Sandy - We have a Cyrus Garfield who died about 1965 - actually he was murdered in a robbery. We do not know who his parents were. Cyrus was between 55 and 62 when he died. I believe he was from New York City, NY - Do you have a relative who has a son named Cyrus who would fit.

Don't know much more about Oliver but his wife Eliza was from a family with the last name of DuJardin and they changed it to Jordan when theyh immigrated to America...Eliza had a large family of siblings..

Having trouble finding when Oliver Garfield b@1811(married to Eliza Jordon/Jordan/Jordain) came from Canada... US census states he was born in Canada East.

Can not find any reference to a Garfield in Canada...

Wondering too, if there is a French way of spelling Garfield?

Not sure we're looking at the same line since you use abt 1880 for Irene's birth date. However, my uncle Louis Elmer STEENBERG (b. 1907/South Dakota; d. Jan 1994/Minnesota) had three wives. One was Irene GARFIELD. She had a sister Mildred GARFIELD that mrrd Louis' brother John Harold STEENBERG (b. 1909/South Dakota; d. Nov 1992/Minnesota). John had another wife Mary Ann RHINES. The other wives of Louis were Clara WILKINS and Marguerite DEVLEIGHER aka DAHLMAN. Hope this helps; please let me know if we're talking about the same people. Good luck with your search!

Garford to Garfield

Hello, I am currently researching my history and have been lucky enough to get right back to 1568.

My ancester is Robert Garfield of Bringhurst, Leicestershire, UK, Born 1691.

But the trace I have shows his father was Thomas Garford born 1661 in Bringhurst Leicestershire.

I am puzzled as to why the surname changed. Does any kind folk out there know? Help greatly appreciated.

George E. "Bud" Garfield, 83, of Erie,County, PA,
died Thursday, June 3, 2010 at St. Mary's Home at Asbury Ridge. He was born in Erie on June 9, 1926, the son of Nora Elizabeth Johnston Garfield and James Garfield. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marilyn Uht Garfield. Bud dropped out of Strong Vincent High School in the eleventh grade to enlist in the U.S. Army, earning the rank of sergeant in the Pacific during World War II. Following the war, he obtained his General Equivalency Diploma (GED), a bachelor's degree in education from Edinboro State College, and a master's degree in guidance from Penn State University. After graduation, he worked as an assistant field director for the American Red Cross at military installations in the U.S. and at Thule Air Base, Greenland. While there, he served as president of Toastmaster's International. A believer in the transformative power of education, Bud went on to become an educator and guidance counselor in the Millcreek School District and a leader in vocational and adult education at the Erie County Technical School. He forged successful partnerships with business and industry that in 1977 led to the founding the Regional Occupational Skill Center, a 43,000-square-foot adult skills training center that would provide thousands of skilled workers to manufacturing companies over the next three decades. In his retirement, he returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher at Erie's Collegiate Academy, where he worked nearly every day until the age of 80. Bud served on the board of directors at Villa Maria Academy; as a volunteer for the Erie Philharmonic, St. Andrew's Church, and the English as a Second Language Program at the Villa College. For many years he coached swimming at St. Andrew's and Our Lady's Christian Schools and was PIAA swimming official.
In addition to his wife, Marilyn,
Bud is survived by one daughter, Lisa Gensheimer and her husband Richard of North East, Pa.; two sons, James Garfield and his wife Regina of Laytonsville, Md., and Paul Garfield and his wife Crystal of Pass-a-Grille, Fla.; four grandchildren, Emily Miller Johnson and her husband Jamie, Jonathan Miller, Maura Garfield, and Evan Garfield; two step-grandchildren, Emily Gensheimer and Beth Gensheimer; and five great-grandchildren, Julian, Lily, Ella, Nico, and Meadow Johnson. He is also survived by one brother, Thomas Garfield and his wife Lois of Harborcreek; two sisters, Mary Garfield of Denver, Colo., and Barbara Makarowski and her husband Andrew of Erie; his brother-in-law Jerry Uht; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Garfield. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. The family will receive friends and family at St. Andrew's Church on Saturday, June 12, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial will be private. My Great Great Grandfather was from Bromsgrove, born abt 1831, John Garfield. He came to Wales and married. His son was David John Garfield and was my Great Grandfather, his daughter my Grannie, Sarah Catherine Garfield. My father was Terence Garfield Jones, and me, just David Jones.

This Henry Washington Garfield, born 15 Dec 1844 to Ira and Lucinda (Lund) Garfield, was married to Helen Van Pelt on 9 Sept 1868 in Winneshiek Co., Iowa. He died in Wadena Co., Minnesota on 10 Apr 1925. Thought you might be interested.

Robert born in Schanectady NY to Ralph and Ellen (Murphy) Garfield... according to the death certificate.
SS# was issued in Ohio.

More info, but still a hitting a wall.

No, it is not known if Robert had any brothers or sisters.

I am very glad to have your reply. I have an old family album with most photos being from Fitchburg area. There is at least one named photo of Pres. James Garfield and one of his wife. Because another man's photo is so similar, and after checking re my Fitchburg ancestors, I am guessing there my be a photo of James F D Garfield and also one of his ? wife. My great grandfather was vice pres of Garfield and Proctor Coal Co. at 92 State St, Boston. He then lived in Roxbury,Ma. Do YOU have any photos of JFDG I could try to match? I will gladly email you scanned copies if you tell me how to reach you directly. I do not think I have any relation to the line, only the working relationship.

Henry Perry Garfield b. Dec 1824 in NY son of Thomas C. Garfield and Mary E.? was married about 1864 to Sarah Jane Tew who was born Nov 20, 1837 in England.

I do not know if the Thomas #1 is the same person as Thomas #2 but I would like to discuss the Thomas #2 with you.
The Thomas #2's father (Thomas Carlton Garfield) is my 2nd great grandfather.
My great grandfather is Thomas Carlton Garfield's son Henry Perry Garfield.

There is the great possibility that your Mary Flack Fleck Wherry is the daughter of John and Jenette Fleck. Did Mary have a sister Jenette that also married a Wherry? I have a copy of the will of John Fleck which lists these two daughters (and other children) married to Wherrys. Unfortunately they are not my Flacks.

He was married to Jeaneva Turcotte. He died in Belchertown, MA.
His son does not know the names of Robert's parents... he believes Robert was born in Ohio.

I don't have any infromation at all..but urge you to post anything you have. Every scrap of information is very important and I am trying to make a database of people immigrating from the Dingle area..they seem to have traveled in groups..many ended up in Springfield, MA area and some in Iowa..and some in awful area of New York, 5 corners I read somewhere. mg

I found Thomas in the 1800 census living next to his father Solomon, the name on the census is Griffel. I am currently researching his sister Rebecca. She supposedly married a Gale Washburn. Solomon, Thomas's brother died in Naples, Ontario County, NY. Solomon married a Cynthia Smith. I hope this helps you.

I am looking for these two surnames as my mother lived with both of these families her name was Leona Garfied b. 1917 and I am not sure if she was adopted or not. It was rumored she came to Mo. on the orphan train she was with Emma Cory in Nevada Mo, until her death around 1924 then appeared in Stephen Garfields family in the 1930 census as a daughter? any help would be appreciated

I got your post and was surprised to see I also am looking for this line as Leona M. Garfield is my deceased mother. as a child my mother back on vacation to Nevada Mo. to visit relatives I was very young then and didn't know who they were. I know my mom was raised by her aunt Emma Cory I believe a sister to Steven and lived with her until her death and then went to Steven Garfield's home and was named daughter in there household? It is a mystery who her father really is? or who her mother really is? if you find out anything please let me know.

I believe the Leona M. Garfield b. 1916 or 1917 is my mother who has passed away and I am trying to trace her line. as I understand Stephen was married previously to someone and produced my mother which was raised by Emma Cory until she passed away about oct. 7th 1929 it is believed her maiden name was Garfield and when she passed away my mom went to live with Steven and his new wife and their children if you can help I would appreciate it as I am not sure of my facts. who is my mom's mom.
