Hi, I would like to trace my family history and I am trying to find family members related to my grandfather. Unfortunately my grandfather's father died when he was very young, so we don't know much about him father. If you think you may be connected, I would love to find out more.

The John Gathercole you refer to may be the same as the one in my family tree. He was born in 1738, and married Elizabeth. They had a son called Henry born Jan 1767 who married Martha Haw(e)s in Goderstone, Norfolk in 1795.
Sue

Hello Sue(?),

Many thanks for your post. It is strange that you should be descended from John GATHERCOLE -- I have later information about all of his siblings, not know nothing about him. Can you tell me when he married and died?

As to the siblings : (Selina) Fanny was buried 1936 East Norton. Mary Elizabeth buried 1850 Tugby (infant). Adeliza was buried 1906 Leamington, having had 4 illegitimate sons. Alma married Frederick BATCHELOR 1887 Paddington. Elizabeth Hannah married Henry SCARROTT 1883 Leamington. Henry died 1891 in London -- has 2 children on one census, but can`t find his marriage. George Hennels married Esther Jane KEARTLAND 1887 Warwick -- had at least 6 children. Robert Payne married Ellen JELLEY 1887 Warwick -- had at least 5 children.

If you`d rather e-mail me direct, my address is : PLL5@hotmail.com

Thanks for your reply. I haven't managed to get any further back than John and Mary Gathercole of Didlington either. But I did find their gravestones at Alexton church which are very well preserved. My late father's grandfather was John Gathercole b. 1854 Tugby, eldest son of Hennels. Interestingly, it seems John was brought up and educated by Elizabeth and George Payne (See 1861 Census).Elizabeth was a schoolteacher.
Many thanks for your reply. My late mother`s great-grandfather was Thomas PAYNE (1821-1899) of Tugby, Leics. His brother George PAYNE (1826-1910) married Elizabeth GATHERCOLE on 31 Jan 1850 at Tugby -- and his sister Mary Ann PAYNE (1823-1884) married Hennels GATHERCOLE on 12 Aug 1847 also at Tugby. I can go back to the parents of Elizabeth & Hennels -- John GATHERCOLE & Mary HENNELS married 12 Jan 1819 at Didlington -- but then get stuck. There seem to be 2 couples having children there around the time of John`s birth, but no trace of his baptism -- they are Henry GATHERCOLE & Martha HAWES and James GATHERCOLE & Ann MANNING.
I have 8 children of John & Mary GATHERCOLE (7 of them baptised at Allexton, Leics) and 9 children of Hennels & Mary Ann (6 baptised at Tugby). Also some details of their descendants in the Leamington Spa area up to the early 1900s.
Any more information most welcome!

Hi Kay,

Not sure if this is any help or not but Edward Gathercole and Mary Shinn were supposedly my great great great great grand parents - i.e they had a son Edward (married Sarah McDonald) who in turn had a son Albert (married Winifred Perks) who are my fathers grandparents. We would appreciate any information you may have on this family as we have also come to some dead ends. My dad lives in NZ and has family photos of Edward and Sarah and would be really interested to hear from you. Please feel free to email me at stollerys@bigpond.com.au or my Dad Russell Gathercole-Smith at robynandrussell@hotmail.com. Look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards Rana

Looking for information on my father's family - Gathercole. Father was born in mid-40's Iowa, Des Moines. One older sister. His father "died" when he was a baby and he was sent by his mother to live with a grandmother, possibly great-grandmother.
My granfather died young, reportedly of congestive heart failure, some kind of genetic issue from birth - not sure how true this is. Also aware that my father could have been told this story and that his father may have been living all this time.
Wish I had more.

I'm searching for clues - dates and names - for this Gathercole or Gathercoal family. Jane was Christened on Aug 2nd 1786 at Newmarket's St. Mary's Church, Suffolk, England. Her parents are listed as Richard Gathercoal and Anne Holden. Jane later married John Waters and their daughter - also Jane - married Thomas Fordham. I'd love more info on this Gathercole family, perhaps marriage dates or dates of birth and parents for Richard and Anne - anything would be appreciated. Thanks - et

Age given as 47.

William & Celia marriage banns 25 Jul 1811 Rotherhithe, William registered as William Junr. The same info is on Pallot's Index. I also have copies of WJR's siblings baptism registrations.
_________

I have also worked out the following:
Robert and Elizabeth Gathercole had the following children (from LDS)
Celia born 1783 Rotherhithe, London/Surrey - married William Phillips - she is mentioned twice in Robert Gathercole's will (as his daughter). I can send you a copy.
Harriot - no trace - still alive in 1827 (father's will) but no trace after this
Susanna - present until 1851 census (was living with sister Ruth) not married
Ruth - died prior to 1793
James - not mentioned in father's will in 1827 - presume deceased previous to this
Ruth - still alive in 1861 England census - died 1864 unmarried
Benjamin - still alive in 1827 - in father's will - unable to trace
_______________________________________

Send me a message and we can swap info!

cheers
Ant.

I have a Benjamin Gathercole born Oct-Dec 1883 Wandsworth who is the 13th child of Edward Gathercole and Mary Shinn. I am working on this extended branch of the tree at the moment due to another enquiry and found this thread. This Benjamin Gathercole was baptised St Annes Wandsworth the same day as 2 older siblings on 21 August 1887, and I have him on the 1891 census living with parents at 9 Sandown Place, Wandsworth. I have been trying to find his marriage and came to a dead end.
Edward Gathercole bap 1833 Eriswell SFK
can email privately at fortyeighters@bigpond.com or kay.sturgeon@gmail.com
Kay

Hi

I'm looking for any information regarding Benjamin Gathercole, born in Wandsworth about 1882, who married an Amelia Emily Westlake, with whom he had 8 children. From information given years ago, from Father in Law, who said he was 16 of 17 children with twins. I can only trace the 8 with Westlake, we do know there was a Florence, half sister, but have no other information.

So if any information regarding Benjamin, his 1st wife or even his father and mother would be greatly received, as we hav come to a dead end.
regards
Shirley

Is anyone researching John GATHERCOLE & Mary HENNELLS married at Didlington (Norfolk) in 1819? Their children, including Hennels GATHERCOLE, moved to Leicestershire (Allexton, later East Norton & Tugby) and Leamington Spa (Warks).
Census returns state that John was born in Didlington, but there is no baptism for him there.

I'm just starting out on this Gathercole business! Mine are from Rotherham, Yorks. My great-grandfather was Leonard (he was a grocer) as was his son. My grandfather married Annie Kathleen Laurence (of Doncaster.) Both lived 1904-1973. They had 1 child, my father Peter (1927-2006). I would love to know more, especially the links among all the Gathercole "clusters."

Hi paula
i had a word with my now ex husband last night about his half brother Wilfred Frederick ( known as Freddy) . He told me he remembers visiting him at his home in Hull when he was about 11/12 so that would have been around the year you were born . He tells me he was with a lady called Trisha ( possibly Patricia) is this your mothers name ?. He cannot remember much about the children he only visited maybe once or twice (his father Gin as he was known ) and the children from his first marriage were not close , due to the marriage break up.I do have a copy of freddy's birth certificate , he had a brother called David and a sister called Pauline .
Please feel free to contact me on my hotmail address bettyboop2711@hotmail.com , this is also my msn id .
I hope i can share the little info i have and look forward to hearing from you .

Lorraine

hello
thank you for replying. i do think that the person who you are talking about could well be my father. what you said about the woman he was living with, that would have been around the time he and my mother seperated and im fairly sure he left her for a woman who had children. also what you said about the haulage company definatly rings a bell as when we were all living in hull, he worked in haulage. so it definatly sounds like it could be the same person. id be very interested in infomation you have. do you know any of his children?
again many thanks for replying
paula

hi paula
So sorry it has been so long in my reply ... i have not been able to access this email account for quite some time .
It is possible that your father Wilfred frederick Gathercole is related although i cant be 100% sure on this . My husband has a half brother named Wilfred Frederick , i last knew him to be living in biggleswade ,but that was in the late 70'searly 80's , he was then with a lady named Shirley , who had 2 daughters Elaine & Maxine( her girls not his), i know he had other children too . I have not been in contact with him since this time , but he was running a haulage firm out of Ipswich ( named Gathercoles Haulage) , im not sure if any of this rings any bells ,there are other family members .If any of this rings any bells or is of interest to you please let me know , i would be glad to share any info i have .

Regards

Lorraine

I Know your post was 5yrs ago,but I am tracing Gathercoles, and I have an 1871 census with John & Hannah G. living in Norfolk. The 1881 census shows they moved to Yorkshire.71 says they had a daughter Florence age 6. Then 81 says Daughter Harriet age 17. What intrigues me is that in 1879 a Harriet Gathercole was a domestic and had a baby Mary Lizzie in 1879 (my wife's Gran). No Father on B/cert. Can you shed any light on this, Would your Wilfred be a bro. of John G.
interested to know you thoughts. Hm 1633

I have in my ancestry a James and Judith Gathercole, born about 1844 for James and 1875 for Judith. Judith was Hubbard prior to marraige. they had several children, and one daughter Sarah Ann had several more children and continued to live with the family. No father was mentioned so perhaps Sarah Ann married a Gathercole and he passed away. One of Sarah Ann's daughters was my great great grandmother Martha, wife of robert Flatt of feltwell. I beleive Martha was born in Feltwell and lived there until about 1880. If you see a connection please contact me. Thank you, Dorothy green
