Thanks for the information. I've only been doing some research on my family for the last week. Its amazing how much you can learn in that amount of time. I'm a descendant of John & Nellie Gambrel. I found out he came from Wilkes Co., NC butI couldn't find any mention of any Gambrels in NC. A Wilkes Co. genealogy site had an article mentioning that the Gambill family were one of the early families to settle there. William Gambrel of Knox Co., KY was listed as William Gambill in the 1850 census, as was Gordon (Thomas Gordon?)so I thought it might be the same family. Harlan(d), Frank(lin) & Martin, as well as John and Elizabeth were listed under the Gambrel name. Gordon had an older man named William, aged 65 in his household according to the census. John Gambill, Jr. had a brother named William, so I thought it was possible that Gordon (Johns son, Williams brother) had his Uncle living with him. John Gambill Jr. was the only John Gambill I could find in Wilkes Co. at about the right time, but the year of birth was about 8 years off. It seems pretty obvious to me though that the Gambrel line is descended from the Gambill family of Wilkes Co.
