Does anyone know of a lady by the surname of Geraghty who went to England from Ireland in the 1950's for a short time but may have then returned to Ireland? Also she subsequently altered, slightly , the spelling of her original maiden name of Geraghty. But I don't know what version she changed it to?

Hi Folks, I have been following with interest the comments about your Geraghty family. I know that Willie Geragthy lived in a small house on the corner of the Crossroads and Hillside Road. His wife unfortunately died at an early age leaving quite a young family. His brother and hi family lived on Main Street next to in my time was Mrs. Gaynor's. I believe that they were also related to the Guirans (spelling)who lived in the Crossroads almost opposite the courthouse. May G had a pronounced limp and worked for the Crowe's as did Eileen Geraghty from Main Street. What I am uncertain about is Paddy Geraghty and where he lived in Killaloe. From my knowledge the Geraghty's I am thinking of were always in Killaloe at least as long as I can remember. So perhaps it may be a different family. But the description of losing a mother early in life certainly fits Willie.

Hi,
I am researching a Patrick Geraghty born Ahascragh, Ireland. He married 1. Sabina Hennessay in Galway and had one son, John, Patrick and Sabina with John arrived on "Intrinsic" in 1841 to Melbourne. A daughter had been born during voyage and died at aged 3 days. Sabina must have died shortly after arrival (death not found yet) but Patrick went onto marry Honora Clarke in 1843 and had 8 children: Michael, Thomas, James, William Patrick, Mary, Honora, Bridget.

I have done quite extensive research on this family and have a number of certificates to prove facts.

I am a descendant of William Geraghty 2/0 Patrick.

Colleen Gould

Looking for Thomas Geraghty (Garity, Gerity) born about 1847 Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Son of Patrick Geraghty born C. 1822 Ahascragh, Galway and Honora nee Clarke born c. 1818 Ahascragh, Galway.

Thomas is said to have left Melbourne after a family dispute - probably late 1880's early 1890's and sailed to America. However, the suspicion is that alternatively he went to New Zealand.

Thomas Geraghty, b 1825 IRE died 1880 Scranton PA, married Margaret

Hi all,

Doing a bit of research on my great-great-grandmother. Margaret Geraghty died Dec 1907. She was born on an unknown day in 1824 in Ireland, daughter of Thomas Gibbons & Jennie Connolly, both born in Ireland.

Thomas Geraghty is listed on the 1860 Lackawana Twp census,

Thomas Geraghty
Margaret Geraghty
The following 3 are Margaret's daughters, most likely from a former marriage:
Bridget McNally (born 1848 in Ireland)
Mary J McNally (born 1850 in Ireland)
Ellen McNally (born 1852 in Meshoppen, PA)

In the 1880 and 1900 census, Margaret Geraghty (sometimes spelled Gerrity) are listed with my great greandfather Thomas Loughney and Ellen Loughney (listed as her daughter). In 1920, Mary Jane McNally lived with my grandfather, John J. Loughney, and listed as his aunt.

Bridget McNally is listed as 'insane' on the census.

Thomas died on March 1880 of inflammation of the liver, and was a coal miner. He's listed as married, with a family of 6.

I cannot find any of the family on the 1870 Census. In the 1880 census, the rest of the family lived in Minooka PA.

Finally, the 1910 census lists Ellen's mother as being born in Ireland and mother tongue is English. Husband Thomas is listed as born in Ireland but mother toungue is Irish.

If anyone has any extra information on any of the above, I would greatly appreciated

It's possible that Patrick Geraghty was the father of John Patrick Geraghty, who had two sisters living in Port Sunlight. John Patrick lived eventually in Watford, Hertfordshire and died in 1944. If you have any relevant information I'd be grateful!

GERAGHTYS - DUBLIN 1800s

Hello all,

Im hoping to connect with others that may be researching Geraghtys in Dublin through the 19th century. My family are from the South Cumberland St. Dublin..My G Grand father Thomas Geraghty etc based there from late 1800s till at least 1920s. There are lots of Geraghtys on that street in varius records so im trying to find the links.
Thomas' father was Laurence Geraghty (Stationer)who married Matilda O Grady in 1867 on the Northside..seems they lived over that way at the time also. Laurences father was Peter(Farmer) who I have no info on. Was Peter a rural Dublin farmer or did he move to the City during the famine.???

So anyone who maybe linked to Thomas Geraghty, of South Cumberland Street, Born of Laurence & Matilda Geraghty (Northside?)Laurence born of Peter Geraghty & ???...Get in touch.

Sláinte

Cathal Mac Oirechtaigh
eire

Hello,

I am looking for anyone with information concerning Patrick Garrity. His wife's name was Catherine Nokely, born about 1841. They migrated to Cheshire then Lancashire. We believe Patrick died around 1890 in or near Oldham, England.

Catherine's census record in 1901 lists her place of birth as Mylock, Ireland. I am interpreting this to be Moylough. (Pervious censuses had their place of birth as simply Galway, Ireland.)

Any information on these people would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
Patrick Hakes

Re: Lawrence Geraghty Clayton IA/ West Main Ireland

Hi Linda,
I am also researching Lawrence Geraghty/Garrity. He would have been born c1839 Ireland (town unknown). COULD THIS BE YOUR LAWRENCE'S SON? He was in New York in 1866 and had a son James born that year. He also had a daughter Anna/Annie born 1869. I have a birth cert for Anna but unable to find one for James. Mother is Elizabeth (nee Davis or Steward born 1841 Canada) and was living in Leeds, Yorkshire England between 1851 and 1861, then ended up with Lawrence living in New York, New York between 1861 and 1870.
Lawrence is my g.g.grandfather.
I hit a brick wall 10 years ago and have been stuck ever since.
Lawrence's wife/partner Elizabeth returned to Leeds, Yorkshire England with their two children as they appear on the 1871 UK census but without Lawrence!!!!

Anna's birth cert states parents as Lawrence Garrity and Elizabeth Garrity, they may not have actually married as no marriage cert can be found nor a death cert for Lawrence.
Elizabeth, my g.g.grandmother was married in England to Daniel/Donald Steward before possibly running off to the U.S. where she met Lawrence. When Elizabeth returned to Leeds in the U.K. she kept the names of James and Anna Garrity but reverted back to her married name of Steward and ended up back with her husband Daniel/Donald.

I have chosen to write to you as children were often named after their parents so my Lawrence could be the son of your ancester. This is a long shot as I do not even have details of any siblings but my Lawrence named his son James, maybe after his sibling, again one of your ancesters. I am a direct decendent of James Garrity my g.grandfather and believe Lawrence must have been a special person as James and Anna/Annie's older half brother and sister took the name of Garrity rather than their birth name of Steward.

If you or anyone who reads this can make a connection, I would dearly love to hear from you.

Maureen

Ellen, my second cousin is a nephew of May and Pappy Geraghty's. He, his wife and kids live part time in Dublin, where their children go to school. That's where they are right now. I don't know the Pappy Geraghty family very well, but he does!- and he's very much into genealogy. I forwarded this string of messages to him just now, so you should be hearing from him soon.

Mary Ann

Yes! That's the family! My husband's grandmother was Delia Geraghty (changed to Garrity in the US)and Pappy was her brother and Patrick and Sally were her parents. She married Martin Jennings, of Ranaghy, in Chicago in 1915.

Are you interested in the American Geraghty/Garrity family? I've been working with Pat Delaney (Delia's grandson) and would be happy to share with you all the information I have.

Whatever you could tell me would be awesome!

Thanks so much, Mary Ann!

Best,
Ellen

p.s. Feel free to email me directly: e.jennings@comcast.net

Hi, Ellen,

Is this the Patrick "Pappy" Geraghty of Cuilmore who married Mary "May" Geraghty, daughter of James Geraghty and Alice Moran, of Lecarrow (Carrackaneady)? This Patrick "Pappy" Geraghty was born in 1897, died Feb 23, 1988. His parents were Patrick Geraghty and Sarah Gallagher. If this is the right "Pappy", I can definitely put you in touch with the family.
