I've discovered a good collection of documents back to about 1870, but when I search Ireland, I get no documents, only data with few details. I have a source for original documents from Scotland. Is there a web source for original documents from Ireland?

Thomas Gately married Ellen Flanagan in Padiham, Lancashire England in 1881. They had 5 children, Michael, Thomas, Maria, William and Bridget. William married Ann Mulrooney in Toronto in 1916. Maria was my Grandmother. Thomas' father was Michael and he may well have come from Rosscommon, the census just has Ireland unfortunately.
There were several family marriages in Padiham around the 1880s and a good few deaths! Any info please.

Sorry, those names do not ring a bell. I have found out that William Gately's parents were Mathias Gately and Bridget Kilroy. They may have come from Ballinasloe near Rosscommon. William had a sister named Kathryn and maybe a brother named Martin. That is nice you have a living granddaughter that will share stories.

Just started working on Gately's from Roscommon. Mine is Francis Thomas. Married Catherine Savage. 16 children scattered the globe. Two on the Lusitania, one daughter drowned and one son survived to immigrate to New York. Also an Austrailan connection. Ring any bells???.

I have found good records of my Gately ancestors here in the U.S. (Roxbury/Boston area), but I haven't been able to link them back to where they came from in Ireland. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Malachi (b:May 6 1782 Ireland d:Oct 18 1827 Roxbury, MA) was married to Catherine Connell in 1803 (b:Feb 2 1785 d:Feb 10 1876) and in 1812 brought Timothy(b:1804), James(1809-1896 Roxbury), and Bridget(1811-1823). In the U.S. they also had Catherine Gately (1814-1845) and Dennis Connell Gately (B:1816 MA - d:1896 Mamaronack, NY).

I have Mary Jane Gately, born in Ireland abt 1840.she married Peter Stearns who was from Athlone, Roscommon. Her father was Thomas Gately and her mother was Mary Quigley. Mary had a son Charles Francis who married Gertrude Anderson (who was born in Ireland) I've just started to put this all together so I can't tell if this info is of any help.

I was looking at the posts on Gately's from Roscommon, Ireland. My ancestor, William Gately also came from Roscommon and settled in Roxbury, MA.
I don't know his brothers or sisters. Perhaps those with the surname Gately on these post should do the ancestry.com dna test to see how we all are related. Only males can do these tests and it will show the dna marker of the Gately fathers. The DNA test went on sale around Christmas time and perhaps will go on sale again as it is expensive. Just a thought.

Stephen Gately, A singer with the Irish Boy band Boyzone

Stephen Gately,
a singer with the Irish boy band Boyzone who made headlines decade ago,
has died while on vacation in Spain, the group said on its Web site. He was 33.

Gately "tragically died" on Saturday while visiting the island of Mallorca, the band said in a brief statement. The cause of death was not immediately clear.

Gerald Kean, a Gately family friend in Ireland, said Sunday the singer died of natural causes, without identifying them.

"There's no foul play involved, and it's not suicide. It's just a tragic accident is what we've been told, and we're happy that that is correct information," Kean said. "There is nothing untoward. It's not drugs, we don't believe. It's not suicide. It's not murder. It's not a fight. That's what we've been told."

Kean said an autopsy was expected to be conducted Tuesday.

Gately and his partner Andrew Cowles, who were wed in a civil uni on in 2006, were in Mallorca together, the band's statement said.

"At present we don't have too many details," the statement said. Members of the group were expected to arrive at Palma de Mallorca international airport Sunday afternoon.

Spanish police said they were called to a house near Port d'Andratx on the western tip of the island on Saturday afternoon. The cause of death was unknown and there were no signs of violence, a police spokesman said, on condition of anonymity in keeping with police rules. He said there was likely to be an autopsy.

The house, situated on an exclusive tree-lined seafront street, overlooks a rocky bay reputed to have some of the best sunset views on Spain's favorite holiday island.

By midday Sunday journalists had begun to gather outside the quiet, seaside building with several vacation apartments.

Boyzone members Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch said they were "completely devastated by the l o ss of our friend and brother, Stephen."

"We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and were all looking forward to sharing many more. Stephen was a beautiful person in both body and spirit. He lit up our lives and those of the many friends he had all over the world. Our love and sympathy go out to Andrew and Stephen's family. We love you and will miss you forever, 'Steo'," their statement said.

Boyzone was a U.K. hitmaker in the 1990s and announced a comeback tour at the end of last year. Gately also had released several solo singles and appeared in stage musicals, including "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."

He revealed his sexual orientation to a British newspaper in 1999.

Elton John said Sunday that he and his partner, David Furnish, were "stunned by this tragedy."

"Stephen was the kindest, gentlest soul. We send our love and condolences to his partner Andy and to all his friends everywhere," John said in a stat e ment.

Boyzone was one of the biggest acts to come out of Ireland in the 1990s. Former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern said Gately's death was "a huge tragedy to Irish entertainment, Irish music and further afield as well."

"Boyzone and Stephen, they've all been part of Irish life and far wider than that, the last 15 years, and so successful, so it's a huge, huge tragedy. It's so sad," Ahern said.

Boyzone sold millions of records and topped the British charts with six No. 1 singles during the 1990s, including "All That I Need" and a cover of the Bee Gees' "Words."

The group was formed in 1993 by impresario Louis Walsh, who placed an ad in the press announcing auditions for Ireland's first boy band. Among the unsuccessful hopefuls was actor Colin Farrell.

I saw your post on the Gately's in Ireland. I have relatives that came from Roscommon, the house maybe west of Newtown which is a few miles north of Ballinasloe. My grandfater who was born in the US visted with his mom and sister for 6 months around 1910. A name he mentioned was Peter King but I don't have any details.
Anyway, the Gately's, William and Bridget (Kelly) settled in Roxbury. Please let me know if you could shed some light on my Gately's.

Debra, I am responding to your post of 2004 on Gately of N. Caro. and Tenn. Though Gately is not my direct line, I have some information on them. John Gately's wife, Jemima (Mime) Mercer, I believe (with no strong proof) is the sister of my John Mercer who was married to Lucretia Johnston and they both died in Caldwell Co., Ky. While doing research on the Mercer line I ran across an article in a No. Carolina newspaper that recounts the trial of James Mercer, Jemima's father, when he was tried for killing his son in law, John Gately. I have some Info on Sarah Frances Gately. In 1854 she married William Edward Boehme. In 1860 census lived in Sullivan Missouri, 1870 in Sangamon ILL, 1885, 1900 in Stafford KS. William Died in 2-4-1892, buried in Stafford. Have not found his burial, but found that of his son and son's family, William E Boehme d 1941, and Isabelle, d 1909.

My relatives were Macedonian-roumanians and their languages were Aromanian,Albanian,Turkish and Greek,because Albania was temporary occupied by Turkey and Greece(in different times).The great grandfather Naum Topali might have had his family greek,that emigrated in Korce-Albania because the persecutions made by the turkish occupiers,and great grandmother,Eftalia Topali,was macedo-romanian(aromanian)from the region Moskopole-Korce.Their children emigrated after years in USA and Romania.
The relatives I am looking for are my grandmothers(mother of mother) nephews.The informations I have are from my mother and grandmother(both are dead),and they couldn’t keep in touch with the relatives that have gone in other countries.
I inform you that I try to find my relatives that came to America and that arrived initially in BOSTON,MA and then spread in other states from the U.S.For this reason I have posted announcements on some boards,and I dared to ask for help at some persons that know how to search some public information.
I think we first must get informations for my aunt TOPALI that came in the U.S. and after that about the descendents,that if they live,they probably have other names.For this it is necessary for a site,at which the search of a person should be made having in consideration the name of the parents,date and birth place(KORCE or KORYTSA or KORCA) and the place were they are from ALBANIA ,TURKEY or GREECE, because ALBANIA until 1912 was occupied temporary by TURKEY and GREECE.
There can be helpfull the archives of the Orthodoxe Churches from Boston and documents of the macedo-romanian(aromanian) communities from Boston .

I have partially contacted the federal census records from 1910-1930,the EllisIslandFoundation@EllisIsland.org (Family History Center),Ancestry.com,rootsweb.com,and lots of other sites with search engines for persons and genealogic info’s.
I couldn’t acces the secret info’s from Ancestry.com,I couldn’t receive info’s from genealogical libraries,and from the Churches archives.
I have added announcements on many forums and I have worked with different volunteers.
I inform you that the dates about the family relations between James Topali,Tina Topali,WilliamTopali,Eleanora Topali ,David Topali,Antina Topali,Tina Topali,E.E.Topali,Anastasia Topali,Nicholas Topali,Fidelina Topalis,Nicolas Topalis,John Topalis,James Topalis,Traci Topalis,Laura Topalis,John Topali,Nina(Merrell) Topali,Philip Topali,Kathleen Topali,Helen Topali,Harry Poulakos I already had.
Nicholas Topalis, who married Fidelina (Deceased). Their children included Nicolas Topalis, John Topalis,James Topalis and Loretta Topalis who is now Loretta Castriotta;
2 of the boys married and divorced and then remarried.Laura Topalis was wife of John Topalis.Nicolas was living in Norwood . John living in Walpole and he is a co-owner of Bostonian Masonry Corporation. James is somewhere in the southern US.

After the searches made on the net I have seen that the only family posted in the Census Records from 1910-1930,SSDI and other official doccuments,of which dates(emmigration date,establishment in BOSTON,MA,origins,etc)would be similar to those from my relatives that emmigrated in USA,is the James Topali(Topalis) and Tina(PLOTINA)Topali family,that had as sons:William Topali,Anastasia Topali,Nicholas Topali,John Topali and Helen Topali(Poulakos) .From these I believe that alive are only Nicholas(81 years,in MA) and John(80,in GA). James Topali,born in 1878-1888,emmigrated from Greece-Turkey in 1916-1918,and lived temporary in Kings, NY and after that in Boston, MA,barber,decesed in 2.06.1943 in Boston, MA, or in oct. 1970, in Queens, NY.

To find out if between me and this family is a relation it is necessary to know what where the names of James’s parents.If the name is not Naum and Eftalia Topali it means that it is not any relation and it would be only a name coincidence.
I have sent e-mails and letters to all the TOPALI and TOPALIS(I found out that a lot of TOPALI changed names in TOPALIS)that are on the internet,without receiving any answers.
The name Topali(Topalis) is a relatively rare name on the net,and it is possible that lots of those with this names to be related,to know each other,or to be,still,in relation with the birth country,that was Greece.It appears that all named Topali became from a Topali family that lived initially in the region Athens-Thessalonikis from where they have emmigrated in the world.
I believe that usefull info’s about the family Naum Topali and their descendants could be obtained from the members of the Topali family that still live in Greece,that I don’t know and I can not contact them.Maybe you could help me in this way.

I am interested in the history of the TOPALI family and especially the situation of the descendents from USA that are still alive,and i would like to know the names,ages,childrens,adresses,etc.

Debra,I am responding to a posting of yours from back in Dec 04 ref: Gately family. One of my Cornelius ancestors, Madison Cornelius, b.in the early 1800's in S.C., married America Gately. A relative of mine told me a number of years ago that a Cornelius had married a Cherokee Indian named Gately. He also told me that they had moved from S.C. to Rome,Ga., then on to Oneota, Al. Do you happen to have any information on America Gately in your family records? I was also told that the name Gately is found amoung the Cherokee Indians in Cherokee,N.C. Patrick also served in the Military. This is all the information I have and I do not know where to look to find info on him. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thank you for any help!!!

I have just started putting together some famly history on my wife's mothers side of the family. Luke Gearley,Gatley,Gatalay. I have references from the 1850, 1880,1900, and 1910. The orginal Luke Gatalay was born abt 1815 in Ireland. His wife Margaret Quigley was born abt the same year also born in Ireland. The had three Children Mary 1843, John 1845 and Thomas May 1850. John Geatley(from the 1880 Census was born in New Orleans, LA abt March 1843. Married Bridget Barrett born Feb 1856, had two children Mary July 1878 and Margaret Nov 1879. Born in Meramec Township, Jefferson County, MO. In the 1900 cenus the names changer again to John Gately. with 7 more children. In the 1910 census the name change back to John Geatley . Did any of your GATELY ancestors work or travel on the railroads? Were any involved in train collisions or other mishaps? I have created a message board on Ancestry.com for U.S. Railroad Accidents. There is already at least one posting involving a GATELY.

PLEASE BE FOREWARNED THAT SOME OF THE NEWS ARTICLES ARE GRAPHIC in regard to horrible injuries and deaths. Railroading involved many dangers and gruesome tragedies over the years.

My Ellen Doyle came from Ireland, and stayed in Jersey City, New Jersey. I'm not exactly sure if she my gggrandmother. She was married to a John Gately and had a son Thomas born the same year as my Gately's son. It checks out but I have to get some proof.

John Gately is a decendent of mine, born 7/23/1810. He was the son of Patrick Gately and Bridget of Roscommon County in Ireland. Thats all I know. He Married Ellen M Gerry and they came to America before the potato famine. Could any one be relate to me, or have more information about my ancesters? Thanks

John Gatley is a decendent,born 7/23/1810 somewhere in Roscommon County Ireland. He married Ellen M Gately and came to America before the Potato Famine. Thats all I know about them. Could anyone be related to me or have further information. I also know that his fathers name is Patrick and mothers is Bridget. Thanks

Hi Marianne,

I am not 100 per cent sure, but I believe Charles (myggrandfather) was from Figh,Tibohine,Frenchpark. Also I am pretty sure his parents were Patrick & Brigid. He also had brothers Thomas & Patrick who migrated to Chicago & a sister Maria who stayed in Ireland.
