The documentation comes from the cemetery besides the interred their is a document listing the family members that hgave inherited the cemetery plot ending in 1944 with Helen Vetter who is the daughter of Garret Frank Gerow of Newark , NJ. Garret Smith bought the plot in 1850 (check the first names) and his sister was Deborah A Gerow. Looks like the Smiths married into the Gerow family. The heirs of Deborah were: William H Gerow d.1924 no issue, Catherine Riggs, d 1929,Samuel E Gerow (not buried in this plot) leaves 5 children, Garrit F Gerow d.1930 leaves 3 children-they are all from Belleville or Newark , NJ. The first folks buried in the plot are Rachel and Andrew Smith in 1849 and then Martin Smith in 1852 and a Marian Smith in 1853 (no idea who they are) The first Warren is buried there in 1852-James M Warren an infant from NYC. All the Warrens hail from Burlington NJ via England in the 1630's , they are all originally Quakers and at least my line makes its way to New York City (no longer Quakers). The cemetery is really good for providing information (for a moderate fee) I only paid for the Warren line and was given age at death, cause of death, place of birth, place of death , funeral home, occupation. If you want to pursue this I would be happy to split the cost- you can call 718 277 2900 or e mail cypresshillscemetery01@juno.com

Thank you for your response to my inquiry. Not familiar with the Warren name so I am interested where my relative received the name from. Curious. Very interested in knowing about the Gerows you have listed...all from Brooklyn. There was a whole tribe of Gerows from New Brunswick, Canada, but I could never tie my family into them. This group may have come down from New Brunswick. Love to hear more from you.

Bill Gerow

Not sure I'm related to Gerows but definitely to Warren's. So, I was interested in your ancestors middle name of Warren.
I have an internment record from Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY, there are 25 people interred in this plot (I've visited, no headstones-just a large fenced off plot of grass). Eight of the folks are Gerows seven are Warrens, 3 Smith's and 3 Guests. I am related to the Warrens and the Guests. Here is a list of the Gerows: John H., James A., Euphemia,Hiram E., George W. , Deborah A., William H., Garret Frank Gerow (this last does have a small marker date 1930). I have dates of burial and some info on who bought the plot in 1850. Most interested in how they are all connected??

Supposedly he was born in PA. But can't find anything. Wonder if you're related with your name being John?

I'm glad to hear that you were successful with Cypress Hills. Most times the cemetery itself has the best information. The next thing you might want to do is to try to obtain birth, marriage, and death records. There also may have been a posting in a local newspaper about these family members also. I find historical societies, geneological societies, and main public libraries with a geneological section are the best to request information from.If you are anywhere near New York City the NY genealogical & Biographical Society offers various classes on geneological research. Their phone number is # 212-755-8532. Hope this bit of information helps. Regards, Frank.

thank you frankdukesPI, yes, Cypress Hills was very helpful and I have all the burial dates for the Gerows there. I looked back through previous posts and was intrigued by a post in 1999 which listed a George Warren Gerow. Seems more than coincidental that the middle name should be the same as the Warrens that are buried in the same Cypress Hills plot huh? I'll keep searching for the connection. The cemetery plot was passed on from Smith's to Gerow's in ownership, according to Cypress Hills.

Im thinking that the Warren family and the Gerow Family were
related thru Marriage some time back. Did you contact Cypress Hills Cemetery and request the burial dates of each nname mentioned. I believe that NYC Records for births and deaths start around the 1860's. If you know the religious background the NY Public Library Geneological Section, the NY Geneological & Biographical Society, or the NY Historical Society (all located in Manhattan) could help
you in your research. The Original Gerows came from France, moved to Canada, and then to New York, and Michigan. The Huguenot Society may also be able to help you with your research.

I'm trying to link my family of Warrens with a family of Gerows who appear to be buried together at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn. The plot was purchased in 1850 by Garrett Smith (Rachel, Andrew, Martin ,Marian, are Smiths buried there). John H, James A, Euphemia, Hiram, Deborah A, Garrett Frank, are Gerows buried there. Catherine, Catherine A, Stannard, John H, Bridgett, Almira, John H, Caleb C, are all Warrens. I'm familiar with the Warrens but can't figure out the Gerow connection. Last burial was Garrett Frank Gerow in 1930 of East Orange N.J.There are no headstones expect for Garrett Frank, the plot is a large grassy section.

I've got copies of all of the death certificates that PA had. I don't know if there's anything in probate in Wellsboro that we don't already know.

My grandmother is still alive and well so I'll see what if anything she may know about Markus and Pheobe.

She was pretty young when my great-grandfather died but there were lots of reunions where everyone was there (some of the pictures I've posted) I'll see if my mother has any other pictures- she has all of the photo albums from my great-aunt Loreine the oldest of the siblings.

Jenn

Hi Jennifer,

I have lots of questions, but the most important issue I have is to get primary proof that Denton Gerow was the son of Bailey. Usually a death record will show the parents name, but PA did not record deaths officially until 1893, after Denton's death.

I am curious about Marcus's death at an early age.
I know Pheobe left Frank Kholer (DeWitts letter) and I think she died shortly after at a young age.

Any history about their time in Hector would be good.

I have censuses and a lot on DeWitt, from online posts. But no family pictures except the ones in DeWitts line that are online.

I live in FL and can't go to the Court House or Library Genealogy Room in Wellsboro, but I would be interested in an old photo of Whitneyville as well.

Any help would be appreciated.
This information is in Vol 1 of "The Gerow-Giraud Family in America," published in 1981 by the Huguenot Historical Society (HHS) in New Paltz, NY. While Vol. I of "The Gerow-Giraud Family in America" is not absolutely completely, it seems to be accurate.

The Gerow Family Association (GFA), affiliated with the Huguenot Historical Society in New Paltz, publishes a newsletter, of which I was the editor for twenty years. For more information on the GFA you could check the HHS websiste http://www.huguenotstreet.org/ and find the GFA by clicking first on "About", then on "Family Associations"

David Wilkin in Wooster, OH
