Searching for Sarah Gale born England c.1802, transported 1837

I am researching the life of Sarah Gale who was born in about 1802, convicted of aiding and abetting a murder in April 1837 (at which point she was living in Camberwell, London) and transported to Australia together with her 4 year old son, George, in July 1837. It seems she married in Australia and died there in 1888.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Anna

My maternal grandmother's name was Stella Eva Gale (1941-2010). Her parents were Norman Ellison Gale (1898-1984) and Mary Alice Henley (1907-1993).

Norman went by his middle name Ellison. His mother was Ida May Susannah Gale (1879-?). We do not know who is father was, though speculation is that Ellison's father was a Boutilier.

Ida's parents were William Norman Gale (About 1845-1909) and Mary Margaret Jane Noonan (About 1834-1925).

William's parents were John and Rachel Gale. I do not know Rachel's last name or dates. John was born 1808 in England and died October 1, 1865, Halifax NS.

This is where my Gale research hits a brick wall. =( Any help you can give would be very much appreciated.

Searching for Ida Susannah Gale!! (Help Please!!)

I'm on the hunt for my great great grandmother Ida Susannah Gale.

She was born in September of 1879 in Lunenburg Nova Scotia Canada to Mary Jane Noonan and William N. Gale.

I know she married at least twice and had children by at least three different men including:

Ellison Norman Gale (b. 1897 to father ??? Boutilier)
William D. Hiltz (Born 1899 to father Reuben Hiltz)
George Golden/Goldon (birth date unknown to father ??? Golden/Golden)

She married one Reuben Seaforth Hiltz on October 9, 1900, but they were separated within a year and divorced some time after that.

I found Ida on the 1901 Census of Nova Scotia, Canada. But after that, she dissapears. I cannot find her on the 1911 census and I really need to know what happened to this woman.

My great uncle is getting old, and this family mystery is keeping him from having closure. (Ida is his grandmother).

Please! Please please! Help me find Ida!

Ketrina

Hi Ian,

Interestingly without seeing your message, I decided last night (my time) that it was more likely that Harriet FITCH was the daughter of Isaac and Maria than Hill/Hall FITCH for the same reasons as you have outlined in your email to Rowena. My tree has been amended accordingly.

I will send you an email tonight. Off to work now.

Regards,

Esther

Thanks for your reply.

I've sent you my email address via the Ancestry contact system. If you email me, I can send you a full ancestry report of the Gale family as I have it at the moment.

I note that Rowena Summers (Hi Rowena) has made contact. As it contains some images which won't transmit via this medium, I've copied this note to her email address so she can forward you a copy.

==============================

Harriet Fitch - Alternative Identification

Like you I have only been able to find George Burcher Gale and Frederick Gale as children of William Gale and Rebecca Burcher and I haven't found where William or Rebecca came from.

I didn't have much about Harriett Fitch other than her name but I've had another look.

Frederick Gale married Harriett Fitch on 27 Nov 1825 in the Parish of St James, Westminster, London, England.

Harriet MAY be the illegitimate daughter of Hall Fitch and Esther Northeast. There are two baptism transcripts on IGI:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/individual_record...
HARRIET NORTHEAST OR FITCH
Christening: 29 SEP 1806 Saint John, Hackney, London, England
Father: HALL FITCH
Mother: ESTHER NORTHEAST

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/individual_record...
Harriet Fitch
Christening: 29 SEP 1806 Hackney, London, England
Father: Hall Fitch
Mother: Esther Northeast

There's also an image of the Parish Register on Ancestry which gives the birth date as August 17th 1806:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?htx=View&r=5538&d...

HOWEVER, the census records in 1851, 1871 and 1881 give Harriet's birthplace as either Brampton or Fulham in Middlesex (i.e. London). Harriet the daughter of Hall Fitch was born in Hackney which is in East London. It would be highly unusual for a child born in West London (Fulham) to be baptised in the much poorer East London. There's another Harriett Fitch who is a better fit. She was born on 14 October 1806 and baptised on 3 February 1807 at St George, Hanover Square, the daughter of Isaac and Maria Fitch:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/browse/view.aspx?dbid=1624&...

I believe this is the right Harriet. St George Hanover Square is much closer to Fulham than Hackney and there's an area known locally as Brompton, between Brompton Road and Fulham Road, just to the West of Chelsea on the Eastern edge of Fulham.

Harriet's mother was Maria Maris. Isaac married Maria on 3 July 1806 at St George Hanover Square, London. If I am reading the difficult handwriting correctly, the marriage was conducted by F Nicholas, Curate, and witnessed by Charles Cranwell and Sarah Shilton.
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/browse/view.aspx?dbid=1623&...

Harriet probably had a brother:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/individual_record...
CHARLES FITCH
Birth: 30 APR 1811
Christening: 26 MAY 1811 Saint Mary-St Marylebone Road, Saint Marylebone, London, England
Father: ISAAC FITCH
Mother: MARIA

Apart from their wedding, I haven't been able to discover anything about Isaac and Maria Fitch.

Regards,
Ian
Hi,

I did not realise Thomas had a first wife so thanks for that info on its own. My daughter and I are working together on our family tree (we are both EJ BIRCHALL). BIRCHALL is my married name, my maiden name is GALE. I am descended from Frederick's son Augustus who came to Australia in 1853 aged 19; my grandfather is Francis James Stevens GALE; and my late father is Frank's only child Robert Joseph GALE.

Dad did a lot of research into our family tree including Augustus and his descendants (he and his wife Jessie nee Wilson had 9 children). So we are now trying to add to that and are making slow progress, particularly with regard to William GALE and his wife Rebeccca nee BURCHER and whether they had other children besides Frederick and George Burcher. Also having some trouble with Frederick's wife (Harriett FITCH) and her ancestors. Have you been more successful?

Regards,

Esther for EJ Birchall
Many thanks for your post. As you guessed, I have indeed found out more information about Thomas Freen Gale.

My daughter's partner is descended from Thomas via his first wife, Ellen Jane (nee Pilgrim). Thomas and Ellen had at least four (possibly five) children in London before he went to Australia in 1868/69. He may have abandoned his wife and/or Ellen may have thought he had died because she remarried five years later, and had four more children.

I have quite a lot of Frederick Gale's descendants but no-one called Birchall. What is your famimly line?

Kind regards,
Ian

I am descended from George Burcher Gale's brother Frederick, who was a waterman on the Thames. I have been discovering lots of interesting material on George and his family. It is proving a little more difficult to discover George and Frederick's parents and their ancestors. I have discovered that William Gale and Rebecca Burcher were married by Licence in Walcot, Somerset on 31 Aug 1797.

Thomas Freen (or Friend) Gale lived in Parkside South Australia and died at his home of an aneurism of the aorta. See http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article43804841. His wife was Lavinia Balfort and they had one child a daughter named Lily Lavinia Louisa Gale. He was also an aeronaut/balloonist like his parents George and Matilda. See his entry in Notable South Australians; Or, Colonists, Past and Present available at http://www.archive.org/stream/notablesouthaus01loyagoog/nota.... txt

But perhaps you have found out more since your post in Dec 2009? Still happy to share info. Regards, EJ Birchall (Melbourne, Australia)

Thanks for passing on this information. I was certain there'd be others who have, in the past, or are currently researching for Williams parents.

William also could have possiblly been the male child under the age of 10 that was included in the 1820 census report for John D. Gale.

Need to see what more can be learned about James and John.

Do you know of any other research being done at this time?

Williams death was recorded in the Phelps, NE records as January 1891. He died at age 77 and burial was in York, NE.
So now that data is "official".

Am also trying to see if a record of birth exists for William in NC . . . Possibly would include the names of mother and father!!

Thank you for sharing your information. If I should discover anything new, I'll let you know.

Leslie

There is a Will from John Gale dated 2 Oct. 1733. He lived in Old Currituck, North Carolina, which is along or near the Outer Banks. He mentions the following children: James, Mary, Catherine, Elizabeth, and John Gale (who was then living in Kent County, Md.) I suspect that the daughters married men with differenr surnames, and that John remained in Md. Perhaps James Gale was the ancestor of William?
Good luck,
Everett Gale

Am currently researching a Gale family that includes William Gale who was born in 1814 in NC. Because I've been unable to find Williams parents I checked the 1820 census to see how many Gale's lived in that state in the early 1800's. Unfortunately, the census gives only the name of the HOH and lists how many members live in the household. I found only ONE Gale, John D., living in Bertie Co., NC. The household included 5 or 7 residents which included John, of course.

If you have any data related to Gale's from NC I'd very much appreciate hearing from you!!!

Leslie (AZ)

Pam, are you a relative? Anson would have been my great grandfather's brother on my father's side. I know he was married to Bridget Nellie Maloney and had Lucille (1898-1983), Harrold (1902-1951)and Margaret (1904-1977) Gale. My grandfather (Frank Roy Gale) said that the Gale family were early immigants from England before the Revolution, settled in Princess Ann Co., VA, below Norfolk. That is probably why William spent his last years in that area rather than IL. William was wounded in Chapultepec in the Mexican War with Gen. Winfield Scott (from Dinwiddie Co., VA), according to a note from my grandfather in 1944. I live in Gainesville, VA. Any information you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Marge McAuliffe (703) 743-2473

Pam, I have found nothing on William Henry Gale's parents except that the 1900 US Fed. Census from Cheaspeake, Elizabeth City, Virginia (the U.S. Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers) says his Father's birthplace is Illinois and his Mother's birthplace is England. He was born in Illinois July 1829; lived in Naples, Scott, IL; served in both the Mexican War (enlisted as Private, June 21, 1847, Company "D," Second Regiment of Illinois Foot Volunteers, discharged 20 Jul 1848) and the Civil War (2nd Lieut at enlistment on 14 Aug 1861, Full Quartermaster, Captain on 27 Nov 1862, and mustered out on 15 Aug 1864)

I know that there were Gales in Warwick, and also around the Townshend Vermont area. I have been doing a lot of searching for Gales in and around Townshend, and recently found my Great Grandfather's burial place in Townshend. My GGrandfather was Porter Gale. William Henry Gale, living in Naples, Scott, IL, with wife Elizabeth and two sons Charles William Gale (age 14) and Anson Henry Gale (age 11) in 1880 US Census. Charles is my great grandfather on my father's side. I have not been able to identify who William's father or mother are. She was apparently born in England.
I am so glad to hear from you. Your research does match up with mine, however your research is far more complete. I would love to have a copy of any Obit.s you have. I have compiled a large 3 ring note book of information of the Cemetery were Francis is buried. For sure it is abandoned and many stones are missing.
Later to day i will get in to my note book and see what I have.
I do recall that the wife of Francis was cheated out of any money for the homestead they had in Colfax co. Ne. I am unhappy that the stone for Francis had no birth or death dates on it. This I am typeing by memory from some years ago. Please email me at Frontier.Pioneers@gmail.com
Dove

I still have a lot of writing and requests for documentation to get in.

Right now, however, it seems that the story is this: Isaac Gale, wife and family, including son, Francis Gale, settled in Columbia County, Wisconsin between 1850 and 1860. On 18 July, 1861, Francis Gale joined the Union Army. Co. D, 8th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers. He was wounded, survived and received a disability discharge on 2 February 1863. He married Sarah Flanagan on January 2, 1870. They appear as a newly married couple on that year's census.

They then leave Wisconsin and are next found in Nebraska.
By 1880, Sarah A. Gale is a widow with three small children:
Minnie, Flora, and Charles.

Flora Gale is Florence Gale, my great-grandmother.

We have lost the 1890 census so must now jump two decades to 1900. I have yet to find Sarah or Minnie on census. However, Charles Gale is living in San Jose, CA with his new wife, Effie and daughter Rita. My grandmother is living, also near San Jose, CA with her new husband James Neil Davison.

I have found three real estate transactions in the San Jose Evening News that lead me to believe that Sarah Gale was also living in or near San Jose, California. The sales of property are in 1898, 1900 and 1909----the latter transaction being the sale of a lot to my great grandmother for ten dollars.

Sarah Gale is living near Seattle, Washington per the 1910 census. An obituary appeared in the San Jose Evening News that indicates she passed away in Seattle, Washington on Sept. 14, 1917, leaving three living survivors--- Mrs. A H McKinney of Seattle (whom I believe is Minnie), Mrs. Neil J. Davison of San Jose (my great grandmother) and a Mr. C E Gale of Colma, Ca (Charles Gale). The death is recorded in the Washington State Death Index.

The Charles Gale family is on census from 1900 through 1930. He was a RR engineer. The Davison family is on census from 1900-1930, also. I was fortunate enough to know both my great-grandparents.

My questions to you are............where is the small cemetery located where you found the Francis Gale grave site ? and have photographs of the grave site been made?

Every best to you,

Jan Kelley

Not sure if the DOB matches up but I will look into it. I have Lucy Gale Stockwell Hixon born aprox. 15 Feb 1798 in either Windham or Windsor, Vermont. I believe that Jonathan Gale and Lucy Temple's children were born in the 1770's...It would make more sense that Lucy Gale (1798) was the daughter of Jacob or Isaac Gale....

If this is correct, then Lucy is the daughter of Jonathan and Lucy Temple Gale and not the daughter of Jacob Gale...what do you think Cousin Neeners???

Lucy Gale......a puzzle almost solved!!! HELP!!!

After much diligence and a lot of foot work, we have finally located Lucy Gale Stockwell. After her husband's ( John Stockwell Jr.) death on Maynard's Hill in NY, Lucy remarried a man named Josiah Hixon(Hickson, Hixson). She and her husband can be found on the 1850 Fed. Census for NY living with Josiah and her youngest daughter by John Stockwell Jr., living in Hartford, Washington, NY. She appears again in the 1860 Fed. Census with Josiah. We have her obit that explains that after a long and painful illness, Lucy succumbed on 15/8/1870 at the age of 72 yrs, 6 months. This establishes her birthdate as March of 1798. We believe she is the daughter of Jacob Gale, son of Jonathan Gale and Lucy Temple, born in Vermont. She is definitely NOT the daughter of Abigail Rice and Abraham Gale as listed in the wonderful, but sometimes inaccurate ( come on give her a break...this is hard work....we're not always right, so use this book as a guide, not a bible!) Kennedy book of genealogy on the Stockwell Family. John Stockwell Jr. is buried with his mother, sister and brother in Sennett cemetery. Lucy is not with him. Can anyone give us some help with this. We NEED to prove her relationship to Jacob, Jonathan and Lucy/Temple Gale! We would love to find her grave too! Thanks to all!
