Good idea about obtaining the death certificate.
Been on-line this morning (WAY too much time researching). I found in ancestry.com the death certificate for Mary/Marie's daughter (my mom's sister who died in Illinois at age of 14 in 1922). Certificate indicates the mother's birth place as Serbia. So I have a birth place of Bohemia, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, or Serbia for Mary/Marie Gaspar/Kasper married to Henry Vocelka. A GOOGLE search resulted in finding a Bukovac in Serbia and also the following place: "Bukovac, Perusic, Hrvatska, Yugoslavia" which is the closest I have come to the "Spice Bukovec, Harvart, Jugoslavia " listed as the birth place on Marie Vocelka's death certificate in ancestry.com!!

I'm off-line for Easter.
Thanks for all your assistance.

You might want to request the death certificate yourself and see the handwritten [hopefully handwritten] place of birth for yourself.

Why did you write this: I would be very surprised if anyone in the line was Jewish. Is it because http://www.jewishgen.org/communities/loctown.asp
The JewishGen Gazetteer contains the names of one million localities in 54 countries in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

I, also, do not have a subscription to ancestry.com

For the birthplace of Marie Vocelka, I just go to ancestry.com. You will notice a banner across the top showing a number of links. Click on "search"/ third from left. Then click on "search all records". You will be given a screen to enter a name and other info. I just entered "marie vocelka" and got her death certificate (Henry vocelka is spouse). Place of birth is in the certificate.

I have no info yet on Uncle (My great uncle) Stevie's arrival manifest.

I would be very surprised if anyone in the line was Jewish. There were a mix of Catholics and non-Catholics in my parents siblings and spouses.

I don't have a subscription to Ancestry so can not view the document. I was hoping that you have seen the handwritten paper.

So there is a connection to former Jugoslavia.
Veliki Grdjevac could now be Veliki Grdevac, Croatia.

http://www.jewishgen.org/communities/loctown.asp
Velika Grđevas, Veliki Grćevac, Veliki Grđevac populated place 45°45' N 17°03' E E M U G Croatia 50.6 miles E of Zagreb 45°48' N 16°0' E

Voceljka, Cecilia Grdjovac, Hungary 17 1890 1907
Only she show up with this surname arriving NY EI.

In Croatia Mali Bukovec and Veliki Bukovec.
I would suggest requesting naturalization intent & petition as well as a church record to come to a correct place of birth for your ancestors. Have you located uncle Stevie's arrival manifest?

I do not have a document. I just have info from ancestry.com. Hate to make you work, since you have been so helpful. But if you go to ancestry.com/ click on "search all records" under "search" in top banner, then enter "Marie Vocelka" and Illinois for place. You will see an entry for Marie Vocelka's death certicate. (for me, the entry was the second one. spouse: Henry Vocelka)Marie's place of birth is listed as "Spice Bukovec, Harvart, Jugoslavia" And if you "view" the document, you will find that Marie's surname is "Kasper". GEEZ. Other documents indicate "Gaspar" So you were right-on in suggesting I look for spellings other than "Gaspar".

1.additional info from a search I just did on ancestry.com. My mother's brother (Joseph Vocelka) is in the 1930 census. Wife: Adeline and a baby. The entry indicates that Joseph's parents (my maternal grandparents) were born in Czechoslovakia, rather than Bohemia - makes sense given the year was 1930.
2.My mother's favorite Uncle was Uncle Stevie (Vocelka). They all lived in Berwyn, Ill at one time. I found WWII draft card and U.S. naturalization record for a Steve Vocelka. He lists his place of birth on the naturalization record as "Austria: Yugoslavia" and on the WWII draft card (in his handwriting!) as Veliki Grdjevac, Jugoslavia. And, yes, the two "Steve"s are the same person. Muddy waters!

I searched under the category "Immigration & Travel" in ancestry.com. Found no information. ancestry.com automatically goes to names with similar spelling/ so Kaspar / Gasper/ Kasper were covered. Also, if one enters Mary, "Marie"s will also show-up. Also, when I have entered "Vocelka", Vocelki, and similar surnames have shown up.Should I look elsewhere?

According to the Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947, she was born in "Spice Bukovec, Harvart, Jugoslavia".
She married Heinrick (Henry) Vocelka in Cook County, Illinois. They had 6 children. A daughter, Julia Vocelka, is my mother.
Questions:
1. desire info on the place of her birth ("Spice Bukovec, Harvart, Jugoslavia".
2. desire info on when she came to America.
Thank you for responding to my post. Unfortunatly i do not think there is a connection. My grandfather was about eight when he came over from Hungary and never went back. he was an industrial railroad worker and not a teacher. Plus he would be 99 years old today if he were alive. I am mostly looking for my grandfather's brother. He would be deceased now for sure at 104 or so. But he must have made a family of his own. They stopped speaking in the 40's and no one on my side of the Gaspar family has heard from them since. But I know I have cousins that i have never met and our family is small consisting of only 10 living members. I certainly appreciate your message. it reminds me that there is still hope of finding them. God Bless.

I dated a Hungarian named George Gaspar at The University of Missouri, in 1946,47,48. He taught Spanish at Stephens
College in Columbia, Missouri. He returned to Hungary in 48 and we wrote. He married and had several children, leaving Hungary then, disillusioned by the Communist government. I
saw him again in New York City in the '50's. I am now 83
years old and George, were he alive, would be about the same
age. Maybe there is a connection here. I have many old letters from him and photos. Marijane Meaker

My grandfather, came to the United States from Hungary when he was just a boy, about eight I think. This was pre the Great Depression of 1929 for the United States. He was born in Budapest, although I do not know if that was where he actually lived. Only his mother, father and brother came with him so there are lots of his relatives still existing in Hungary. If you have any other questions just ask. I'll tell you whatever I know. I am dying to find relatives in my grandfathers home country.

Do you think there is a chance that I have the names confused? Maybe I got them switched. I would have to confer with my uncle about details. It just seems very coincidental! I can offer a few more details. My grandfather married a woman named Marion Annette Thomas. They had four children who have had 8 children (me being one of them) If I can get more information I would love to confer with you further if you think there is a chance they are one and the same. There are only Their are only 10 living blood Gaspar relatives of mine alive, I would really really like to find the others.

My grandfathers name might have been different before he came to America. He was born in 1913 I believe and he came over as a small child so around 1920. In America he went by Joseph George Gaspar. His son (my father) is named George Joseph Gaspar. I cant even remember when his birthday was March 13. His brothers Hungarian name was Giza or Jisa or Jeeza or Geeza. Im not sure how it is spelled just that it sounded like Jesus or Geezer.

Hi. My name is George Joseph Gaspar. My family goes back that same route you mentioned, to Budapest I believe. My Grandfather, who recently passed was George Gaspar, he had a brother who was not in touch with the family. In fact i just found out at the funeral that he even had a brother! I had no idea there was more to the family. I don't know if this is at all related to what you are looking for, but how many can there be? Do you know a year involved with when they came to the US?

Hi,
even if your grandpa was born in Austria-Hungaria, its possible he might have spoken romanian. Austria-Hungaria covered very large area, much larger than todays Austria and Hungary. It included also Slovakia, Czech republic, parts of Romania, Croatia, Ukraine etc. Even today, there are some areas near romanian border where people still speak romanian. I would guess its mostly old inhabitants of the area, but i dont know. im from Slovakia and in the place where I live lot of people still speak or understand hungarian, because its so close to the border. In fact the place my grandpa was worn, which is now in Slovakia was Hungary then.

also my gg alice gaspar formerly alice grace married my great-grandfather elmer gaspar sr. and that is why she became a gaspar, but she was born a grace. my name is chablis kekua formerly chablis gaspar of nanakuli, oahu hawaii. my grandfather john gaspar was born at napoopoo, kealakekua bay to be exact. our family still owns the houses there at kealakekua, and continues to take care of the gravesite of our family members which is located near the bay. hope this is helpful, thanks for the reply.
