I have a mourning broach that relates to a Henry Gaskell. The broach is gold with black enamel panels set with half pearls and diamonds. It's in the shape of a knot or a figure of eight, with acanthus leaf motifs. On the back there's an inscription commemorating the deceased, so the broach would almost certainly have been worn by someone's widow or daughter. The inscription reads: 'Henry Gaskell, obit 3 June 1849, age 70'. It's still in it's original, fitted box with the makers details - Dismore of Liverpool - on the inside of the lid. Oh, and there's some of the dearly departed's woven hair under a glass panel at the back of the broach. Can anyone confirm from the date of my man's death that he is the same Henry Gaskell that you're discussing in this thread?

This is truly fascinating. Henry Gaskell, 'The Devil of Wigan', died in 1849- according to records passed down through the family. He is a three-times great grandfather of mine. He married Jane Lomax, who was born in 1781, but I have no record of her death. HG had 5 children; his son Henry Lomax lived at the very fine Kiddington Hall,Oxon. I would be fascinated to hear any more details about the brooch- royanguschambers@hotmail.co.uk
My mother is a Gaskell. Henry Gaskell's [The Devil of Wigan] dates were 14/11/1778-1849. He married Jane Lomax on 01/06/1807.

His father, I understand from my family, was John Gaskell of Skelemersdale Hall, Lancs. He died in Skelmersdale in 1788- although I have not yet found any documents linking him to the property. I would be grateful if anyone has any more info on these 2 characters!

Gaskells in Ecuador

My mother's family hails from the Gaskell line in Ecuador.

The earliest I can trace back is a Carlos Gaskell born in the Liverpool area in 1809. I assume his name was originally Charles before he emigrated to Ecuador. He married Josefa Vera and they had two sons that I know of, my great great grandfather Carlos Gaskell (1834-1888) and his brother Roberto.

Is anyone else related to this line or have any additional information? I'd love to know who Carlos/Charles' parents and siblings were.

Dear Malcolm. Thanks for info. Will look forwards to hearing what birth cert says. I've not really given much thought to origin of name but your mother's idea sems feasible. They could originally have come from Gascony? Another of my rainow fmilies- the Vares posibly were originally De vere or deveraux and could have come to this area for the silk industry as macclesfield was a main silk centre and there were several little mills in Rainow. my mother and many of her family worked in the silk mils of the area. Regards. Margaret.

Dear Margaret, Your reply is very interesting. Thank you. William's birth certificate has his mother's maiden name as Wild but I have just found out that his younger brother John's birth certificate has his mother as formerly Bramwell. So that's interesting. Also you mention Rainow and that strikes a chord with my mother. So another stronglead. I will request the marriage certificate from 1864.

My mother thinks that the Gaskells were originally french huguenots. Have you had any such thoughts about your Gaskells?

All the best

Malcolm

Hi again. Done a bit more digging. I found an Elizabeth Gaskell on 1841 census at Clews head,Rainow with her mother Sarah b 1786. Also the marriage of Elizabeth to Daniel Massey in 1848 at prestbury- ref 1074/6/242 for CBMD. John was most likely illegitimate but still son of Elizabeth and daniel.Margaret.

hello Malcolm.I've done a little digging through my files. There were 2 John Gaskells round about 1839. The first was b 1835, son of Roger and Maria. The other which i think is most likely was b 1840 Sutton, Macclesfield son of Elizabeth who is married to daniel Massey on 1851 census at Marsh Cottage Rainow. John is described as visitor on this census. In 1861 described as son of Elizabeth and Daniel and are at 14 kerridge End Cottages, Rainow. The only marriage for a John and a Maria i can find took place in June Quarter 1864 at prestbury Cheshire BMD code :1074/16/397. Her surname given as Bramwell. Cannot find her or a Maria Wild on 1841-61ncensus es for Cheshire.
I did find John b1876 on 1881 and 91 censuse- he was on the next pages! In 1901 he was possibly a patient in the District Asylum at Cheddleton, Staffs. I could not find John and Maria in 1901 or their deaths 1891-1901 on FreeBMD although there is a John b 1840 Macclesfield married, retired road labourer in Parkside Asylum Macclesfield which would fit. Funnily enough one of my Laidlaw ancestors was clerk of works to the building of parkside.
perhaps you need to send for the marriage certificate of John and Maria to find out their parents. Hope this helps. let me know if I can help you further. Regards. Margaret

Hi Margaret,

I think John Gaskell was born about 1839 in Rainow, Cheshire and married Maria Wild? He's on the 1871 census living in Peace Street Hanley with Maria and Elizabeth (b. 1866), Maria (b. 1868) and William (my great grandfather, b. 1870). On the 1881 census they are still there but have added John (b. 1876). On the 1891 still there but no mention of young John.

Many thanks for your interest.

Malcolm

Best wishes Malcolm

My great grandfather William Gaskell was born in Stoke on Trent but the family believe that his father John Gaskell came from the Macclesfield area originally.
Please contact me at Geraldgraybrighton@yahoo.ca so that I can send you an invite to my tree.
If all the Addisons are from the same place then I have lots of info for you.
And some stories too.
Looking forward to getting to know you a little more.
I live in Brighton, Ontario. Addisons arrived at Montreal and some went to Boston and stayed while others returned to Montreal.
My family was broken and I know very little of the UK side of things. I await your contact.
Gerry
Brighton
