Mary Louise(German) and Willis Alonzo Blake were my grandparents. Mary German was daughter of Thomas Didemus German II, who was a brother of John German. I have a copy of an article written by a History Professor at Georgia Southern University about the John German family's westward migration, and it includes a lot of information about the lives of daughters, Catherine, Sophia, Julia and Adelaide after they were rescued. It also mentions that the bodies of John German, his wife, son and two daughters who were killed by the indians, were removed by the U.S. Army in 1875 and were reburied in the old Fort Wallace, Kansas cemetery. In July 1957, German family members from Georgia, Kansas, California and Oregon gathered to pay homage to the spirit of the German family. Wish I had known about it in 1957. What a sad but inspiring story of endurance and courage.

According to the DNA results I cannot be paternally related to the Wilkes Co. GERMAN family. See my sample #1543

I've not seen the book by the late Lawrence German and can't comment upon his conclusions before I see his evidence. One thing I think the DNA is telling us is that whoever the ancestor of the Wilkes Co GERMANs that travled to NC probably left relatives behind in PA or NY.

Oh, that's good. Wow - that is interesting. I was raised in NY.
According to our family tree, compiled by Lawrence J. German, Johan Garman/Germann came to America via Pennsylvania and then south to Wilkes County. He then went by the name John German (father of Thomas G., grandfather of Charles.) Do you know of this book and is it possible we are related? I am the daughter of Phyllis Ann German (daughter of Dennis Larkin German of Blue Ridge, GA. - A direct descendant of Charles.)

Thank you for that information!

Thats not what I'm sayig at all.

The DNA results mean the Wilkes County, NC, German family - including Charles German's descendants share a common ancestor with a German family in colonial New York. This means further traditional research should be looking for those families' connections - I would guess the Wilkes Co Germans have colonial ancestors in the north - maybe New York, or perhaps in Pennsylvania. The DNA connection is a clue.

Hi Carol,
My gradmother Goldie told me she was buried at Maxey. It seems strange, during that time, that she would have been transported to Mo, but you never know what you will find doing research. My grandmother Goldie told me that her mother rode home on a horse after seeing a patient, said she was sick and going to die and made a beautiful black dress to be buried in. She also said that a son of Johanna's was ill at the same time and later died.

Hi Karen.. Johanna has kept me intriqued. Found out about the German Massacre and was interesting reading. Not part of Johanna's family though. They seemed to have moved aroud quite a bit. Parents of Johanna living in Washinton Stae at the end of their lives. Wonder where she is buried. Not at Little Maxie where John Wesley and a child that died early are buried. alooked in Fanshaw cementary and found several Cutsingers including your grandmother,Goldie. has been a long time since we were there. Will go again soon. Saw something about she might be buried in Mo.
