Daniel was a miner in Ohio but seems to have given up mining by the time he went to Washington. It appears he worked for the railroad at least part of the time he lived in Washington. I believe he immigrated late in 1880, but have been unable to find any definite proof of that and even less on his wife. There is one possible manifest for him. I can't find any marriage for him in England or the US. There does not appear to be any record of a marriage in England, so he may have married in the US when she arrived or he might even have met her here. There is no information to give any clues. Daniel died in Washington in 1929.

Yes, I have a lot of information on Daniel Gent. Are you connected to him? I'd love to exchange information. Daniel married Margaret Jolly. In 1861 & 71 he was single and living with his parents in Chorley, Lancs, England. By 1900 he was living in Ohio, moving to Washington by 1910 where he spent the rest of his life. He was the son of William Gent and Alice Sumner. I have the children you have but also a son Cecil W who died at age 20. There was also another female who must have died young. I believe Jane is Drexel's middle name. I have birth, marriage, death, and military information on all the children as well as Daniel's connections in England, but no first hand information from close relatives. I'd love to compare notes. He had a brother in Ohio and cousins in Washington. If you'd like more information, contact me at linsfam (at) myfairpoint (dot) net. With your posting name of celloshop, I'm wondering if you are connected to brother, Thomas, who was a musician.

I have four Luke Gents in my family and am curious if you have any connection to Gents in Chorley and Adlington? My only family in Manchester was Timothy Gent whose brother was Luke but I don't believe Tim had a son, Luke who would have passed the name down.

I have never seen any proof or any solid evidence of the GENT family from Lancashire ever coming from Ghent, Belgium though I have heard it before. Older family members going back to the 1830's never mentioned it, and other stories have passed down from that time. I think someone threw that out as a possibility and people have jumped on it ever since. The name is not pronounced like the city of Ghent, Belgium. Instead of being named after the city, they could have been named after a 'gentleman' in the family or gentlemanly behavior.

There are Belgian archives online. You could check out www.arch.arch.be . I'm not sure if you will find anything of use there, but it might give you a starting point.

I don't think this is the family you are looking for. Wm Gent who married Eliza Spivey was the son of John Gent and Ellen Shank who was the first son Wm & Margaret Gent of Pennsylvania. That William lived in Pennsylvania but was born in England to John Hargreaves Gent and Agnes Norris. Wm was born on March 7, 1835 and married Margaret Ratcliffe on Nov 1, 1857. They immigrated to the US in the 1860's. John was born March 7, 1857 in England also but came here as a baby. There are several postings on this board for the right Gent family. I am only distantly connected but can give you more information if you write me at linsfam (at) myfairpoint (dot) net.

I'm not aware of the Michigan connection to this family. They were in PA, WV, Tennessee,& Ohio I believe. Are you in a Michigan branch?

Good luck.

Hello Linda--We have talked before and are cousins. I am the daughter of Robert Gent--gdau of Harvey Gent and ggdau of Ransom Gent. Are you referring to the Joshua Gent born in 1776 who was the brother of Mark/Marcus Gent? I don't have information on his children, but feel free to contact me at chcolate2769@msn.com.

Anita Gent Brackensick

William Gent was born in Chorley, England and grew up in Adlington, Lancashire, England. He immigrated to the US about 1886. He married Mary Agnes Flood in the Boston area and had four sons who were raised in Hull, Massachusetts, William Frederick Gent, Herbert F Gent, Raymond Whitfield Gent, and Edward Owen Gent. Wm was naturalized in 1892. William's son, William Frederick, was career military, living in many places. I am looking for his son, William Robert's family in Nevada.

Thanks for explaining. It makes sense as Augusta's name was Fish when she married Roy. I thought that Fish might be a previous marriage as other records show her maiden name as Barto, but I couldn't be sure. That is probably still the right 1920 census for them, but the rest of the info wouldn't be blood relatives. I assume Marion might also be a stepchild with Ruth being Roy and Augusta's together as she was born after their marriage. It solves the question of whether the first two children were from Roy's first marriage. If you ever find them in 1930, please let me know. I haven't been able to find them after years of searching.

Good luck in your search.

Roy had cousins in the Seattle area as well. There were two different Gent families there. Roy's father, Daniel, and Daniel's brother, Thomas both came to the US from England. Both families were living in Ohio at one time. All of Daniel's family went to Washington. Only part of his brother's family went to Washington with the rest remaining in Ohio.

Roy's sister's married names are as follows in case it helps jog someone's memory.

Belinda married Walter Baxter
Lena married Ralph Ruffalo
Drexel married Earl Justice

Good luck,
Linda

This is the information I have on Roy to help your search. There could be other Richards in Washington, but I didn’t find any others of this age, and I don’t have the middle initial J on any of my records. First I've listed the censuses when Roy was living at home with his parents, then in 1920 after he married and had his own children. Perhaps some family member will remember one of Roy's brothers or sisters as one of their great aunts or uncles.

1900 Census ED 8 Page/Sheet 5
Pecise Township, Bridgeport Precinct, Belmont Co, Ohio
Daniel S Gent / Head / W / M / Oct 1859 / 40 / Mar 19 yrs / Eng / Eng / Eng / Imm 1879 / 21 yrs / Alien / Coal Miner
Margaret Gent / Wife / W / F / Oct 1861 / 38 / Mar 19 yrs / 6 of 7 children living / Eng / Eng / Eng / Imm 1881 / 19 yrs here / None
Oscar Gent / Son / W / M / May 1884 / 16 / S / Ohio / Eng /Eng / Coal Miner
Belinda Gent / Daur / W / F / June 1886 / 13 / S / Ohio / Eng /Eng / At School
Roy Gent / Son / W / M / Nov 1889 / 10 / S / Ohio / Eng /Eng / At School
Howard Gent / Son / W / M / Sept 1891/ 8 / S / Ohio / Eng /Eng / None
Lena Gent / Daur / W / F / Mar 1894 / 6 / S / Ohio / Eng /Eng / None
Drexel J Gent / Son / W / M / Apr 1896 / 4 / S / Ohio / Eng /Eng / None (Drexel should be daughter, not son.)

1910 Census ED 40
Mountain View Precinct, King Co, Washington
Daniel S Gent / Head / M / W / 50 / M1 for 28 yrs / Eng / Eng / Eng / Imm 1881 / NA / Store Keeper - Rail Road
Margaret J Gent / Wife / F / W / 48 / M1 for 28 yrs / 6 of 9 children living / Eng / Eng / Eng / Imm 1882 / None
Roy R Gent / Son / M / W / 20 / S / Ohio / Eng /Eng / Pressman – Printing Office?
Lena M? Perhaps Roy was in the service in California as two of the children were born there.

Looking at two of Roy’s children, Richard and Ruth, you can perhaps get a clue as to your connection. Ruth was married in Skagit Co where you find your Richard J is buried. Also, Roy died in Anacortes, Skagit Co. though he was buried in Seattle where his parents and brothers were buried.

If you have or get Richard’s obituary, you might be able to match up sister’s names or something like that.
I will certainly try and find out more.

I have not heard of a Roy Gent, but I have only just started researching my lineage. So perhaps Roy is a relative. I will let you know if any in my family have any such info. Certainly very interesting stuff, all the best, Dirk.

How do you connect to this family? I'd love to know more about Richard's family if you are related. I'm glad to have confirmation of Frances being Richard's wife. Now I just have to confirm if he belongs in the family of Roy R Gent.

If Roy is Richard's father, I'm not sure if Augusta or Florence is his mother. Roy was married to Florence in 1911 and Augusta in 1917. Since Richard was born in 1913, it would seem that Florence was his mother though I had previously thought it was Augusta as she was Roy's wife on the 1920 census which shows a Richard as a son.

I couldn't find Roy's family on the 1930 census. Do you have him in 1930?

If Roy is Richard's father, then Daniel & Margaret are his grandparents. I can take you back three more generations in England if you are interested.

Lan-OPC is the best site for confirming relationships with parish records. It doesn't yet have ALL the Gents in Chorley though. There are lots of them. Who were your Ellen's parents? You had another post for a marriage to William Brown. Are you also connected to the Ellen who married Wm Brown in 1846?

Chorley Gents seem to break down into two VERY large families. Who are some of your other Gents?
