According to family lore, Elza Gallagher was three or four generations direct ancestor of Mary Charlene Gallagher (my grandmother, dob June 23, 1911)(aka Charlene Worthington). Elza Gallagher fought and died in the Civil War at the Battle of Stones River in Tennessee. Some of his sons (names unknown) also served with him. Both Elza and Mary Charlene Gallagher were from Barnesville, Ohio.

Andrew J. Gallagher - Bell, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania

I am seeking any information on my great-grandfather, Andrew J. Gallagher. He was born Sept 27, 1830, in Pennsylvania. Married Sarah Ann Bowman. Children were: Mary Adda, Elizabeth Nancy (Kuhns), Margaret Catherine, Nettie (Magreary), Carrie (Kaney), William Franklin, Charles J., and my grandfather, James Howard. The parentheses after the children's names are their married names.

Andrew died in May 1904. Sarah died in January 1910 from a fall down the cellar stairs at her sister's home. They are both buried at the old St. James Lutheran Church cemetery in Bell Township.

I am trying to research the family back to Ireland, but have reached a dead end with Andrew. I can't find any information on him prior to March 1865, when he joined the 103rd Pennsylvania. Any information that anybody might have about him would really be welcome.

My grandfather was William Gallagher and I remember hearing about County Cork as a youngster. I have little information,he was married to Martha Adaline Little of FAirmont, WV. I believe they came to this country through Massachusetts. I think his father's name was James Gallagher. I hope I can help you or you can help me.

Needing identification of a Gallagher

I recently did a walk-through of Saint Francis Cemetery near Belmond Iowa. One of the markers is Father Gallagher, 13 Aug 1813 to 16 Jun, 1909

A quick search hasn't lead to an easy identification. Does anyone know who this might be?

Mary Gallagher McAdoo on the 1901 Rosskirk, Co. Donegal, Ireland Census

Looking for any information about Mary Gallagher McAdoo, wife of Samuel and sister to my grandfather Thomas Gallagher (he came to the US from Co. Donegal). I don't know what her birthdate would be, but Thomas' was 16 Nov 1877 (and he died 13 Nov 1941 in Camden Co., NJ). So Mary would be within a few years of 1877.
Piecing together clues from old letters, I was able to find her on the 1901 Rosskirk, Co. Donegal Census with her husband Sam and their children, Fanny, Annie, & Samuel.
There's mention of a relation with a Daniel Gallagher and a connection to the Campbell family (who all live near these McAdoos & Gallaghers).
I don't think any of these people emigrated to the US (just Thomas who settled in the Philadelphia area).
I know this is pretty skimpy info, but I'm throwing it out there to see it Mary & Sam McAdoo sounds familiar to anyone.

Catherine O' Donnell born March 1830 in Ireland arrived in America in 1860. I do not know any information on where she arrived or who she married. She did have a daughter by the name of Nellie O'Donnell born March 1866 in Iowa and Nellie later married John Gallagher. Any information on Catherine would be greatly appreciated to continue my journey across the pond.

Hi

In a few days it should get a little easier. The 1940 Census will be released and you should be able to fine your parents and grandparents.
From there you can work backwards. It will also show if the "e" was long standing spelling or a recent "mistake"

Hi, I am really not sure I know as far back as my great grandfather but I haven't gotten any further than that. I am really just getting started. I just know there are no other people in the area we live in with the last name Gallegher the way we spell it and there are only a few with it spelled any other way. This is really interesting and alot of work!! LOL I really dont have a lot to go on we dont have many family members left to talk to.

Hi,

There are at least 23 different spellings of the Gallagher surname.

We spell it with two “g’s” and pronounce it Gal la Ger. Most of my ancestors spelled it with one “g” and pronounced it Gul la her, I think.

How long has your family spelled with an E and not an A?
Which spelling shows up in the Census records?

I know this is an old post, so I'm not sure if your still working on Peter Buchard Gallagher...

He would be my 3rd Great grandfather... Just a few days ago, I came across his Obit from the Sedalia Daily Democrat, 23 Jan 1874... It states he died on 17 Jan 1874 in Pleasant Hill, MO at the age of 64... His 2nd wife, Nancy Hanes is my 3 Great Grandmother and their daughter Sarah Jane (Gallagher) Halbert is my 2nd Great Grandmother...

If you do find something in the UK, don't be afraid to use the GRO, they are very fast and prices reasonable. I received and irish BC from them and some birth records from England. Nice set up.

Order the microfilm as family search often transcribes incorrectly. You will be able to view Mary's second marriage and try to make out the town in Ireland where she was born. Never overlook all records of all persons in the family, civil and church, marriage, baps, land, war, deaths, wills, etc. Each person in the family will have little clues and when you put them all together, you will find your answers.

I have found Mary Ann Gallagher Emery buried in Traverse City, Michigan because she lived with my Grandmother Daisy Ann Drake her daughter for awhile. So did Anna but can't find her grave or her husbands grave either. I was able to get Anna's death cert, no real info. Just said her father was James Carr and mother Anna Duffee, not what town they were from just unknown was put down for James Carr and Anna Duffee.

Read on, and also order those microfilms listed, you should be able to find a family history center near you. Go to familysearch.org to find a center near you. Also, looks like I have found another person searching the same family? Try and contact her, it might be an old post and old email, but give it a try.

I want to thank you for all you have done. It does give me some ideas. I have the death cert on Anna Gallagher, no parents but didn't know where her husband died so haven't been able to retrieve that yet. That is why it is so hard for me to figure out who really was born in what town. Mary married a Charles Emery, but on her death cert and marriage cert it only lists that she was born in Ireland, gives no town. So, the one you listed here could very well be Cashel. How did you find her with a town listed ??? Boy, you really have done some work on this and I really appreciate it. I will try to look up the kids going backward like you said. William is a new name to me I don't remember him right now but I am going to look him up.This is so exciting for me :)))

I am looking for info on my great great grandmother who came from Ireland to Canada and then into Michigan. Her name was Anna Kerr Gallagher, she was born in Ryo or Nye Scotland in 1820, her parents were James Carr/Kerr and Anna Duffee. She married a James Gallagher from Ireland. Some of the children were, Daniel, John, Mary Ann and there were more but don't know their names. They all came from Canada with her. Don't know what happened to her husband James, nor do I have any info on him but would love some. Mary Ann was born March 10, 1862 in Ireland so all the kids must have been born there too. I would appreciate any help in finding where in Canada they were and where in Ireland, Scotland they came from. Search for Mary's first marriage to Embury, Search for Mary and her first husband in the Census for alternate spelling of his last name. If you can find her first marriage, you might be able to get an alternate spelling of where she was born and make some sense of it.

things to try:
Get Daniels birth certificate from Scotland or their marriage certificate, very good records there and you may be able to figure out which Church and Church records sometimes hold surprises.

Estimate when they left Scotland and search the vessel records

Look for the children born in Ireland's births in familysearch

find the vessel passenger list that they came to Canada

Look for James or Anna's death certificate, it might list where they were born.

Thank you for answering. Anna Gallaghers last name was either Kerr or Carr. On her dtrs death cert it is Kerr but was told it was also Carr. Anna and James Gallagher left Ireland with their kids and went to Canada in 1870. From Canada they came to Michigan. In the 1871 Census of Canada James and Ann were listed with Hugh,John and Daniel, and Mary. That was in Tilsbury East,Ontario. Their son Daniel was born in Scotland but the rest of the kids in Ireland. Still looking for what town in Donegal, it might even be the town of Donegal. This is the problem I can't seem to go back to Ireland or Scotland to find them because the name is so common there.

I have one unusual occurrence in my extended family. My Gallaghers were from Ballynoulty (Boleynanoultagh) in the parish of Kildorrery, Cork. One branch, at various times, used the name Galway. I am not sure why because that is a surname in itself. One line of this family moved across the border to Kilflyn civil parish in Limerick and very briefly some of those Gallaghers used the name Galway. (I subscribe to the Gallagher list).

Donegal is a large county and the Gallaghers are numerous. Their are several James Gallaghers in my database, but none married to a Kerr. Did they marry in the US and if they did, does his marriage show more where he was from of his parent's names?

My Great Great Grandfather was James Gallagher from Donegal, Ireland. He was born around 1820 and married an Anna Kerr from Ary,Scotland. They had sons, Hugh,Daniel and Mary Ann. Daniel married a Jane Grant in Tilsbury, Canada. Then James and Anna with 2 or 3 of their kids moved to Michigan. I am looking for any info on James and Anna Kerr. Don't know if you can help but if your Gallagher and my Gallagher are from Donegal then I would think they are related somehow. I know they were in Michigan in the 1880's.
I would appreciate any help if you can. Thank you so much.
