gathered at the jail and the Sheriff placed guards around the building, letting no one into the yard.

Robbard, who was born in 1851 in Missouri, had most recently lived in Chicago.

Little was known about the man who called himself Leonard W. Haley, including his real name. He was believed to be born in 1869 in Indiana and was said to have “high connections” in Chicago.

He also had a mysterious appearance: one eye was completely black and without expression.

Six railroad detectives hunted James Kent for weeks without locating him. Kent’s brother claimed he was in Omaha and wanted to turn State’s witness in exchange for immunity. However, when Kent failed to materialize, rumors surfaced that he escaped the United States on a boat to Australia.
Courtroom Drama

Haley’s lawyer argued unsuccessfully for a change of venue, claiming a conspiracy among Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad workers to lynch Robbard and Haley should they escape conviction.

Robbard’s sister, a Mrs. Mullett from Chicago, came with her small boy to visit him in jail before the arraignment. Already tearful, Mrs. Mullett became agitated in the courtroom and was being helped to an anteroom when she collapsed into the Sheriff’s arms in a dead faint just as she passed the Judge’s bench.

Haley and Frith were tried separately.

Robbard was convicted of the Talcott and Frith murders in December 1893 and Haley in February 1894; both were sentenced to life in prison.
Jailhouse Groupies

During Haley’s trial, Robbard was brought into court to testify. As he was escorted through the corridor in shackles, 34-year-old May Fanning, a widow employed in the Sheriff’s Office, rushed towards him and kissed him, giving him a bank note, a basket of fruit, and a note to “My Dear Hugh” from “Your Loving May” that said she was a friend who would never forsake him.

Haley, too, had many fans, as described by the Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette:

“This murderer has also captured the hearts of several foolish girls, and today appeared in court dressed to kill. The audience, which every day fills the court to suffocation, is made up largely of romantic maidens, but yesterday’s incident [with May Fanning] has determined the high school principal to withdraw his class in civil government from the galleries.”

Life in Prison?

Both men began serving their sentences at Anamosa but were later transferred to Fort Madison.

Throughout the years, Haley and Robbard unwaveringly protested their innocence. Many thought the evidence used to convict them was only circumstantial.

Haley continued to appeal his conviction, without results. In 1896, he was described by the Dubuque Daily Herald as “a [prison] machinist and in good health.”

In 1900, Dubuque County Sheriff James L. Conlin visited all the men held at Anamosa who were from Dubuque. Conlin reported to local newspapers that Haley was the foreman of the prison printing office and that Robbard was “broken in health and unable to do manual labor” and believed he would never be free again.

In December 1906, a Robert S. Rose of Chicago announced that if Haley could be released, he had a job for him at a school for shorthand, a skill the convict learned in prison.
A Gubernatorial Pardon

In an act of Executive Clemency just before he left office in January 1925, Iowa Governor Nathan E. Kendall pardoned both Haley and Robbard after 31 years of imprisonment.

Robbard, who was then 73 and described by the Waterloo Evening Courier as “friendless, feeble and broken in spirit,” chose to stay in prison because he had nowhere else to go.

However, Leon Haley — then 55 — told newspapers he was moving to Texas to take up the profession of writing.
The Lives of the Victims

Henry Talcott was born in Iowa in 1854. Little is known about him other than in 1892 he lived at 260 Garfield Avenue in Dubuque.

Theodore “Jake” Frith was born in New York in 1857 to English immigrants Amelia Bawden and Thomas Edwin Frith. He had eight siblings: Thomas E., Jr., Cornelia, Sarah, William B., Amelia S., Nelson Franklin, Eugene Elson, and Martha Frith.

In his younger years, Jake Frith worked as an ale bottler. About 1880, he married Lillian “Lilly” Janeth and they made their home in Dubuque. He was survived by his wife and four young children — Lilly, Harry, Myrtle, and Catherine “Katy” Frith.
Information Needed

Questions and information about the unsolved 1894 murders of Railroad Policemen Henry Talcott and Theodore “Jake” Frith should be directed to the Dubuque Police Department at 563-589-4410 or to Iowa Cold Cases through the Contact form.
Sources

“Aged Pardoned Convict To Stay In Prison,” Sioux County Index, January 23, 1925.
“Caught On the Fly,” Dubuque Daily Herald, September 18, 1896.
“The City in Brief,” Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette, September 14, 1893.
“Dubuque’s Colony At Anamosa,” Dubuque Daily Herald, May 2, 1900.
“Gov.
My mom was a Darrell. They are related to the Friths of Turks. Mr Darrell was one of the Bermudian's who went to Turks to start the salt industry. Mom went to Jamaica about 1938 to 40, married a Newman and they moved to Canada in may 1955, In 1980 my grandfather Donald Herbert Darrell was trying to get the salt industry restarted to get some more employment opportunities into Grand Turk. I'm finally going to get to see the islands April 2012. Will spend 1 day on Grand Turks and looking forward to seeing the museum and what info I can find about the immigrants from Bermuda

Re: Thomas Didymus Frith

Doug Green just sent me a scan of the death register entry for Thomas Frith of VA (1778-1861, husband of Martha Elizabeth Scarborough). It does indeed list his father as Thomas Frith.

(And the name Didymus does not appear. In fact neither Doug nor I have ever seen official documents showing Didymus as this Thomas Frith's middle name. I can't speak for Doug, but I have not even seen a middle initial listed officially. Has anyone?)

I suspect (based on his children's names, Avis Serena & Robert Rudd Frith) we can eventually connect him to John Frith b. 1710 who married Rebecca Rudd, daughter of John Rudd & Avis Whittaker. I suspect this Thomas Frith who was born 1778 is son (or, less likely, grandson) of Thomas Frith born ~1732 in Chesterfield Co VA, son of John Frith and Rebbecca Rudd. Is there any evidence to support this?

Richard Thrift

They had 7 children and two of those 7 are listed here being Choice Frith and Ben Rogle Frith Jr. Ben Rogel Frith Jr was my father.
Supporting the DNA connection mentioned above, in the 1850 & 1880 Abbeville, SC censuses, Jacob Frith, who is apparently Susannah Frith's son (born ~1792-1795), stated that he was born in Virginia. (Though in the 1860 census, SC was given as his birthplace.)

I don't see Susannah Frith's other children in any censuses mentioning SC. IF Jacob was born in VA, then it's likely that other children of Susannah's remained in VA after she moved to SC. It seems very possible that Harbert Frith born about 1778, of Bedford Co, VA, is her son Haverd named in her will. The 1800 Tax List, Bedford County, VA (see http://genforum.genealogy.com/frith/messages/357.html )mentions several names that we also see listed in Susannah Frith's will:
Joseph FRITH
Harbert
Thomas
William
Joseph
Thomas
(This list seems to include both Thomas D. (Didymus?) Frith of VA, b. 1778, and his father Thomas Frith b. before 1758.)

In my previous post I mentioned Herbert Frith who married in Bedford Co in 1816. Herbert married Patty Meador; Joel Meador was surety. I now think this Herbert Frith was identical to Harbert Frith whose wife was Patsy (Patty?) & whose daughter Jane was born 1817.

It would be nice to check the original documents to see if they were always transcribed correctly. Harbert may not have been recognized, so transcribed as Herbert?

Harbert Frith lived on the Stanton /Staunton /Roanoke River in Franklin /Bedford Co (actually the county names have changed many times over the years). This river is named in property descriptions of other Friths (though the river is long, and at this point I don't know how close these locations are to each other):
---------------------
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cobb/amb/d...
It will be recalled that in 1718, Joseph and Ann Frith were witnesses to the Will of Robert [Cobb]'s father, in York County. In April 1740, he (Robert, Jr.) was named the Executor of the Last Will and Testament of Ann Frith, of Dale Parish in Henrico County. In this Will, he was specifically identified as the son-in-law of Ann Frith. It is noted from the Will that he also received the most substantial part of Ann's estate, despite the fact that a son John F. Frith was also named. ... [Hmm, does he really have a middle initial, F, in this will?]
On July 25, 1749, Robert purchased 395 acres of land on the Staunton River, in Lunenburg County, Virginia, from a Robert Williams. This land was bequeathed to Robert's son, Samuel. In 1756, Robert bought 400 more acres in Lunenburg County, on the branches of Hunting Creek and Hunt's Branch. This 400 acres Robert sold to his son, Ambrose, in July 1761. By then, due to political reorganizations, this land was located in Halifax County, Virginia.

http://genforum.genealogy.com/mason/messages/5034.html
[Gilbert MASON ~1740-1781 father of Rhoda Mason (wife of William Frith who later died in Trigg Co, KY) owned land on Little Otter River and 100 acres on Staunton River, Bedford Co. If so, based on the fact that Crosia Frith Cobbs settled on the Staunton River and Hunting Creek in Lunenburg /Halifax Co, it is possible that the Franklin /Bedford Friths descend from Crosia's brother John Frith. (Rebecca Frith Eddins, sister of Crosia & John, also settled in Lunenburg Co.) But I don't know of any documentation for John Frith where it is clear that the person referred to is the son of Joseph & Anne, & brother of Crosia, after 1754 (when he witnessed a deed of a neighbor on Second Branch, Chesterfield Co).

I would appreciate any help identifying property locations, neighbors, etc of these Friths, or any other data you have found that may help make connections.

Richard Thrift

Friths of KY, VA, SC, MS & LA (USA); Harbard, Harbert, Haverd (& maybe even Herbert) Frith

The Thrift /Frith /Firth Surname DNA Project
http://bit.ly/TFFDNA
now has indirect evidence suggesting that Friths of Garrard /Madison /Rockcastle /Lincoln Co, Kentucky and Franklin /Bedford Co, Virginia may be very closely related to Friths of South Carolina (some of whom moved to Alabama and Georgia).
See http://bit.ly/TFFDNA-fam_grp
To confirm this we need Friths from Kentucky and Virginia to be tested.

The following are hints further suggesting that the above family group may also be related to Friths of Amite Co, Mississippi, and Avoyelles, Winn, & Grant Parishes, Louisiana:
There is an unusual but recurrent given name among various lines of Friths in the USA. Haverd Frith (born before 1795) was named in the 1812 will of Susannah Frith of Abbeville, SC. The tentative DNA connection between the SC Friths and the KY /Bedford Co, VA Friths raises the question of whether these South Carolina and Kentucky Friths were related to Harbert Frith of Bedford Co, VA (born ~1778), to Harbard Frith Sr. (born 1815-1820 in VA) who settled in Winn & Grant Parish, LA, or to John Edward Frith (born in VA ~1772). John Edward Frith's descendants (including Harbert C. Frith and Christopher Harbert Bates) settled in Amite Co, MS, Avoyelles parish, LA, and elsewhere. There are also Herbert Frith and (possibly the same) Herbert Frith appearing in Bedford Co, VA marriages in 1810 and 1816, respectively.
(See http://bit.ly/TFFDNA-fam_grp for links to the family trees of the Friths named here.)

Again, to confirm this hint of a connection we need Friths from these lineages to be tested. Please consider participating!

..and Friths from Bermuda, the Bahamas /Monroe Co, FL, and from the UK are also needed in the project!

Richard Thrift
rtx at cox dot net

Re: Thomas Didymus Frith

Kim, welcome back!
Thanks, but dgreeen was not asking about the Biblical reference (which is fairly common knowledge -it is less well known that the name is from the Greek). "Does anyone have source document showing middle name of "Didymus" - all documents I've seen simply say "Thomas Frith.""

It's a fair question, and to some people an important one.

Thomas Frith of VA (husband of Martha Elizabeth Scarborough) is listed in the 1850 & 1860 censuses simply as Thomas Frith. I would bet that there is documentation for the middle name of his son, Thomas D. Frith, husband of Caroline Cook Wingfield, but not being expert on this line I can only say I haven't seen it documented. If it can be, that is certainly a clue. But Thomas Frith, Jr. could conceivably have been called "Jr." even if he did not share his father's middle name.

Likewise, concerning the Thomas D. Frith of GA (I know of 4 wives, but I've heard that there were more), all the documents I've seen list him as Thomas D. Frith; they do not spell out his middle name. He too has a son TD Frith, but I have not seen his middle name documented either.

For BOTH Thomas D. Frith Sr's, what documents show that their middle name was Didymus, or some spelling variation?

Kim, Marty Frith praised your research; it sounds like you have done a lot of work on this. I would sure love to see documentation on Thomas' ancestors. Some say his father was Thomas, "On Thomas death register it listed Thomas Frith as his father, but I had had very little luck in finding anything on his father Thomas Frith;"
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.frith/7.14/mb.ashx
others say his father was Joseph
http://scottzajac.tripod.com/scarborough.txt
I haven't seen either statement confirmed. Do you have a transcription from his death register? Do you think the father was reported accurately as Thomas? (when records were scarce and illiteracy was more common, sometimes family members just kinda guessed.) WHICH Thomas was he son of?

CAN it be shown that these Friths descend from John Frith & Rebecca Rudd? ..who happen to have sons Thomas & Joseph, both documented
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

The Thomas D Frith of GA stated in both 1850 and 1860 that he was born in Virginia. Can it be shown that he is related to any specific Friths of VA? [Well, yes, of course, by comparing DNA
http://bit.ly/TFFDNA-fam_grp , if we can find willing participants, but until we find volunteers is there written documentation anywhere?]

Kim, your ancestry.com settings don't allow me to contact you directly. You can write me at rtx at cox dot net

thanks
Richard Thrift
The Frith Surname DNA Project

The Thrift /Frith /Firth Surname DNA project is intended for any male with any of the surnames listed among those possibly derived from Old English "fyrhpe" (frith, woodland) (where the character "p" stands for the runic Anglo-Saxon character "thorn"). The goal of Y-chromosome DNA testing is to prove whether or not two families are related, based on specific markers in the DNA of the Y chromosome. This can be in lieu of a "paper trail," where no historical records exist (although there may be family legends); it can also be done to confirm the validity of the documented paper trail. (Errors in records, AND in their interpretation, do occur.) With Y-chromosome testing, any male Frith will show a reasonably close match to every other male Frith patrilineally descended from the same line, even if the ancestor in common lived up to a thousand years ago. Beyond just finding whether two families are related, DNA testing can sometimes be used to show which branches are closer to each other and which are more distant, allowing a group of families to be arranged into a larger tree covering many generations, showing which families probably branched off soon after the earliest common ancestor, and which families branched off more recently.

For example: any patrilineal descendant of Joseph Frith (great-great-grandfather of William Powell Frith) born circa 1695 in Farnsfield, Nottinghamshire --including descendants surnamed Alford-- should match closely with any other descendant. And all of these should match any Yorkshire Frith who is related but unaware of the fact, and probably can't show a connection on paper. I hope some day to match a descendant of Hezekiah Frith, privateer of Bermuda, with a Frith who can trace his family back to somewhere in England in the same era. I would love to be able to show a Frith of London or Kent of unknown origin that his line appears to have originated with the Friths of Sheffield, etc. Yorkshire is the region most densely populated by Friths. Frith is a place name and was probably taken by many unrelated patriarchs --how many unrelated lines of Friths ARE there in Yorkshire, anyway? Closer to five, or closer to fifty?

(Females should not feel excluded from Y-chromosome DNA testing, if they have a brother, father, grandfather, uncle, or cousin available to test. It does take a bit more effort for females to find a male willing to test, but it can be well worth the effort, as demonstrated by the two females who have recently sponsored a male's test in the Frith DNA Project. Similarly, males are not limited to testing their own surname, if they can find a cousin in their wife's, mother's or grandmother's line who is willing to take a test.)

This DNA test is extremely limited, in the sense that it DOES NOT report on any genes at all. The Y chromosome DNA markers used for these studies provide NO information about genetically transmitted health issues, etc. Each participant's privacy is important. Participants are not identified on project sites by name, but by ID number. Only the most distant known ancestors are shown.

The testing company, FTDNA, encourages Surname Projects to be run by knowledgeable volunteer administrators, for the benefit of all people with the same surname, including variants. The project administrators help people understand their test results, and how those results fit in with current knowledge of the often very sketchy family trees. Based on the test results, in some cases the administrator can offer advice for further tests or genealogical research. I have set up a DNA project for the Frith surname and several variants, with different types of information available at each of the following sites:

The site map, with links to an introduction to DNA testing and the Frith DNA Project, links to current Project results, family trees, etc is at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
or http://tinyurl.com/3vjhms

The One-Name Study profile page is
http://www.one-name.org/profiles/thrift.html

For an interesting map of the Frith surname distribution in the UK as of ~1800 (that is, before the Industrial Revolution, with its attendant migration), see
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
or http://tinyurl.com/Frith-distrib

For those with Ancestry.com accounts, see
http://groups.ancestry.com/group/Thrift_Frith_Firth

The goals for this project include:
*Assist in interpreting DNA test results.
*Unequivocally determine which families can be traced to a common ancestor.
*Confirm the validity of existing paper trails that show common ancestry.
*Discover information that might resolve known issues or brick walls.
*Determine for each surname how many unique lines exist, and gather clues as to where each line originated.
*Encourage related families to
1) share resources related to tracing ancestors,
2) establish as common knowledge what has already been reliably researched, and then
3) focus attention on remaining critical areas.

Specific projects will be pursued according to the interests of project members.

I would be very glad to discuss any of this offline

Richard Thrift
Thrift /Frith /Firth Surname DNA Project administrator,
(rtx at cox dot net -please include "DNA Project" in the subject line)
