Can anyone help with any information on my great grandfather born 1892 in Surrey. According to the 1911 Census he was enlisted in the Lancashire Fusiliers in Bury. He married twice and died in Longsight in Manchester in 1943. I can find no record of his birth and am completely stumped!

The name Frith is/was at least common in Bermuda. I am named after Sanders Frith, born c.1756 in Bermuda. His mother's father was John Sanders from Virginia, but I know little definite about their origins. My grandfather was Alexander Hutchings Frith, bn 1872; his father was Alexander John Frith, bn 1829; his father was Archibald Frith, brother of Dr John Frith, bn c 1795; and Sanders had five children; Archibald; John; Edward Sanders; Richard ( possibly part "coloured"), and one whose name escapes me at this posting. I think that Sanders father and grandfather were both Lazerus Frith, but I have not separated others with the name Frith from the 1700's.and there are a number of other families. I may becontacted on my wife's email
My great grandmother was a Hutchings; her mother/grandmother was an Albuoy; her grandfather was a Washington, from Nevis .he arived here in 1795.

It is amazing that these Friths from Virginia haven't been connected yet. Or have they, and the info just isn't out on the web yet?

It is absolutely unquestionable that Thomas Didimus Frith born 1778 in Virginia
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
is related to John Frith (b. ~1710) and Rebecca Rudd,
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
based on the names Avis, Rudd, etc that run in the family. If TDF's father is Thomas, as Cindy said, then he may be Thomas son of John & Rebecca Frith.

The Thomas Didimus Frith who moved to Georgia might be son of one of John & Rebecca's other sons, Joseph or John.

I wonder if John (who married Rebecca) is son of Joseph & Ann, and brother of Crosia Frith.
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
If we can't document how these people are related, let's use DNA. Are there any descendants who might be interested in this?

Richard Thrift

note there is a related thread here
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.frith/7.14.17/mb.ashx
Hi Richard
The father of John Frith b. about April 1819 (who married Elizabeth Payne) is said to be Harbert Frith b. Abt 1778 d. 25 Dec 1843 Bedford, VA.

There is a note "According to John Admire Turner, his grandson, Harbert lived on Goose Creek, in Bedford County, Virginia, between Goose Creek and Stony Fork.
Birth and death dates are believed to be taken from the Old Turner Bible. The last person to have possession of the Bible was Mrs. Charles L. Holton, nee Lucy Turner.
I have received information that suggests that I am not descended from Nathaniel Frith--that my ancestor Roger Williams (c1638-bef1677) was married to a Joan Dudley, not a Joan Frith. I am looking proof one way or the other.

Thanks for your reply. It was interesting looking at the links you provided.

Sara
Nathaniel Frith & Elizabeth Parsons, 1600's, Virginia colony

Hi
Your post above asks about origins of Nathaniel Frith (c1620-1677) who married Elizabeth Parsons.

I may or may not be a descendant of that Nathaniel Frith. Seriously, many Friths in the US hope to trace back to him, and further to Richard Frith of Jamestown in 1607 & 1609, who some *claim* is his father.

As I mentioned in another post today about early immigrants to VA,
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.frith/386/mb.ashx
the documentation is so poor in most cases that the only hope for doing this is by DNA testing (and even then it will depend on luck in identifying and testing the right Frith family in England, based on whatever records might be available there).

An example of this problem is Elizabeth Parsons, who you say married Nathaniel Frith (c1620-1677). The family trees I am familiar with all claim she married Nathaniel Frith (c1669-1736), who is said to be the GRANDSON of the Nathaniel you mention. e.g. this one, which gives a pedigree for her, and makes it seem real:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
This one also questions the surname of the wife of Nathaniel born ~1620:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~grizzard/f...
Which version of the story is correct? Is there any hard evidence available to back it up?

As far as I know (and I admit much ignorance) the references to Elizabeth Parsons come from LDS / IGI WHICH CANNOT BE TRUSTED. Info from LDS / IGI is useful as a starting point, to lead the way for more research, but it is notorious for providing wrong information. It needs to be backed up by other documentation.

You may be aware of the research on early Friths in VA compiled by Tress Pittenger.
http://www.vagenweb.org/shenandoah/thrifttressms.html
It is excellent research but most of his early info is based on information from IGI. He is careful not to give it full weight, but he doesn't warn enough about the imagination and wishful thinking that went into many of the family trees at IGI.

Pedigrees going back through all-male ancestors can be checked or confirmed by DNA testing, and I would love to see more of this:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...

Pedigrees going back through females can't test descent by DNA reliably (yet), so are stuck with a need for documentation. I'd like to see documentation that Elizabeth Parsons married Nathaniel Frith (c1620-1677)

thanks!
Richard Thrift

Friths (& similar surnames) transported to Colony of Virginia 1637-1686

Many Friths and Thrifts whose families are from Virginia, USA, aspire to trace back to Richard Frith, gentleman, who accompanied Capt. John Smith to Jamestown in 1607. However there is little documentation from the early years of VA, so the only hope of doing this would be by DNA testing -IF we could identify Richard Frith's family in England and test them too. I hope at least we can use DNA testing to find out how many different families of Friths there are, even if we can't connect them all. That would be a start; surely it will help many families connect to a patriarch, and unite many groups who aren't aware of a connection.
Thrift /Frith /Firth Surname DNA Project
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...

Actually, the odds are that FEW IF ANY of the Friths from Virginia descend from Richard Frith of Jamestown, since so many Friths were transported in the 1600's. What follows are entries mentioning ~30 Friths (or similar surnames) transported to the colony of Virginia between 1637 & 1686. This is a preliminary version, provided by Sarah Grantham.
I am a descendant of Nathaniel Frith (c1620-1677) and Elizabeth Parsons through their daughter Joan, who married Roger Williams. I would be interested in any information you have dug up about where Nathaniel Frith and his wife came from and when they came to Virginia.
Thanks,
Sara

The King's Passengers to Maryland and Virginia By Peter Wilson Coldham

I found this listing in the 2006 edition of The King's Passengers to Maryland and Virginia By Peter Wilson Coldham. (If I give the link to the previews at the books.google site, Ancestry.com will probably delete this post. You can search for it, or ask me.) I also found what appears to be her mentioned in Proceedings of the Old Bailey, London. I'm not sure if she used the name Frith in MD, but she was tried under the name Firth. The sentence was probably transportation for 7 years, but of course we never know if the defendant returned to England.

To see ALL 192 of the Friths mentioned in the Proceedings of the Old Bailey, see
http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/search.jsp?foo=bar&form=s...

p. 9
Felons transported from London by the Gilbert, Capt.
Re: All early Friths in Virginia, USA, before ~1800

Can you help me document the early Frith families in Virginia? which of the following items pertains to which individual in which known family? (see my previous post)

The following are some of the Frith notes extracted from Tress Pittenger, A History Of My Thrift Ancestors
http://www.vagenweb.org/shenandoah/thrifttressms.html
[I excluded most items referring to Thrifts]

Often he uses the LDS International Genealogical Index (IGI) as his source.
CAUTION -Any item from IGI, and any item for which no source is listed, is UNRELIABLE. Such info is only for use as a starting point, until it can actually be CONFIRMED.
If you have any corrections or additions, or a better source for any of these, please let me know (a few are documented in my previous post).

In 1607 Captain John Smith made a list of the settlers at Jamestown Island including under the heading "Gentlemen", Richard Frith [Peter Wilson Cobham - The Complete Book of Emigrants 1(;07-1 @ p2.] In 1635 Robert Frith, age 23, came to Jamestown from London, England on the ship Assurance, and a week later Thomas Frith, age 17, came on the ship Elizabeth [Peter Wilson Cobham - The Complete Book of Emigrants 1(;07-1 @ p.166; p160.].
...
There are records of several Nathaniel Friths living in Virginia prior to 1677, all who married Elizabeths. The first, whom I shall designate as Nathaniel I, was born about 1598 and his wife Elizabeth, was born about 1602 [Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) International Genealogical Index (IGI) for Virginia.]. As Virginia was not colonized until 1607 their place of birth had to be England. I have no record of their coming to America, although the timing is such that Nathaniel I could have been the son of Richard who was with John Smith's company and he married a daughter of another member of that Company.

The next is Nathaniel born in Virginia in 1620 and an Elizabeth, spouse of Nathaniel Frith, born in Virginia 1625, whom he married in 1645 [Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) International Genealogical Index (IGI) for Virginia], (I will call him Nathaniel II, who may have been the son of Nathaniel I as the age difference is about right. However, the records show that a Nathaniel Frith married in 1623 but not to whom [Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) International Genealogical Index (IGI) for Virginia] and there is no evidence that this was Nathaniel I.

Nathaniel Frith II died in 1677 as his will made 3 January 1676/7 was proved 4 July 1677 [Wm. Montgomery Sweeney, Wills of Rappahancork County Virginia 1656- 1692 p.32]. In it he leaves his property to his wife Elizabeth and his two sons Nathaniel, born 1646 (whom I will call Nathaniel III) and William, born 1648 [LDS IGI Virginia] He also leaves a cow to his God-daughter Rebecca Williams, daughter of Jane Williams. I have a record of the birth of Joane (probably Jane) Frith to Nathaniel Thrift in 1630 and the marriage of Joane Frith to Roger Williams in 1670 [LDS IGI Virginia] Thus I believe she was Nathaniel II's sister and Rebecca Williams, his niece.

I have found no further records of the son William or any other children of Nathaniel II. As surmised above the William Thrift born to Nathaniel and Elizabeth Thrift in 1675 was probably the son of Nathaniel III. If Nathaniel II were born in 1620 and Elizabeth in 1625, they married in 1645, and Nathaniel III was born shortly thereafter, then if Nathaniel IV was born about 1669 and William in 1675, Nathaniel III would have been in his early 20s when Nathaniel IV was born and late 20s when William was born.

Thus I believe that the Elizabeth Thrift who married William Davis was the widow of Nathaniel III who died shortly after William was born and that my ancestor Nathaniel Thrift was her son.
...
I found other Frith/Thrifts in Virginia in this time period whom I cannot tie into what record I have. A Nathaniel Thrift was born about 1664 in Old Rappahanock County whose spouse was named Rebecca and there was a John Frith who married Anne about 1689, no county designated [LDS IGI Virginia] The latter had a son John born about 1715, a daughter Rebecca born about 1717 and a daughter Mary born about 1719, all born in Henrico County [LDS IGI Virginia]. I suspect the accuracy of the marriage date if the dates of birth are correct. John Jr. married Martha about 1740 and their children were William c.1764, Ann c.1766, Drury c.l768 who married Polly Martin 20 March 1798, Henry c.l770, Sally c.l772, and John c.1774 [LDS IGI Virginia]. Again the dates are suspect as it is too long between the date of marriage and the birth days are every two years.
...
A 26 September 1677 entry in the Order Book for Westmoreland County states that Francis Frith non-suits John Newton on 50 lbs of tobacco.
...
In the Order Book of Old Rappahanock County is an item dated 3 March 1685/86 in which a judgment for attachment was granted William Hurst against the estate of John Stafford. However, it was not to be levied on any of the estate of the orphans of Thomas Frith "which by intermarriage is now in the hands of Stafford".
All early Friths in Virginia, USA, before ~1800

I'd like to document the early Frith families in Virginia as completely & accurately as possible. We have a bunch of names & events, but it's not always clear how the names connect with each other. We need better info than that provided in some online family trees which say, for example, that Thomas Joseph Frith born 1765 was son of Joseph Frith who died 1740 and was born 1670. This misinformation is, let's just say, not convincing and not helpful.

If you have documentation regarding early Friths in VA (born before ~1800), please let me know (you can reply to me here or offline) and I will put it online in a form that will be useful to everyone interested. I’m looking for wills, deeds, witnessings, christenings, Bible records, gravestone inscriptions, anything. If you even just have families listed who aren't well documented, but that you still have good reason to believe are accurate, please let me know.

(And really, I'm looking for this info for all Friths everywhere, not just VA. I eventually want to repeat this process for every region that has a population of Friths. See
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr... )

Here are some of the early Frith families in VA that I know about, and would like help connecting together. There are probably others I don't know about. If you can add to what I have, or know of other families in VA before ~1800, please mention them in a followup post or offline.
[open the link, then click on the names to see more detail about each]

Robert Frith (d: BEF. 31 MAY 1658) & Elizabeth; Joseph & Anne
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...

Joseph Frith (b: BEF. 1695) & Anne, widow of Robert Goodwin
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...

Joseph Frith & Anne; Crosia (b: Bef. 1705), John F, & Rebecca
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...
John Frith (b: BEF. 1695 d: AFT. 1754) & Anne; John Rebecca & Mary; William Sally Archer Drury & Henry
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...

John Frith (b: ABT. 1710 d: AFT. 1754) & Rebecca Rudd; Thomas, John & Joseph
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...

Harbert Frith (b: ABT. 1778 d: 25 DEC 1843) & Martha; Jane & John; William Harbert, Charles Robert, & Martha Francis
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...

Capt. There are MANY examples of DNA results showing an accepted family tree to be incorrect, and this leads to finding the CORRECT ancestors. There are even more instances where family trees built on paper documentation were confirmed by DNA testing. I administer a project coordinating this effort for Frith, Firth & Thrift surnames. If you are (or know of) a Frith male who would consider a DNA test, please contact me. See
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Thrift-Frith-Firth/

I see that the following records exist but I don't have the details; can anyone provide the actual details? Can you provide transcriptions or scans of the wills, etc? Can you tell me which family each of these items belongs to?

Joseph Frith held land in York Co 1704 -was this 50 acres, or 50 pounds rent? Which family is he connected to (convincingly)?

After 1715 Joseph Frith married Anne who was previously married (before 1696) to Robert Goodwin. see
http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/va/schools/wmm...
Anne had a son, Martin Goodwin, who mentioned Anne in his will. What did he say?
Can anyone establish whether or not this couple were the Joseph & Anne who were parents of Crosia Frith Cobbs and her siblings? It has been suggested (based on the claimed but undocumented birth & marriage dates) that this was a second marriage for both Joseph and Anne, and that Crosia (assuming she was daughter of THIS Joseph & Anne) was daughter from a first marriage of either Joseph or Anne, and was not biological daughter of the two of them. Is there evidence for or against this suggestion?

I think I remember seeing that there was a court case (murder?) involving Joseph Frith (apparently the father of Crosia Frith Cobbs), but I have lost the details. He may have been a witness but I think he was named as a juror.

Did Crosia's brother John F. Frith have descendants?

http://files.usgwarchives.org/va/henrico/wills/wills1655-180...
HENRICO COUNTY INDEX TO WILLS AND ADMINISTRATIONS, 1655-1800 The Library of Virginia Will: Frith, Anne 1740
[This is Crosia's mother. In 1742, Robert was the executor of the LWT of Ann Frith, Crosia?s mother, and he was specifically named as her son-in-law in that document.
Reference:
Some Wills from the Burned Counties of Virginia, and Other Wills Not Listed In Virginia Wills and Administrations, 1632 - 1800". In this Will, he was specifically identified as the son-in-law of Ann Frith. It is noted from the Will that he also received the most substantial part of Ann's estate, despite the fact that a son John F. Frith was also named. John received 200 acres on the south side of the "second branch" including the plantation where he lived, along with the family bible. A daughter Rebecca Eddings received one shilling. Robert Cobbs received 200 acres on the north side of the "second branch" in addition to the plantation where he lived with all its adjoining lands, and "all the rest of my estate". Witnesses were George Hastenes, Danell Brown, and Mary Cobbs.
#3 ? Robert Cobb signed his LWT in Halifax Co, VA on June 30, 1768. It was proved on January 19, 1769. His wife Crosia was not named, therefore it is assumed she was already deceased. Robert did name five daughters, to wit: Ann Crumphill ... Elizabeth Cobb ... Sarah Cobb ... Mollie Anderson ... and Judith who was apparently already deceased, as Robert referred to her two children.
The daughters that were married were listed under their married name. Therefore, we can deduce that Elizabeth and Sarah were yet unmarried ... in 1768.
[This author has declined to send me transcriptions of these wills, does anyone have them?]

Is there documentation on Friths in the Revolutionary War? ...must be...

http://files.usgwarchives.org/va/chesterfield/wills/wills171...
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY INDEX TO WILLS AND ADMINISTRATIONS, 1712-1812 (partial)
Fryth, John 1781, 1782
Frith, Martha 1786
Frith, Polly 1791
Frith, Drury 1802
Frith, Drury 1809

Does anyone know ancestors of Thomas Joseph Frith (married Ruth A. He is named in his father's Will in which he was bequeathed the home plantation, two slaves, and lots numbers 43-44 in Williamsburg. Robert sold these lots with the buildings on them on December 10, 1725, to John Blair, merchant. Robert's first three children were born in Williamsburg, before moving to Henrico County, about 1730. His son, Oather, was his first child born in Bristol Parish, Henrico County.
...On July 25, 1749, Robert purchased 395 acres of land on the Staunton River, in Lunenburg County, Virginia, from a Robert Williams. This land was bequeathed to Robert's son, Samuel. In 1756, Robert bought 400 more acres in Lunenburg County, on the branches of Hunting Creek and Hunt's Branch. This 400 acres Robert sold to his son, Ambrose, in July 1761. By then, due to political reorganizations, this land was located in Halifax County, Virginia.
It is learned from Carrington's HISTORY OF HALIFAX COUNTY that a Robert Cobbs, Gentleman, was appointed Captain of a Company of Foot Soldiers in 1754, by the Honourable Governor, in the southern district of Lunenburg County. (This was the district that became part of Halifax County, in 1752.)
[4953] This was the interim period between the making of his will and the date it was proved.
[4954] In his Will, Robert named his children Ambrose, Sarah, Ann Crumphill, Elizabeth, Molle, Judith, and several other family members. Witnesses were Lot Martin Dickerson, James Cobbs, and Barbary Cobbs,
[4955] This is evidenced by the fact he was listed that year on the Titheables Roll for Lunenburg County.

http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/va/schools/wmm...
William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 6, No. 2, Supplement
(Oct., 1897), pp. 1-58
THE GOODWIN FAMILIES IN AMERICA BY JUDGE JOHN S.
I'm looking for information on John "Jack" Frith born in early 1918 or late 1917 to Wright and Sarah Roberts Frith (married 1913) in Lancashire, England. It is believed that his family lived in the Manchester area and he had brothers named James and Robert. He served in WWII with the Royal Canadian Air Force we are told and while stationed in Canada during 1943 would visit family members in New Castle, Pennsylvania by the name of Booth (related to Sarah Roberts, daughter of Letitia Booth Roberts) It is believed that after the war he married a woman named Diane (last name unknown) and had a son Anthony. I am searching for any information on this individual and his kin.

Margaret, I don't know if you can help - I've posted this separately, but I'm trying to track down a Joseph Frith, cabinet maker. I don't know where he's from unfortunatley, but his son William was a mariner, married a France Anne Johns in Pembroke Dock (maybe his ship was in dock there?) in 1862 - he was of age (big help!). They had several children but he never appeared on any census with her and she re-married in 1874. I've trawled other census's for a Joseph Frith who was a cabinet maker who may have had a son of William but to no avail so far - is there anyone matching this description in your tree? Thanks!

Joseph Frith - cabinet maker?

I am researching a William Frith b. abt 1834, he married a Frances Ann Johns in Pembroke Dock in 1862, the certificate says he was a mariner and states his father was a Joseph Frith, cabinet maker. He doesn't appear on any census returns with his wife and she remarrys in 1874 so I believe he died - I found a William Frith whose death was registered in Southampton in 1870 - could he have been at sea?!

I don't know where he or his family is from, I'm just having to make guesses! I've found a William Frith in 1861 census on board the 'Hornet' where it states his place of birth as Barnsley, Yorkshire - but I cannot find him in previous census's in that area, or a Joseph Frith, cabinet maker in that area - does anyone have a Joseph Frith, cabinet maker in their trees?

Thanks Jimmy,
Apparently whoever submitted the Thomas Frith lineage to World Tree did not actually research his life, as there are ample primary source documents to establish his age and birthplace. Unfortunately, on the Internet, false data tends to become accepted as true, but hopefully this will clarify a portion of his history.
Molly
