DNA Group Project

In an effort to try and obtain a better understanding of the relationships between the various Furnas/Furnass/Furnes/Furness/Furnis/Furniss groups, my uncle and I have started the Furniss and Furness group project at Family Tree DNA (http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Furniss).

I have spent over 30 years working on various family groups in New England (northeastern United States) trying to find the elusive links between families with limited success. Hopefully with some additional participation in this project we will be able to better understand the ancestral heritage.

If you or another family member would like to participate, please visit the web site and consider joining in the project.

Sean
Hi Karen
Reading your message and a prev message left by a cousin of my husband (are we confused yet lol) we certainly are related via Jane Ann and Samuel Barnaby, seems we are distant cousins - We have done a fair bit of tree research, its NOT on ancestry and currently its not live online - but will be, we didnt have much information on Jane Ann once she married so if you have the info on a tree please email us and we can add it "in" or at least add a link to the info. glenys_furness@hotmail.com
thankyou

Hello

I have just read your message re Samuel Barnaby and a DNA test which I submitted some time ago.

My great great grandfather was Samuel Barnaby and was born in Birstall, Yorkshire in about 1841. He was a coal miner and moved to County Durham where he married Jane Ann Furness. My family has always said that they had a relation who travelled to America on the Mayflower. So it looks as if we could be connected in some way.

BELATEDLY --- I found these postings on 28 Sept 2011 --- while looking for Karen Poole, who submitted her BARNABY family member's DNA to the Texas Lab: ftda.. This DNA sample matches the DNA of my maternal Barnaby family line (matrilineal test of my son) and the man who supplied the sample is named BARNABY. Do not yet know if it is 12 markers or more --- but surname & DNA match seems significant. Just remembered something (the answer may be disappointing) perhaps the test kit is the one I gave as baby gift to the child of my cousin --- and I already know about his relationship.

Our Barnaby line originated back on the Mayflower in 1621’ James Barneby (sic) , thought to be from England, married Lydia Bartlett (descendant of both Robert Bartlettt & Richard Warren. My ancestry goes via a certain SAMUEL BARNABY, --- an American revolutionary War Patriot, who served in the Massachusetts Militia. Samuel has been documented by the DAR. The Patriot,Samuel Barnaby married Sylvia Winslow. However there are 8 more “Samuel Barnaby” individuals in my file. I only know 3 of their spouses --- none matched Furness” spouse on this posting string.

Replies would be much appreciated, even if there appear to be no relationships, it would help (by elimination) and further research for all who read this message board.
Cheers, Ruth Filstead
Hello, I don't have info on Siblings etc of Peter Furniss however I have a family tree which shows Samuel Furniss son of Peter born 1759. Our tree is in early stages and I am trying to fill as I go and when I have time! Peter runs through the Family and there was another Peter Furniss in 1830 direct decendant from the Peter you are enquiring about. Email me on redfishdesigns@mail.com to see if we can shed any further light.

Many thanks
Sally

Im sorry but there is no baptism for a peter furnace/furniss in the eyam parish registers in 1743.
The only furniss entries in that year are for a James and a William.
Have you actually searched the original parish registers?
If that date is right then perhaps it is in the Bishops transcripts (if there are any)
And by the way you are welcome!

Furness - Darlington

Hi, we are researching the family tree and have our current line sorted and are trying to "fill" in the blanks as it were lol, we know that William Furness and Ann Sidgwick (Sedgewick?) had 11 children. Williams parents were Francis Furness & Margaret Woodmass, and his parents were John Furness & Ann Shutt. We are now trying to follow the siblings lines. This includes Thomas (born 1829) who married Hannah Whorton and had 6 kids (only one boy - Thomas born 1856). Thomas went on to marry (we believe Elizabeth Forster in 1863 and they had 11 kids (Elizabeth remarried in 1906 to James Preston as her 1st Husband Thomas died in 1903, and she had one further child)
Is anyone related to ANY of these lines
thankyou
please get intouch

Hi
I am researching my family line of the name Furness, in Westmorland, which goes directly back to Anthony, where it appears to stop, around 1685. This means the details of his father could have been copied from IGI who didnt know the father's details.
Anthony was born in Bentham, nr Lancaster in 1711, does anyone know details from Bentham, re. his father and family, etc?
Also John R Furness was killed in darlington uk in a railway accident 1896, why did Mary his wife move to Hartlepool?
Michael Furness died in 1865, John's dad, and the family moved out of the house/farm they had in Cliburn, Westmorland? Again, why?

Any help gratefully hoped for!

hi there,

I realize you posted this comment 6 years ago (!), but am hoping you're still around. I have just come to suspect that my own family came from Northants prior to Birmingham (where I have been stumped for a year). If you know your history in that region going back that far, would you know of a George Furnace/Furness/Furniss/etc being born circa 1795?

If you're still hunting for your family's origins possibly in Derbyshire or W. Yorks, I have been corresponding with a couple who REALLY know their Furness tree up there, they don't use the internet, but if you send me your mailing address I'll pass it on. They're lovely and would probably be pleased to check their records to see if there's a connection.

Warm regards,
Colin Furness
Toronto, Canada

He was the 9th of 10,and brother of my great-grandfather Stephen (1848-1911). They were the children of John Furness & Averill Eastor Wilson. Thomas (1836-1905) John (1837-1885) Mary Jane (1839-1923)Eliza Wilson (1842- ?)Robert Wilson (1844-?) Wilson (1845-1893)Stephen (1848-1911) Alfred (1850-?)Christopher (1852-1912) Eliza Annie (1856-1931). As you can see I am still working on this lot!! I hope some of this may help you in your research.
Peggy
Thank you so much for your information. That was Dixon Taylor Sharper junior, his wife was Mary Alice(Burgess). The only names that I recognize on the attendance list are :-Tom & Vera, Norman & Gertrude, will have to check out the others, maybe they were Sharper(s)? Also, I noticed a Mrs. Mann. She is of interest to me as she appears in several articles and I have heard her mentioned many times by the previous generation.

The marriage of Stephen Furness & Mary Ann Sharper, yes, I have that information, and I recently visited Mary Ann's grave at Brakne-Hoby cemetery, in the province of Blekinge, in southern Sweden. She died Oct 17, 1898. Many of the villagers I met were able to give me information on her which they had heard from their ancestors - most interesting. Stephen returned to England in 1900.

Hi again, sorry I should have been more clear about my interest. I started my genealogy research in 1971 and the thing that made me curious was a story my father told about his moms family - her maiden name was: Katherine Furness, my grandmother. The story was that her was descended from England and that she was related to a Baron. I have never made the connection and with your information it explains why. The information in her tree currently leads to her father Ezariah Zacharia Furness 1851-1936 and his father,John Furness 1811-1867 and his father as James Furness 1787-1870 which is why I asked if you knew about your John's family. Thanks for all the info will check out all the references you mentioned.

I am looking for information on DIXON SHARPER FURNESS, born
May 23, 1873 at Brakne-Hoby, Blekinge, Sweden. He was the second son of Stephen and Mary Ann Furness. Sharper being Mary Ann's maiden name, and her father was Dixon Taylor Sharper of West Hartlepool. I cannot find any information on him anywhere, and just hope that someone out there may have.
There must be a death record of him somewhere? The Swedish Archives have only his birth and baptism record and no other information. Mary Ann is buried at Brakne-Hoby 1898, and Stephen returned to England in 1900.

Dixon is my brick-wall, my mystery man!
pf

No, I have not got my family history onto Ancestry yet. What is it you want to know about Christopher? Are you related? Whats the interest? Excuse me being curious!!
Theres lots of information on him in books in the Reference dept of most libraries - ie: The "Who's Who" 1905, 1910. "Dictionary of Business Biography 1860-1980, Vol 2 published by Butterworth's of London, UK in 1984 - pages 443-448.
"Harmsworth Business Encyclopedia & Commercial Educator" Vol.3 page 2095.
"Oxford Dictionary of National Biography" page 189
Then theres the web - Port Cities: Hartlepool/Building Ships, there is a good biography on him. The Durham Mining Museum - Archives has his Obituary.
I hope that this will be of some help to you? Try "Googling"him!! also am sure that Wikipedia has something on him too! I am really curious about your interest in him, and wonder if you are a family member or someone researching him in relation to the shipping line or his politics?
Christopher was the younger brother of my great-grandfather Stephen Furness. Christopher married Jane Annette Suggitt in 1876, one son Marmarduke was born in 1883.

She had 6 children, have no knowledge of her husband.
Is this of any use to you.
Good look with your hunting.

Since I first posted, I've found that the Furness I'm looking for is Samuel who came to the USA (Astoria, NY?) between 1840-1850. He was the father of my great grandmother Eliza Furness.

Samuel was a son of Richard Furness, the poet.
I have his birth and baptism information.
I'm looking for UK census information on him in 1830-1840 time period. Family lore says his wife was Mary. I'm wondering if they married in UK or if they met in the USA.

Any light you can shed is appreciated.
Gayl Callis
