Re your message to Allison
Interesting your mention of the marriage to Christine Marshall. I vaguely recall my dad mentioning that name - but I always thought the Marshall's were neighbours, not relatives. Could well be that there was a marriage connection as well! To bad our ancestors aren't here to clarify such details for us!
glenda

Hi Glenda
I read your post with interest and it motivated me to have a look at my great great grandfathers' siblings.

If you take a look at my post to Allison, you will see that I agree with your research. I am very sure that we too are related through your great grandfather, Thomas Gentleman, and my great great grandfather, his brother, John Gentleman. It would be lovely to make a personal contact with you, so if you are agreeable, please send me an email on my work address in the first instance at elaine.lennox@fife.gov.uk

You will see also on my post to Allison that I am intrigued by my findings re yet another brother, Robert Gentleman! Any ideas on that one?

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Elaine.

Hi Allison
I have finally found some time to get into my research again. I do hope you pick up this post. I am absolutely sure we are related through our great great grandfathers, James and John Gentleman respectively. and I would love to make a personal contact with you, if you are agreeable. This would be best done through my work email in the first instance. It is: elaine.lennox@fife.gov.uk
Please drop me a line at that address and we can take it from there.

Today I have been investigating James and John's siblings. I agree with Glenda's post, in that I have tracked down Alexander, Mary, Thomas and William. However there also seems to be a Robert. This would make sense as the eldest boy was often called after the father or grandfather. I cannot find a birth certificate, but have found a death certificate which gives his parents as Robert Gentleman and Mary McFarlane. He died 3rd July 1855, aged 50 years. This would mean he was born circa 1805 - the same year as your James!! Were they just very close in age? Could they have been twins? (My great grandfather James Gentleman was a twin.) Or is there some other explanation? Intriguing! I have also found his marriage banns in 1830 to Christian (Christina) Marshall. Any ideas?

I think I can go back even further.

Do get in touch,
Elaine.
Dear Allison
It's great to hear from you after all this time! I was so excited when I discovered the connection and then of course I realised I might never hear from you. At that time I even looked up the international Yellow Pages and wrote to all the Mulligans in Vancouver, but not one reply! So this is absolutely amazing!! At the moment I have picked up your message via an email from ancestry.com and I am on holiday on the island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean. I will be home by the week-end, but have a wedding to go to, so it may be the following week-end before I am in touch again. (Work will get in the way!) Like you, I haven't done much research recently, so need to get back in to my papers. However I am absolutely delighted to have heard from you and will definitely be back in communication. I would love to get to know you, if you are willing to share. I'm not sure how we take this forward, but will look into it further once I get home. You have made my day - and given me something to look forward to when I get home! Have a good week. All the best, Elaine.

Hi Glenda,
I just read your message from 2008 and we do indeed have a connection. I did a lot of research a few years back and then took a break from it. Just lately I've got in to it again. My great, great, great grandfather was Robert Gentleman, born Feb. 20, 774 - his son James was my great, great grandfather.
I live in Canada and when I first visited Tillicoultry and started to look through church graves stones, the first one I noticed was for a Thomas Gentleman, died Dec. 1890. Later in my research I found out that he was one of James' siblings.
So there's the connection.
I'm only sorry that I haven't been looking for messages for a few years. I hope you are still monitoring this site - I would like to hear from you. I'll watch for a reply.
Regards,
Allison
Hi Elaine: Wow! I just now read your message posted in 2006 I think. I had not done any research for a few years and lately have got interested in it again. I was telling a friend about it and he has just phoned me and said he googled Gentleman and Tillicoultry and found your message which he e-mailed to me.
Yes, indeed I believe my great, great, great grandfather was Robert Gentleman born Feb. 20, 1774. His son, James, was my great great grandfather - brother to John, your GG grandfather. Just this evening I was going through my notes: census, certificates, etc. etc. and my head is swirling with the information. I have lots of questions and would love to go to Edinburgh again to visit the Registry Office and visit Tillicoultry again. I live in North Vancouver, B.C. Canada.
I do hope you are still monitoring this site and I'm sorry it has taken so long for me to find you. I will anxiously watch for a reply.
Regards,
Allison
In my records she is the daughter of Matthew Gentleman and Emily Gentlement (nee Reeder) and she was born in 1871, The resided at Tofftrees Road, Norfolk, England.

I hope this information helps - although you probably already have it.
Hello,
I would appreciate any information you or your Grandfather has on the Ballyheigue clan. My Great Great Grandmother was Julia Gentleman. I first find her in Delaware Ohio in 1860, with I believe another family of Gentlemans who arrived there in the 1860's. From the USA Census's I know she was from the Irish Free State and born about 1840 +/- 2 years, and from her death record her fathers name was Frank (Francis?). A very knowledgable and kind man from Ireland has helped me narrow her origin to Ballheigue. I have written to the parish preist there to see if he could help me with any baptismal records but have heard nothing back.

If your grandfather has any information on the family from that area, it might provide other clues. I am told this is a very uncommon name and it may be that we are very distant relations. Happy to share what I have on the USA Gentlemans if any are related to you.

In advance, thank you

Jim
shellmarketer@yahoo.com

My family is descended from the Gentleman family of Ballyheigue. It's my understanding that two brothers, Peter and Robert left the area in the late 1800's. Robert returned to Ireland, and the family in Co. Kerry and Dublin are descended from him. Peter settled in the area of Chicago, IL. He had several sons, but only my great-grandfather, William, produced children. My grandfather has some records, which I can try to get and post here.

It seems that they all moved in different directions. I tried to trace back to Ireland but I had more info than they were able to give me. Apparently, they had a fire and many records were lost.

Janet

Re: John Gentleman

Hello all,
Our common surname has a very simple genesis...........at first blush!

It originates in the Stuart (French spellng), or Stewart (Scottish spelling) in the middle ages. Mary, Queen of Scots, was born in the town of my birth and upbringing - Linlithgow, Scotland. She was born, as was her father, King James, in Linlithgow Palace. The enemy at that time were the English. The allies at that time were the French. The Scottish Royal Court of the Stuarts could only speak Norman French, thus Mary's Royal Court consisted of mainly Norman-French people. The head of this Royal Court was known as the 'gentilhomme de la Court Royale'. The 'gentilhomme is the clue. It literally translates into 'The Gentleman of the Royal Court , responsible for the day-to-day running and orderly fashion of the Royal Court. All this while, John Knox was transforming Scotland from a Catholic country into a Protestant one. The Stuart royal dynasty were very much Catholic. It took Knox, a fearsome character, just over a year to accomplish it. Meanwhile Mary's cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England, was also busily transforming England into a Protestant one, albeit in a slightly different fashion. To this day Scots are mainly Presbyterian, whilst the English are Anglican. Whatever, Mary ended up 'losing her head' (literally) and consequently the throne of Scotland, which ultimately led to the 'Union of the Crowns'. The gentilhomme's melded into local society and anglicised their names to Gentleman. Those who wished to continue pursuing their Catholic faith largely migrated to Ireland (though some returned to France). That's why the surname, whilst still unusual, can be encountered in both Scotland and Ireland.

There are many 'Gentlemans' to be found in London and the the south-east of England - but their genesis is quite different. The majority of these peoples' names can be traced back to the Jewish 'Pale' which prior to WW11, was a geographic enclave including parts of Germany, Poland, Belorussia and the (now) Czech Republic. Their Yiddish names were Gentelmann which was easily anglicised to Gentleman - for those who were fortunate enough to escape the Nazis and seek refuge in England.

Hope I've been of some help.

I'm now resident in Australia and there's a few of us here too!
Julia (and Ray and Steve and all others),
We may have corresponded in the past as I was looking for George and Margaret Gentleman, who travelled on the Lady Russell in 1857 with daughters Julia and Ann from Tralee to the USA. They settled in Delaware, Ohio. This has been a stone wall as I have no other information on George prior to the Lady Russell sailing. I am related through Julia.

Just learned that in the 1870 US Federal Census that George is called John Gentleman, married to Margaret. George is 70 in 1870 and Margaret (Mary?) is 60.

I also have wondered why William Gentleman settled in Delaware, but possibly to be with his father John (which is mentioned on this board in an old post.) This might explain why so many Gentlemans in a small town, far from Ireland.

It may be that I have been looking for George all these years and should have been looking for John!

Would appreciate any replies on the Gentleman's from Ireland and Delaware, Ohio.
I would like a picture of the cemetary markers please. I have some info on the Gentleman Family that my mother in law just sent me. Not sure if it helps you or not. Here is what she wrote: How interesting. Of course, you know that Cyril was Jack's dad and I remember visiting his sister Ruth while she lived in Omaha but when her husband passed away she moved to California but don't know the year, to live with her daughter. Colleen would know more about that than I do. I have some, but not much information on all of that. I have more information on Marguerite's side (Dineen) family than on Cyrils. Shawn's middle name is Dineen.

Any iformation you could share with me would be great.
Thanks
Alberta
I'm not certain that I have the right connections, but my current findings are that I too am related to Robert Gentleman and Mary McFarlane by way of their son Thomas Gentleman born 06 Jul 1810 - deceased 27 Oct 1890 Parish of Tillicoultry age 83. His siblings(I think)include James DOB 18 Jul 1805, William DOB 27 Jan 1808, Alexander DOB22 Jun 1812, John DOB 25 Apr 1815 and Mary DOB 06 May 1819.
Thomas (my relation) married Janet Russel 31 Dec 1857. They had four children Robert, Janet Walker, William Russel Gentleman (my grandfather DOB 18 Dec 1863) and Mary Helen. William Russel married Annie Cowan McNaughtan.....they had five children.......my dad being one of them. William Donald Gentleman. Do you think this is the right connection? Would love to hear more from you if you think it is!!
Glenda Gentleman
