Can you tell me more about your Gardner Gates? I am researching Gardner Gates, son of Abel Gates and Rhoda Gardner, b 12 May 1796 in Colchester, CT. He married Lucy Ketchum in 1854 Rives, Jackson, MI. The last I find him is in the 1860 Census for Leslie, Ingham, MI with wife, Lucy, and son Aaron Abel.

Also, someone on the Gates list mentioned that there are Gates from Lancaster County, PA and maybe that was the Lancaster, not one in NJ.

I am descended from a Lancaster County Gates family. They were originally from Germany and were Getz. They changed their name as they migrated westward.

(1) David Gates is not a half-brother to Horatio. Horatio did have a half-brother but his name was not even Gates. He was a child by Hortio's mother from a first marriage.

(2) No one is even sure where David was born but most think it was in CT somewhere around 1750 or so.

(3) Not sure where Stephen was born.

(4) So much of the bad info on the Gates line come from William Dailey who published a book that had many mistakes in it.

David Gates is my 4th great grandfather through his daughter Sarah.

Darrell Holt
darrell9713@comcast.net

I'm looking for any evidence that the town of Lancaster, New Jersey ever existed. According to several family histories, David Gates's son Stephen was born there. No one seems to be able to produce any evidence that this town existed. Does anyone out there know where I can look? I am a direct descendant of David Gates through his son Stephen. David is my 4th great grandfather.

Hello Pat,

I agree about the naming patterns and I do feel that Joseph and John could be names of the fathers of both parents.

I have many Scotch-Irish ancestry that followed the naming pattern that most families in Northern Ireland followed. I also have Irish in my line that were Catholic that seemed to follow a similar pattern. There were various naming conventions in different parts of the country, not a one-size-fits-all system.

1st son named after paternal grandfather
2nd...........maternal grandfather
3rd........... father. 4th or more get anything.

1st daughter named after maternal grandmother
2nd............paternal grandmother
3rd.............mother etc.

This held pretty good up until about 1920 but there were always exceptions.

So the Joseph Gates that joined the 96th with Anthony could very well be possibly an older brother looking out for his younger brother. Joseph does run in the family. Can you give me info on what you have on Joseph please? What was his military number?

Anthony and Maria's son John may be named after Maria's father. Maria born in 1829 and the family records have in Tasmania. I have found the following Ward's in Tasmania before 1829 that could fit the bill:

1. In Tasmania newspaper - 28 July 1821. William Yordon Ward, esq. and a John Ward mentioned about letters received and waiting at post.

2. 20 feb 1824 - a William Ward (Almorah) received certificate.

3. 6 April 1824 - onboard convict ship Chapman. Alexander Ward and Joseph Ward. Both 7 years and different locations arraigned.

4. Dec 1817 - onboard convict ship Lady Castlereagh - Bernard Ward, John Ward, Thomas Ward. All received 7 years, all arraigned different locations.

5. 11 Sept 1819 - convict ship Dromedary - John Ward; 7 years, Middlesex

6. July 1818 - convict ship Lord Melville - Thomas Ward; 7 years, Middlesex

7. 25 July 1827 - convict ship Asia - Joseph Ward, 7 years, Warwick

There were 10 other Wards that arrived as convicts before 1829 in Tasmamia but they all had life or 14 years imprisonment and thought they did not fit the criteria to be able to marry and start a family by 1829. A couple of these men also were hanged or went back to England after a heroic act against Bushrangers.

This is a starting point on the Ward side to start narrowing down who Maria's patents could be. I would start with the Josephs and the Johns. After all, both parent's fathers could have had same first name.

Cheers,
David Eckert

G'day David & Oberon,
The latest researching I have on Anthony Gates is; a possible lead on his parents (not confirmed )source: www.Family Search.org.Ireland marriages,1619-1898
Joseph Gates marriage 18 October 1812 - Saint Munchin, Limerick,Limerick, Ireland
spouse Eleanor McNemara.
also;
same source Ireland Births & Baptisms 1620-1881
John Gates; Christening Feb.1830 Saint Michael,Limerick,Limerick Ireland residence; Lime,Ireland Thinking this could be a sibling of Anthony's
another thread;
Catherine Gates; Christening 4 September 1773 St Mary's Cathedral Limerick,Limerick, Ireland.
Thinking this could be the Grand mother of Anthony Residence ; Lime, Ireland
By the way the Marriage papers of Anthony & Maria Ward do not list the Parents names nor his Australian Death index 1787-1985 just death date ;15 September 1875 age 57 Reg.No. 2990 no mention of parents names.
Anthony did use "Old Irish Naming Patterns" in naming his children,Joseph Edward, John James,William,Anthony,George,William,Edward Tasman, reflecting this tradition(repeating William when 1st. William died in infancy)
Food for thought.
Best regards Pat

Hi guys,

My mum contacted someone in the UK about Anthony Gates' millitary records and got this response (should be of interest!):

Thanks for getting in touch with me and the information you have provided. The main source for 19th Century Soldiers are the papers of those discharged to Chelsea Pension. These are now available online at http://www.findmypast.co.uk. The records for Anthony Gates have survived and give his place of birth as Ballayhadereen, County Mayo (today it is known as Ballaghaderreen and is in County Roscommon). He enlisted in Dublin on 26th October 1836 – note the similar date to Joseph - as Private 1072 in the 96th Regiment of Foot. As regimental numbers were allocated sequentially it is likely that they existed together on the same day – though whether the 25th or 26th October 1836 impossible to say. They may have been brothers or possibly cousins. He was transferred to the 99th Foot on 1st February 1849 when he was renumbered as Private 2315 (each Regiment having its own sequence of numbers). The designation 1072/2315 is used in the Muster Rolls against transfers to show the numbers in the previous and current regiments rather than being a number in itself. Note also that 2315 was his number in the 96th Foot rather than the 12th Foot and in fact when he was transferred to the first battalion of the latter on 31st October 1855 he was renumbered again as 3622.

What is striking about these transfers are that they were probably voluntary and motivated by a desire not to return to Great Britain. Note the placements of these regiments

96th Foot

1836 – Ireland

1839 – England

1839 – New South Wales

1844 – New Zealand

1849 - India

99th Foot

1847 - Van Diemen’s Island

1856 – Ireland

12th Foot

1854 – Australia

1860 – New Zealand

This suggests that every time his regiment moved overseas, Anthony Gates elected to transfer to one staying on in Australia (closer research of their locations might pinpoint the location more closely). That makes me wonder if he was so motivated because he was married already and had decided to settle ‘down under’. There is no mention of his being promoted to Sergeant in these records. He was discharged at Hobart, where he intended to settle, on 31st December 1858.

We are not so fortunate with Joseph Gates. Given his date of discharge he would have been unlikely to have been discharged to pension and I can find no discharge papers for him. He will be found on the muster rolls held at the UK National Archives but they are unlikely to tell you much that you don’t already know. The surviving military records for this period are devoid of genealogical material (parentage, next of kin etc) and the answer to the relationship between Anthony and Joseph is likely found in any surviving parish records in the Republic of Ireland.

The records for pension paid overseas are available at Kew and may contain the date of Anthony’s death. That and these discharge papers aside I don’t think you will find much of help at the UK National Archives.

Cheers, Oberon (3x great grandson of Anthony)
G'day Again David,
Yes Anthony enlisted in the 96th. No.2315 in Dublin with a Joseph Gates ,who perhaps was a brother or cousin .
Anthony transferred to the 99th.Regiment of foot on 1st February 1849, No.1072. By this time he was a family man wanted to stay in Hobart town and then joined the 12th Regiment(No. 3622) for that purpose . The last few years of service he was at government house lieutenant Govenor's soldier at foot.
He was discharged after 21 years 67 days as a consequence of being unfit for further Military service.
regards for now ,
Pat

Pat,

Looking at Anthony Gates discharge papers I believe I know when his birth date is.....October 26, 1819.

On the second page of his papers it states at the top that he is under age from October 26 1836 - October 25 1837.....next line October 26, 1837 - begins his of age service......

He must have gone to Dublin on his 17th birthday and joined the 96th.

Just a thought but I am sure I am correct.

Also, I did find an article in the Courier in November 1858 that states Anthony Gates was a Sergeant in the 12th Regiment. It must be another Anthony Gates I guess but before I jump to that conclusion I would have to see muster roll of 12th to verify. Writer of article could also have jumped to conclusions that he was a sergeant.

David Eckert

Thanks so much. Great to see. If we next find his military records when he enlisted I am sure it might have information on his family.

Also another thought. Now that you know where he was born we could look at the church records for that village and see if they have his birth and baptism records.

Thank you again for sharing.

David Eckert

Hello,

My wife is also a descendant of Anthony Gates. I found the following that could be helpful.

nthony Gates entered into service with the British Army with the 99th (Lanarkshire) Regiment sometime about 1839 when the regiment was stationed in Dublin. Before that the 99th Regiment was in Mauritius from 1825 to 1837. He was married in 1847 and to be married in the British Army while in the ranks a soldier needs to get permission from his commanding officer, have 5 pounds saved, served a minimum of 7 years and have a good conduct certificate. He served in the 99th until October 1855 when he was one of 193 Volunteers to transfer to the 1st Battalion, 12th (Norfolk) Regiment. At this time he is a Sergeant. Anthony would discharge from the 1/12th Regiment sometime before 1867 when the regiment returned to England.

The best place to look next if you want to find possible parents would be to look into his military records....when he joined the 99th in Ireland. It could give quite a bit of information.....

Cheers,
David Eckert

Hi Marie. Oldham (Sr.) lived 1716-1798, and died in the Wilmot area. The Amos we mentioned, who married Margaret Larlee in 1792, was Oldham's son, born about 1768 in Annapolis County, but last seen over in Woodstock and maybe Kent or Lower Wakefield, in New Brunswick, in 1825 and 1827, respectively.

What is your Gates paternal line? Is it from the long-time Annapolis/Kings Counties family? My great great grandfather was also an Amos Gates, one of Oldham Jr.'s grandsons, both of Port George and Margaretsville.

I have a love letter dated 1840 from an Alonzo Newell to a Fannie (Frances) Dike who my research says became his wife. Would you be a direct decendent? It was mailed from Birmingham Ohio on July 29, 1840 to Fannie in chesterfield, Athens Co Ohio. The letter is complete although old and worn. I can be contacted at jimjohandes@gmail.com If you are interested please contact me asap as I don't tend to keep these old documents long.

Warmest Regards,

Jim Johandes

Hello!

I'm looking for the parents of a great-great-great grandmother, ELIZABETH MARY "LIZZIE" GATES. She was born on April 11, 1861 in AL and died on April 13, 1951 in Childersburg, Talladega Co., AL.

She married on December 8, 1878 in Tallapoosa Co., AL to WILLIAM ALEXANDER CALDWELL, born on October 15, 1857 in Tallapoosa Co., AL and died on February 9, 1921 in Talladega Co., AL.

Their children were (in no particular order) EULA EVELYN CALDWELL, JAMES DALLAS CALDWELL, CORA LEE ELIZABETH CALDWELL,CLAUDE MITCHELL CALDWELL, FRED EUGENE "FREDDIE" CALDWELL, VIRGIL CALDWELL, CLIFTON CALDWELL, and BENJAMIN FRANKLIN "BEN" CALDWELL.

Several people have suggested in the past that her parents were probably BENJAMIN GATES and EVELINE WILLIAMS, but their only child born in 1861 was a daughter Margaret, and I've found nothing which indicates that Elizabeth was ever called this name.

Elizabeth doesn't appear in the 1870 or 1880 AL Censuses.

The 1900 AL Census says her parents were both from AL.

The 1910 AL Census says her father was from GA and her mother was from SC.

The 1920 AL Census says her parents were both from SC.

The 1930 AL Census says her father was from GA and her mother was from SC.

Elizabeth's death certificate doesn't reveal any identifying information regarding them, and she didn't file for Social Security.

If anyone can be of assistance, I'd be very grateful. This is but one of several "brick walls" I've run into on my mother's side that I'd like to break through.

Jacob Carpenter
jacobcarpenter@zoho.com

Stephen Gates was born 1750 at Suffolk Co., NY, served in the Rev. War, married Eve Young in 1770. He died in 1837 in Schenectady Co., NY. He had a son Stephen born 1785, married Hannah Lewis in 1809, died 1850. I believe this is the line my Hannah belongs to. But, I haven't been able to find any definitive proof. Also Stephen Gates, is listed in the Schenectady Census for 1840, a few lines below Cornelius Vrooman, the father of Eldert Vrooman whom married Hannah Gates.

Hello again, I looked in my records and found 1 Ann Gates, born 1625 to Stephen Gates and Ann Veare, this is my line and it goes that Ann daughter of Stephen and Ann married a John Chew, now if you Hannah (Anna) was born in 1825 that would be two hundred years to late to be the daughter of Stephen Gates and Ann Veare (some folks have Hill and these are one and the same person) I looked down through the descendants of Stephen and Ann and there are no other Stephen's in that line that has a child born in 1825. Most all the Stephen and Ann's children were either in Massachusetts or Connecticut, I could not find any that was in NY. Write to me at my e-mail with all the data that you have and where it was obtained and I will see what I can possibly find.

I am also trying to locate Robert Cady Gates. He replied to a query I listed in 2003 on genealogy.com. My question was about Hannah (Anna) Gates born 1825, Schenectady, NY m Eldert Vrooman bef 1843, d 2 Dec 1870, Watervliet, NY. She was the daughter of Stephen Gates, but I haven't been able to determine which one. Robert had circumstantial evidence that she was possibly the daughter or granddaughter of Stephen Gates (1750-1837), son of Stephen and Ann Gates. He lived in Schenectady, near where Anna and her children lived. I want to start working on this line again and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
See copied there, 1900 census for John GATES and Ida.
Also near them is a family of HOLLY/HOLLEY.

Are they Ida's parents?

their son Elmer seems to have married Bonnie REESE.
They had dau Wilda who married Joseph A GUTMAN.
Joe GUTMAN is the contact name for Elmer on his WW 1 and 2 draft card registration.

Was just curious if this GATES line may be part and parcel who seems to share a Common Ancestor, through DNA testing with my MILLS descendant. Shows as 21 generations distance.

Posted on the DNA section on www.ancestry.com.

Patricia
cw
It looks like we're related through Immer Crittenden who is my G- G- G- G- Great Grandfather. His son Noah Parkhurst Crittenden, brother of Alonzo Crittenden, died on Lake Erie when the steamer "Erie" sank. He sold his farm in New York and emigrated his family to Michigan and died on his return trip. As for information on Maria Humphrey, that I don't have but will be researching through part of that lineage as it is family. If I come across anything I will keep you posted. There is information readily available within these message boards on Immer Crittenden and Experience Whitney.

Do you know of any other siblings of Alonzo and Noah? As of now I have those two.
Thank you - My strategy of indirect approach seems to be working. After you gave me the information I found Experence Whitney in the same cemetery with her husband Immer Crittenden. Their son Alonzo Crittenden married Sarah Gates. Sarah was the daughter of Daniel Gates and Maria/Mariah Humphrey both buried, near his parents, Aaron Gates and Anna Scott, in Butcher Cemetery, Seneca, Ontario Co., NY. Do you happen to know anything about Maria, his wife? Parents? Marriage? Siblings? Any ideas? I do appreciate your help. dave.richardson@mindspring.com

Dave,

Don't know if anyone has given you a hand with this yet, but this is a link to Immer's grave in Ontario County, New York. I am related to Immer through Noah Parkhurst Crittenden who died in the steamer fire on Lake Erie. I can offer a little more as I am still digging through the archives myself.
