My grandmother was born in Brooklyn I believe or she may have been born in Germany. We are not certain on that. Her father was Charles Geibel and mother's last name was Darra (Darria). She was born in 1896, worked as a telephone operator and married my grandfather in 1917. He was a fire fighter in the Navy at that time. She had 7 kids of whom #6 was my father and lived in Potter Valley and Ukiah in Mendocino County in Northern CA. She is buried there in the cemetery (1947). According to her obit she had two brothers who had come out from NY to take her back with them. They may have been older. One I believe was Andrew and one may have been Henry. They were Jewish converted to Catholicism. I need to find her relatives who would also be my relatives. We have no idea of where her husband ended up after he committed bigamy and moved out of history.

I am william Geibel the son of Harold August Geibel. Charles Geibel is his older brother. Charles Wood Geibel was their father. They all lived in New York. Harold Geibel lived in upstate new York in a village called Mexico. He had six kids, four boys and two girls.

Charlotte Deihl was the mother of Charles and Harold. She died when harold was 4 and Charles was 6 or 7. I heard today from my sister that Charlotte died of an abortion, not sure if it is true.

I don't have any information on Gottlieb Geibel in my data base. My Geibel family comes from Limburg and/or Neuenheim, Germany, from the mid 1800's. I don't have any known connections to Darmstadt that I know of at this time. Have traced my Geibel line in Limburg and Neuenheim back to the mid-1600's with no link to Darmstadt at least through that period of time. Sincerely, Bruce B. Geibel.

I am trying to information about great grandfather and great grandmother. I believe his name was Louis Geibel and was married to Gottlieben Geibel. They had 4 children: Carl, my grandfather, born in 1900, Margaret, Louis, and William. He may have owned a Bakery on Laurel Street in Philadelphia around 1900.

I have located census records from 1880 where Louis Geibel born in Baden? Germany was married to Sarah Geibel and had 2 stepsons. His occupation indicates Baker. They lived at 151 Laurel Street, Philadelphia.

A reply to a message I posted a while back, told me there was a Louis Geibel who owned a Bakery at 149 Laurel Street in Philadelphia.

Census records from 1910 show Gottlieb Geibel and 1 son William and 1 daughter Margrette (sp). Gottlieben's occupation is listed as Baker. I am unable to read the street name.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Carl

She married Philip J Jacobus, also of Kreuznach.

Susanna and Philip are listed as the parents of 3 deceased children on a monument in Northwood Cemetery, Philadelphia. The large surname on the monument is LEIBY.

Any possibility that LEIBY was originally GEIBEL???? Certainly German names were butchered in the 1800's!
Good day! I am just two days into my seach and already am thrilled to find so much information. My name is Gretchen and my Great Great Grandmother was Nellie Geible. Sister of Fred Geible Jr.(1894-1924?). Daughter of Fred Geible Sr.(1858-?) and Mary J Geible (1859-?) I have heard talk of Aunt Belle from My Dad, Richard (Rick(y)) McArthur. I think she was well liked. I have found info on Where Fred and Nellie (Geible) McArthur Lived when my grandfather (George McArthur) was a boy.

I also found Fred Geible Jr's Draft card. But like I said, I am just getting started. If anyone has any more information on this family line, either the McArthurs or the Geibles I would apprectiate a note or two. Thanks and good hunting!

Hello Barbara,

This is the first response I ever received regarding Louis Geibel from a Geibel. Thank you for responding. Louis does appear to be quite a mysterious figure. My father, Carl F. Jr does not know much about him and my Aunt Helen, my father's sister is very tight lipped. However, my father has mentioned your name, Barbara and your/his cousin's name Marie. I know nothing else about the Geibels beyond my father, his sister, and their grandparents name and what I have found in the Census records.

I have found your father's name and Marie's father's name referenced in a few Census records. Marie's father Louis and my grandfather, Carl attended Girard College in Philadelphia as children. I believe Girard College was for both orphaned and fatherless boys.

I have discovered as you mentioned that Louis, or Ludwig was married to Sarah Leffler who had 2 sons from a previous marriage (I assume) according to the 1880 Census.

I would really appreciate learning more information from you. Our family heritage can not possibly be that much of a secret. Besides, I know nothing about my Grandfather's siblings and thier descendants.

You can email me directly at cgeibel@tampabay.rr.com. Perhaps we could touch base.

Thanks Barbara. I really appreciate your information.

I just read your message after doing a little searching and was truly amazed to find it. My father was your grandfather's yougest brother, William. Louis was indeed a baker who lived on Laurel Street. When I was a child, my father showed me the house where he was born. I also have a few of Louis' baking pans.

He appears to be quite a mysterious figure; my father knew little about him; he was a baby when Louis died. My Aunt Margaret, the oldest of the four children, apparently didn't know much. He was married once before.

I do have some original documents that I discovered after Aunt Margaret's death; I think the information will be helpful to you. Ludwig Geibel emigrated to the United States from Hahn, Hessen, Darmstadt in 1868. I believe that he was born in 1839. He became a US citizen in Philadelphia on June 25, 1892. He and Gottlieben Sanwald were married on May 9, 1895 at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Philadelphia . She was from Sulzbach and Murr, Wurttemberg. One of the witnesses to the marriage was Jacob Geibel -- I'm assuming, his brother.

Good luck in your search. I would appreciate learning any information that you might discover. My cousin Marie, duaghter of Louis, is also interested.

Barbara

My father was Merrell Geible, born in Wabash, IN 6/10/1922. His father was Fred Geible [d. 1924]. Dad had done some geneology research in the 1970's and came up with the same ancestral lineage as you mention, starting with Henry. If I can find it, I'll contact you. Dad had a brother (Harry) who died earlier this year in Florida. His sister Frieda Anderson is still living in Indiana. I can remember an Aunt Belle, who lived in the Chicago area in the 1950s when I was a boy, and a cousin of Dad's named Streicker (Streicher?) I met once when still pretty young. He was an Army officer at that time. Sorry, but that's all I can remember without help. Found your message, and wanted to reply right away. I'm just starting.

Hello,
I encountered your posting while doing a search for "Waldgreweiler".
According to information that was given to my mother about her grandmother's grandparents, they were Henry Geible, who was born in Canton Rokenhausen (Rochenhausen?), Waldgreweiler. His wife's maiden name was Elisabeth Glaser. My mother's father and mother, Charles and Ruthanna Schlemmer, lived in Indiana where he was a pastor in the Evangelical United Brethern Church. My mother was born in Wabash.
I have just gotten this paper, and have not quite figured out all the intertwined relationships it lists, and it is a very bad mimeographed copy. But if you are interested, I will retype it and send it to you, either by fax or mail.
I was astounded to see your posting (the only hit in my search), as it corresponds so well with my info!

I live near San Francisco.

Sincerely, Sally (Sexton) Wetherby

I'm searching for a Geibel who married Josephine Gladys(Aldrich) Harms. His first name may be Francis, born in 1904 and died abt 1973/75 perhaps in Illinois. They married sometime after 1940. Her second marriage. Don't know about him. Josephine is my husband's grandmother. She is a very elusive lady, can't seem to find much on her. Appreciate any help out there.

Thanks
Vickie

My family tree was pushed up one notch with the discovery of this GEIBEL family in the 1880 US Census Phila, PA.

This family is related to me as follows:

My father's mother was Julia Susan SCHWARZ

Her mother was Anna BOMMERSHEIM

Anna's mother was Mary GEIBEL

Mary's father has to be Adam GEIBEL, Sr., the retired merchant enumerated in the 1880 Census. Her mother must have been Louisa GEIBEL, Adam's wife.

I know for a fact that Anna's cousin was Adam GEIBEL, the music composer.

Family legend states that when Anna BOMMERSHEIM emigrated to the US, her arrival was a "package deal" to her fiance, Emil SCHWARZ, who had to arrange for the whole family to come over from Frankfort am Main.

Any cousins here? I'd love to find living descendants!

LivyRevits@aol.com

Geibel-Bommersheim- 1830, Paris, France

In Paris, Fr., about 1860, Anna Bommersheim was b to Mary Geibel and her husband, Michael Bommersheim. This family was related to the blind piano composer whose work became included as basic lessons in primers for musicians.

Abt 1875, with widowed Mary in tow,Anna emigrated to Philadelphia, PA to become the bride of Emil Schwarz,a Franco-Prussian War veteran from Hesse Darmstadt. By 1890, they had 4 daughters: Anna, Carolyn, Catherine, and Julia.

Am trying to piece together this line from mere fragments that have nonetheless been generously handed down to me from the meager data that survives. In bygone years, my ancestral U.S. immigrants wanted to shed details of their foreign heritage in favor of a newer, completely American personna. Not much was preserved, and now, I'm trying to reconstruct.

Would like to share.

Livy at ARevits@aol.com
