My name is Bernie Turner and my wife is Susan. Col. Timothy and Sarah Eliot Gerrish are her fifth great grand parents. This weekend we went to Gerrish island to locate the grave of the Col. and Sarah. With some help of a local we were successful. We are very much interested in locating the home that William Gerrish lived in. I see by your posting you live close to it. Could you give us directions? We have made two visit to the town and look forwarding to returning.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Bernie Turner

Bangor, Maine

I just read that someone had visited the grave of Timothy Gerrish on Gerrish island. My wife and I went looking for it a few weeks ago but could not identify the location. I thought I had the correct residence but no one was home and did not wish to enter the property without permission. Looking for further directions.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for contacting me again. This past year has not been good. My mother's younger brother Russell Gerrish passed away a year ago Feb., my father unexpectedly passed away in July and my mother's older brother Charles Gerrish passed away in October! In all of the turmoil, the envelope I had with all of the information you sent was accidently put in with my father's papers and just surface - I thought I had lost it. My daughter graduates from her University in May and after that I should have some time to fill in some of the blanks in our family for you!

I'm also looking forward to getting up very early to watch the BIG event on your side of the pond later this month!

Kathy

Joan Gerrish

William Gerrish of Newbury mar. in 1645 Joan, widow of John Oliver. She is called "sister" in the will of John Lowell (1647) and one of my "brethren" in the will of John's second wife, Elizabeth (Goodale)in 1650/1. Most have claimed that she was thus a Lowell (with their illustrious ancestry), others that she was a Goodale. Neither seems to be fully proved. Is there another possibility - that she was a sister of John Lowell's first wife, Mary (particularly as John refers to her in his will in connection as being a guardian to his daughter Mary in case she does not agree to live with her stepmother)? Mary Lowell's surname is not proven - but she may be the Mary Baugh who married John Lowell 30 Nov. 1630 in Bristol All Saints. There was a Joane "Bath" (Baugh?) who married John Oliver in Westbury-on-Trym, Glouc. (just outside of Bristol) on 18 Mar. 1638.

Dear Kathy,

Hello Cousin (Probably removed?)

Sorry to possibly disapoint you but my surname is'nt Gerrish
, it's Grant, from Sheffield ,South Yorkshire, UK.

I have to explain, after many years searching for my Grant rellies and getting back to 1764, I've had to retire hurt, due to the many lumps on my head with the continual hitting
upon the proverbial Wall!!! I then went "into other member's of my tree. thank's very much your reply with more family members, I really appreciate it.

Ref my Gt Grandma Gale (Martha Gerrish), I have a "Gale tree" back to 1780, from that :-

James Gale:- Baptized 30th November 1845, Steeple Ashton,
Wiltshire.

Martha Gerrish:- Born 29th October, 1850, Camerton, S/set.

They were Married on the 3rd November 1874 in Camerton
Parish Church, At the time James was living in Sheffield
and working as a Railway Porter, so must have travelled down to wed Martha. I'm assuming they must have moved back up to Sheffield soon after as in the 1881 census they were living at Court 1,Granville Lane, Sheffield.
They had 5 Children all born in Sheffield as follows:-

Ann Elizabeth-- born 1876
Edith----------- " 1877
John Charles---- " 31st July 1879
Mary Ellen------ " 1884
Sarah Jane------ " 1887

Mary Ellen Gale was my Grandma as she Married my Grandad Willis Wilfred Grant in Sheffield .

Don't know if you have any info on James and Jesse in USA
But they're on the 1880 US Census, in Braidwood,Will,
Illionois, ( pity the 1890 US census was destroyed) but I have them on later Census's if required.

All for now Kathy , will be writing you with "Snail Mail"

All the best to you and yours

Peter

Dear Peter

Hi Cousin!

Yes, we are related! My G Grandfather was George Gerrish - the youngest son, born 10/7/1860. His 1st wife was Jane Ann Ludwell. They had 4 children: Florence, Worth, Lambert who died in infancy and Charles.

Their youngest son Charles Gerrish was born 10/18/1883 and emigrated to the US. he was my Grandfather. He had 4 children by his 3rd wife Adah:

1. Charles Gerrish who visited George's youngest daughter by his 3rd wife, Joice (not sure of spelling) Gerrish, right before she died in 1982. All I know is that she was born in Kilmersdon in 1910 and lived on the Jarrett estate in her father's cottage. I don't know what her mother's name was (George's 3rd wife).

2. Beverly Gerrish born 6/19/1928 - my mother
3. Russell Gerrish
4. Wayne Gerrish who visited while stationed in England after WWII

Thank you for the updates.

My list did not have an Abel but I had a stillborn child born March 8, 1853 - could this be him?

My information also said that Jesse took his nephew Worth (my grandfather Charle's older brother) with him to the US and raised him after Worth's mother died in 1884. Worth was born in 1881 so Jesse must have come back for him if Jesse emigrated in 1879.

For your great grandmother, Martha, I don't have her husband's name. As for her children, I have John Gale, Edith Gale and 2 "unknown"

This is very exciting - brings out the anthropologist in me!
My home address is

Kathy Randall
1307 Woodlake CT
Loveland, Ohio 45140
USA

I'd love to keep in touch. My 82 yr. old mother's dream is to visit her father's home in the UK. I don't know when or if a trip will be possible but it would be great if we had a relative to say hi to!

Thank you for responding,

Kathy

Hi,
I am looking for information on Charles Gerrish born Oct. 7th, 1821 at Freshford. He married Ann Broad also of Freshford. they had 11 children - mostly in Camerton. He was my great great grandfather. They lived in the Somerset area so stands to reason they might be related to your branch.

Thank you,
Kathy

Hi,
My grandmother was Maud Gerrish born 1887 and died 1987. I am afraid my chart hasn't got the John Gerrish on it that you are looking for.
My Gran lived in Broughton Gifford and my Dad, Gerald used to spend a lot of time on the family farm there as a child. My 2nd cousin still lives there...Christine Gerrish, daughter of Derek, who was the son of Samuel Gerrish.
best wishes
Linda

I don't know her parents and therefore can't trace back any further. She married William Rose b. 1805, again parents unknown.

I've hit a brick wall and my next step is to go to the area to trawl graveyards.

I'd truly appreciate any information that you may have about my Catherine Gerrish.

Kind regards,

Sarah O'Connor

Joseph Hixon Gerrish of Massachusetts

A GERRISH family in Massachusetts has several members named Joseph Hixon (or Hixson) Gerrish. As a Hixson/Hixon researcher I'm interested in where this middle name came from.

John GERRISH Jr. and his wife Prudence, of Newbury, Mass., had at least five children between 1754 and 1763. The fourth was Joseph Hixon GERRISH, born 1761 (the only one with a middle name). JHG married Betty MOODY. Their son Franklin (b. 1795 Dover, N.H.) married Elizabeth EATON and had Joseph Hixson GERRISH b. 1845 Salisbury, Mass.

Two others may have been related to the previous JHGs.
Joseph Hixon Gerrish was born in 1880 in Newburyport, Mass. (parents Edwin Gerrish & Jennie Stevens). Elizabeth Hickson Gerrish was born in 1880 in Salisbury, Mass. (parents unknown).

I wonder whether John or Prudence had a Hixon ancestor, or what other reason they might have had for choosing the name. Any information or pointers would be welcome.

This is incredible!!! I am ALSO looking for this same Bible in hopes of finding out more information on ELIZA W. (Sanger) Bancroft! I know that she was the daughter of Samuel H. and Eliza Sanger of Sherborn, born in c 1836 (1850 US Census, MA, Sherborn). She married Edward I(saac) Bancroft on August 9, 1855 in Holliston, MA.

Are you a relative of the Bancrofts?

We believe that Edward went up to Montreal, Canada because he appears on a marriage record to Fannie Abbott on August 10, 1858. In the same series of records, we found his death notice on Dec. 3, 1870. His body was transported back to "Fitchburg", which could have meant his hometown of Groton, or even Lowell where he was at the time of his first marriage. Perhaps he was buried with his first wife, Eliza, because his second wife, Fannie, is buried with his daughter, Elizabeth "Lizzie", in Nashua, NH.

Believe me... we are VERY interested in finding out MORE about this group of people!

You can contact me directly at crom-a-boo (at) earthlink (dot) net.

~Glenn

Hello,

I'm hoping to contact one Charles H. Gerrish who is purported to own a bible with some information about Elizabeth Bancroft who was born in Groton Mass. in the early part of the 18th century. Our Elizabeth Bancroft is a bit of a mystery to us and her family did originate in Groton so we'd like to have whatever information this bible contains about her. If anyone knows Mr. Charles Gerrish, I'd be most obliged to be referred to him. Attempts to contact him through posted emails have not been successful. Thank you.

C.
Gerrish Information In Smith / Lunt Family Bible

Hi All -- I've rescued an old Family Bible that probably belonged to Frank W. Smith (b. 1856) and his wife, Harriet B. Lunt (b. 1854). Frank's parents were Wooster Smith and Mary Ann Sergent. Harriet's parents were Daniel Lunt and Julia Ann Bartlett.

Frank and Harriet's wedding certificate (1878)from Newburyport, MA is in the Bible (in GREAT shape), as are some pages of Smith / Gerrish / Sergent family history.

I'm attaching a transcription of the Gerrish Family information. The Bible is in very good condition and was published in 1874.

I'm happy to share this information but am really hoping to find this Bible's extended family and return it home.

Sue sug53@earthlink.net

I noticed that you mentioned Capt. William Gerrish. My father told me that I descended from a Capt. Wm Gerrish in New Hampshire, militia man circa Revolutionary War, and another person named Moses Gerrish (late 1800's). Do you have enough information to possibly fill in those gaps? If we are speaking of the same William, then we are likely related. I would be a descendant on my grandfather's side, which I am trying to sort out. Please let me know anything you may have. So I will repeat my last post and hope to hear from Erica and/or Bruce :-)

I have done quite a bit of research on the William Gerrish Family including Timothy Gerrish who is buried on Gerrish Island in Maine. Google my name and you should find my web sites. I also would be interested in any Gerrish family reunion. I live near the original William Gerrish homestead in Newbury, MA. Thanks!
I am going to Maine this summer (2006) for my family's Gerrish Reunion (we go back to Capt. Wm Gerrish). Where is Gerrish Island at and where can I find more information on it? I hope to be able to visit it!

In 1850, Abigail Gerrish (b. 9 Sep 1814) was living in Durham, Cumberland Co., Maine with her father, Benjamin Gerrish (age 75) and Sally (age 73). She married Leonard Macomber May 1, 1853. In 1860, Leonard (44) and Abigail (46) were living in Dist 15, Durham, Androscoggin Co., Maine with their two children, George L. (11) and Everett L (5). This is from One World Tree on Ancestry.com and from the 1850 and 1860 Censuses.

Benjamin Gerrish was my great x 6 grandfather's brother.

New update, I have been in contact with Mary, Melissa and Saundra. Saundra has gotten married reciently and invited me to the wedding, unfortunately I was unable to attend. Still waiting to make it back to New York to meet my sisters and all of the nieces and nephews. I am still surching for our lost brother, his name is Christian Swanson (Gerrish) His mother named him with her last name rather than our fathers. So, if there is any one that may know anything about how to track him, that would make this part of the surch complete.

Kasey

As noted by others here and in other sources, William Gerrish's life in the colonies and marraige is well documented.

Has anyone ever seen information on his parents or located birth records from England?

Elizabeth Grove Gerrish

Am seeking information about the family of Elizabeth Grove Gerrish. In the Biographical Review of Cass, Schuyler, and Brown Counties (Illinois) pages 466-67, she is listed as married to Swell Gerrish b. March 18, 1809 in Boscawen, New Hampshire. Catherine's parents were Joseph and Catherine (Staley) Groves, he of Baltimore, Maryland, and she of Virginia. Grandfather Jacob Groves was born in Pennsylvania and Grandmother Margaret (Garinger) Groves was born in VA. The unknown author of this biography apparently had first hand knowledge of Catherine's family. If you have information about this family, I would love to hear from you. I would also be happy to share Gerrish information from the book with you. Thanks!
