Garratts from Suffolk, UK?

Hi there, I've been searching for a while now, but thanks to limited information available/no living knowledge from my dad, I've been having trouble finding any information earlier than 1899. I know my great-grandfather, John William Percy Garratt, was born in Suffolk on October 7th, 1899, and died in 1970. He was married to Mildred Lizzie Dunnett, born June 1904, died September 1977. I'm trying to find his father who I think was also named John, but I'm not positive. My dad did mention that our family may have moved to Suffolk from Rutland, but I'm not sure of when. If anyone knows anything, or if there are anymore Garratts in Suffolk/Rutland or surrounding counties, please let me know!

So......do you think the Garratts of Philadelphia who ended up in Illinois are in some way related to you?

There were many Garretts/Garratts in Philadelphia is why I am asking if you think this particular branch might have a connection to your family.

Has any member of your family ever attempted even a bit of a family tree that might be available to you?

:)
Jeanne

I've always been very interested in the history of the Garrett's of Philadelphia. I have documents to show when my mother's side came to America in the early 1900s. But the history of my father's side, the Garrett's, always seemed purposefully vague. England was mentioned once by an Aunt, but I was always told The Garrett's came from Wales. My research was hampered by the erratic nature of my father's side. My father hasn't talked to 6 of his siblings since about the 1994 death of his mother. It is a sore subject.

GARRATT (Garrett) - PHILADELPHIA PA 1800-1850 - LATER IN ILLINOIS

Looking for a surname GARRATT/Garrett whose matriarch, Ann Garratt (her maiden name is unknown), b. est. 1799 in ENG, was living in West Philadelphia PA on the 1850 US Census.

With her that year were (3)of her (many, other names unknown) children:

GEORGE GARRATT - b. est. 1833-34 in PA. Probably married a CAROLINE HAYWARD in Maucopin County IL

SAMUEL GARRATT - b. est. 1844 IN pa. Probably married Amanda Thurston in Maucopin County IL.

SARAH JANE GARRATT - b. est. 1835 in PA. Married William Turner in Greene County IL.

I would like to know the first name of Ann Garratt's husband. Did he die in the Philadelphia area, when, etc.? Or was he missing on the 1850 census because he was in IL already--did he die there instead, before 1860's census when Ann is shown as a 'widow'?

What were the names of others of Ann's children?
I believe she may have had a dozen or so children. (One possibility is an Ann Green (Mrs. George) who lived next door to Ann Garratt on both the 1850 US census in West Philadelphia and the 1860 US Census for Greene County IL.)

When did this particular family come to the US?
Since Ann Garratt was b. around 1799 in England, she apparently came after that.

Since the youngest child I know of, George, was born in PA in 1833, according to censuses, the family emigrated between 1799 and 1833 apparently, probably much earlier.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Philadelphia research has netted me nothing so far, other than the 1850 US Census mentioned above.

Many thanks!
Jeanne

Hi, my name is Brian Garratt, I don’t know if we are the same family but my side of the Garratt’s come from the Kent area of England my father was:

ROBERT HENRY GARRATT Born 17th July 1920, Eastry, Near Deal Kent. Died
15/03/1984 St.Marys Hospital Portsmouth. Buried at Sea.
Parent’s -Edward George Garratt.Born 28th May 1871.Died 12th April 1932.
Nellie Garratt (nee Overton) Born 31st September1881.Died31/12/1938.

I don’t know if any of this connects with your Garratt family. My Brother Ron,

Ronald Arthur Garratt Born 22nd July 1946 at 84 Cemetery Road, Deal Kent by Gaslight. Passed away Plymouth 11th January2007

traced some of the family history and found that one of our ancestors was John Garratt who was Lord Mayor of London in 1824, he laid the foundation stone for London Bridge ( the one that is now somewhere in Arizona U.S.A) does this connect in anyway with your London Garratt’s

His lordship's name is Garratt; he is a tea-dealer. GARRATT, Sir John (d.1859), citizen and goldsmith, Alderman of Bridge Ward 1821-32, Sheriff 1821-2, Lord Mayor 1824-5. Family and estate accounts. 1809-24.
Part of the plaque inscription written in Latin reads:
The first stone of this work
was laid
by John Garratt, esquire,
lord mayor,
on the 15th day of June,
in the sixth year of king George the Fourth,
and in the year of our Lord
m.d.ccc.xxv.
Hi Joyce, you may be connected, I have only run my line down from John and Elizabeth 1722 -1799. He had sons of which I have found Joseph Henry and thomas although there could be more. I did come across a Richard who Ithought was connected via Shifnall. I you can go back to John you may find he had brothers, from which you are descended. I am hoping for another visit to Shrewsbury Archives soon to try and find out more about John. If I find anything I will let you know. Please feel free to brouse my tree. Also try Joy DuLaney who is another Garratt and Jeanette Garratt-williams. Regards Pat

Hi,

Re: the Garratt family of Northampton.

Does anyone know any details of the book written about the Garratts previously mentioned by Steven Garratt? His email address doesn't work!

I've traced back to my gg-grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Garratt b. 1860, Northampton and would like to find out more.

Sarah had a brother called Joseph Garratt, b 1869. Their parents were William Garratt (b 1838) and his wife Hannah, b 1839. (It's possible Hannah's maiden name was also Garratt but I'm unsure at the moment.)

William had a sister called Clara and his parents were James Garratt b. 1817 and his wife Elizabeth.

All of the above were from Northamptonshire, I think from Wilbury / Wellingborough. Being from Northampton, the majority of them worked as shoe/bookmakers.

Hope someone can be of help!

Thanks

Hello
I don't know how I came to get yopur message, as it was addressed to a Stephen.
Frances Alfred Garratt is my paternal grandfather. He married Ada Elizabeth Fitzsimmons at Merewether in 1908 and their marriage was dissolved in 1926. Ada then took up and married a Charles Jacob Mickkelson. Arthur took up with a lady named Alice and I believe had several children with her.
Frank and Ada had 4 children, Dorothy Honor, Olive May (Maisie) Ada b.1911 I've been told, but I cannot find her, then Charles (my father)
Sometime after the marriage broke down, a sum of money was exchanged between the two men so that Charles Mickkelson would raise baby Charles as his own. Frank took the eldest girl, Dorothy, and Ada kept Maisie and Charley. These 3 children did nor know a thing about this, until Maisie applied for her birth certificate to get married, then it all had to come out in the open. Maisie then used the name Garratt as she was registered in that name, but Charley was registered as Mickkelson.
Regards
Cherie

Hello Steven ... I was attracted to your post because my brother's name was Stephan Garratt. Anyway, I think I'm part of that Garratt line. Like the other people who have replied, I have Ada and Joseph. Joseph married Vera M Gittoes on 1919. Although, all through my research (which isn't much) I had Ada and Garratt family coming on the Orontes when she was 7. My grandfather was Frances Alfred Garratt b1887 d1939. My father was Neill Garratt b1933 d1975. He married Kaye Rhonda Powell in 1954/56 and there are five of us Kelvin b1958, Sharlene b1960, Stephan b1961 d1998, Terrence b1963 and Kathleen b 1970. I just read a post that an Ada married Frances Alfred. Maybe I'm not from the same line. My Frances Alfred was in a relationship with a woman called Alice and they never married (their children were aghast when told this from her death bed) I wonder if Ada was called Alice because of the sister. I hope this helps.

Kathleen

I recently purchased a bunch of old photos. One of the photos shows a young boy and girl and is labeled on the back "Garratt". I cannot make out the spellings for the children's names. The photo was taken at the Weston & Son Photography Studio in St. Leonards-on-sea. I learned that this is in East Sussex, UK. Attached is a copy of the photo. If these are your ancestors, please contact me.

Hello Jon,

I am replying to your GARRATT's message which you posted to the ancestry.com message board.

My GARRATT's in the 1800's came from Netherton Dudley. I believe that that lived before this time in Rowley Regis. (1700's)
However this has not been confirmed as yet. I have only very sketchy information regarding the Garratt's from Rowley Regis.

I have a lot of information on the GARRATT's from Dudley and I would think that there could be some sort of connection between your GARRATT's and mine.

Are you researching the GARRATT's name or have you found me by chance. I would like very much if you could contact me on my personal e-mail address killaloe@btinternet.com and maybe we could chat further.

Very Best Wishes Tina

Barker Garratt / Battison

We have followwed this trail back to the 1770's in the last few weeks.

It would appear that the name came in to the familly through the BATTISON family, but are still no nearer discovering why the name Barker is a Christian name!

This lot are all from Newport Pagnell, Bucks

We have David BATTISON (b abt 1700) m. Mary
Children - David b. 20/6/1724 and
William b. 4/1/ 1729/30 m. Sarah WINCKLES
Children - Michael (b.3/9/1755)
Susannah (b. 27/9/1776)
Barker (b.Oct 1777)

Susannah marries Thomas GARRATT and is father to our earliest Barker Garratt!

Interestingly David BATTISON appears to have had a brother(?) called Thomas who married Mary. They had a son, William BATTISON (B. abt 1827) who married Mary and they had a son BArker BATTISON b. 19/6/1751.

This apparent cousin was born 26 years earlier, suggesting the name Barker came in to the Battisons before 1700.

Garratt - Hillier Twp, Prince Edward Co Ontario > MB>SK

Looking for any information on the family of Wallace Edgar Garratt b. 1854 d. 1936. He was apparently in Hillier Twp in 1861 but I have not had a chance to get to the census records as yet. Wallace may be the son of Robert Solomon Garratt and Mary Jane Hubbs. The family may also be Quaker as this is what the 1881 Census in Manitoba showed for Wallace.

Wallace married Nancy Jane Bryant and they moved to Manitoba. They had 5 children: Mildred b. 1875 ON, Lyle b. 1877 ON, Alice b. 1881 Manitoba, Elva b. 1883, Effie b. 1886

Any help on this family would be much appreciated.
