The Gardiners who reportedly came to Ontario during WWII went back to Ireland and bought farm land in County Cork.
They had stumbled upon Canadians whom they recognized as "cousins" originally from Ireland. This was an Anglo-Irish family with a long history in Ireland. Those Canadians had come over to Canada quite a while before WWII.

Gardiner is generally the more Irish spelling of the surname.

Thanks for the suggestion. The family may well have come from Ireland, but it would definitely have been well before WW11, as I do have documentation showing them as being in the US and Canada in the mid 1800's. Interestingly, my
g-grandfather, Godfrey Gardiner, did marry into an Irish family - the Doyles - and my grandfather, John Henry Gardner, married into an Irish family as well - the Coyles! They all settled in Ontario, Canada. But, Ireland just may be the place to move to, rather than trying to follow the thread from Canada. Unfortunately, my grandfather Gardner had 5 girls, no sons, so we can't even follow the DNA path here. Thanks again, Pat

KisimulDream2011,
> I suspect that if you could trace your line back to Ireland you would find yourself in County Cork in the area of Mallow. Do you have any thoughts about this?
> I talked with some Gardiner relations from that area who said that during WWII some of the men in their family went to Ontario to do necessary farm work since so many Canadian farmers were off at war. They discovered that there were distant cousins of theirs near the farms where they worked.
Now don't ask me where that was I really don't know.
> Sandy
> sandyeveritt@verizon.net
I've been researching my Mothers' family, the Gardiner family of Welland/Lincoln Ontario Canada, with very little luck. My grandfather was John Henry Gardner, born 1881 in Queenston, Ontario Canada and married to Mable Coyle. He was the son of Godfrey Gardner, born 1848 in Canada(?),who was married to Eliza Doyle. Johns' grandfather was (as best I can figure) John Godfrey Gardiner and was married to either Mary Pelon or Catherine Gibbons (both names have popped up on documents). The spelling of the surname changed with Godfrey Jr, who somehow dropped the "i". Can anyone shed any light on this family? Pat

This Singleton was the son of Singleton and Agnes (Maxwell) Gardiner. The marriage record I have for the parents is
Jan 19, 1858	Singleton Gardiner bachelor farmer living at Foy father was Robert, a farmer. Singleton married Agnes Maxwell,	single, who lived in Bleary, Co Down father Robert, a farmer.

I gather that Foy is near Portadown, Co Armagh. A Robert and Thomas Jr were listed at Foy in PRONI's freeholders listing along with a second Robert, dec'd 1821-1823ish.

The Maxwells live very close to the Co Armagh boundary and the marriage took place at Newmills Presbyterian Church, her church. Agnes was also known as Nancy. Her mother's name was not known, but she was raised by Sarah (Hamilton) Maxwell, apparently Robert's second wife.
A recent find of the surname of the wife of my New England ancestor, Edwin P. Wheeler, has resulted in healthy addition of genealogy on my website. Edwin's wife, Lydia, was the daughter of Henry and Mercy (Sweet) Reynolds. Henry's ancestry connects with the Rhode Island Hall and Gardiner Families, and Mercy Sweet connects with the Connecticut and Rhode Island families of Brown and Gardiner. Many other surnames are also contained in this newly found genealogy. The home page of this website is http://members.cox.net/melton, and the search facility to quickly look for a given name can be accessed at http://members.cox.net/melton/Melton-Sharp.htm#SEARCH.

I am trying to research the Gardiners in Ireland. I am looking for information on Mary Gardiner who was born in Ireland in either 1833 or 1834 to James Gardiner and Mary Egan. I think that Mary Gardiner was born in Cootehill but am not sure.

I know that Mary Egan died when Mary Gardiner was three years old. At some point James Gardiner and his daughter Mary Gardiner immigrated to Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

James Gardiner ran a store across from Chalmer's Church in Kingston, Ontario.

Mary Gardiner married David Mundell a Ship Carpenter.

Children of Mary Gardiner and David Mundell:
James Mundell
John Mundell
William Mundell
Emily Mundell
David Edward Mundell
Alma Edith Mundell
Samuel Mundell???
Robert Mundell???

After David Mundell died Mary Gardiner ran a boarding house for Queens University students.
You might have some luck searching in the church records for info on their marriage or marriage bond. Churches usually have family notes. In the church register of marriages, there may well be a record of "Bathsheba, daughter of...." It should also have ages of the couple. Often there will be notes of other churches they may have belonged to - which can also give family members.
They were married:
05 Jan 1795
Bozrahville Congregational Church, Bozrah, New London, Connecticut
Note: Most trees show this Daniel Melvin Woodworth as born in the early 1770s - making him too young to serve in the Revolutionary War.

I am under the impression that if a "legal" marriage took place with Margaret Grey it was before Stephen studied at university and became a clergyman.
I have also been told that Roman Catholic priests in the middle ages were sometimes married. Can anyone confirm that?
Clearly, Stephen knew that family, for when one of the sons was an adult he reportedly worked for him.

I have been wondering the same thing. I contacted some "Tudor" experts (can't even remember who or where but they were located in England) and they told me as far as they knew he was never married. And probably it was people trying to pump up their pedigrees.

I wonder if it was another Stephen Gardiner, there must have been more than one. According to everything I've read Stephen was married to a Margaret Grey whose grandfather was married to a Tudor (Tacina), so maybe we're related to the Tudors anyway. Or maybe it's another case of false information.

Debbie

A Gardiner Bible ??

I just came in possession of an old (1869) Bible that may have belonged to a Gardiner. It is:

"Hitchcock's New and Complete Analysis of the Holy Bible: (or the whole of the Old and New Testaments, arranged according to subjects in twenty seven books)".

It's in excellent condition -- there are a few discolored pages but no names or writing anywhere in the book.

The only identification is a four line clipping from a newspaper:

"Benjamin Gardiner died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Shoemaker, in Duanesburgh. Rev. W. G. Westervelt officiated at the funeral May 29th".

I would love to find a home for this Bible with a descendant of
Benjamin. I can be contacted directly at: gomac415@gmail.com.
We must remember that the church was a very political organization in a highly politically charged society. If he was the father of these 2 men it would have been politically dangerous to admit that. I am willing to believe that he was either the father or the uncle of these 2 men. Not even DNA can pinpoint it any better.
Very interesting. Thank you for all of that. I guess it is possible that Stephen Gardiner was married very young, and perhaps his wife died young and he went into the Church at that point. It still seems odd that there doesn't seem to be much written about that, when there is otherwise a fair amount about him in in the historical record. From your information, it looks like it may also be possible that the father of George Gardiner was his brother William or another brother.

The Gardiner that has started me searching for all of this is George Gardiner (1510-1548), who supposedly married Margaret Neville (1515-1559) and had sons Geoge and Germaine. I would love to find more about Margaret Neville and this marriage as well. The only Margaret Neville I have found record of that died in 1559 married Henry Manners, 2nd Earl of Rutland, so something doesn't seem to match up there.
