We live in WA. Albert James Garlick, b1867, whose father was John, whose father was William, whose father was John & Susannah, married in Eaglehawk, Vic and eventually came over here. Lost his wife in Kalgoorlie, 1900, remarried my grandmother Rose Stroud. Moved to Katanning, WA, where we live. Hence there are quite a few Garlick's in WA. 4 boys by the 1st marriage, & same with the 2nd! Three boys from 1st family went to WW1, two died. Carl Eric Garlick and Clive Lancelot Garlick. We have had plaques put under a tree in Kings Park, Perth, during a dedication ceremony, a couple of years ago, & had a reunion with some of the descendants of the 1 st marriage.
Interesting to read some of the postings that have been put on the board. I didn't know that William and George convicts)had a brother Henry come to Aust too, so thanks for those who have put that on record. All the best. Neville

Rodolphus Garlick son of Daniel son of Abel son of Henry & Mary

Rodolphus Garlick was born 26 Sep 1793 in Lanesboro, Berkshire Co. MA to Daniel Garlick and Sabra Starkweather Kirby. He died 5 Dec 1833 in Richmond, Ashtabula Co. OH and is buried in the Springfield Cem. in Erie Co. PA.

I thought I would put an item in on Rodolphus since his data in the Garlick Book leaves out most of his children and his famous brother Theodatus' bio gives the wrong Daniel as father.

Rodolphus served in the war of 1812. Rhodolphus dates of birth and death are recorded in his daughter Susan's book. She relates that the family was doing well when her father signed as cosigner on a loan for a friend. The friend defaulted and the court took everything Rodolphus had including his blacksmith tools which was a stupid thing for the court to do since it removed his livelihood. Rhodophus was so despondent that he did not live long after that.

Rhodolphus' War of 1812 service is found in "US Army Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914." It says:

"2598 Garlick, Rodulphus, Private 21st U.S. Infantry, 5ft 9 inches blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, age 19, blacksmith. born Lanesboro, Mass., Enlisted at Middlebury June 10, 1813 by Ensign Hopikins for 18 months." The comment says

"Capt. Chapman's Co., Book 1812 & 14, J'd from Capt. Grafton's Co., Sept. -- 1813, & left at Niagra -- M. R. Capt. Morrell Marston's Co., Dec. 31/12, On furlough -- Co. Book 1813 & 15, Fur expired Feby 1/14 -- returned May 1/14 -- Present May -- 1814 -- Sent to Hospital at Buffalo July 3/14 -- returned Aug. 4/14 -- Discharged at Erie, Aug 12/14, term exp'd -- also ap, as Adolphus Garlic & as Garhi."

This shows that Rodolphus did join up at Middlebury, VT even though that state once responded to my query that they had no record of his service. It also shows how he ended up being discharged in Erie, PA which explains why he was in the area where he met Anna Porter.

Anna received a military warrant #9226 for 160 acres in Van Wert Co. OH as widow of Rodolphus Garlick, private in Capt. Marston's Co. 21st Regiment, US. Infantry, War of 1812.

Susan said her father is buried in the Springfield, Erie Co., PA cem., but he is also listed on a monument to his mother at Washington Street Cemetery in Middlebury, VT. Dr. Theodatus Garlick who was a pioneer in plastic surgery, fish husbandry, and photography, erected the monument to his mother and included the dates for her children who had already passed away at that time.

Rodophus Garlick and Anna Porter were parents of

1. Dr. Carmin Porter "Carmi" Garlick
b 1818 Erie PA d 30 June 1865 Milwaukee, WI
2. Jane S. Garlick Simpson
d Aug 1848 OH
3. Eliza A. Garlick Nichols
b 26 May 1823 Addison VT d 15 Apr 1903 Clark Co OH
4. Harriet C. Garlick
b 1827 Girard, PA d 26 Oct 1852 Milford Center, OH
5. Susan R. Emerick
b 28 Apr 1829 Girard PA d after 1891 OH
6. Charles G. Garlick
b 4 Jun 1831 Girard, PA d 29 Dec 1900 Hartville, MO
or Okmulgee, IT

Charles marrried Harriet Fawver/Fauver 5 Apr 1860 Cherokee, Logan Co.
Hi Diane

I do not have full conformation that Thomas Willson is the son ofJohn & Susannah.

Below is the notes that I have written in my book relating to this family:-

'The death record for Thomas Wilson GARLICK states father as John in the year of 1901 in Ashfield, New South Wales, Australia (reg. # 12655).

The death record that I found for Mary GARLICK, was 1906 in Woonona, New South Wales, Australia (reg. # 11108), parents Thomas and Elizabeth. The problem with the NSW index, it does not use surnames/maiden names for the parents. The only time you will receive both surnames is through a marriage record.

I choose this record as quite a bit of the family lived in the area. Daughter Elizabeth and son John were married there, Mary’s death was just one year after Elizabeth’s marriage, so the chances of them still living in the area is quite good. I could be wrong, so if anyone knows for sure, please let me know.'

Did the newspaper artical get it wrong? Mary's father was named Thomas!

Something to think about and some more research is needed on this family!
Sharon

Hi, I'm descended from Thomas Wilson, he was my gr gr grandfather. His son John Wilson married Elizabeth Mary McLoughlin in Woonona NSW. A cousin of mine, who is also researching the family tree, doesn't think that Thomas Wilson was a child of John and Susannah, are you certain that they are parents of T.W? I have always thought it to be true, but now not so sure as my cousin has a newspaper article of the engagement notice stating T.W's father was also named Thomas, hope you can clear this up for me,
regards Diane

I am seeking any/as much information/history with regards to:

* Walter C Garlick (American?) married Edith Kozeschnik (b. Austrian 1918) in early 1950 at Westminster (Middlesex).

As far as I can work out Edith travelled to America with Erika Kozeschnik in 1947 but Erika returned via Scotland in 1949.

Walter & Edith had a son (maybe more?) called Peter W Garlick (b. Bedford July 1950).

Peter married Carol J Hopkins (b. Hitchin April 1953) in Hitchin in April 1970. Peter & Carol had three children (2 sons & 1 daughter – Nicholas Jason, Raymond Peter & Samantha Nicola)

* There is another daughter that Carol had but unknown father – Donna Marie Garlick (b. Hitchin 1976)

Peter has possibly been married another two times in and around Hertfordshire.
* Doreen A Lawrence (1984) * Eileen Moule (1996)

All three children from Peter & Carol are now married including the fourth child.

* Samantha Nicola Garlick married in Stevenage June 1994 to Stephen J Kenning with 3-5 children?
* Nicholas Jason Barrow (Nicolas Jasone) was married in Stevenage September 1995 to Michelle O Tharle with 2 children.
* Donna Marie Garlick married in Harlow November 1996 to James A Hodgkins
* Raymond Peter Barrow married in Stevenage to Amanda with 1 child (Ray has two other children with Kelly).

Please help if you can.
William Garlick b March 27 1855 d August 21917 Asheville NC

I am trying to find the parents of William Garlick who was born in Virginia on March 27 1855. He and 2 brothers were living with Fannie Walker Garlick Hill and her husband Robert Pollard Hill in 1860. I assume that Mrs. Hill was related to the boys, but I cant find that relationship. Her only sibling was a sister Lucy Garlick. If anyone has any information , please contact me @ tyebasil@aol.com or reply to this message.
Julie Dameron

Thank you so much!!!
I am really only intereseted in my grandfather and his siblings at this stage: George Henry Garlick and Mary Ann Miller had four surviving children, Mary Ann , Charlotte, William Henry and James Lyndon.
I am about to order George Henry and Mary Ann Miller's marriage certificate to try and discover their parents details etc, am wondering how to track James's siblings, Mary Ann Garlick is such a common name but none of those on Ancestry seem to have the right year of birth or the right parent's names. Confusing. She was still alive in the 1891 census, age 13, but is not on the 1901 census that I can discover.
Would love to learn more about them if I can,
Thanks so much for your info
Lyndy

Dear Lyndy, I see that James came to Australia on the 'Orvieto' in 1910 and appears in the electoral roll for Maryborough as an accuntant in 1913 with Alice May.
Polly may be Mary the original wife of George Garlick as Polly is a diminutive name for Mary.
George came from Worcestershire as you can see on the 1891 census.Do you have his will?
Regards, Lyn

Hi Lyn
Was wondering if you have found anything further about my Garlick's from Machester? I know they lived at 11 Darley St at the time of a couple of censuses (1901 etc) and am anxiously awaiting the 1911 census to see what had happened.
George "Harry" Garlick remarried someone named Polly and died in the mid-1930's leaving two villas, valued at 750 pounds to her.
Anyway, please let me know if you have found anything,
Kind regards
Lyndy

Re: George Garlick b 1866 India emigrated to Toronto Canada bef 1891

George Garlick was the son of Samuel Garlick (b 1806, Hadfield Derby) and Mary Swindells. Although, according to his son's documentary evidence, George's name was probably Christopher George, he was continually referred to in his own documents as George. George enlisted in the 36th Regiment of Foot in 1857 when he was almost 19 years old. He served as a boy soldier until he turned 19, and then progressed to Sergeant. Some misfortune befell George and he was put in the brig for 1 day and busted back to Private. He did recover his rank to Corporal and earned two good conduct recognitions later.

On 5 Aug 1861, George Garlick married Catherine Smith, the daughter of Martin Smith of Ballysax, Co Kildare, Ireland. The Regiment was in Ireland at the time and moved variously to Co Kilkenny and Co Dublin. In 1863 the Regiment went to West Bengal, India. While in India George and Catherine had two living children: Mary Zipporah Garlick (b 1864 in Lucknow) and Christopher George Garlick (b 25 Aug 1866 in Shajehanpore).

Some time prior to 1874 George was discovered to be medically unfit for duty. He was recalled from India (with his two children, and no wife - so she had most likely died) and arrived in Pembroke Dock to face a retirement board. The board agreed unanimously to pension George out of service at the end of April 1874 but no medical report was attached to his Chelsea Pensioner papers. His death certificate indicates he died of pancreatic and stomach cancer early in December 1874. A very painful way to die.

George went home to Brinnington, Cheshire, to die. The informant on his death certificate was Ann Kinsey Garlick, wife to his brother Thomas.

Mary Zipporah was boarded out with George's sister Ruth Hargraves in Hadfield and ultimately married James Bamforth of Tintwistle. Christopher George was boarded in an Industrial School and emigrated to Canada in October 1881. He arrived in Canada and served 9 years with the Royal Canadian Regiment. After his retirement from RCR, he married Elizabeth Wilson Smith, working as a tobacconist in Toronto. George and Elizabeth had 10 children. Both George and his son, Keith George Garlick, enlisted in the 12th Canadian Rangers at the outbreak of WWI with George dropping his age so he could enlist. Both men returned from the war. There are still Garlick descendants in Toronto.

If anyone has any further information about these people, I would be happy to hear it.

Cheers

Lynne Simpson
Canberra Australia

George Garlick b 1866 India emigrated to Toronto Canada bef 1891

I have George Garlick b 24 March 1866 in Shajehampore, Uttar Pradesh, India. George was the son of George Garlick Snr and Catherine Smith. He returned to England with his father and sister, Mary Zipporah Garlick (b 1864, Lucknow) in 1874. His father was to be medically discharged from the 36th Regiment of Foot. George Snr died in the DecQ of 1874 and there was no-one available to take in George Jr.

George Jr was enrolled in the Industrial School in Stockport where he boarded. In October 1881 his case was reviewed by the School board and he was given assistance to emigrate to Canada. In 1891 George is a soldier; in 1901 he is living with his wife Elizabeth and family and working as a Tobacconist in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

If anyone has more information about George, I would be delighted to hear about it.

Cheers

Lynne Simpson
Canberra Australia

Your Garlicks are from Barnsley in Yorkshire but came to Manchester later. See the 1871 census for John, Betty and family. Cheers, Lyn
