I know of a James Garvin, passed on a few years back, I don't know the date or exact year, but guess maybe around the early 1990s. He was a Black man. Do you suspect that he's a relative of yours?
garvinr1

Just reading the post, and I am a direct decendent of Joseph Garvin of Coosawhatchie, SC. I was told that there are some Devereux that are a direct connect to the Garvins. I was interested in seeing if there was any connection. Can you please respond to this or I can be contacted on my personal email of danitaadams@aol.com.

Re: Henry Garvin (Rev. War) Family Record

As several descendants of Henry Garvin review this list from time to time, may I add two new discoveries regarding Henry Garvin, Revolutionary War Soldier.

1st -- Henry's enlistment record has been known for many years ("A Roll of the 7th Pennsylvania Regimental Continental Line") PA Archives, V Series, Vol. 3, p. 252
[Henry Garvin, #133, enlisted 31st Dec'r '76 in Captain Parker's company] -- however, a search on Google Books turned up this reference:

"Size Roll, Second Company, First Pennsylvania Regiment of Foot" in The American Historical Register by Charles Henry Browning (Philadelphia: Historical Publishing Co., 1895), p. 1465

Name: Henry Garvin
Where Born or Residing: Ireland
When Enlisted: 1776
Where Enlisted: Ticonderoga
By Whom Enlisted: Capt. Lusk
Trade: Weaver
Age: 24
Size: Ft. In.: 5' 7 3/4"
Hair: Brown
Complexion: Brown

Previously, no specific record was known to show Henry's exact year of birth. This puts it at 1752.

2nd -- Henry Garvin's granddaughter, Mary Catherine (Garvin) Hoch (1833-1931) is credited with the report of her grandfather's death "around 1807" when he died from an unlucky fall into Antietam Creek, somewhere in the vicinity of the Franklin Co., Pa. and Washington Co., Md. line.

A second search on Google Books turned up a brief mention in the Appendix to the Journal of the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania -- Session 1814-15 -- Receipts and Expenditures in the Treasury of Pennsylvania, etc.
page 54,

"1814 -- Feb. 17 Paid Henry Garvin a sum equal to one year's pension, decreed to him by the board of inquiry on this day."

Following up on the lead, I have obtained a packet of photocopies from the Pennsylvania State Archives which includes a two page document:

Records of the Department of the Auditor General (Pennsylvania), Revolutionary War Pension File, 1809-1893 Series 2.60

Henry Garvin

Outside of folded document: 17 Jul 1816, No. 122, Henry Garvin, admitted

discharge del[ivere]d to Rich[ar]d M. Crain, Esqr the 13th Aug. 1818 to forward to Washington by H. Garvin to aid his claim for a Pension from the U.S. [later annotation]

On inside of folded document:

Waynesburgh, February 14th, 1815

I do hereby certify that I have known the bearer Henry Garvin for several years that he is a sober man and aged citizen but that he is now in low circumstance and is unable to make his Living and he hopes a generous Public will engable him to recover some favoer for past services as he spent his best days in the service of his contry (sic) from the year seventy-six till the close of the first war for the proof of which he has his Discharge to shew given under my hand. Wm. Bleakney

Henry Garvin swore before the Board in respect to his inability to earn a living and that he does not posses property sufficent to maintain him. [This annotation was made at the hearing that awarded Henry his pension]

----------------------

Second sheet

Waynesburgh, February 14th, 1814

Jacob Deerhart, Esqr.

Tis I make bold to recommend to you the bearer Henry Garvin who was an old soldier and is now reduced and unable to Labour for his Living and has no way to make a living only by his industry provided you would assist him when he cal[l]s on you he will shew you his papers and his Discharge and if he is intitled to any relief you can put him in the way to git his business dun, you compliance will be thankfully acknowledged by your

Very humble servant

Wm. Bleakney

------------------------------------------------------

Waynesburg, Pa. is located in Franklin County and this clinches the identification with "our" Henry.

It's probable that Henry's granddaughter's recollection of the cause of his untimely death is not inaccurate -- but what isn't clear is how long after his discharge was sent to Richard Crain to be included in a pension application -- that he died.

-- Richard Cochran, Big Rapids, Michigan

I am researching my boyfriend's Moriarty family tree and have been searching for info on his grandmother, Mary Garvin, who married his grandfather, Christopher Sylvester Moriarty, and then married her first cousin, Dan O'Leary. We have info about her from her marriage to Moriarty and after, but none about her roots. We believe she grew up in College Point, Queens, on a farm. We have a Moriarty tree on ancestry, but it is private. If you are a family member, would be glad to let you on.

I've got their death certificates and burial info but haven't found any intervening information. From his first marriage, he left a family in Ohio. Then with his second wife, he had a family in Missouri. He was the son of Robert T. Garvin, who was the son of William Garvin of Virginia and Ohio, who was the son of Hugh Garvin of Virginia. I have a book on this line that was completed in 2009-10. If you have any additional info on John in Missouri, I would love to share. Also, do you have any pictures of John and his second wife?
