Hi there - When I started researching the family tree, I went down a mistaken path. My Pietro Genova isn't related to the family that came to Boston (brother Andrea, mother with the surname Castronovo). That is a different household. I later obtained the death certificate of my gr-grandfather which showed that his parents were Giovanni Genua and Donata Cerasuolo. I then obtained the microfilm from the Family History Center and found Pietro's birth record in Anzano di Puglia, which confirmed their names.

Hi Pete,

I think I am heading down a road you have already traveled, and am curious about your conclusion in this post. Pietro & Andrea had two sisters and another brother named Francesco "Frank", he married Rose Nicoletti, had 3 children, Guy, Josephine, and John The first two are named after his parents (english translations of Gaetano and Giuseppe). Pietro and Andrea included "fu Gaetano" in their names at immigration, which indicates Gaetano is their deceased father's name. These two pieces of information and infomration "known" to the living family members seems to point to the parents being Gaetano Genova and Giuseppa Castronovo. I see from your older posts that you were heading this way at one point, how did you rule it out in favor of the info in this post?

I am looking for anyone who knows of the genova family from the Diamond Bar, CA area. The names I know of are Marco Assan Genova and his sister Manique or Monique Genova. Manique died in about 1992. Both would be in their late 30s now. They lived with their grandfather whose name I do not know. It is very important that I find information. I'm helping my young step daughter find her family. Thank you.

Genova surname, Anzano di Puglia
After 2+ years of trying to figure out where my great-grandfather, Pietro Genova, was born, I finally found the answer. He was born in Anzano degli Irpini (now called Anzano di Puglia).

Are there any Genova (or Genuas) who have roots in this town? I have researched a microfilm from the Mormon Family History Center, and I have found the following information.

My gr-gr-grandfather was Giovanni Genova, but I suspect that his name was changed from "Genua". Here's why. In the 1880s, there were some birth records in Ananzo of children who were born to Giovanni Genua and Grazia Riggillo. I then found a record of Giovanni Genova (my gr-gr-grandfather) marrying my gr-gr-grandmother, Donata Cerasuolo, in 1889. From this point on, there are no records of birth of children of Giovanni Genua & Grazia. My gr-grandfather was then born in July of 1890, and on the birth record, there is something written on the side of the record and the names "Genua" and "Genova" are mentioned. I wonder if the surname was changed from Genua to Genova.

Is there anyone with roots in this town who has information to share? I greatly appreciate it!

Pete Genova
I'm trying to find out information about my great-grandfather. His name was Pietro Genova, and he died during an influenza outbreak in Boston in September, 1918.

I found a Pietro Genova on the Ellis Island site who would have been the same age as my great-grandfather. He arrived in Boston with his older brother Andrea in 1907. I found an Andrea Genova in the Social Security death index who would have been the same age as the Andrea on Ellis Island.

I therefore believe that Pietro and Andrea were brothers. I am trying to contact any relatives or descendants of Andrea Genova who was born in 1883 and passed away in Swampscott, MA in 1968. If we are related I would like to share and obtain information about our family.

Pete Genova

Hey there,

I'm having difficulty researching information about my great-grandfather. His name was either Peter or John Genova, and he was born in the early 1890s in Italy. He came to Boston at a young age, married Pompilia (maiden name sounds like Labondonia) and she gave birth to my grandfather John. The problem is, my great-grandfather passed away at a young age in the 1920s, so my grandfather knew little about him. I know I'm fishing here, but I appreciate it if anyone had ANY information about him.

Pete

My grandfather Vito Genova married Crocifissa Renda. They were from Trapani. Unfortunately both are deceased and I have very little information about their birthplaces. They settled in New York City. Vito's brother Gaspare married Crocifissa's sister Antonina and they came to the United States (New York City) before my grandparents. My mother tells me she has cousins in Canada. My grandmother told my mother that the spelling of my grandfather's last name changed when he came to this country. I am very interested to get in touch with you!

I did have an uncle John, but i don't even know if he is alive. PS my mother's name is Lucy
her father was Frank Genova and she had a brother Angelo. They were raised on Grand St! good luck:)

Hi, Don't know if we are related, but I do recall as a child my mother telling me that her father had changed his name during immigration, from Genoa to Genova. I believe that was the town in Sicily where he was born and raised. The name could have been spelled the way you spelled it, I really don't know. Anyway, my grandfather's name was Frank and my grandmother's name was Lucille. They resided in Brooklyn. They had 11 children. Any help?????

Dear Vito,
I prefer correspond thru this forum. There may be a strong possibility that we are related. All of my relatives were raised in Brooklyn. So if you are from B'klyn or have/had relatives that were from there!!!!!!! My grandfather Frank Genova had his name changed when he came to this country. From either Genoa (or the spelling that you had previosly stated) to Genova. He was married to Lucille Chiarello (or something close to this spelling). They had 11 children. Frankie, Johnnny (the 1st one died, fell from a fire- escape), Angelo, Jimmy, Joey, Mary (lived in Massechusettes), Millie, Anna, Lucy and Josey. Now they are all scatterd (Long Island, Maspeth, New Jersey).
RING ANY BELLS????????

William:
Thanks for your quick reply. I believe my grandmother Josephine Genova may have come from S.Anna Sicily which I believe is in the Agrigento Province near Caltabellotta. She would have emmigrated to New Orleans around 1903. I have a record of a Paul Genova born in Santa Anna Italy, Jan. 7, 1865 who died in Cook County, Illinois in 1946. His parents were Guiseppi Genova and Pelligrina Falco. Paul was married to Carmella Sala.

I am not sure if this will lead anywhere but this is a name my paternal grandfather used when he wrote his book "We Flew Without Guns". As far as I know the "J" stands for Joseph (at least that's what the Library of Congress said). My grandfather has changed his name several times (Genovese, Genova, Genson...etc) and no one is sure what the last name is susposed to be.
My father's name was Salvatore Robert Genova and was born on May 13th, 1939. My father's mother name was Josephine "Ragonese" (not sure about the spelling). If you have any information on any of these people please contact me at hobbit1969@hotmail.com

Found your post on a search for Vita...I have no
Genoas/Genovas in my line as far as I know now
but I thought I'd ask if you have come across any
Brignolo or Mirabile in your Vita line? My grandmother
was Ignazia Brignolo, daughter of ? Brignolo and Rosa
Mirabile, born ca1898, emigrated to the US ca1910, settled
in Braintree, Massachusetts. She had siblings
Maria, Onofrio, Giuseppe, and Pasquale. Of them all,
only Pasquale remained in Sicily, and was reportedly a
Police Constable of some sort. Giuseppe returned to Sicily
after living in the US for years. If anything rings a bell, I'd
love to hear.

Regards,
Angela Harris
