Hi Liz in Italy,

I'm still here. I just noticed your reply.

I visited Geilston House. It is quite beautiful. Andrew Geils made it - son of Thomas? They all have the same names and recycle them. They had a very good family tree at Geilston House but they would not give me a copy or let me photograph it.

It does exist.

David

Re: Geil History by Wenger Jacob Geil (1746-1794)

I suspect you may already have located a copy of Wenger's
History of the Descendants of J.Conrad Geil and His Son Jacob Geil. This was first published in 1914. I was able to purchase a paperback copy through Amazon.com at what I consider a reasonable price. It a nicely done reprint done
2011.
I am descendant of J.Conrad and son, Jacob Geil (1746-1794)
& you may want to review my Geil Family Tree (pynejack).
Jacob had 4 wives, Clymer/Clemmer(7 children);Fly (3 children; Krout/Kraut(1 child); Trissel (no children).
It has been difficult to keep all the wives/children straight. Many Geil trees have the children "assigned" to the wrong wife so be cautious. If you find errors in my tree, please feel free to let me know.I have the least information on Ms.Trissel and Wenger basically has none.
email:pynejack@AOL.com Carol Pyne

Hi Anthea,

I like to find out the connection between Joseph Donald Geils and the rest of the Geils family. I'd like to find any information I can about the family. Where are all the other Geils - it seems to be a very rare name.
My wife is related to Joseph's son Harold. It seems that Joseph died while Harold was still a child. My wife's mother, Isabel Geils died when she was a child. It is a bit hard to get information about the family. Do you know any of the stories, have any pictures of the family? Anything?
What were they doing in India?

Regards David

I can be contacted on dctonkin@bigpond.net.au

Hi Liz in Italy,

I'm trying to find the same Geils family. I visited the house in Dunbarton in April. It was lovely. It is a bit difficult to find the family.

When I was visiting the house in Dunbarton they had a history of the house. It had a very extensive family tree in it. I requested a copy of the history from Glasgow University but the only thing that was left out was the family tree - hmmm. It does exist but where?

Have you had any success?

David Tonkin

Hi Liz,

I have just found some of that information in the Napuk Family Tree.

I did find a really good tree of the family in a document kept at Geilston House - the Geils family home for the 19th century. I sent away for a copy of the document from Glasgow University Archaeology Department which I received last week. Strangely the only bit they left out of the document was the family tree - this is a bit vexing.

There is a suggestion that the family tree can be found in the Noble family tree. I'm looking.

Regards

Dave

Nicholas born June, 1860 and his wife Catherine who was born in Dec, 1860. Nicholas had a son George born March, 1883 and a brother George Jr born 1876. His father was also George who was born about 1835.

I have not run into an Andrew, though.

How do you tie into this family?
Hi Linda

I just saw your other post. Nicholas was alot older than my grandfather. He was born in 1860 and my grandfather was George Geil born in 1874, he married Mary Gardewing. (They were 2 of the 10 kids, Catherine and George had) but you may already know that. A few years ago Nick McMahan had a post tracing Nicholas geil and we did exchange some pictures, some of which I lost when our computer crashed last year. He is in Nicholas' direct line, a descendant of his son Edward and then Mae Mina Geil.

The best thing is probably to email me direct and we will see what we can fill in.

Regards, Mary Ann

I'm also doing research on Geils from Cincinnati. My great-great grandparents were George Geil (born about 1835 in Prussia) and Catherine Kempf (born about 1838 in Pennsylvania). I'm not sure if Lorenz and Rosina Geil are related. Is this Geil family part of your research? Would love any info or pictures you might have. Will share what I have.

Linda

Hi Unfortunately I do not think there is any connection. My great grandfather Georg Geil was born in Bavaria May 13, 1834. He is first found in Cincinnati in the 1850 census (George Kyle) with his mother, Catharina, then married to a Francis Eichert and a brother morris kyge(in the census as Kyle). Do not know if that marriage was in Europe or after in the US, Catharina was born in Bavaria in 1796 or so. George then married a Catharine Kempf from Pennsylvania in 1956. The 1889 census has him with all the kids and his mother then a widow. Georg fought in the civil war and died in 1882. Catharine K filed for a pension which is how I got a lot of information on their marriage and the kids. The only Anna was born in 1868 and died in 1888. I have never found the ship they came over on which I have to believe was somewhere around 1845. In the death record of Georg, it stated the number of years he had lived in Cincinnati. I have tracked All the kids and know who they married for the most part. So it really does not seem like there is a connection.
Who knows if in Europe they might have been cousins!!!

Ironically I see by your name you also have a "Schuh". My husband has a 5th great grandmother in the Alsace that is a Schuh.

Well sorry we could not seem to connect. If you ever find a town in bavaria that they are from I would be interested.
Keep in touch if anything new should appear.

Good luck, regards, Mary Ann

George married Rufina Lusch in 1870 and they had eight children that I know of. Rufina was born in Dushore, Pennsylvania. My grandmother, Anna Maria Christina Geil, was the third to last child. She was born 10 Apr 1886. I do not find a Morris or Mauritz but that might be a child I did not get. For now, I have Lorenz (Lawrence) Geil,B: 1823 in Bavaria as the father of George. I have no documentation for it, but he died in Celestine, Indiana where George is shown on the 1880 census and he and Rufina were married. Lorenz died just 5 days later. Can we connect?

You mentioned he is your great grandfather who his descendant, your grandfather or grandmother and I will see if it fits with any of the other relatives. I know there was a Mauritz or morris geil who also was there and Georg Geil had 10 children that I am aware of.

Your history sounds so close to mine and the dates are in the same time range. Only thing is my George was supposedly born in Kentucky with parents who came from Bavaria and France. I thought it might be his grandparents since there isn't always a lot of reality in the stories told by descendants! Can we stay in touch? George is my great grandfather and I am the only one left.

Hi we moved and built a new house so just getting back into genealogy. My great grandfather Georg Geil came from Germany in about 1845 and settled in Cincinnati, he was about 10 and came with his mother and possibly a brother. Same problem, place is listed as Bavaria in census and mother outlived son and no record of the ship they came over on. Cincinnati also had a lot of fires, destroying many records. His mother also had a different last name in the 1850 census, did not know if she remarried in US or Germany. Hoping to check out old newspapers this summer when we visit Ohio. Good luck.

Mary Geil married John Schwarz who became Mayor of Savannah in the 1860s follwing the Civil War. Their children include FREDDIE SCHWARZ. (Schwarz family of Savannah are Catholic and Episcopalian, I think Geils were Catholic but not sure.)

Thanks!
