Hi Tim, how wonderful!! Yes that's my connection all right. The grandparents of my husband were Percy Gain and Daisy Freda Elizabeth Burt.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to contact you as your email address doesn't seem to be available to me without a subscription. If you would click on my user name my email address should come up. But just in case it doesn't I will type it here but with at for @ to avoid spammers.
jaybelnzatxtra.co.nz

Hope this makes sense to you. I would love to hear from you. And of course, happy to try and fill any gaps you may have also

Since I posted the message you responded to, I now have the family passenger info to NZ. I hope to be visiting my mother-in-law later this week, so it will be great to share my findings with her.

I see there are others at the bottom of the message page researching Gains in Hastings as well! I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards
Jeanne

My Great Grandfather Enoch's son was named James Edward, as well as my dad and myself. I have the geneology for this line of Gain's starting with William in 1682.
Sheila, I wonder if you can help me with info surrounding Charles & Catherine Gain. I have a tangled mess with Elias Gain (b. 1827) who married Mary Elizabeth Davisson. Some folks have Elias' parents as Charles Gain (s/o Thomas) & Nellio Prouse. But I haven't managed to find any info about a Nellio. And, while I have Elias b. 1827, marriage records show Charles and Catherine as marrying in 1825. Was Catherine Elias' mother? In another place, I found an Elias (with close birth and death dates) as the son of Joshua Gain and Mary (Catherine's parents). I think Mary would have been too old to have a son born in 1827. Do you have Elias in your database? I'd appreciate any bit of info that might help straighten me out here.

Jay, I am embarrassed to be so slow in answering your kind response to my query. We were traveling when you posted and I thought I'd get back to you after we returned home. We've come and gone again several times. I hope you are still interested.

Do I understand that your name is James Edward Gaines? That seems to have been a popular name. I think I have managed to untangle some confusion between two James Edwards born about the same time. One was apparently your "namesake," son of Thomas (found in Harrison Co. deaths & Inventories, Settlements & Sale Bills at the Court Hosue, d. 1893 Harrison Co., WV). The other was the son of Jacob & Eve Ash (found in deeds to Jacob's heirs, d. 1903 in Gilmer Co., WV).

I would love to touch base with those doing Gaines genealogy. I great grandfather's name was James Henry Gaines married to Katherine Maddox in Alabama in 1882. I have attempted several different ways to get more information on James' father and wondered if it could be your line. I have been to Alabama doing research and really came up with nothing that I could prove. My g-grandfather died young? His youngest was only 18months old. I located this in the census record as his wife was living with her father. I can't find my g-grandfather in the census records for sure as James Gaines was such a common name in the south. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you, Kathy Sharp

I even tried other spellings of the many that were used.

I received information noting my Shaffer, Shaefer, ? family may have been from WV. When or if they moved to Ohio, the family split from there and I know one went to NM and another to Colorado. One lived many years in Ohio, that being my Grandmother.

I have finally found (with help) the resting place of my Grandmother that died c 1934. She had a sister that married a Todd, two brothers, and I believe her parents or Father were still living at that time. If alive they died shortly.

I would like to check to see if you are still online, if so I will be happy to share more information.
