The 1827 GA Land Lottery awarded land to Randall Gaddess orphans, of Franklin Co GA, Walters Dist. Other winners from same location were Alexander, Enoch, and Mary Gaddess. This is not my Gaddis line, but I think it might be worth research.

Gaddis DNA

I would like to urge as many Gaddis men as possible to look at and consider doing the ancestry.com DNA sample. Some time back Larry Gaddis and I were able to solve a long standing mystery and confirm through the DNA samples that Rees Gaddis of Washington Co, PA and Campbell Co, KY was, as hoped, indeed a brother to the John, Robert, Thomas, and Henry Gaddis of Fayette Co, PA. These were all sons of William Gaddis who lived in Frederick Co, VA and died in Hampshire Co, VA (WV) in 1773.

Only eight Gaddises are in the ancestry.com DNA database. If several more were to add your 46 marker Y-STR tests to the collection we would have a much improved chance of sorting out the several Gaddis lines. It was fun for Larry (whom I did not know) and me to solve one Gaddis mystery; but as you all know there are lots of other Gaddis mysteries out there. More Gaddis participants would be a huge resource. Next time you are in ancestry.com click on the DNA tab then browse around and search for the surname of Gaddis. You will see just a few of us there.

Jim Gaddis

Fred and Hattie were my grandparents. My father was Charles. They were separated when the kids were younger. I remember Hattie living in Royalton, Ill and visiting her as a child. She passed away in Duquoin Ill, I have not been able to trace her information back very far. I believe she was born in Kentucky, My father was killed in Utah in the coal mines and Fred moved back to West Frankfort where he died. I believe when they were in Utah all the boys were there, Bill & Earl and their father Fred all worked in the coal mines. I was sorry to hear that all the brothers and sisters of my father have died. Any other info on where everyone else is would be appreciated. I believe at one time Bill Jr and his brother lived in Little Rock AR. Would love to hear from you. Anne Ralls

The town or year I can not say. His wife was Scotch and Irish. My Father's grandfather also named William Gaddis moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. His wife, English, named Anabelle. They had 5 boys 4 girls."

1840 Census of the Southern Division, Randolph Co., NC, Page 63
William GADDIS males two under age 5 (1835-1840), one 30-40 (1800-1810); females one under age 5 (1835-1840), two age 5-10 (1830-1835), one 20-30 (1810-1820).

1850 census of Randolph Co., North Carolina (Southern Division ) GS 58133 pt 23, no. 928 on page 125. William's age is 45.

Flossie had written that William as born 27 May 1792 and Casandy Lucinda Laughlin was born 18 Aug 1801. Since the dates are so different I have chosen to use the census ages for now.

Additional notes written by Flossie Gaddis: William Gaddis, Raleigh NC married Miss Lucinda Laughlin of Ashville [Ashboro/Asheboro??] NC. I do not know the year or month. 10 children were born to this union, 5 sons and 5 daughters, Elizabeth [Betsy on the 1850], Lucinda, John, Robert, Dovey Anne, Casandia who died at 16 years old, Lindsey, Archibald, William and Mary, nicknamed Polly for being so inquisitive.

Grandmother [Lucinda/Selinda] Gaddis's father was Irish, John Laughlin, a Policeman. Her mother was German, American born, was a beautiful woman, a painter of arts. Elizabeth Gaddis's father's eldest sister was judged the most beautiful girl in Raleigh NC. I asked father why he seldom spoke of his ancestors--when and where they came from. He smiled and replied, if you had heard them brag of their royal blood and old country as much as I did you would understand my silence. Grandmother Laughlin praised Dublin. Grandfather Gaddis bragged about Glasgow, Scotland being better than anything or anyone in the U.S. So you see why I am just a good American citizen. Praise all, criticize none.

At another time, Flossie Gaddis wrote: My Father Robert Gaddis's great-great-grandparents came from Scotland and Ireland. The men folk were builders of stone and brick. The next generation was race horse raisers and gold miners. Both professions were profitable. They made a lot of money. My father followed his grandfathers in stock raising and gold mining. His father, William Gaddis the Third and his brother Robert Gaddis and his brother-in-law John Laughlin were operating a placer gold mine when he, William Gaddis, my grandfather, died near Raleigh NC. My father took grandfather's place and worked at the mine. Later on, I do not know how long, his uncle John died, age 89, leaving Uncle Robert's two sons and my father [working the mine]. His wife had died two years before that. They sold the mine. Father put most of his share of the mine money in the bank in his mother's name and went to Indiana. Years later he went to Kansas City. There he married Miss Elizabeth Steel, a school teacher from Vermont. In less than a year she died from premature childbirth, due to an accidental fall. Two years later he married my mother Miss Fannie Davis, Lawrence, Kansas.

I'm waiting right now for a copy of a deed reference to land along Jacksons Creek, and hope that will give me yet another starting point for Linden's parentage. Please feel free to contact me via email: debra.gallagher@sympatico.ca if you would care to. Have some pictures of Linden's granddaughter Bashaba (Bashie) Gaddis (my maternal grandmother)b Marion, Beat 8, Alabama, 1877 (although the 1880 census lists her as being "1" then; she always claimed 1877.

In short, I can't relate Linden to your Silas yet; appears he (Linden) is age-contemporary of your Silas. Wondering whether Silas's father William could have been uncle to Linden? Do you have more information on William?

Linden James Gaddis shown on 1850 US Census pages filed in Cherokee GA as head of household Emily wife, children Arminda (various spellings on various websites)age 3 and John B. age 1. John B. is my g g grandfather. One correspondent has Linden b 1820 in Randolph Co NC. USGEN Archives 1790 Randolph Co NC Census shows your Archibald and Susanna Gaddis. Randolph Co GenWeb archives show deed(s) to William Gaddis land abutting Jacksons Creek, but I have to revisit to get the date and then confirm. Both these citations are only transcriptions.

Other Linden/Emily children (all noted on Family Search as born in AL) were Jeffrey, Andrew J (ackson), and Margaret Ann -- b Marion,Beat 8, AL.

Hope this response isnt too disappointing, and that you'll share any William information you have.

Also, some trees give his date of death as 16 March, 1835. Does anyone have any information as to the SOURCE of this date?

I have collected lots of marriage certificates and death certificates throughout the family on both sides. To know for sure my info is correct I really really like to see actual documents! lol I love when I find out the relative got married in Tushka, Atoka, OK because they have the most complete records online. A lot of them lived in Tushka for a while. A lot of others lived in the Mill Creek area but hard to find records from there... and Carter County is next to impossible because of that fire. The other day I finally found the area in Alabama where a lot came from and guess what...they had a fire too! lol

Shirley

Silas Gaddis was born in 1827 in North Carolina. He married on 28 Jul 1844 in Randolph County, NC, Lucinda Pierce, born 1828 in NC, daughter of Redman Pierce and Lucy Parrish. My research lists William and Selinda Gaddis as Silas' parents, and Jesse Gaddis, 1825-1900, (b Randolph County, NC, d 1900 in Green County, Tenn,) as Silas' older brother. Research I've recorded as per Census and Marriage Records, lists Silas' younger siblings: John Gaddis b 1830 NC; Betsy Gaddis b 1833 NC; Lucinda Gaddis b 1835 in NC; Robert Gaddis b 1836 NC; Cassandra Gaddis b 1833 NC; Sarah A. Gaddis b 1840 NC; William Gaddis b 1843 NC; Lindsey Gaddis b 1845 NC; Archibald Gaddis b 1848 in NC.
Please share your information regarding Linden, and how you find him connected with my gg grandparents, Silas & Lucinda Gaddis of Randolph County, NC. Thank you for your inquiry.

Responding to your response to my query on Linden Gaddis. Thanks for your quick reply. The coincidences continue to thrill me. My mother Josie Downs Hawkins, daughter of Bashie GADDIS Downs, and granddaughter of John B. GADDIS, was born in Coalgate, OK, and there MAY be a stillborn infant sister buried there. I'm continuing my search for Linden and before, starting again in North Carolina in 1820 +/-.

Sorry... none of those line up with my Gaddis line. Mine starts with a John Gaddis b. 1787 Alabama... then all of his kids were born in Tennessee...and from there migrated to Oklahoma. They were mostly in Overton, White, and Davidson Counties in TN. From OK they spread west.

If I run across your Linden in my searches I will be sure to let you know. I can't get back past the John in Alabama in my line. I was hoping to find when they came to this country but no such luck so far.

Shirley

I too have Gaddis family who went to Oklahoma. Probably chasing the wrong line with Jesse Gaddis, but maybe further back?

Linden Gaddis, b. abt. 1820 in North Carolina, married Emily Dickerson 1845 Cherokee County Georgia, fathered John B. (Bunion, Bunyan?) Gaddis July 1848, according to his gravestone, in Wetumka, OK, where he moved in abt. 1916. John B. was born, I believe, in Georgia, and had older sister (Arminda, Amonida?) also born in Georgia, and younger brothers Jeffrey, Andrew Jackson and Margaret Ann.

John B. Gaddis married Nancy Wilmeth Mills, and fathered my grandmother Bashie (Bashaba) b 1877 Marion Alabama. Subsequent children: Arch Allan, Fannie (died, age 6); Maggie [Brown] (d.and buried Wetumka, OK), Lovis (b. Klamath, ORE), Cleveland (Josiah 1st name on gravestone in McMahon Graveyard, OK); JACKSON(family history says died in Arizona in 40s, but I haven't found a grave/record)George; Madie (died 1916, Quitman, TX); and Mabel (died California, 1970s). First child Bashie "eloped" with the hired hand J. J. DOWNS at age 15 or so. All their children, including my mother, their 4th, were born in OK.

As I re-read your April post a connection looks less likely. Do you see anything? I'm really on a search for Linden and before. Of course will gladly share anything I have.

Linden GADDIS reportedly born North Carolina 1820 - 1822; querying your post because of North Carolina reference; haven't found Linden's parents. Do you know birth years for Silas/Lucinda? Linden would have left NC by 1850, I believe, but maybe his father/mother would have remained in NC?

It was finding Sam & Dud on a list one day, either in the same house or side-by-side, that got my searches "unstuck". Aunt Ruby only remembered Grampa Robert's brothers were Sam, Dud, & Bud so I had no way to search for them. Until I found Sam/Oscar with Dud/Margret that I finally knew who was Dud and who was Bud. lol

Did you mean that Jack, Mae's son, was in the penitentiary? I only have info on him in the 1930 census (he was born in 1922)... and then I have his SS death record for 1995 in Ardmore. Never found anything on him being married or in jail. lol I just found that all three went out there and Joe & Edgar stayed, but Jack had at some point gone back to OK. Edgar died in Brawley but haven't found where Joe is yet. Mae's youngest son was Albert L (or D) born in 1928 but I have nothing on him after the 1930 census.

I've been collecting pics of relatives while doing the family tree. I have two of your Mom and several of your Dad. Today I found one of Maggie Bessie and her husband, Barney Morgan. I have a beautiful baby pic of Moses's wife Murlie. It's my favorite baby pic ever. I love old pics. I love when I find their marriage certificates. I have Hester's & Robert's... and I have Jesse's & Alta Mae's marriage certificate. It was so cool when I found that and realized my grandfather, Robert, was a witness (and the other witness was Joe Gaddis).

Jesse, John, & Ninnivah's parents were John H Gaddis (b.1787 Alabama) and his wife, Susannah (no last name)... but that is as far as I got on the Gaddis line. Some of the trees on here have John's son, John, being married to his mother and being born way after his children, so it has been hard getting info. lol

Now as for Matilda Seago... I have her line back to 1790 England. Following the maternal sides of the Seago lines I have some back to 1560 England (we had knights!). One branch landed in Plymouth, MA in 1632. One landed in Newberry, MA in 1634 and one of his sons was involved in starting Yale College. One branch was a big part in the witch trials in Newberry, MA but when his own wife was accused they decided to rethink how much they believed accusers and the trials ended. We even are related to Nathan Hale, the famous patriot the British hung in NY as a spy. Then in our more direct family we have larcenists, murderers, professional gamblers, famous porn producers, and Indians. lol Quite a diverse history attached to our simple family of farmers.

You were so lucky to have thought of family history while your Mom was still alive. Aunt Ruby and I both wish we had thought to ask questions while our parents were still here. How cool you did a book on your Mom's life. That would be interesting to read. I got a lovely picture of her from one of the trees on here.

Yes... all the other kids were married. It was so strange to see him having children the same time his kids were having their children! lol Sam & Johnnie Oscar married about 1911... Robert-Hester married in 1913... Ann married Royce Smith around 1914 and George Cavner before 1920... Ada had passed away sometime along in there so that left Elmer & Roy at home for a short time. Because I have that your parents married around 1926 and Roy (or Dud) married Margaret about 1923.

I will have to check the censuses I have to see if I have the Danleys ever lived near Minnie or that family before they moved to CA.

Ruby, Lavene, and Mary are the only ones left of the kids. All the boys have passed away. Uncle Moose (Wilson) had passed away in 1990, Uncle Raymond in 2001, Tude in 2006, and Uncle Don passed away sometime between Raymond & Tude. I only remember the dates because I have pics of all their headstones except Uncle Don because he wasn't ever buried. Aunt Ruby lost her husband, Gerald, around this past Christmas. Aunt Lavene is in Wyoming and Aunt Mary is up in Oregon.

Mae Danley married ggf Tude in 1917 when she was 17 and he was about 56, and they had Elmer & Roy with them. They always lived in Berwyn/Gene Autry as far as I can tell (although Eschol's obit says she was born in Baum). She moved to Ardmore sometime after he passed away and didn't remarry. She died after her brother, Charlie, in 1971 and before her sister, Myrtle in 1972. Her sister, Myrtle, married Jack Cavner (brother to the George Cavner that Aunt Ann was married to)...and they were always in the Ardmore area. Mae's brother Charlie Danley, lived most his life in Ardmore then moved to Amarillo and died 10 years later (somewhere in there he was married and divorced). Her brother, Leonard, I can't find since he was 8 in 1900. Actually neither the parents or children show up in census after 1900, except the two girls because they got married. I guess the family could have also moved to CA. I know Aunt Ruby, Mary, & Granny went to CA for one summer after my father came home from the war, and that's where she met her first husband and he followed her home.

Shirley

Linden J. GADDIS is my g g grandfather. His son John B. (Bunyan, Bunion?) GADDIS buried March, 1925, in Wetumka, Hughes Co., OK. Have incidental information but not much documentation on Linden's offspring from at least two wives. I too followed the GEDDES line, but am convinced it's the wrong one for Linden. Do you want a picture of John B.'s grave?

I can't find where Uncle Mon died or is buried. For some reason the other day I added that he was in the Lehigh cemetery in OK... but for the life of me I can't remember where I found that info. lol

I will definitely be asking Aunt Ruby if she remembers the reunion. We have about 48 years of talking to squeeze into one short week. ha! We email all the time but it's not the same.

Yes, Tude and my mother, Marjorie, had five children. Robert Tude, Ruthie Jean, me, Sandra Jean, and Priscilla Ann. Ruthie died when she was 3 months and Sandra died when she was 6 months. My brother and I finally got headstones for them while he was out there taking care of my father's burial. They are all in the Young cemetery in Gene Autry. Then I found out from Ruby that great grandfather Albert "Tude" is buried there without a stone, and probably Rosie (can't find when she died either). I just know she must have died before he married Mae Danley in 1917. We haven't figured out when Albert & Rosa's daughter Ada died either... but she disappeared off censuses in 1910. Aunt Lavene is supposed to be checking Granny's bible (Hester) for us. She must have written this stuff down. Also Robert & Hester had a daughter, Robbie Ann, who died shortly after birth and she is in Young Cemetery. We have lots of unmarked graves there. They also lost an 8-month old son, Virgil, between Uncle Wilson and Uncle Raymond... but they were living up in the Mill Creek area then so we don't know where he was buried.

Aunt Ruby would really like to find Hester's parent's graves, Jackson & Matilda, which are supposed to be around Bokchito, OK.

Shirley

Besides Sam and your dad, Bud, going to CA, several of Albert's & Mae's sons went out there too. They had Joe, Jack, Edgar, Albert Lee, and a daughter Eschol. She stayed in Ardmore but I think all the boys went to CA. I know Jack came back because he died in Ardmore. I know at least Edgar died in CA.

I am way in the top of New Hampshire where the temps can be 30 below zero in the winter. lol

I'm glad you mentioned Tommie's military funeral... because I just ran across a listing for him in the military but wasn't sure it was the right Tommie. I finally found a link today that told me where Dud's son Clyde was buried so I'm going to add a findagrave memorial for him. He died in Normandy in WWII. All Aunt Ruby knew was he wasn't returned to his parents for about a year after he died.

I have to print out a list of all the Gaddis graves I have found in OK for Aunt Ruby because she wants to try to go find them when she gets home. Then she can send me pics of their stones if they have them. When I find where any of the relatives are buried I put a listing for them on findagrave with as much info as I know. I've been photographing an entire cemetery up here because of working on my husbands family tree. Most of his relatives are there so I decided to do the whole cemetery since it wasn't on findagrave before this.

Shirley

Wow... I have a lot of names to add to the family tree. lol

I have the Gaddis line back to the 1700's (and some of the branches off that all the way back to the 1500's). But the Mitchell line is stuck at your great grandfather (my great great grandfather), Albert (I have him as Albert Lee), married to Elizabeth Wright. They had Albert Lee "Tude", James Samuel, Robert L, Marshall L., and Anna. Marshall killed himself during his second 5-yr tour in the military in 1896... during the Indian Wars. So sad. My great grandfather was always listed as Albert Lee... until the 1930 Census with Mae and then he was listed as Tude Mitchell. What a surprise when I found that census because then I finally knew where my father got his name from! lol

For the life of me I can find no records of great great granddad Albert before he married Elizabeth, so I have no idea who his parents were. I do think he might have had a sister named Susan... and maybe one with the initials A.L. I also can't find his death date. I just know he was with the family in 1870 TN, but in the 1880 census Elizabeth was with all the kids in Arkansas and she was listed as E.B. Stewart, widow. Don't know if he died and she remarried and that one died too or not. Can't find her death either.

It gets hard trying to keep all these names straight because so many families used the same names for kids. I have to keep double checking to make sure if I am working on the right one. With the Gaddis's it is all the Jesses and Thomases... with the Mitchells it's all the Alberts and Roberts. I really had to start paying attention when a Mitchell married a Gaddis and then down the road a Gaddis married a Mitchell. Lots of twisting branches. ha!

Shirley

Hi Carol! Nice to meet you. No we didn't meet in 1999. We moved from Gene Autry to NH in 1963. My parents split up and my father moved back there after I graduated in 1968. Tude was my father... Hester my grandmother. It is Ruby that is coming to see me next week. I haven't seen Aunt Lavene since we drove to CA in 1960 to see her and Aunt Mary. Uncle Don being on a tear sounds like him. lol I grew up knowing my Uncles Don, Wilson (we called him Uncle Moose), and Raymond. Uncle Raymond was married to Birdie at that time and his children from another marriage were Betty Jean, Loretta, and Roy. I knew great Aunt Ann from when she lived with Granny for a while in Ardmore. But until Aunt Ruby started filling me in on the tree I never knew she had ever been married. Her daughter Fanny died in 2006 and is in the Hillcrest Memorial cemetery in Ardmore, where Aunt Ann is buried. I found Fannie's obit on findagrave. I have that she had three girls and one boy, but I have no dates on them yet so don't know if they all lived.

I remember Granny's brother Carrol Monroe, who I knew as Uncle Mon. I never met my grandfather, Robert Lee. And until I started this tree I didn't know anything about my great grandfather, Albert & Rosy or his second wife May. I was surprised to learn that May had been living in Ardmore while I was a child and I never knew about her or her kids. Uncle Dud & Juanita lived across from us in Gene Autry when I was just 4 or so. I didn't remember him but remembered calling her Aunt Juanita... wasn't even sure she was really my Aunt until Aunt Ruby just clarified that for me. lol My parents aren't alive now so I can't ask them if I ever met Sam and Bud.

Wow... so much info. I have to go read all your other posts and print them out so I can update my files.

Shirley

I just yesterday took over the findagrave listing for Thomas Eli and Effie and filled in the dates and bios. They are both in the Coalgate Cemetery in Coalgate, OK. So far I had that there were four daughters with his first wife... Mary Irene, Sally Jane, Julia Ann Lee, and Cordia. With Effie I only had found 7 children so far... Tommie, TC, Ada, Otis, Josephine, Raymond, and Olita June. I also found his daughter Mary Irene married a Hiaumet and is buried in Mount Cavalry, Mena, Arkansas with her husband and son. I can't find where your Mom's Mom was buried yet... and I had her name as Mary Emma King.

I just started working on trying to find the ones buried in CA, like Tommie, TC, Raymond, and your Mom. Then I have to track down all my Mitchell relatives who also moved out there and were buried there.

Oh wow! So we are related. :) Robert was my grandfather... my father was his son, Tude. Funny you should answer this just now when I was just trying to find where your father and mother are buried in California! I've been trying to work on findagrave links to get all my relatives together and fill out my family tree on ancestry before my Aunt Ruby comes to visit me from OK next week. Haven't seen her in almost 48 years. Would love to be in touch with you to fill out any other information I am missing in the family tree.

In your other note you said you saw Moses play his guitar when you were a child. Until I recently found a pic of him with his guitar as a young man and added it to my tree on ancestry I didn't know he played a guitar. :) I never got to meet any of these relatives I don't think, unless it was when I was very very young. The oldest relatives I remember were my great-Uncle Mon, Hester's brother, and Robert's sister, my great-Aunt Ann. Aunt Ruby and I can't figure out if I would have ever met any of the others since a lot of them went to California before I was born in 1950. I do think I might have known Roy & Juanita when I was very young though.

Would love to chatter with you in email if you want.

Shirley
