Dear Janet
Thanks for your message. Maybe you could email me direct via tom hyphen handley at zen dot co dot uk? I'm trying to get details of the first Gautier (Pierre Louis Snr) who came to England from France. I've yet to find a distant relative who's got any further back.
Are your Handleys Sheffield-based? If so we're related twice!
Thanks again for following this up. Look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Tom

Dear Tom,
I read your message in Rootsweb, I am the Grt. granddaughter of Francis Herbert Gautier. I would be very interested to hear from you as I have a few photographs of the Gautier Family. If you have any particular questions I will try to answer them. I also have Handleys' in my family tree.
Dear Chris
You know more about him than I do. He was my great-great grandfather on my father's side. I have him in Doncaster too, and the spouse Mary Ann, from Hull (with the same question mark).
I did a trace and found PLG born in Paris that would match. But going international is a whole load of work, and I'm too busy these days to chase it up. Something I'm keeping on the back-burner for retirement!
If you have any photos of Fanny that would be great. I have no pictures of any of the Gautiers, but our family are blessed with particularly French noses.... I'd like to see if there's a resemblance....
Thanks for being in touch. I'll set aside some time to search a bit more sometime. Do keep in touch if you find out anything more.
Kind regards
Tom
Hello Christina,

Thanks for your reply. I am not sure if you received my email, but I descend through William Hart's son Thomas Jefferson Gautier.

I am enjoying learning about Thomas Nicholas Gautier. Are you familiar with him bringing the first steamboat to Wilmington?

I saw one tree where he is listed with two wives, which I am thinking is correct because of the age of Joseph R. Gautier.
Can you tell me who Ann Rosalia Gautier was? perhaps the first wife of Thomas N.?

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GSln=G...;

Look forward to hearing more from you.

Tony Hargrove

Tony - William Hart Gautier is my ancestor also. He was born 16 May 1822 in Wilmington, New Hanover County, North Carolina & died 12 Jun 1907 in Duke, Harnett County, North Carolina. He married Catherine Ann Tyson - Gautier on 10 Jan 1851 in Bladen County, North Carolina. She was born 19 Oct 1833 in Bladen Co and died 17 Jul 1913 in Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina.

How are you connected to this line? I am through Rebecca Eliza Gautier - West.

You are 100% correct. William Hart Gautier's parents were:

T.N. (Thomas Nicholas Boudet) Gautier and Eliza (Elizabeth Ann) Brown - Gautier. TN was ships Captain you know him to be. My notes indicate he was born between 1764 - 1767 (Thomas Nicholas Gautier was Christened 01 APR 1767 at St Michaels Church in Bristol, Gloucester, England. Parents are Peter and Ann Gautier .... & Dictionary of North Carolina Biography, Provided his yob as 1764.)

TN's father was Peter (Pierre) Boudet Gautier b. 1729 in Arles, France. Died 11 May 1791 in Bristol, Gloucestershire County, England, U.K.

I've never managed beyond Pierre and Ann. You?

Christina
flpacrat@bellsouth.net

Does anyone doing research know of a possible connection between a Walter Gautier (b. 1858) and Catherine Ikerd Spradley( b. 1855)? Walter and his family resided in the Jackson County MS area close to Catherine, who was a housekeeper, most likely his. A family researcher has suggested that there was a child from these two born possibly in 1878 or 1879. If any Gautier researchers know anything about this, could you please contact me? Thanks. You can email to sebrina999 at yahoo

Thomas Nicholas Gautier (Boudet) Eastern NC - Confused

I believe I have made progress on my earlier post on William Hart Gautier (1822-1910) married to Catharine Ann Tyson. Through other posts here and elsewhere I believe that his his parents are Thomas Nicholas Gautier and Eliza Ann Brown. I believe this is the same Thomas Nicholas Gautier that was commander of the United States naval forces at Wilmington, N.C., 1808-1813.

I also feel that his parents were Pierre Boudet - 1729-1791 (who changed his name to Peter Gautier after fleeing France to England to avoid religious persecution) and Anne Manson.

I felt comfortable about all of this till I saw Thomas Nicholas's Grave on Find A Grave:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ga...;

His dates are 1764-1848. These dates jive with the collection of papers donated to UNC which mention his dates:

http://www.lib.unc.edu/mss/inv/g/Gautier,Thomas_N.html

Now for the confusion. I had his dates, from Ancestry.com, as 1780-1854.

I also found who I though was his son William H Gautier, in two 1850 Census's:

1850- Living in Wilmington with E.A. Gautier b abt 1805 , who might be Eliza Ann his widowed Mother.
1850- Living in Bladen with the Tyson family of which he married Catharine Ann Tyson who is in that household

If anyone can help me figure out my William H Gautier's ancestry I would appreciate it!

Tony Hargrove
Dear Robert
I've been doing my family tree. Turns out FHG was one of the sons of my great-great-grandfather, Pierre Louis Gautier.
Fascinating to make the connection to your information. I hadn't found FHG, since he was the last child to be born and didn't appear on the census till 1881.
Feel free to look at my tree and use as you see fit.
I am researching for a friend and his 2nd cousin is Christopher Melvin Gautier, son of Melvin Thomas Gautier and Pauline Glenda Welch, grandson of Norman Thomas Gautier whose children included Fonnie, Ethel, Melvin, Dorothy & Cecil.

I am particularly interested in anything about Melvin & Pauline. Melvin married Pauline Glenda Welch in England in 1945, crossed the Atlantic at least 3 times on passenger ships, had 3 children and divorced. Melvin married Alice and died about 1990. Pauline married another American in 1972, Harry W Beale. Harry died a year later.

Tony

Melvin & Pauline Gautier

I am interested in hearing from anyone who knows anything about Melvin & Pauline Gautier and their descendants.
Melvin Thomas Gautier born 31Aug1924, NC, USA; died 27/8Jul1990 California/Texas/elsewhere, USA

Pauline Glenda Welch, born 29Jan1927 Shrewton, Wiltshire, England. Possibly died Sep1988 Dudley, England.

Pauline & Melvin were married in 1945 in Maddington, Wiltshire, England.

Melvin was in the US Army. An entry in Stars & Stripes relates how after returning to the US, Melvin gave up waiting for Pauline to come over, re-enlisted, and was posted in Europe just as Pauline arrived in the US with their first child Juanita.

Passenger lists list Pauline travelling with up to 3 children, Juanita, Rosemarie and Chris[topher]. The passenger lists seem to be the only mention of Rosemarie - unable to trace a birth in US or UK so far. Where was she born and what happened to her?

Did Melvin & Pauline return to UK and have four more children in the Birmingham/Solihull area?
It seems like they must have divorced; Melvin appears to have married Alice, found Melvin & Alice's headstone posted to this group earlier.

Pauline possibly then married Harry Beale in Shrewton, Wiltshire, England about 1975 which would be about a year after her father Cyril Henry Welch died.

Anything anyone can add would be appreciated.

Tony

Emilio Gautier- Puerto Rico

I am trying to track down information on my fathers side of the family with great difficulty. My great-grandfathers name was Emilio Gautier and he married Aurora Rentas. As far as I know they only had two children: Rafael Gautier Rentas who married a woman by the name of Tere (they resided in NY for several years before moving back to P.R.) and my grandfather Jose Emilio Gautier Rentas who was born 6/2/1921. He married Daisy Leon Rodriguez. My grandparents lived in Puerto Rico all their lives. If anyone has any information on any of these people I would greatly appreciated it!

As a child I was always told that we were distant relatives of Jose Gautier Benitez- the famous Puerto Rican poet and also of the husband of Felisa Rincon de Gautier- the first woman Mayor of San Juan. I would really like to be able to prove or disprove this.

Attached is a picture of my greatgrandparents- Emilio and Aurora Gautier

Fernando Upton Gautier 1822 - 1891

MOBILE DAILY REGISTER - 12 DECEMBER 1891

DEATH OF MR. GAUTIER

That old and respected gentleman died at his residence in West Pascagoula (MS), on Saturday, December 5, after a brief illness, aged seventy years. His funeral took place on Sunday evening and was attended by a very large concourse of relatives and friends from Scranton, Moss Point, Pascagoula, Mobile, New Orleans, and the intervening towns, who reached there by rail and the tug boat Eva. His remains were interred in the family graveyard at that place. Mr. Edgar Hull performed the burial services in a most impressive manner.
Mr. Gautier settled at West Pascagoula about twenty-eight years ago and engaged in the sawmill business, which he successfully conducted ever since.
He was a man of the most active habits, and noted for the excellence of his work in any line of business to which he gave his attention as a mill man, a farmer, and a boat builder. In the last mentioned he acquired the reputation of constructing some the fastest pleasure yachts that ever entered the regattas, which have taken place along this coast, was most hospitable towards all who visited him in his beautiful home, and generous, charitable, and kind in his actions. He leaves a widow and a very large family of children and grandchildren to mourn his loss.
After the funeral, the tug Native, Captain Henry C Urie, with the schooner Maggie in tow, brought back the attendants to Scranton.

Not my family, just sharing from the newspaper archives of the Mobile Public Library.

By 1790, they were in Beaufort County, North Carolina. They were mainly Sea Captains and Sailors.

Joseph, Sr. was probably born about 1755 to 1765.

I have been researching the names on a memorial in Sheffield Cathedral which remembers the policemen and firemen who fell in the Great War 1914-18

The result of this research is on my website http://www.stannington.webitsmart.co.uk/ in the 'Sheffield' section. There are details relating to Francis Herbert Gautier and his family. He was a policeman. He was buried in a local cemetery in Sheffield, England.
Can anybody tell me more

Kind regards

Robert.

Charles,
Thank you for responding. According to the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, your grandmother was 6 years old and the youngest child listed for Thomas GAUTIER (born about 1830) and Mary J. GAUTIER (born about 1835). Her brother John Thomas GAUTIER was our ancestor. Would like your input and will reciprocate.
