I'm not sure if I wrote to you...it's been awhile since I've gone through all of this. This is probably going to be all over the place.

Going through my mother's baby record. There listed was:

Eva F. (Gayle) Weekes, my grandmother, b. 12/9/1919 in Sumter, SC (she died 12/1980 weekend before XMas)

Benjamin Gayle (my great grandfather) was born in Wedgefield, SC and his wife Lula (Jennings) Gayle, my great grandmother, born in Bishopville, SC.

Both Lula and Eva are buried together in NY (though Lula is named "Lola" on the headstone and my grandmother remarried to a "Payne").

Also in my mom's baby record is a signature on a gift registry from a Lelia Gayle.

That's all I have, I know it's not much.

Hi my father's name Lindel Aloysius Gayle, I was told that he was born in England and later move to Jamaica. He was living in Mike Town in Jamaica, which is where he also died. I've never met him or know anything about him. If you or anyone knows anything please let me know.

Thank you for your reply! We are black too. My mom's mother is/was Martha Gayle. I've been trying to find ANYONE who would know about a Martha Gayle! My mom was born in 1933 ... her father was Audley Wallace from the Wallace Clan in Maypen Jamaica. The story is Martha Gayle had my Mom Audrey and when she was 9 months old her father Audley took her away from Martha to raise her with his family the Wallaces ... My mom Audrey doesn't know her mom and only heard she was from Spaulding? or Sarenghetti? Jamaica. My mom moved to Queens NY at the age of 20, married my Dad Albert January 30,1954 and they live there to this day with the rest of my family. I'm not sure if that info helps but I am looking for my Grandmother Martha or family members who may know her. Thank you so very much again for your reply.

Thanks...Yes, I am not sure about how accurate it is that he was "born" there...One census list his birth about 1812 and another list his birth about 1816.

If William was born on John & Nancy's place in Sumter it would have been between 1802 and 1811. Does that sound about right? Nancy Gayle died around 1809 in SC. Two years later John & their children moved to what is now south central Alabama.

John Gayle of Tusculum died before 1748 as proven by Somerset, MD Prerogative Court Rcds. L1782.10.2 et al. He could not have had a son born in 1751 and he was not the grandfather of #4 Matthew Gayle b. 1797 Sumter Dist. SC. Matthew 1797 was the son of John Gayle b. between 1765-1770 VA, d. 1828 AL, as proven by the will (Edgefield, SC, 1808) of John's mother Lucretia [Billups] Gayle, widow of Matthew Gayle b. 1720-30. The given names used by Matthew 1720-1730 and his descendants are suggestive of a connection with the family of George Gale of MD, but none has been proven.

Looking for an inscription/person on a CW gun that is inscribed "Lieut J. E. Gayle SC Regt". Does anyone know of this person or related to? I am assuming the the J.E. was inscribed correctly. Possibility that it may not be. Anyone with a Lieut Gayle known to be in your family and Confederate service would be appreciated.

What would you like to know? You can check my tree Barbara Gayle. Josiah Gayle fought in the revolutionary war along with sons Christopher and Josiah Jr.. Josiah Jr. was captured by the British and hung. I am desended from his child Josiah III.

john gayle married mary parker in arkansas they were both living in their parents homes in the 1860 census. they marred 1869 union county AR and are in the 1900 census. When did they die? buried at? kids? and the mother nancy parker living with them in the 1900 is it the same parker family of mine? nancy ann allen parker and joseph parker were mary's parents. Any info is needed.

I couldn't figure out what was written, thanks for clarifing that. I have no evidence that my Robert Gayle is son of Robert Gayle Gloucester Co.VA, but the remark from Sussanah P. Smith will leaving her daughter that property in TN. Yet isn't Peter Gayle in the census 1840 in TN, Sussanah and Thomas son? Do you know if Thomas Gayle went to TN? On the jhemphill site it has my Robert Gayle born in Rutherford TN. I did come accross a William H. Gale md Sarah A Harris in 12-25-1823 in Rutherford Co. TN. I believe that Rutherford Co. is just outside of Nashville. Have you came accross any connection of William H. Gale to the Gayle of Gloucester Co. VA?

For clarification from Joice Gayle's application for Pension:

. . . that she is the widow of Mathias Gayle who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. I do not know when he entered the service of the United States as we were not married at that time. He belong(ed) to the service of the United States at the time we were married he was under Capt. R. Gayle (his older brother) at that time who had command of a militia company and so continued until the end of the war. I know of no engagement that he was in during the Revolutionary War. I have heard him speak of being at Gloucester town when the great Battle was fou(gh)t. I do not recollect the numbers of his tours of duty. She further declares that she was married to the foresaid Mathias Gayle in 1780 by parson Fountain and that her husband the foresaid Mathias Gayle died in 1794 and that she has remained a widow ever since that period as will those ??? appear by ??? to the proof hereto answered.

Capt. R. Gayle was Mathias' eldest brother. All four brothers (Robert, Thomas, George and Mathias) served together during the War. Thomas, the second oldest, was the one that married as his second wife, Susannah P. Smith (who was married first to Robert Brown) whose will you were referring to in Charlotte County.

The only thing I can make out of these Revolutionary papers is, Joice Gayle in July 4th 1836 stating she is the widow of Matthias Gayle, he was under Gaft? R Gayle, she ??? unknown what word are written Matthias Gayle 1780, He died 1794 the signture looks like Jrio Gayle, Thomas Hall Sept 20th 1837 affirms that his sister married Matthias Gayle in 1779 or 80 and lived together as man and wife until his death. In the 1830 US Fed Census Mathews VA, Have many Gayle living side by side. The oldest Gayle is Hanley Gayle 70to80 than Berthall? Gayle 40to50 Mathew,Robert, Thomas all are in the same age group 30to40. My Robert D. Gayle is born abt 1833 Rutherford Co. Tn, I cannot verifie he is the same Robert shown in SUSANNAH P GAYLE will buying items, Yet the link I want to connect is where she say's "Item 3. To lawful of Sally Crowder's body I give my tract of land
containing 86 acres more or less lying in Haywood County, West
Tennessee to be received by them at cost as part of legacy from my estate,
notice this considering the said land shall be reserved exclusively for a
home for Sally Crowder during her life and my desire is that the said
children shall receive on legatees part of my estate in like manner to be

I am descended from Robert Gayle (1745 - 1782) of Kingston Parish, Gloucester County. Do you have a source for Matthias as the father of Robert & his brothers? I met Lester Templeton Gayle a few years before his death & have a photograph of his mother, Ruth Stores. I also have a photo of his parents, Robert & Sarah, & their children. If we go with Gayle using middle names of madin name of mom, In your research have you came across, Robert D. Gayle b. 1833 TN? Also Lafayette used with middle name of my William L. Gayle who married Laura Mott. I have the tree from Robert D. Gayle married Sarah Seela, put past that is only guessing.

I follow you through the Roberts -- but I don't have the first Robert's son that married Perlina James as a Robert Johnson. The only Robert Johnson I have is their son, who married Sarah Hunley Brownley. They had a son Robert Finley Gayle who is a forebear of a cousin of mine/your husbands and has done extensive research on the Gayles.

My question to you is how you determined that the father of the first Robert (my Matthias' brother) is a Matthias. I would be interested in knowing more about this Matthias, because he would be my Matthias' father also.

Our cousin has also never been able to connect the brothers, Robert, Thomas (m. Mary Culley & Susannah Smith), my Matthias (m. Joice Hall) and George -- who fought together in the Rev. War, with Robert being their captain -- to a parent so your clue that their father is a Matthias could be huge.

Robert Gayle, son of Matthias, died in 1782. Was married to Sarah. His son, also a Robert Johnson, was born in 1769 and was married to Paulina. He had a least one sister, Elizabeth Frances. Robert Johnson, (the first I suppose) had a son, Robert Johnson, b. 1828 in Mathews Couty and d. 1917 in Portsmouth. He was a blacksmith. He was married to Sarah Brownley. They had 8 children. My husband's line is through their sixth son, Lester Templeton and Ruth Stores. They had three sons, including my husband's father.

If any of this is the least helpful to anyone, please email me. You may notice that this Gayle family was really into the old custom of using the vife's maiden name as a middle name for sons or even a first name.
