My great grandmother's name was Ruth Gaston 1890-1991. She was born in Nebraska. According to her soc sec application, her parents names were James Gaston and Mary Moseley. Supposedly, they were divorced sometime around 1900. As of this moment, I have not been able to find either one of the parents. I have a photo!...but not data. I've tried looking in the 1900 and 1910 census, and I cannot even locate Ruth.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Tina

Thanks for the link Bill! Your site says Margaret J. Gaston married Nathan James Emery (which was the information I was looking for). I found a few other sources and pieces of information that lead me to believe Nathan James Emery married Margaret Gaston. Such as, one of their children is named Lyle Gaston Emery..........I am almost 100% sure now Nathan James Emery married Margaret J Gaston :p

This would be a lot easier if the censuses before 1840 gave the names of everyone in a household rather than giving the name of only the head of the home.

Hope you are enjoying the New Year and thanks for the help!
Stuck on a few people, help greatly appreciated!

OK, so here is a good puzzler! A relative of mine started a tree a while ago.
(link below)

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/4013755/family?cfpid=-1661804...

I wanted to add on to the Emery side of the family. My relative who made the tree knows her great-grandmother was named Margaret Emery (as shown) who's husband was named James S Keefer (as shown). Margaret Emery had a father named Nathan James Emery (as shown), but know one in the family is able to remember Nathan's wife's name. After some research I found that Nathan's wife's name to "supposedly" Margaret J Gaston (Emery). I went on with my research and found Margaret J Gaston's parents: Robert and Ann Gaston. I then continued to fill out the Gaston family until the 16th century! I found the Gaston family to be easily traced because apparently they were quite wealthy in Scotland/Ireland. Anyways, I had some conflicting data involving Margaret J Gaston (Emery). On some family trees on this site it lists her as the wife of Nathan James Smith and also the daughter of Robert and Ann Gaston. But on an official looking site tracing the Gaston family, it shows Robert and Ann having only one child (named James). Apparently, on this site people list Robert and Ann Gaston as having nine (including James and Margaret). All the birth dates, names, and places of birth/residence match up fairly well with one another, it's just some claim Robert and Ann Gaston only had one child.

(Links below to show you what I'm talking about)

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/25616964/family?cfpid=1929647...

The link above is of a tree that shows Maggie (James S Keefer's wife) as being the child of Nathan James Emery and Margaret J Gaston. It also shows Margaret J Gaston as the child of Robert and Ann Gaston.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/645913/family?cfpid=-60877722...

Same with the link above....

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/2663267/family?cfpid=-1240362...

Now this tree above shows James as the only child of Robert and Ann Gaston. I would be tempted to say there could be two Robert and Ann Gaston couples from this part of PA, but all the ancestors seem to match up with one another.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&...

Above, this shows Nathan James Emery (N.J.) as the husband of Margaret J Emery. It doesn't show Margaret (Maggie) Emery as their child, but she should be their because Wallace is her brother.

I know this is kind of two questions and not very organized, but any help is better than none. Thank you for your time!

Wow! Thank you. You are a Godsend. Yes, I would appreciate any and all information you will be willing to share. This is my line: One of John and Rachael's son was Herbert. Herbert married Emma Fasse. One of their children was Clifford McCoy (my grandfather). Clifford married Frances Pientka. One of their children was DelMar McCoy my dad. Clifford and Frances lived in California until they were older and moved to Nevada. During the time they lived in CA, they raised their family. I with my family was raised in CA until we also moved to Nevada in mid 70's. About 10 years ago I actually moved back to PA with my husband and the younger children. I did not realized my family came from PA until I started researching a few years ago. As you know they came from more of the southwestern area. We live in the very northeastern area. This is all very exciting for me since I had hit a brick wall regarding John McCoy. Again, I appreciate you help. Any and all information I have (which I fear does not equal yours) I am happy to share. Have a great day and I look forward to hearing from you. If you wish, I will give you my private e-mail address - you might already have it.

I have a lot of information on John and his family. I wish I had my notes and documents with me, but they are at home (I'm currently at work). Without having the specific dates, etc. I can tell you that James and Jane Gaston (Rachel's parents) moved to Kansas (Johnson County) with John and Rachel. They bought some land from the indians, through the indian agent, and started farming. There was a law suit with the school district as to the ownership of part of the land, and the indians also sued claiming that the agent sold the land without thier permission. I'm not sure how most of that turned out. Johnson County had a bad fire and alot of thier records were destroyed. John and Rachel (not sure about James and Jane Gaston) moved to Clay Center, Kansas. John and Rachel were devorced, and John went with his daughter and her husband out west. On the way to California, John became ill and was left in a hospital in Greely Colorado, where he passed away. Like I said, I have a lot more info, death certificates, etc. If you would like. I even have a picture of Rachel Gaston McCoy. What part of the country do you live in, and how do you decend from John and Rachel?

Do you have any information on Rachel's husband John McCoy? Do you know why Rachel and John moved from PA? Do you know if they separated? Do you know anything more that may be of interest? To my knowledge, she had no immediate living relatives. I am looking for anyone who might know of a contact of Gwen's that could possibly provide information on what happened to the bible. I am interested in viewing the actual bible or pictures of it. I am the gr-gr-gr grandson of James Stout.

If the Gaston myths were fact, there would be clear lines to Catherine de Medici and back to Italy. Caution should be the leading word to information found. There is a lot of incorrect or inaccurate information regarding Huguenot connections. There is claim to a Gaston connection through an early Count of FOIX; another person with first name Gaston (and not royal family) who wrote a "how to hunt book" for those of royal status); supposedly a royal thread went from England, to Scotland then to N. Ireland or New Jersey.
Phillipe 18th did live in England with his wife who was a member of Spanish Royal family, but they did not go to Scotland. There was a duc d'Orleans who had the name Gaston, but that title is reserved for brother of the King and Gaston did not keep the title.

There are serious incorrect time elements and marriage connections in some of the supposed data. Check time of Huguenots and lifetime of Catherine de Medici. Wikipedia may be a quick source of accurate dates in history.

If documentation is produced somewhere, number would like to see it.

Regards,
Mairead

I am trying to find out more information about the Gaston family tree in Oregon and Washington. The farthest I've been able to go is back to my great grandfather, Raymond H Gaston. Raymond was born in 1895 (not sure where) and died in 1925 when he fell while building the Burnside Bridge in Portland, OR. He married May I Ehrshmier (sp?) b. 1898, d. 1976, with 3 children, Naomi "Muggy", Verna E, and Norman Ray (my grandfather b. 1922 d. 2007). I would greatly appreciate any information available surrounding Ray Gaston.

Jean Gaston, born 1600 in France was a hugonot and the story is that he was a member of the
Bourbon Family. There is no proof as far as I know. He left France and fled to Ireland where he lived out his life. His sons left Ireland, went to Scotland and then eventually America. Then due to a zillion Alexanders it gets confusing. My GGGG Grandparents were Alexander and Lydia Belcher Gaston. Then George,Alexander C., Ozro and finally, Robert which was the last to carry the Gaston name that had children in my line. We didn't have any first cousins. What is your connection? Also, It was Iowa, not Kansas.

Our Gaston DNA project can help settle some questions of this nature. We have discovered a mutation that appears to distinguish descendants of Justice John, and another for descendants of Hugh of Peapack. For other lineages we have some clues but nothing certain yet. We now have 40 members in the project, including Gastons from France and Spain. See this site for more information: http://planetgaston.pagesperso-orange.fr/en/NEW_20080526.htm

Craig Gaston
Sorry for the delay: have been ill.
What I knowof the Sourh Carolina branch of the Gaston clan was that one or two of five brothers went there from Conn. Three stayed in the N.Y. area, and one was father of a Governor of Boston, one stayed a farmer ( Alexander) in New York, which was my branch, and another went to New Jersey. If this if your line, I can send more detail.
I also learned later that a Hammond arrived on the Mayflower, and married into the Gaston family.

Sylvia, interesting that you said most Gastons in US are related. Would make it easier if this is true. My ancestor was Margaret Gaston,b abt 1728. I think her father was a John Gaston b. abt 1654 in Ulster Ireland. Margaret m. Andrew Kirkpatrick and I have found that the Gastons married a lot of Kirkpatricks. If you have any info on this branch, would greatly appreciate it.

Diane Snyder

Hello,

May I please have a copy of this?

I think most of the 'stateside' Gaston's are related, and most go back to Jean Gaston.

It would be wonderful to have anything further.

Where do you connect? I will be happy to share my Gaston info.

Thanks.

Sylvia

If it is not inconvenient for you, I would also like a copy of what you have on the Gastons, especially after they were in Scotland and were they in North Ireland, from abt 1660 ? My Robert Simonton, b. abt 1710, prob N. Ireland, married Margaret ?, we think Gaston. The Simonton family moved to then Rowan Co NC, now Iredell Co by 1754. Robert died in Rowan Co NC in 1788, the year before the area became Iredell Co (in the Statesville area). His wife Margaret, went to GA with her oldest living son Adam Simonton. Margaret died in Wilkes/Greene Co GA, 1791. Anxious to learn if Margaret, wife of Robert Simonton was a Gaston. Thanks...

I have info on Gaston's going back to cir1610 a birth of Jean GASTON who fled to Scotland in 1640& settled in Ireland between 1662 & 1668 He was the father of 2 son's. I have part of their descendants down to me. I also have a copy of a newspaper cutting headed "The name and family of GASTON" from the Doncaster Chronicle which give info on the GASTON's in France England & USA.There is no date on the cutting.
