In an old issue of the "Maine Antique Digest" I saw a picture of a southern stoneware grave marker from North Carolina. It was incised "J. Fulton/Born/March 3 1809/Died/Sept. 8 1865". The issue was Jan 2008 page 29A. I am not related and I have no further information. Hope this helps someone!

Re: Samuel Fulton (c1792-1872) of Stokes County, NC

I have some information on the family. Based on Enoch's death certificate his father is Ed Lash and his mother Lucinda Fulton. HIs wife is the daughter of Laurander Hill. They are one of two black families living in the household of Samuel Fulton after the Civil War. Samuel was the first in his family to acquire a large holding of slaves and he was neighbor to some of the larger slave holders in the county the Hairstson, Lash and Hill families. Because Samuel died after the war we have no record of his slaves, but we do know something of them from deeds and church records. At this point, I don't see an obvious blood connection to the families. I suspect at least Lucinda was Samuel Fulton's slave. The Lash family lived nearby so her husband Ed could have been enslaved by that family or both were acquired by Samuel at some point and Ed associated his name with the Lashs. LIzzie Hill was probably enslaved by the Hill family who were neighbors to the Fultons, Samuel married 2ndly a Hill, so Lizzie may have come to the Fulton plantation with his second wife. Since no plantation documents have survived I am very interested in any oral family history you have about these people, what they did, how they interacted with the white family; any clues would be valuable information. The other black family that stayed on after the Civil War was Jordan Fulton who along with his mother Easter and brother Colin were enslaved by Samuel Fulton. I have both families put into a tree on Ancestry.com.

Thanks, John. This is helpful info.--especially the hints on proper pronunciation! I'll get out my atlas at home tonight and check out Berwick on Tweed. Maybe the long-standing dispute between the English and the Scots over this borderlands area provided an incentive for my Fulton ancestor to emigrate to America!

Best wishes,

Robert Keeler

Robert

There is indeed a county in the UK called Berkshire (Pronounced Bark-shire} and is no where near the Scottish borders or the river Tweed. However there is a town on the Scottish English borders called Berwick upon Tweed Berwick is pronounced (Berrick. It is a town that for many centuries was fought over by the English and Scots in territorial disputes, currently it is an English county however because of it location many Scots settled there, it is very possible that your ancester lived there before emigrating the America. I have no reason to believe there is a link between your family or mine but my father had a step brother called Alexander born in Greenock in the late 1890's. I mention this as christian names tend to get repeated in families.

Hi, Rod,

The only info. I have on my Fulton's Scottish ancestry is that supposedly George Fulton, father of my Alexander, as well as George W. Charles Carroll,Edington, etc. came from "Berkshire" and was reared "on the banks of the Tweed." Pretty non-specific and romanticized! As I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread, I can't find a place in Scotland called "Berkshire" though there is an English county of that name. Perhaps your records make all this more clear? I'd be most interested in hearing more!

I have it that the emigrant George Fulton came to Philadelphia where he married a Ms. Ware, related somehow to the family for which Delaware is named.

Best wishes,

Robert Keeler

Hi, Kritty,

I think we've got two Alexander Fultons here. My Gr. Gr. Granddaddy, youngest brother of Charles Carroll Fulton, shows up in the 1870 census in Baltimore with his wife Eliza and two children, Mary Virginia(my Gr. Grandmother) and James Fulton. The census record gives Alexander's age as 45 and birthplace in Pennsylvania. Eliza was born in Maryland and other sources give her maiden name as "Walnut." They were married in Philadelphia.

According to the bio. of Charles Carroll Fulton in the Maryland Genealogical and Memorial Encyclopedia, published in Baltimore around 1919, Charles had four brothers--two older and two younger: George Washington, William Ware, Edington and Alexander. Upon the deaths of their parents, George and Ann (Ware) Fulton in 1826, the eldest son was age 14 and the youngest age 6.

Note that this source gives the eldest son's name as "George Washington Fulton," whereas your Texas sources give his name as "George Ware Fulton."

I'm not sure if the Indiana Fultons fit in this kin group or not. Perhaps the George Fulton who emigrated from Scotland had a brother who named a son Alexander???

In reviewing my files to reply to your message I noted mention in another post in this thread of one of Charles Carroll Fulton's daughters, "Dolly G. Fulton" AKA "Glorina" Fulton. Her correct name was "Dolly Glorvina Fulton." She never married and after my Great Grandparent's died (Daniel Grant Emory and Mary Virginia Emory (nee Fulton), Dolly raised my Grandmother (Isabelle Emory) in her upscale apartment in Baltimore. Apparently the Fultons didn't care much for Daniel Grant Emory, so Dolly Fulton tried to officially change her cousin's name from Emory to Fulton. It didn't work and by Grandmother reverted to using her surname Emory when she became an adult.

If our two Alexander Fultons are related, it must be at least one generation earlier and that takes us back to Scotland.

Best wishes,

Robert Keeler

Fultons were Vikings and McCallisters/McDonalds too!

My late grandmother was Mary Louise Fulton (1920-2003) and her brother, William Palmer Fulton, submitted his DNA to the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) in 2006, shortly before his death in 2007. The results were quite surprising. Whit Athey's Haplogroup Predictor calculator predicts my Fulton line belongs to Y Haplogroup R1a1a*, which indicates this Scottish family descended from Vikings and based on my research, this seems to be true for the majority of Fultons in the U.S. and Scotland.

Even more interesting, a query of my great Uncle's marker values in the SGMF database, found close associations (39-42 out of 43 markers) with other Fulton lines (including some that never left Scotland) as well as the McCallister and McDonald families. There was even somewhat close matches with current day Norwegians and Swedes. The shared marker values among the Fulton, McCallister, and McDonald families and their TMRCA calculation indicate a shared common ancestor no earlier than the middle ages, most likely Somerled, who is thought to have been the second most prolific person on earth after Ghengis Khan. It is documented that Somerled's mother was a Viking and through DNA analysis, we now know his paternal line was also of Viking stock.

Dr. Doug McDonald, professor of Chemistry at the University of Illinois and noted population geneticist, thinks that our Fulton family branched off from the McCallister clan, itself a branch of clan Donald. He wrote on 5 May 2012:

"As to the Y ... I looked at your signature and because you have 15 at DYS 458 rather than 16, it means you are a branch of MacAllister but not McDonald; they split about 1300. Or, possibly, even an earlier split about 950 when the MacEacharns split off, just barely after the SNP L176.1 (which was discovered in me) happened."

Dr. McDonald helps maintain the expansive Clan Donald project at http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/. Overall, William Palmer Fulton's STRs matched the Somerled baseline 38 out of 43 markers. You can see his 43 marker values by using Y Search with User ID of "F36ER" at http://www.ysearch.org/.

Short tandem repeat (STR) Markers for William Palmer Fulton, Sr. (1928-2007), a 3rd great grandson of James Began Fulton (1765-1848).
Hi Robert… and Patty if you're still reading. : ]

I visited the Fulton Mansion this past weekend and found out George Ware Fulton had a baby brother - your GGG-Granddaddy - Alexander. The tidbits the curator mentioned (born in PA in 1820, family eventually went through Indiana) got my spidey senses tingling!

My GGG-Granddaddy was also an Alexander Fulton (b 1820/1, died 1886/96 I believe), married Laura/Eliza Jane Lucas in 1846 in Centre Co, PA, and went on to have a passel of kids (John Wesley, James B, Eliza Jane, Andrew J., Ester Ann, Susan/Susanna, and Irvin McBride). Born somewhere in PA, married there, then somewhere between '46 and '60 his family landed in Huntington Co, IN. With a BUNCH of other Fultons around. I haven't found anything specific for the years in between, other than random censuses saying the children born between those years were all born in IN.

If you don't mind, what details would you mind sharing on your GGG Granddaddy Alexander Fulton, baby brother of George Ware Fulton? If I can't find lines that match, finding lines to cross off my list works, too.

Thank you!

Haven't heard from him in while though but not heard from his brother. I knew their Dad, Tim. Met him numerous times whilst he was living over here in the UK.
Hi Lynn,

I send you a message the other day regarding your post, but I should also post here for the good of the group! I recently confirmed that Monemia maiden name is Love. There is a record in the "Maryland Marriages" database that has a James H Fullerton and Monemia Love being married in Baltimore in 1849...I've always assumed that to be James H Fulton. I confirmed this last week by finding his son's (James D. Fulton) death certificate, which had both parents names listed. It's a big breakthrough! Still looking for James H's parents. They are not listed on his death certificate. Ususally a hint is in the names they give their childern (aka. Henry T. and James Douglas) so looking for a Henry or Dogulas Fulton/Love may turn something up. I want to research the Pennsylvania Railroad records at the PA state archives...if we get lucky, that may have something. Will certinly let you know if I find anything!
Ken

Jacob Fulton was born June 3, 1869 in Chester Pennsylvania and died in Muncie Indiana January 13, 1958. His parents were James Fulton and Elizabeth Meade. I know Jacob and his brother (name unknown) went to live with an Aunt and Uncle in Elkton Maryland after the death of their parents. I cannot find what happened to his parents and I know this story because of a newspaper article on Jacob. I would appreciate knowing. I am stuck on this part of my relatives.
If anyone could help I would appreciate it.
Stephanie

I'm trying to find information on a Robert Fulton, possibly born 1795-1800 in New York. His wife was Rebecca Wilber of Putnam, CT, and he had a son, David (1823-1900) who was my ggg-grandfather. If David was Robert's first son, that could mean that Robert's father was also a David.

I saw a lot of David Fulton's being mentioned in the text of this will that you posted, so I thought I'd take a shot. Is there any chance you can help me?

Thanks,
Megan

Fulton is my GG Grandfather, his son LeRoy is my great grandfather and LeRoy's daughter (his only child) is my grandma (whom I was very close to) who just passed away in Michigan. Curious to see your lineage with the Fultons as well! Still can't find anything earlier than James H. Fulton...can you?

Thanks, Lynn

She is buried at St Mary Annes Episcopal Church Cemetery in Cecil Cnty, MD. I found her headstone there. I am anxious to see your family line...is the same as mine. Yes, James H Fulton, b. 1824 in MD and d. 1907 was a great fence builder for Pennsylvania railroad and is buried n the same cemetery as his wife Monemia. I have searched for James H Fulton's parents...no luck! Any ideas??
Thanks, Lynn

Hi, Patty,

I am a 3rd Great Grandson of Alexander Fulton, youngest brother of Charles Carroll Fulton and your George W. Fulton. I read in your post that our 4th Great Grandfather, George Fulton, emigrated to the U. S. from "Berkshire, Scotland." Do you have documentation of that and a date for his immigration? I can't find a Berkshire in Scotland on any map. There's an English county by that name, but nothing I can find in Scotland.

Your illustrious Fulton family in Texas was quite interesting to me. Thanks for sharing the story. I looked up the town of Fulton, TX and enjoyed what I read about the place and about the Fulton mansion.

I'd be happy to share the information I have on Alexander Fulton's line if you're interested. Just let me know.

Best wishes,

Robert Keeler

robertk@clackamas.edu

I located her in the Final Dawes Roll as part of the Five Civilized Cherokee Tribes. You can simply type in her name and review this information. Im in the process of establishing our lineage. Any information that you have would be helpful. I was told by my local tribal office that they no longer link you by percentage anymore but by descendants. Etta Phillips was of the Tahlequah Indian Reservation in Oklahoma. I am trying to reach that reservation to see if they are Federally recognized so that my family can apply for our enrollment number. I hope my information to you was helpful.

I do know that Monemia is buried at St Mary Anne's Church in North East, Maryland. She died 15 Apr 1876 according to her grave marker. I don't know if you use findagrave.com, but that is an excellent resource and you will find a picture of her grave on there. You must also be a descendant of James' son Henry (as am I) if you are looking at the Kershaw and Simpers lines to. I have a wealth of information on both those lines and I will be happy to share. I will start by giving you access to my online trees. That should be a good start. Let me know how else I can help!
Thanks,
Ken

Hi- My Greatuncle was David Fulton, he was born in Paisley, Scotland, Jun 11 1888. He moved to the US, arrived 18 March 1910. And he married Elizabeth Lydia Slow, who was the sister of my Maternal Grandmother in 1916. He died in Sept 1975, in East Aurora NY. Is this the David Fulton that you are related to? I have several pics of my Great Uncle David, who was a very sweet, gentle man...on my tree...He had a daughter, and son- Daughter was Elizabeth- AKA Betty...and a son John D-AKA Jack... I do have quite a long tree going back, if you are in fact related...Gail

Re: John Fulton: High Paisley, 1800 - 1849

Hi! My Grandfather was John Fulton, born in Paisley 1896-1976 in Buffalo, NY. His father was John Fulton 1854-1914,married Mary Laughlin (the spelling of her last name varies a bit- her brothers spelled it differently). He was the son of David Fulton, who was a Paisley shawl weaver, and he was married to Janet Bowes. He was a son of a John 1789-1862 - he was married to an Elizabeth Auld.... There is a family tradition of naming sons David and John, after a brother, or Gfather- so the oldest son of John was named David and the next son was named David...So far my research has turned up a zillion John and David Fultons... My Gfather said that if you threw a stone in the air, in the area of Paisley were he was raised... the stone would surely fall to earth and hit a Fulton... Anyway, it seems we have some common relatives???? I think...What's your opinion? Take Care, Gail

Hi, this is an interesting post. I have had this information passed down in my family also. I couldnt make the connection to Judge James Fulton only references to him from past relatives;I can make a connection to Robert Fulton(the Engineer 1765-1815)via his uncle John of Lisburn (1722-1803his fathers brother-James of Lisburn)John of Lisburn raised Roberts brother, Richard(a merechant banker 1755-1812)because their parents James of Lisburn 1720-1768 emigrated to Pensylvania, America with just Robert but not Richard, proberly because he(Richard) was 15+yrs. hope this helps.
