In my case GARRETTSON is the name first used by a third generation Dutchman whose immigrant grandfather had the first name GARRETT. His father and later his stepfather used several Dutch and Germany forms of a patrimimic (sp?) surname pattern. The Garrettson spelling came after the man married an English lady.

Re: Garrison of Michigan New York

My ggg grandfather Alfred Francis b. March 22, 1813 d. April 1, 1862 lived in Ingham Co. & is buried in the Dansville cemetery. We just found out recently in some information on his lawyer son's bio that Alfred was married to an Eliza Garrison born approx 1816 in N.J. She died 5-22-1865 & is also buried in the Dansville cemetery in Ingham Co., Michigan. We have been unable to locate Eliza's parents but it appears she may have been related to the Samuel Garrison line as he is also buried at the Dansville cemetery. It appears that there was an unnamed female b. in either N.Y. or N.J. from 1811-1815 in N.Y but an earlier female looks to be born in either N.Y. or N.J. Has anyone come across Eliza?

I don't know if this will help with your Garrison search but I ran across something today at the Floyd County courthouse in Rome, Georgia.

I was looking through some deeds and found the following for a Moses Garrison Sr.

Grantor is Moses Garrison Sr

He granted 80 acres each to Francis Garrison and a Sophia Garrison in 1863.

If anyone needs more information, I can go back to the court house and get a copy of the deed.

My Garrison line:
I am searching for James Madison Garrison (b 1840 South Carolina and d: 1924 Cave Spring Ga). He was a saw mill operator and lived in Cherokee County Alabama for awhile. I suspect that he is the son of a David Garrison who also lived in Cave Spring (and was a saw mill operator as well) during 1870 but have no concrete proof.

Y-DNA sample has been submitted to Family Tree DNA.

I agree with your dispute of the information. It just doesn't seem right despite all of the notations in Sons of the American Revolution submissions. Everything for the Isaac Garrison who is buried in Warrick Co lists his birthplace as Ohio in 1797.

However, Joel Garrison did not come to Indiana until 1816 with his second wife Christeny and several children from his first marriage.

Joel's first wife Sarah White is listed as dying in New Jersey in 1796 (before our Isaac's birth).

So, who are Isaac's parents?

Hey folks,

Family Tree DNA (FTDNA.com) has notified Project Administrators of a great sale BUT it's only 48 hours. These prices will expire at Midnight Saturday. It's a great time to get involved in DNA for genealogy or upgrade your current markers. The copy and paste lost something in the "copy and paste" but I think you'll get the idea. The first number is the usual price, the second number is the sale price. Some of these items are rarely on sale.

New Kits

Current Group Price SALE PRICE
Y-DNA 12 $99 $59
mtDNA $99 $59
Y-DNA 37 $149 $129
Y-DNA 67 $238 $199
Family Finder $289 $199
mtFullSequence (FMS) $299 $249
Y-DNA 12 + mtDNA $179 $118
FF + Y-DNA 12 $339 $258
FF + mtDNA $339 $258
FF+ Y-DNA 37 $438 $328
FF + mtDNAPlus $438 $328
Comprehensive (FF + FMS + Y-DNA 67) $797 $657
Upgrades
Y-DNA 12 $89 $59
mtDNA add-on $89 $59
Y-DNA 12-37 Marker $99 $69
Y-DNA 37-67 Marker $99 $79
Y-DNA 12-67 Marker $199 $148
mtFullSequence upgrade (HVR1 to Mega) $269 $199
mtFullSequence upgrade (HVR2 to Mega) $269 $199
mtFullSequence add-on $289 $219
Family Finder add-on $289 $199

Let us know if the Project Administrators can do anything to help you get signed up.

I would first state that this is not a positive ID of Abraham Garrison who as an adult lived and died in Nova Scotia. However, much of the research points to the possibility that Abraham GERRITSEN (or similar spelling)[call him #1] born in Walkill NY about 1750 is the same person as Abraham GARRISON [call him #2] who died March 17, 1814 Glen Haven, Halifax, Nova Scotia (vital records). The link is that #1 joined the King's Orange Rangers from NY during the Rev. War that eventually was stationed in Halifax Nova Scotia for "the duration." The Rangers disbanded at the end of the war and many of the men stayed in Halifax (Loyalist Institute sources). This makes for the possibility the 2 are the same person.
To date, little information about #2 being in Nova Scotia prior to the War has been found. Conversely, little info has been found on #1 being in NY after the War.
Another point is that in earlier research, it was stated that #2came from Philidelphia. In fact, his family came from Philipsburgh, NY (The Settlement of Philipsburgh by McKenzie). Sort of similar sounding places so there could have been transcription errors.
I understand there is a lot of DNA testing going on the determine the connections of the various families. Unfortunately, there are no males in my branch who can be tested.
This is not conclusive evidence but are valid leads on who Abraham was and where he came from.

Here is an image of the 1900 census containing the family of John and Martha Garrison. The writing is not that great but you can make out names and dates. I am confident this is my Great-Great-Grandparents as son George is my Great-Grandfather. Plus, immediate family all agree on the names of the siblings listed.

Here is an image of a Marriage Record of my Great-Grandparents George and Lucy Garrison. Their record is at the bottom right. The Date is March 9, 1907. The minister writes the marriage was at the consent of John Garrison and in the Home of John Garrison.

Rena,

I'm so glad you replied. Thank You. If we are talking about the same John Garrison, then you and I are distantly related. John Garrison is my Great-Great Grandfather. His son, George Garrison is my Great-Grandfather. George's mother is Martha.

I would really like to know if we are talking about the same John Garrison. You say he died in 1898. I am looking at the Marriage record of George that shows George and Lucy were married March 9, 1907 with the consent of John Garrison, father of George, in the home of John Garrison. Plus, I have the 1990 census with John and Martha. So, if your John died in 1898, this causes me doubts that we are talking about the same person.

I truly hope we are talking about the same John Garrison as I would love to hear any stories you have and to have any picture. The 1898 date of death that I see on a lot of Garrison family trees simply do not match the census and marriage records I have.

I am attaching the only picture I have of John and Martha Garrison. By chance, is this the same John you are talking about? If so, do you have access to any more images you care to post?

Sincerely,

Terry

Sorry. I meant to add that in my original post but forgot. In every census record I found, he lists Tennessee as state of birth.

He lived in Missouri during 1850, 1860, and 1870.

He lived in Arkansas in 1880. Not sure in 1890. Census not found or is not available.

He lived in Arkansas in 1900.

In 1907, he was back in Missouri when son George Married Lucy Garrison (same last name, no relation, supposedly).

I cannot be 100% sure, but I think his middle name is Wesley or Westley.

I read an older post where someone mentioned their Great-grandparents had pictures of John and his brothers on their wall for years. I have not been able to confirm who his brothers were. But the older post mentioned William Abner Garrison and Joseph Delaney Garrison.

Thanks for the reply.

Terry.

I am seeking any photos of John Garrison. Census records show he was married 3 times. In 1850, he was married to Malinda. In 1860 he was married to Rachel, in 1870 and beyond he was married to Martha. There is a single photo of John and Martha that I have and that I see periodically in other trees.

Does anyone have any other photos of John? If so, may I have a scanned image?

Also, as a side note, in several trees, I see John's Year of Birth and Year of Death as 1821 thru 1898. But in the 1900 census, it shows he was born in January 1824. Plus, his name and consent is given to the marriage of his son, George in 1907. So he was around a lot longer than 1898. Just an FYI to anyone with John Garrison in their family tree.

Does anyone have any solid data that shows John's Parents and/or siblings?

Thank you for listening.

I wonder if the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah has a copy. They have an online catalog that you can search to see if they have the book. They will also have a phone number listed, I'm sure, that you could call and get information on if they have digital copies, how to get digital copies, etc. They have the largest collection of family history documents, books, etc in the world. So, they were my first thought. Good luck.

I got online and found the web site: https://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlc/

I wouldn't use the new beta site that it offers you can go to. Stay on this page. The option buttons are on the right.

I understand that it covers many Garrison lines one of them I am most interested in is Robert Garrison who married Betsy Good, Burke County, North Carolina.
Would gladly pay for a copy and would appreciate any help as I try and locate my GOOD family line of girls because after they were married tracking them is very hard.
I am also most interested in the entry that talks about her parents, Solomon Good and wife. They are my g/g/g/g/g/grandparents, any and all help will be appreciated.
Thank you,
Ila Good McKinney
