Thank you for your response. My Philip wasn't born until 1872 so not the same one. Saying that he does have a sister called Anne. I know in those days they tended to name their children after their aunts and uncles so it is possible that they are related. I think one way or another all the Gallens from that area are related. My Philip was born in Meenliskabawn, Donegal.

Regards

I'll follow this with interest, Theresa.

My gg grandfather was Daniel Gallen, b. January 1838, died 20 Dec 1910 in San Francisco, CA. His wife was Hannah McHugh, born in 1838 in Fermonamongan Parish, Co. Tyrone, but their children were all born in Drumnagalliagh, Drumkeeran Parish, Co. Fermanagh.

Dan's father and mother were Owen Gallen and Annie Calla(g)han. I don't know whether they came to the USA, Dan and Hannah brought their children here in 1888, except for Annie, my great grandmother, who arrived in 1882 at the invitation of her uncle, William Calla(g)han. Note to self: research William Callaghan's family to see whether there is an obituary that mentions birthplace.

Thanks for starting something :-)

Pat.
in Maine

Hi Cronan:
I have recently finished writing a book about life in Donaghmore Parish, Co. Donegal, and I am now beginning the process of trying to get it published. My efforts are currently on the back burner mostly because I am lazy and involved with several other activities at the present. Unlike your book, this is fictional and tells the story of three generations of a rural Irish family who lived near Ballybofey in Donegal from 1780 to 1850. It is about the everyday lives of these families from the end of the penal laws, through the great famine, and their emigration to America. If I ever get it published, it'll probably be called "Donegal Generations."

If you give me your email address, I'll send you mine.

Good hearing from you....Tom Gallen

Hi: My Gallen ancestors were from the parish but emigrated to America just after the great famine. My great-great-grandparents were listed in the parish register at the Crossroads chapel in the 1840s, but no townland was written at that time. So...I don't know where they lived. (I think the Gallen "nicknames" came about after the famine.
A lot of families from Donaghmore emigrated to my hometown with my ancestors to work in a textile mill owned by Charles Kelly from Ardnagannah. The names on gravestones in Kellyville, PA are much the same as at the Cross, including a lot of Scanlons.

I am looking for information on my great grandfather who was John Gallen (1870-1949) from Meenreagh. He married Elizabeth Doherty at St. Patrick's in Killygordon. John's fathers name was Patrick Gallen, mother was Annie Meehan,(got this from the marriage cert). I know that John is buried in St. Mary's at Sessioghoneill. I have had trouble finding him on the census as there are quite a few John Gallens around the same age as him. If anyone interested in finding Gallen graves, I have photographed all the graves I could find at St. Patrick's and St. Mary's. I have been trying to find Patrick's grave but as there are a few Patrick and Annie's have been unable to do so yet.

John and Elizabeth had four daughters of which I believe one of them moved to America. Would love to make contact. I also understand that some of John's brothers/sisters may have emigrated as well. Again, would love to make contact.

If any of the above info sounds familiar to anyone, please get in contact. Any help would be much appreciated.
Caroline
Hello John, The post you responded to was written by my cousin, Ann, who is offline at the moment. We are still researching this family. Our great grandparents, John & Margaret Marron Gallen, met and married in New Zealand and then returned to Ireland in the late 1800s. Margaret died in 1891, John died in 1906.
Their children, all born in New Zealand, are:
Patrick (b. 1872),
James (b. 1873),
Mary Ann Agnes (b. 1875),
Cecilia (b. 1879 d. 1942)--my grandmother,
John (b. 1881, died 1927),
Edward (b. 1886)

I've recently connected with another cousin of this family who lives in Dublin. I'll let her know about your post.
Patricia
Champaign, IL USA

My Mum and Dad live in Galway now and I'm in Dublin.

I just randomly was checking what the web holds about me and found your query.

I remember a Mr Gallen QC who came over to my Mum and Dad from New Zealand researching the Gallen name in general and my Dad picked up a lot of info from him as did he from dad.

Anyway, my Mum and Dad are away on holidays for a couple of weeks so I'll get back to you when I've had a chance to talk to them.

You mention that your Gr Grandfather John Gallen opened a pub in Donegal. Well, I may have one of the original glazed pottery bottles (well, not me, my sister has it :)) and its got 'John Gallen Beers' written on it, or something to that effect.

Anyway, if you want more info, reply to this and I'll get back as soon as I know more,

Cheers
John

They married into the Boyle and Hegney families. One of the children were baptised in the church at Doneyloop which was the only RC church in that area around 1857.

But my grandfather was born in Castelló, in Valencian country( 300 years ago Castelló was inside Catalonia State). My grandfather had 11 brothers all in Castelló, in a little town called Onda. All my family speak in catalan language and we have as second language spanish. But the most important is: my siter found out probably our origins in Ireland. Seems my family traveled to Switzerland 300 years ago, and then they arrived finally in Catalonia. My e-mail is guillemg16@gmail.com

Yours faithfuly.

Hi,

I think we may have a connection. As Joe Albert (my cousin)
posted in 1999 Eugene Owen Gallen was my grandfather. As I can piece together he was born in Donegal Ireland and came to Philadelphia shipping out of Glasgow. He married Margaret Barrett and they had three children as Joe mentioned Margaret, Irene and my father John. My grandmother passed away about 1911 or so and I understand that my grandfather remarried and had another family. My dad left Philadelphia for California as a young man so he didn't have too much information about grandpa's other family but my Aunts who stayed in Philadelphia the rest of their lives remembered their half siblings and I remember them mentioning a Phillip. Growing up they lived in the Kensington Port Richmond section of Philadelphia (which I understand is the same or close to the Fishtown Mentioned) and went to St. Anne's Church. Joe found that grandpa died in 1937? in Philadelphia. Perhaps some of the confusion was that grandpa married two women named Margaret, apparently a pretty popular name for Irish women those days!

Stay well cousins!

John Gallen

jfgallen@sbcglobal.net

I've found Jane & Ellen in the 1910, 1920 Census but don't believe that the brothers were involved.
I have a letter with some family history that I could scan for you if you are interested. It gives a lot of info for all of Michael Gallen's children.

Hello Maeve,
It is nice to meet you.

These messages are not private - they can be read by anyone who logs onto ancestry.com

Yes, I had an Aunt Marianne. She died, sadly, on Jan 31, 2009. Although she was my father's sister, she and I learned of each others existence for the first time in 2001 - a little late in life for each of us to be discovering such close relatives. It's a long story and I'll relate it to you privately if you'd like to send me your email address.

Aunt Marianne gave me a copy of a letter you wrote her in 2004 and I have been meaning to write to you. She talked frequently of Angus and wished she had had a chance to meet him.

My husband and I both have Irish ancestors and we've been to Ireland about 3 times. We love the country and the people and are always looking for an excuse to return. Who knows!

Anyway, my email is pjwenzel@illinois.edu . You should feel free to respond there so we can continue in private.

Again, it's wonderful to meet you.

Patricia

Dear Patricia,

Before I go any further I should introduce myself.....My name is Maeve Crean and my mother was Grania Gallen the younger of John Gallen's two daughters.

I was really astonished when I saw the message you had posted on the internet looking for information about John Gallen. I had been trying, without success I might add, to get access to birth or baptismal records in New Zealand for the Gallen Family so my son googled "John Gallen New Zealand" for me and saw your message. I have the dates of birth of all the Gallen children who were born in New Zealand as they are all recorded in an old Family Bible which was given to me by my uncle Angus Gallen - my mother's youngest brother - who died in April 2008.

Can you confirm with me that you have an Aunt living in Manorvile, New York because if so I can tell you that I have been in contact with her. I wrote to her for Christmas 2008 to let her know that Angus had died but did not get a reply. The last time I heard from her she told me that both she and her husband were not well so when I did not hear from her again I presumed that she must have died also.

I really don't know how private this message is and if you are the only person who can read my replies as I have never done this before. Can you let me know.

I will then be happy to let you have any information you need about the Gallen Family and I can tell you that there are no male Gallens to carry on the family name from John Gallen's family. He had two daughters and two sons but one of his sons died when he was 7 years old and Angus had no children.

I look forward to hearing from you again.

Maeve

Dublin, Ireland.

I am so pleased to hear from you! I'd like to confirm that John's, your great-grandfather, parents were Patrick and Mary which could confirm that John is the passenger on the list I found.

I would love to exchange more information with you if you'd like. My grandmother, whom I never met, was Cecelia. It's rather a long story so I won't go into details now.

Thank you for responding to my old post. I would love to go further back in this branch of my family tree.

Patricia
Champaign, IL

Hello Patricia,
I am replying to your query in 2007, which I have just seen, regarding the above. My great-grandfather was John Gallen born in Donegal in 1833. He was married in 1869 to Margaret Marren, who was born in 1851. I was always under the impression that they married before they went out to New Zealand but obviously that is not the case if he was on a passenger list in 1859. They had 6 children born in Christchurch, New Zealand - Patrick, James, Mary Ann, Cecelia, John (my grandfather) and Edward. The family retuned to Donegal in 1890. Margaret died in 1891 and John in 1906 and they are both buried in Clar Graveyard which is just outside Donegal town.

I am doing a bit of research on the maternal line of a friend with Philadelphia, PA roots. My friend's maternal grandfather was a Bernard Gallen, who was born in either 1895 or 1896 in PA (perhaps in Phildelphia). Bernard Gallen's wife was born Veronica Donahue, born in about 1900 in PA (Phildelphia?). Bernard and Veronice were married in about 1920, likely in Phildelphia, PA. looking for any information on this Bernard Gallen's parents and ancestry. The 1930 census shows that Veronica's parents were born in Northern Ireland. The 1930 census shows Bernard's father being born in "England" and mother born in PA.

Do you have names for the 14 Gallens born to Jamie and Eleanor. Where did you grandfather James end up? I have reached a dead end with my Charles Gallen b. 1868, Ireland and who settled in Philadelphia, PA and was married to Annie Quinn b. 1870 Ireland. I suspect that he was from Tyrone - but have nothing to prove it. I have been to the Catholic cemetery in Termonamongan (1999) and Gallen was on every other grave marker. (I was looking for a William Morris at the time).

Thanks for reading.

Denise

Patrick Gallen Donegal to Raymond Tce NSW AU

Hello Everybody
I am researching my mother's family name of Gallen.
Her father's name was William Joseph Gallen b.1886 Millers Forest NSW AU (married to Annie Comerford in 1914) d 1967 Balmain NSW. His father's name was Patrick Gallen b abt.1858 Donegal IRE emmigrated via Star of India (he was sponsored by James Moy @ Raymond Terrace) to AU (married to Annie O'Loughlin 1885) D 1927 Lismore NSW. Patrick's father's name was William Gallen m to Bridget (?)- this is where my dates all end.
I know that there seems to be a strong general Moy link to the Gallen family around Raymond Tce NSW - but can't definately tie them in.
There are already a lot of Gallens on here with Moy links - can anybody tie in my Gallens?
Any help would be appreciated.
