I am just curious to see if you are the same Gaynor from IL who is also researching the Borre family? My grandmother was Helen Carney and her sister Anne married a Borre in IL. Would love to share notes if possible.

Sincerely,

John Carolan
jayjay282202@yahoo.com

Just a note to let you know I have been successful in obtaining, by mail, NYC vital records that have been pivotal in confirming "he/she is mine!" thanks to your help. Georgia Anna Starr died of TB in 1913 in Queens, and she is in Holy Cross Cemetery...and I have discovered the name of the father of one of her two children, John F. Gaynor.

Thanks!

The NYC death certificates have a ton of info, iincluding parents and their birthplaces if known. Also info about immigration and date and place of burial. I know there were a few areas with Gaynors at Calvary Cemetery. If they are there, the women at Calvary Cemetery were wonderful in person and a cousin said they were very helpful over the phone.
Thank you so much. Took me a min to locate the German site (www.ggg.org) but glad I searched for it. I had more luck there than at the Italian site, thanks to your tip to not check any county/borough.

I actually found a death record I believe looks solid for my most mysterious ancestor, Georgia Ann (Starr) Gaynor. And I found her only brother, and his child.

I live in Alabama, so not likely to be in NYC area anytime soon, but thanks to your tip, I am getting some really good stuff on these sites. The really big mystery I'm tracking is who was the father of Georgia Ann Starr Gaynor's children, so I am getting my forms filled up right away to send off.
Again, thanks for your time to reply to my post here.

They have parents, parents' birthplace, place of birth, years in US and NYC, mother's maiden name and if she had previous children. Interestingly, the name is handwritten along the side, which is the name it is filed under and across the top. My grandmother's name was writtne Kaihryn on the side and Kathryn at the top. I found it filed under Kaihryn Smith. So try all kinds of combinations. I also foud Gaynor as Gainer, Guiner (a is open), Gaynor. Good luck. If you ever get to NYC go to the municipal archives. Worth it. Good luck!

I have family descended from Christopher Gaynor of co Meath, Ireland to NYC around 1852. Don't know any more of his family. Have you checked the italiangen.org and germangen.org sites. They have indexes for deaths, births, grooms, and brides in NYC 9including all boroughs) listed.
I checked on the italiangen.org and found birth for John F Gaynor Nov 18, 1887, Brooklyn, Kings, NY. Certificate number 10363. You can go to the NYC municipal site to find how to order certificates. About $15 each. I was at the municipal archives on Chambers St last week. You can look up the exact one on microfilm. Hope this helps you. It is very easy to use the municipal archives, although the women are extremely helpful, about 1/2 the machines don't work. Good luck, maybe we have a connection somewhere.

Hello, fellow Gaynor searchers. Does anyone have information and especially ancestry traced for John F Gaynor, b. 1859 in New York, married to Georgia Starr, b. 1863 in Savannah, Ga.

They lived in New York City or Brooklyn. Their 2 children were:
John Francis Gaynor, 1887-1964 (my grandfather, born in NY and moved by 1920 to Hackensack, NJ)
William E Gaynor, 1894-1978

ALSO: A possible third child. Georgia listed 3 children, but only 2 living children, in the 1910 federal census. At census time Georgia Starr Gaynor was a widow living with her two sons.

There are more than a few Gaynors in Missouri. The Gaynor side of my family in Missouri is from the KC area, came over from Co. Tipperary, Ireland around 1900.

You can find digital versions of pre-1960 Missouri death certificates and pre-1910 birth/death certificates from the missouri secretary of state's digital heritage homepage:
http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/birthdeath/

Origin of the family name is Irish, with the family tracing itself back to the Co. Longford region around Lough Gowna, sometime around 1,000 A.D.

The name is an Anglicization/corruption of Mac Fionnbarr (Mag Fhionnbhairr, Fionnbharr, Finbarr, Finbar etc.). The clan patriarch was Finbar O'Geradhain, hence the clan name of Mac(son of) Finbar. As an aside, the name Finbar is derived from the Irish Gaelic Fionn=fair and barr=top, translation "Fairheaded".

There are A LOT of variations on the name: Gainer, Gaynor, Gaenor, Maginnoire, Magenor, etc.

He had 4 children that I have found in marriage and birth records. They lived in New York and all the children were born in NYC in 1860's to 70's. If I find any more details, I will let you know. I have not Christopher in any census yet.

Thank you sooooo much, that is exactly what we have been looking for. We spent some time in Longford on our visit to Ireland, thinking that was our point of origin. We also had heard about the possibility of Cavan but again till now we were not sure...I have relayed our conversations to my brother and as i said before, i will speak to him tomorrow. You have been a godsend to us, thank you sooo much..John

Hi,

Here are the notes I have in my family tree program:

Oct. 3, 1885 2nd Marriage to Catherine Lynn (Linn) in Orange - Witnesses: Patrick Gaynor and Marcella(?) Gainor or Gannon

1910 Census: NJ, Essex County, Orange, ED 157. Vol. 23, Sheet 9, Line 95. 61 Parrow Street, Orange. Owned house. Lists year of immigration as 1871. Have 2 cousins living with them, Henry Johnson, driver, born in New York ~ 1882, 28 on census, father born in NY, mother born in Ireland and Lizzie Agin(?), cook, born in New York ~1873, 37 on census, both mother and father born in Ireland.

1915 Census: Widow. Living at 122 hickory St., Orange, NJ, Naturalized, retired, in US for 43 yrs. Living with a Henry Johnson, born Sept. 1884, (31yrs) and Mary Gaynor, born Feb(?) 1894, in Ireland (21yrs).

From Death Certificate: Lived at 134 parrow St. Orange.

Buried in St. Phillips Sec. Row L, Grave 20.

I also know from his death cert that his parents were Patrick and Catherine Moran. All his records that I found either with the state or church (St. John's in Orange) list Hibernia or Ireland. But, there was anothe Gaynor family lived in the same area and attended St. John's that list Cavan as their county - I have been trying to link them together especially since a Patrick Gaynor was his witness at his second marriage - the name that pops up most is Hugh Gaynor.

All Louis' sons were from his first marriage to Ellen Cullen - she died 5/2/1884. Her death record lists she was here for 15 years which would make immigration around 1869. Ireland is doing an amazing job at getting their records put on-line and every so often I will go on and check to see if I can match anything.

Family rumor has the Gaynor's coming from Roscommon or Mayo but I still think the best bet is Cavan.

Do you live in Jersey? I think I have the plot numbers for the Gaynors who are buried in St. John's. I live in South Jersey and haven't gotten up to the cemetary yet - I'm a little hesitant to go to Orange by myself - I almost have my brothers talked into going with me though so maybe once the weathe cools. I'm hoping they may have some info on-file in the office that wasn't listed in the St. John's books.

Lori

From what I know, it appears I am descended from John that much we have already established for sure. What we are trying to ascertain is where Louis landed in this country and what was his original county of origin. We went recently to Ireland and found in Connemara a number of Gaynors. If you can answer any of these questions or have any further information which may help us please do not hesitate to send it forward...thank you so much for taking the time to post what you did, it is much appreciated by my brothers and sister.

Christopher Gaynor and Mary Henry had Kathryn (b 1879, m Joseph Nagro 1905), Adelaide (b 1882 m John Bradley), Margaret (b 1869 m Francis Toner 1898), Gertrude (b 1875) and Annie.

Anything else I'm missing?

so we are related distantly. So far, all I know is that they were both born in Ireland. I think Christopher Gaynor was from the Meath area. Do you have an Adelaide Toner in your family. She was my father's, Theodore John Langan, Godmother. If you go to familysearch.org and use their pilot site, you can find the info on the family births and marriages. Also I did find a Christopher and Mary Gaynor with 3 children including Margaret in the 1870 census. THe info on familysearch, I also found when I went to the NYPL. If you go onto that site, you can get the same info. What info do you have on the Gaynors.

If all that produces is an invite to subscribe to ancestry, then try plan B: google "tobar textbase" and the first page found should have my address a few lines from the top.

Hope to hear from you.

Thank you for the information on the grave of Joseph Gaynor. I did not know of the date of his passing nor that of Mary. Also, I did not know that there was a Maureen Gaynor.

As you may have guessed, I am just one of millions all over the world whose origins are due to emigration from Ireland. Consequently, I have limited knowledge of my extended family in Ireland, and indeed limited opportunity to visit the country. However, just last year, I visited Ireland on a holiday and took the opportunity to stop in Antrim. There was little time to look for Joseph's grave. I do appreciate that you found it. Perhaps there will be another chance to visit Ireland in the future.

I had not realized that there were so many Gaynors in the Antrim area (from your earlier email). This information exchange is very helpful to me as I begin putting together the family history.

It appears that you must live relatively close to, or in, Antrim town. It is interesting that your initial posting to this webpage was over two years ago, without a reply until a few days ago. Had you previously been aware that Mary (Doherty) Gaynor was buried in the St Comgall's graveyard in Antrim?

I have to ask - what is your relationship to Mary Doherty? Obviously, I did not know her, just that there was an Aunt Mary. However, memory being what it is, I could be getting her mixed up with another aunt in Ireland.

Best regards

I visited St Comgall's graveyard today and found the grave of Joseph Gaynor. It backs on the the front hedge of the graveyard, in the second row out from the hedge, and is about the third grave from the start of the row.

Those buried there are:
Mary A Gaynor, died 26 August 1965
Her husband Joseph Gaynor, died 3 April 1981
Their daughter Maureen Patricia Gaynor, died 30 September 1993

Do you know if Maureen P was the only child, or were there any others? The grave seems well kept. I may try to make contact with the authorities there.

C.
Ciarán,
Thank you for the information on the Gaynors of Antrim. I am just at the beginning of my search and had not yet found the census records of 1901.
Regarding details of the marriage of Joseph Gaynor and Mary Doherty and their children, you may be able to find something of help in the registers of St. Comgall's parish church in Antrim.
Last year, I located the grave of Arthur and Sarah Gaynor (Joseph's parents and my grandparents) in the St. Comgall's churchyard. However, I was unable to find Joseph and Mary's gravesite as there was no one available to ask and time was very short.
Sorry I can't be of more assistance at this time.
Regards,
Gerard
It seems so. You can see the Gaynor family's 1901 and 1911 census entries at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000252452/ and http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003923871/ respectively. Joseph figures in both, Hugh (aged 8) in the latter.

I have note of the following Gaynor deaths in the Antrim district:
1965/q1 Antrim 71: Henry Gaynor, age 50
1965/q3 Antrim 215: Mary A Gaynor, age 73
1977/q4 Antrim 249: William Gaynor, age 64
1981/q1 Antrim 88: Joseph Gaynor, age 87
1983/q4 Antrim 260: Kathleen W Gaynor, age 86
1990/q2 Antrim 148: Jane L Gaynor, age 75
1992/q1 Antrim 284: Mary J Gaynor, age 71
1993/q4 Antrim 230: Maureen P A Gaynor, age 63
which include Joseph and his wife Mary A.

I'd really like to find out about Mary A, if you have any information.

Thanks,
Ciarán.

He ended up living on the California coast -- first near San Francisco, and then southward just north of Los Angeles. (between both San Francisco and Los Angeles). He died around 1935 -- I can't remember the exact date off the top of my head. He was married twice -- once to a Canadian woman and had 5 children; he divorced and remarried in Reno, Nevada -- I don't believe he had children with second wife. And I'm not certain when and where he met his second wife -- It just may have been during his travels westward.

Let me know if you need additional information to help solve the puzzle!!

Note that there was apparently another brother Phillip Gaynor, born about 1834, died 26 Nov 1859. He is buried on the James S Gaynor plot in Natchez City Cemetery and identified as James' brother on the gravestone.

Max

I am looking for information and further connections to William GAYNOR, born 1832 in Longford, Ireland. He came to the US and settled in Dover, Dearborn County, Indiana with brothers James, Thomas and possibly Patrick. Need to know specifically where the records would be found -- village, townland, etc. Will be glad to share what I have on this family and others who married into it.
