Thank you, but I've searched the Nottingham archives. There's no birth, no marriage and no death for a Boyfield Garfoot. Neither is there a Boyfield Garfoot on FamilySearch.

Also I've not been able to find George in the 1841 census or any Garfoots in the St Mary's parish of Nottingham.

I only know that when George came back from Ireland and Malta with his new family, something/someone brought him back to Nottingham. It would have seemed more logical, given that his wife had family in Ireland, for him to have moved back there. Why Nottingham if he had no family ties there?

Lee :-)

Hi

Maybe you should look to see if there are any Boyfields as a surname in Nottingham, possibly someone well off as I thought George Snr was quite well off when he was first married and before he was sent down - maybe Daddy was prepared to do something to set him up?

There are Garfoots in Lincolnshire so wherever she was removed to was probably her home parish? Have you checked for her there as a baptism? and any later marriages, to rule out taking up the wrong Jane Garfoot? then at least you can be fairly sure whehter George Snr was illegitimate?

Ruth

Hi Ruth. yes, we did exchange messages on GR some time ago. My ggrandmother was Lydia Garfoot.

I've just met brick walls trying to trace George Garfoot senior. I think his mother may have been Jane Garfoot who was removed from Nottingham in 1827 to Lincolnshire. There's also a Jane Garfoot who married a couple of years later (can't remember the exact details without looking at my notes) Think it might have been to Thomas Coulson or something like that about 1836 I think St mary's, Nottm. Perhaps this is the same Jane? George sen gives his place of birth as St Mary's (but it isn't because I've searched the parish records) In the 1841 census in Nottingham there's a Jane Coulson and son George the right age.

Lee

I wondered which of George Garfoot's children you were descended from?

You see one of them (George James) ran off with my great grandmother Jemima Hartwell nee Rice - they had a couple of sons but they split up at some time and he married in 1918

I checked out quite a bit of information about George senior too and would really like to know if you have any other information about George James Garfoot?

I think we may have been in touch via Genes in the past. Would be interested if you have a photo of George senior, George James or one of his siblings as I am writing up a piece about Jemima's husband's attempts to divorce her and the implications of that on following generations.

Would be very grateful to hear from you

Ruth
Charles Henry Porter Garfoot (registered as Garford on his birth on 19th August 1897 in Mansfield) -illegitimate son of George James Garfoot and Jemima Rice (the mother's name is incorrect on the birth certificate as they were hiding up from pursuit by her husband) Jemima Rice and her husband were my great grandparents
Charles served in WW1 and survived, receiving medals. He married Annie Pavier and their son John was born in BArnsley in 1926 - in the meantime she seems to have had an illegitimate child during the marriage by William Henry Phillips in 1924 named James William Phillips - he was raised as Jim Garfoot and apparently only learned his true parentage when he married in 1942. Charles father had at some stage left his mother and married in 1918 - I think Charles marriage was in 1919 - I don't have a note of that with me but I found it on the ancestry BMD. Possibly Charles did not want Jum to go through what he had, or really loved his wife. Anyway that is all I have - as Charles is my great-uncle would be interested to know if you can tell me something about the PAvier family - do you have any photos of the couple or their descendants? Regards Ruth
You're brilliant. Thank you!

It's not that I'm stressed so much as it's an itching niggle because I've tried everything I can think of! Actually I have several dead ends like this one in parts of my tree!

I didn't think certs were available before Sep 1837? And there's no listing for his birth in the County Archives (they even let me look at the original documents). Also in the 1841 census there are no other Garfoots listed in Nottingham (only Rutland - too far away to be a match).

I grew up in Nottingham and most of my family are still there, but I've retired to Dorset.

Thanks again

ok i can see you are getting in a state over this and i will help you the best i can ok?

ok, now there is nothing i can do today being a sunday. i will have to wait till tommorow. what i will do first is get you to stop whatever your doing to find your great grandad right now. because it is not working and you are getting to stressed out.

i will contact my local births deaths and marriages registry office tommorow. i will get the county office details from them. i will then send you that information.

then all you do is ask for a form to get a birth certificate. and once they send it out to you fill it in and post it off with a cheque for $17 or £10 (i think thats how much they are, but the pricing will be on the form).

once you have your great grandads birth certificate you will have the information about boyfield garfoot as well and who he was married to.

my end of the Garfoot family are from the north east of England. my grandad was born in west auckland and my dad was born in gillesgate moor. as for me i was born in Easington county durham. but i live just outside nottingham city center about 15 miles outside.

Thanks for your (quick) reply. I lived in Nottingham all my life until 6 years ago! I went to the Archives when I was visiting family a couple of years ago and looked through the info there. There's absolutely no reference to a George Garfoot or a Boyfield Garfoot.

George moved to Ireland (Army hospital corps) after his first wife and baby died in 1852 and then was stationed in Malta. He married for a second time in Ireland and had several more children. He returned to England around 1877 and settled with his new family back in Nottingham.

I can't help thinking he must have had family in Nottingham. Why else would he come back to Nottingham rather than go back to Ireland where his wife's family lived?

I'm guessing he must have been illegitimate. But why the name Garfoot? Short of looking up all the Georges born in 1826 and 1827 in Nottingham and then checking the records to find a George not accounted for, I don't think I'm ever going to find him!

The first reference I have for him is that he was imprisoned in Nottingham prison for 5 months in 1846! After that I can pretty much account for the rest of his life.

Phew!

hi. what i can suggest to you is ... you know your great grandad was born in Nottingham. so all you would have to do is go to your local births deaths and marriages office (if you live outside of Nottinghamshire or outside this country the UK). ask them for a form to get your great grandads birth certificate, and also ask how to send it to the Nottinghamshire head office of the birth deaths and marriage office. and they will send you out his birth certificate. this will also give you your great great grandads full name as well as your great great grand mothers name and where they were living at the time. i hope this helps.

I've been reading the posts about the Garfoot family. My great grandfather was George Garfoot who said he was born in St Mary's Nottingham in 1826/27. On both his marriage certs (!) he gives his father's name as Boyfield Garfoot.

I can find no listing for a George Garfoot in the parish birth register, no listing for Boyfield Garfoot anywhere at all. Neither is George included in the 1841 census.

Does anyone have any info that might help?

Many thanks

Hi Diane

it was nice to hear from you. however i don't think we are related. you see my dad (John Garfoot) was never a reverend.my family breaks down like this ...

their is me (Raymond Garfoot) my brother Michael Roland Garfoot and my sister Mary Ann Garfoot.

then their is my dad John Robert Percy Garfoot
my mother Doreen Constance Garfoot (Adams was her maiden name)she re-married and is now a Dennington.

my Granddad was Percy Roland Garfoot, he married my Grandmother Mary Ann Garfoot (her maid name was Garside)

going down my mothers side of the family my Grandad was called Hugh Adams and he married Annie Rayner Adams (maiden name Liddle)

Hugh Adams dad (my great-grandad) was called John Robert Adams and he married Sarah Jane Adams (maiden name Watson) and after he died she re-married and became a Mulgrew.

Annie Rayner Adams (my grandmother) her dad was called William Liddle.as far as i am aware we all born in the Durham area except for my great grand mother on my mothers side, Sarah Jane Watson. she was from Ireland.

so you see my problem, none of what you told me makes any sense.

as far as the coat of arms is concerned, i don't how to tell you this. most people make the mistake that a coat of arms belongs to a perticular family. however in reality a coat of arms was given to an individual and not a family, let me explain.

if you had 2 brothers and the king (at the time) bestowed a coat of arms for doing some brave action or whatever to one brother.then that coat of arms can be claimed by that brother and his decendants. however the other brother cannot claim the same coat of arms nor can any of his decendants, even though they are brothers and share the same family name. so although your mother was given or she bought a coat of arms(the family coat of arms for Garfoot) it may not be for the right side of the Family Garfoot if that makes any sense?

i do know their are a lot of Garfoots in Wisconsin. they have a River and a Library called Garfoot. if memory serves i think it is Mount Horeb is it? and Cross Plains both in Wisconsin, is that where you are Wisconsin? i do know there is a Rosemary Garfoot who works at the Garfoot Library. if you punch in your internet browser GARFOOT you will see her name. i have spoken to her in a letter. but she is not related to me either.

i hope this information will help you in some way, please by all means let me know.

Ray, We must be related. I heard Rev. John Garfoot speak of a Raymond...are you Adrian's brother perhaps? When my mother Dorothy Strickland (nee Garfoot) was visiting England, she was given a coat of arms and the documents I see you have. My sister Louise also has been to visit Adrian, Edna and Rev. John. What fun I had this spring. I believe you were on a trip (Germany?) and could not get back in time for our meeting. Perhaps next time! Diane

My mother was a Garfoot, born and raised in rural south central Wisconsin (west of Madison). She and I have visited our Garfoot relatives in England, specifically Rev. John Garfoot of King's Lynn. He gave us a coat of arms (it has a goat on it) which I could forward to you. I'm at work presently but will be home in a few hours. I found many ancestral Garfoot markers in the cemetery at Gretham. My grandfather is Harvey, his father Harry, his father William who came from England with Sarah. I will write more later.
Hello Kevin,
Are you surprised to see a cousin online? If so, I am glad I could make you happy. Your sister, Eve, and I are close to one another in age and I only live about 1 mile or so from Roman and Henera's farm. Your mother, Dellas, (as my mom called her) were first cousins--making you and me second cousins. My grandfather was George Garfoot--a brother to your grandfather, Charles. The parents of George and Charles were John and Emily Simpson Garfoot. George and Charles were the youngest of the 9 children John and Emily Simpson had. My mother's name was Alice Garfoot Lukken and her parents were George and Elizabeth Meyer Garfoot.
I have been interested in genealogy for both sides of my family as well as both sides of my husband's family for many years. Just recently I received notice of a Simpson family reunion that will be taking place in June in the Madison area. The "Simpson's" are a branch of the family I am not real familiar with so I am going to the reunion. Another cousin that you and I have is more familiar with that branch and she is going to come also. About all I have done with the Simpson's are to gather Civil War Pension records. I have done the same for John Garfoot. Have you ever gone into the online site for the Wisconsin Veteran's Museum? If you haven't, try it and you will see John Garfoot listed in the roster of soldiers as well as relatives of John's wife. Another second cousin of your's has the Civil War sword that John used during the war.
If I can help you with anything, or if you are interested in attending the Simpson (John's wife's maiden name) family reunion, let me know. I will try to supply you with the needed information.
Give my hello's to your mother and also to Eve.
Eileen Lukken Vassau
My name is Ross Garfoot. My ancestors migrated from Durham in the 1870s. I would be interested in any information on the history of the Garfoots including motto and coat of arms.

My name is Sarah Garfoot. My father is Wayne, and my uncle (wayne's brother) is Glenn. Their father is Keith, and Keith has a sister named Carmen. Keiths father is Vaughn Garfoot. This is what I have off hand, but I will gladly email you back some more of our family history. My grandfather told me that one of his relatives a long while back made a journey to find out our history, and she apparently ended up in Germany. If you will email me back at my actual email address, I will gladly share with you anything that I can get! Thanks!

I am pretty sure we are related. My mother's maiden name is Garfoot' her father Charles, I believe his father William. I remember something about Rutland, England. I would be very interested in coat of arms and meaning of family name if you would be kind enough to send. Also, who are your parents and grandparents? I can ask my mother for more info. I will look and see what information I can forward to you.
