I am looking for any information on my Great Great Great Grandmother, Elizabeth S. Gentry. She was born about 1825 in Georgia (possibly Hancock County) and died in 1896 in Georgia (most likely Floyd County). She was married to Simeon Douglas McClendon (McLendon). Her sister, Americus was Simeon's first wife. I'm trying to find out who her parents were and where they were born. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder if William M. Gentry (STB born 1832) was a nephew of James Gentry, a son of his brother William. James was married to Susannah Hawkins 8 Apr 1833 in Sullivan Co., IN according to a certificate there which would suggest that William was not a son of Susannah even allowing some slack for census ages. James is known to have been living in Henderson Co., KY in 1825. In the 1820 and 1830 Henderson Co. census there is a William Gentry who has been suggested as being the oldest son of Merle Lee Gentry, and a brother of James. The age and the name for William M Gentry would fit this scenario very well.

Bill Gentry

I'm having difficulty with this one. As I read Andrew Jackson Gentry's death certificate, it looks as if his mother's name as listed is Susan Lewis - not Susannah Hawkins. This info was attested to by Mrs. M.F. (Mary Francis) Gentry - his wife. I've not been able to locate any of the other death certificates yet.

Is is possible that James was married more than once?

I'm wondering if this is the same James Gentry.

I may have made mistake on previous reply regarding my line of descent from Thomas J Gentry. Thomas J & Sarah Elizabeth had son John T. Gentry. John T Gentry married Easter Carolina Satterfield. They had a daughter Nancy Elizabeth that married Noble Brown. This couple were my great grandparents. I, in fact, am named after my great grandmother.
So, Thomas J is my 3rd great grandfather not my 2nd great grandfather.

I know this post made sometime ago, but I have information on Henry Allen Gentry's parents. Henry Allen Gentry was born 1 Dec 1861 to James H. Gentry and Anna Miller. Henry also had a sister Sarah Ann Gentry, who married John Schmitt on 27 Mar 1879, (I have'nt been able to find her after the marriage that took place at Bolckow, Andrew, Misouri). James H Gentry died 4 Dec 1862 in Wayne County, Missouri. He was serving on the Union side of the Civil War. His wife Anna Miller Gentry married Samuel C. Broderick March 31, 1867. I have more info and a copy of death certificate for Henry Allen Gentry and Photo of the family.

I was saying that where the certificate gave the father's place of birth as Georgia, that one item conflicts with the statement in the 1850 census.

Incidentally, I mispoke in saying Cheruby may have been Thomas' step-grandmother. It would be his step-mother.

Peggy is listed on the 1860 cens as a 2 year old. Also, the Nancy E. Gilly that appears with this family was a child of the first couple on the same page where Thomas J Gentry appears. The 1870 cens..the first child listed, the name was not spelled correctly, this was Lorenzo Gentry, the second child was Louisa or Peggy Gentry. Lorenzo died in 1882. Thomas J, Sarah Elizabeth ( Bette )and Lorenzo Gentry are buried at Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery, Haralson County, Georgia.

You seem to be saying that whoever informed the medical examiner about Peggy Gentry's death certificate lied. That doesn't seem plausible, to me. She died in Alabama. Whoever was there with her reporting on her death must have believed that she was the daughter of Thomas J. Gentry.

If the person reporting on her death was wrong, it seems to be a huge coincidence that the person provided actual names of real people from Peggy's home town. Even if Peggy is not a descendant of Thomas Gentry, there seems to be a tradition that she was.

I am actually working on an alternate theory. There is a tradition in my family of Cherokee descent. Peggy does not show up on the 1860 census, but she is there plain as day on the 1970 census, as a 14 year old. Any chance she was an abandoned or orphaned Cherokee?

In the 1850 census for Paulding Co., GA, you find Jefferson Jentry and Elizabeth, both age 19, with a son John T. This is Thomas J. Gentry I am sure. The census has his place of birth as TN, that of his wife (Elizabeth Carnes) as GA. I believe the census is right and not the death certificate information for the father of Peggy Gentry. They were living next to a widow, Cheruby Gentry, who I believe was the step-grandmother of Thomas. My evaluation has been that Cheruby was the second wife of Allen Gentry of McMinn Co.TN (see http://www.gentryjournal.org/archives/jgg05a.htm - he would be Allen-B of the five Allens discussed).

Okay, I know it has been a while since this thread was posted, but I'm stuck and I need some help if anyone has made further progress on this.

I am descended from Peggy Adeline Gentry (who married Miles Thomas Mosley). The record of her death, as recorded in "Alabama Deaths and Burials Index, 1881-1974", shows her husband as Miles T. Mosley, which is how I know she is the correct Peggy Adeline. However, the death record lists her parents as Thomas J. Gentry and Betty Carnes, and she was born in Georgia. That can't be a coincidence.

Does anyone have a Peggy (or perhaps a Margaret) as a daughter of Thomas J. Gentry and Betty Carnes? And, if so, do you have any sources for it?

My grandfather was Jerome G Gentry. I found on a record which identifies the G as Gerrales and this is consistent with the family lore that his mother was in fact Spanish. I have found her name as Elizabeth Whitney. The problem is that is not a Spanish surname nor is the other name which according to family lore was Whitman. I have seen a tin photo plate of her and she most definitely looks either Spanish or Latina. Does anyone have information on Jonathan or Elizabeth and if this helpful the census spells Gentry as Jentrie and this true for his Confederate military service.
