I am trying to find information on Lee Roise Geary b. 1890 in Illinois to Loren Harry Geary and Wilmoth Atwood Jones. He appears on the 1900 census with his family in 1900, and on board the USS Princeton in Nicaragua on the 1910 census. I cannot find any information on him after that time. He was a brother to my grandfather, Nicholas Jones Geary. He perhaps joined the service before he was old enough, because he had to have his mother sign a form for him to join. They did not hear from him after that. He may have even changed his name. Any information will be appreciated.

I am rejoining Ancestry (as I had lapsed) in the next couple of days so that this will hopefully be possible. By the way, I am female - father Welsh - so that's where my name comes from even though I was born in London!
I will be in touch when my subscription is confirmed.
Morning Ceri
Thanks for the reply. I am sorry I did not give you my full name. It is Laurence Garey. As I live in a French speaking part of Switzerland, it often causes confusion, as Laurence is a girl's name in French, and I am bald and bearded! On the same topic, is Ceri male or female? I have a male colleague in London named Ceri, but it can also be a girl. Of Welsh origin I think.
Strange that I do not have details of Thomas (son of Arthur) nor Leonard, so thanks for the information. The 6 children I have of Arthur (born 1864 in Hemel Hemstead, and married Louisa Jane) are: Constance M L 1889, Arthur W 1890, Gertrude 1892, Alfred 1894, Edith 1895, Alice 1897. Do you know about them?
Henry was the 8th of 8 children of Richard Garey/Geary/Gary (1752-1801) and Hannah Elliot (1755-1833)in Stockbridge. Number 1 was my direct ancestor, Edward Garey (1777-1851). He married Mary Ann Warner (b Stockbridge 1783)and moved to the East End of London (the marriage was at St Botolph Bishopsgate in 1807. He was a carpenter, and was deaf! Richard's parents were Edward Gary and Elizabeth. Note that the spelling of the family name changes, even within a generation. Perhaps a problem with transcribing the writing in the records.
My main concerns are to get further back, and also to try to relate the several Garey families living in the East End at the time.
Now to my lineage from Edward. Edward had 5 children, of whom at least one (Henry William, b 1813 Bishopsgate) kept the woodwork skill going. He married Elizabeth Jones and had 5 children. One, Richard Thomas Garey (1845-1914), was a wood carver and married the daughter (Augusta Unger 1848-1902) of a Jewish tailor from Prussia in London before moving to Stroud to work in a walking stick factory there. Indeed I have recently caught up with another remote cousin on the Unger side, now living in Poole. Richard and Augusta (I have their photos) had 8 children, of whom Marcus George Garey was my grandfather (1882-1957), born in Stroud but moved to Peterborough, where my father (and I) were born.
Marcus was also a wood worker.

I do not know what name to give to our relationship: some sort of cousin "removed" I suppose. Anyway it is good to have found you.
Maybe we should continue with more recent personal details by email.
Regards, Laurence

Dear lgarey (sorry don't have your name)
I have traced back to Henry Geary of Stockbridge b.c1796. The family then moved to Berkhampstead probably in 1840s. His son Moses was my grandfather's grandfather, his son was Arthur who married Louisa. My g/father Thomas was born in 1902, there was also another son Leonard born in 1908. Thomas (d.1983) had 2 children with wife Lilian (1904-1983), Sheila (my mum) b.1930 d.2008 & Janet b.1934. So it would appear that our 3xgg/fathers were brothers - not sure what relation that makes us! I would be most interested to learn about ancestors from Henry backwards, if you have any more information, as I have not got that far myself. Look forward to hearing from you.
Ceri

I think we are distantly related. I have traced Arthur (born 1864), back to Moses (1836-1914), who went to Hemel Hempstead etc (married Kezia More), then his father Henry, born 1796. Henry's parents were Richard Garey/Geary/Gary (1752-1801) and Hannah Elliott. Henry was the young brother of Edward Garey (1777-1851) who was my ggg gdfather. He moved to the East End of London. This seems to fit in, but I cannot find your grandfather (Thomas)as a son of Arthur. He and his wife, Louisa Jane, had 6 children from 1889 to 1897, but maybe I missed one other son.
What do you think? Any other information available?

Wade's only living brother is Homer and he lives in California with Edith their only living sister. Edith Tyree has lived in California for as long as I can remember. Homer moved their not too long ago to be with her. Their father was William Grant Geary and mother was Mary Frieberg Geary. My parents still live on the same farm.

Your Family lineage would be Peter Geary>Adam Geary>Chauncey Geary>William G. Geary>Wade S.
I have made a breakthrough. Daniel and three (3) brothers came to America and landed in Boston, Mass. in 1847 on the ship Barg Ovanda. The ship came from Cork, Ireland.
My GGGrandmother came in 1849 with Three (3) sons Thomas Francis b. 1842, Patrick William b. 1845 & Daniel Jr. b. 1846

I have traced my roots back to Stockbridge.
Edward Gary m Elizabeth about 1730: son Richard Gary (1752-1801)m Hannah Elliot 1776, son Edward Garey (1777-1851) moved to London, m Mary Ann Warner (Bishopsgate 1807), son Henry William Garey and so on down to me. The family also moved to Stroud for a while, then to Peterborough.
Can anyone tell me who were Edward Gary's parents, and how the many Gareys in the area in the 1700s were reletd?
Thanks, Laurence
Hey, I think -- not certain, though likely -- that that "Kildorrery" Owen Geary was mine (or rather, an ancestor of someone close to me).

That or another Owen Geary had a son Daniel who married Ellen Obrien in Kildorrery in 1869. Trying to find siblings of Daniel's. He (Daniel) had been born around 1850 so it was certainly possible to have had siblings born in the 1860s. Just throwing it out there!

The name "Eugene" looms large in that family ... were there any in your Geary line with that name?

Contact the County Historical Society and ask for a copy of the obit, this usually costs just a few dollars. Sometimes the local library will have a headstone index for the cemetery. The County Clerk will have the death certificate showing the name of the funeral home. The funeral home will have free records. The cemetery will also have records.

Morgan County Addresses

Morgan County Courthouse
100 East Newton Street
Versailles, Missouri 65084
(573) 378-5436

The courthouse burned in 1887, but the records were saved.
ps! My Michael Geary was born in 1899. He came to Boston in 1921. He married mary Nee Burke Geary in 1924. He died in 1966 and my grandmother Mary Geary lived on west 3rd st in southie until she died in 1990. Mike's father was definately Patrick Geary. That's all I know, but I do have some good documentation of that. I just wonder if Martin Geary was Patrick Geary's relative, or if there's any connection at all!

thanks for the help. I think they are 2 different, but possibly related families. On my grandfather Mike's marriage license he wrote his mom's name as Mary Nee Barrett Geary, but On his passport it says he's staying with his "cousin" mary Barrett. On his death certificate it lists his mom as Mary Nee Nash Geary! Clearly there was some confusion. The census does show Martin on 565 4th st, but It says on my grandfathers marriage license that he lived on 310 4th st! So many discrepancies when dealing with this stuff. In his obtituary (1966) ti lists 2 sisters. Margaret and Ceceilia O'Sullivan. They must have married brothers?!!! I know Mike is from Toureen because I have his original passport. I know Mike also had 2 nephews who lived in Chicago named John and Coleman McDonough.
Does any of this sound familiar to you? What is your Geary connection? Anyways, thanks for the help!

Sorry but I cannot either confirm or dispute this relationship. The Gearys and their ancestors were from the western part of Bedfordshire, which borders Northamptonshire, where George Washington's ancestors have been located by SOME of other researchers. It is likely that there just might be some sort of relationship, but I cannot say for sure.

Also, are you related to Alfred Patrick, who is the son of Ben C. Patrick and Jessie Hodges? My grandfather was Victor Patrick, Ben's brother.

My email is epthorpe@yahoo.com

THOMAS and AMANDA GEARY

I'm kind of lost in a sea of Gearys . . . the furthest I can go back is to Thomas GEARY (born about 1835 in Indiana) and Amanda GARRISON (born October 1833 in Indiana). Does anyone have information regarding THEIR parents? Thanks.
