Not sure about the spelling of the names, but I have the death record of Madro Gallegos. He was shot by his son-in-law, Luis Madril, the first husband of Beatrice. Luis spent most of his life in the state pen in Colorado. My husband and I were able to go there and obtained photos of Luis, so I now know what he looks like. I also have information on the shooting from the newspaper. I just do not know what happened to Madro's wife. I know she was still in Del Norte in the 1920 census. If I can locate the material, I would be happy to send it to you if you are interested. And yes, we are very much related. Juvanne Martin, CG
Nampa, ID
208-461-8866

Obituary: Emilio J. Gallegos

Emilio Juan Gallegos Passed away on July 19, 2011 at his home in El Cerrito after a two-year battle with throat cancer. He was 79. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Gina, of 48 years. In addition, he is survived by his four children, Juan, Lisa, Maria and Alan' and seven adored grandchildren, Elena, Malia, Elias, Clara, Franklin, Adela and Mateo with one additional grandson on the way. Emilio was the son of Modesto Crescencio Gallegos and Adela Epimenia Espinosa Gallegos now both deceased. He is survived by five siblings, Alvaro, Yolanda, Modesto, Leonel and Carlos and all of their beautiful children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his oldest brother, Jose', who died at age 8. Emilio was born June 24, 1932 in the town of Del Norte, Colorado on the western edge of the San Luis Valley. He shared many adventures with his family on their ranch flanked by the Rio Grande. The family then moved to the ancient Spanish colony of Santa Cruz de la Can'ada in Northern New Mexico. This is where Emilio and Gina took their four children every summer to spend many weeks with his large extended family and to eat his favorite food including New Mexico chili and sopaipillas. Emilio cherished his Hispanic roots and regularly brought his family and friends together to play the guitar and sing Spanish folk songs with his beautiful tenor voice, a talent that helped put food on the table while he was in college. He received his PhD in physical chemistry at Kansas State University in 1960. Upon graduation, Emilio accepted a position at the Chevron Research Corporation in Richmond, California as a Senior Research Scientist where he was employed until his retirement in 1992. In addition to his love of music, he enjoyed painting, photography and carpentry. He built the second story to his house in El Cerrito and made furniture for his wife, children and grandchildren. Emilio was a warm and loving inspiration. His strong handshakes, hugs and kisses, his teasing demeanor, his stories and his singing will be dearly missed. The funeral service will be held at St. John's Catholic Church in El Cerrito on July 26th at 10:30 a.m. where he and his family have been parishioners for 44 years. His final resting place will be in Santa Cruz, New Mexico near the burial site of his mother and father. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Souper Center Program run by the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program (http://www.gripcommunity.org/support/index.html).
Published in San Francisco Chronicle on July 24, 2011
It is nice to see all of this GALLEGOS traffic going on. Unfortunately for me, all of my near Gallegos [other than my dad - Leopoldo Luis Gallegos - are from the Las Vegas group.] I was born Miguel Luis Gallegos. I go by my religious name now, and the first name of Micah. I have family still in Vegas, and others in the La Cuesta area. I can take my line back to the 1400s but am stopped there. My grandfather was Perfecto Gallegos and my grandma was Eloisa Rivera. Again, I am glad to see all of you searching. Keep at it.
Micah

My niece Debbie (sister Patsy's daughter) lived in Chama a long time and was married to Gerald Blea, who I think was an engineer on the train. They just got divorced, and Debbie lives in Albuquerque now with one son in college. The other Zack I think is working in Chama on the train as a docent. My husband and I visited with Nacho and his wife when we went to Heron Lake a few years ago to camp. They didn't bring out any pictures, but I'd love to have one of Josephine.
I couldn't get the attachment to go through, but here's the first part of my aunt Betty's paper:
"Francisco was born in Chama which is in Rio Arriba County.
His Spanish American parents were Catholics. They were considered well thought of in this community. His father owned many sheep and hired two sheep herders to care for them. The sheep were kept out on winter and summer range on the Brazos Mountains. The sheep camp was moved three times a year. Once in a while Francisco would go
with the peons that moved camp and would take supplies to the sheepherders. He would then report back to his father as to how things were going in camp and the number and condition of the sheep.
A smallpox epidemic spread through this community of about thirty families wiping out many of its residents. All five of Francisco's brothers and four of his sisters succumbed to the disease. Francisco, the oldest child and Josephine the youngest, lived through this scourge.
Their faces were badly pitted from the scars of the disease.
Francisco had very little schooling as his father did not believe that an education was necessary. He was a very shrewd man and taught his son to be the same.
Francisco married Isabella Anzures, an orphan who was raised along with two other homeless girls by an elderly Spanish couple who had no children of their own. This elderly couple were looked upon as guardians of this community and were always helping any one in need." There is much more I can send by email if you'll send your email address. Mine is vegassally@hotmail.com. I am Sally Gonzalez, formerly Sally Starkovich, Rebecca's daughter.
This is so exciting. You won't believe this but my husband I use to travel to El Paso four times a year. We often would stop at Elephant Butte. We also traveled to Roswell; Carlsbad; Las Cruces and Soccoro. My Aunt moved from California to Arrey. We managed to visit her home there.
Lupe Bustamante was her amd my father's aunt on their mother's side. My dad's cousin Mary Helen has been in contact with us. I try to be considerate of my relatives. For some the memories are bittersweet.
Before I was born my family would visit the Bustamantes in Gallup. After Lupe passed away I guess our families didn't keep in touch. I have pictures of Lupe and her family. I will try to post them soon.
I will also try the E-Mail.
Well there is so much info.

Wow, there's so much I'd like to discuss with you. My 2 sons live in Albuq. Joe and Don Lifke. My folks moved there in 1951 and had 8 kids (I think I said 6 before). I lived there till 1994 when I moved to Las Vegas NV for my job with DOE. Then we (my second husband and I) moved to Elephant Butte in 2000. 2 of my sisters (Margaret and Sue) live in NV, Tom S. lives in Albuq., Patsy Theiler lives in Los Lunas, Betsy Krykowski lives in Albuq. but is currently trying to move to LA, Calif. Brother Ted died 10 yrs. ago of cancer. Cousins Jeffrey and Manuel Bigley both live in Albuq. but because of past family issues we have no contact with them. Maria Lukes is Lupe Bustamante's daughter and lives in Albuq. We kind of keep in touch and exchange stories, data, etc. Are we allowed to give email addresses so we can communicate directly? I don't know if you can read the attachment--remember Betty was biased on certain issues. She wrote the paper for a college class. Don't think I can attach--email me at above name @hotmail.com

Thank you so much. Would appreciate a copy of the letter. I did go to Rosario Cemetary to find Nora's and Josephines markers. Of course the curiator of the day failed to notate their gravesites. I am very upset about it because I know for a fact that both burials were well paid for. It is sad that Rosario offers no excuse or apology. There is an area where they may have been intured and the cemetary welcomes us to place a plaque or headstone. Before we do that I want to make sure we find to the absolute area they maybe.
Many thanks
R.Fletcher
I haven't used this website much and am not too familiar with how it works. My aunt Elizabeth (Betty) Bigley Schmaltz wrote a long paper in 1957 about the Gallegos family history. Josephine (Gallegos) (Lundgren) Ortega was my grandmother Matilda's mother. I can attach a copy if anyone is interested. Josephine was born in Abiquiu NM and died in Santa Fe NM. She was buried in Rosario cemetery. I have many dates also.

My Great Grandfather Martin Gallegos was born in San Miguel del Vado (Ribera), NM as was his older brother my Great Tio Juan Ponciano Gallegos. They migrated to Sapello (my great grandfather was baptized in Sapello), then they made it to Watrous. In Watrous, he married Dolores Valdes and had 8 children, 4 lived. My Tia Carlota b. 1869 m Encinias and established family in Wagon Mound, My Tia Epifania b. 1871 m. Trujillo, and has disappeared after 1920 with her children and husband, Ignacita b. 1873 m. Menzor and established family in Wagon Mound, and my Grandpo Max b. 1877 who established Family in Watrous - we are still there. Do any of they surface or connect to your records?

Epifania Gallegos b. 1871 m. Jose Natividad Trujillo

Epifania Gallegos was born in Tiptonville/San Ysidro, Mora County, New Mexico. She is known to have at least 4 daughters, Romanita, Lucinda, Martina and Genoiveva and son Patricio Trujillo. No record traces keeps them in Mora County, and it appears that the family may have moved to Otero County, Colorado (La Junta area) after 1920. Any clues are welcomed from an genealogists out there, or tied to this Gallegos.

Gallegos in Sugarite/ Raton, NM

Hi,

Starting to do some research and build a family tree and have run into a road block. I am looking for information on my great grandparents, Frank Gallegos (b. Jun 21 1893 in Folsom, NM) and Juanita (Montoya) Gallegos (b. Jan 28, 1898 in New Mexico). They lived in or near Sugarite with their son Louis Gallegos (b. 1915) until sometime in the 1920's when they moved to California. I cannot find solid information on Frank's parents or other family members. I do know that they had family (I believe Gallegos family) in Walsenburg, CO that they used to visit often. Any further insight into these relatives would be very much appreciated. Thank you!!
