This is interesting. I found the map drawn by Lardner Gibbon nearly forty years ago in Haymarket,Va. It was in the walls of the attic. I had went along with my ex brother in law looking for whatever we could find. I reached down into the wall and found a leatherbound map of Bolivia.I remember it read "Drawn by Leutenant Lardner A? Gibbon "and dated 1854. I wish it hadn't been destroyed by the kids.I would have loved to have given it to the family.

Lardner was the oldest brother - he served the confederacy as did his younger brother Robert ( a doctor) and youngest brother Nicholas Biddle. The only brother that stayed with the Union was John Gibbon.

GIBBENS, GIBBON:
English patronymic from ‘Gibbon”, from a German personal name formed with ‘geba’, meaning gift. A common medieval personal name, ‘Gib’, is also a short form for Gilbert.
Hi
Just found your Bellingham post. I am descended from Mary Bellingham and Alexander Barham through their son Francis Barham. Details of the Barhams as you may have discovered are very sketchy prior to A and M's marriage, but there is much on the Bellingham's. It is reported they (and therefore us) are descended from the 'great' Bellingham family of Cumberland and Westmoreland (castles etc) via Sussex and several 100 years. If you have anything on the Barham's I'll be delighted to share all I have. My tree is Not on ancestry, but Genes Reunited.
Kind regards
Barbara

Elizabeth Gibbon(s) => SC => brickwall

I have a brickwall in my family and she is my Great-Great-Grandmother.

Elizabeth Ellen "Elsie" Gibbons

This is what I know:

She was born about 1859 in SC. I have found her on the 1860 census. I know that she got married to James "Jim" William Yarborough before 1876, being their first child was born in 1876 based on the 1880 census. I know they go on to have 2 maybe 3 more children. Lizze (I'm not sure where she fits in, thus not positve she's one of their children), John Preston (first born son, 1876), Mettie (abt. 1881) and Annie (abt. 1883).

No federal census for 1890.

By 1900, Her husband James "Jim" is listed being married to a Mary E. And there is a child born in 1891 (I'm assuming is the first child between Jim and Mary....they have 10 children total).

So I know ALL that about Elsie except I do not know when she died. According to one source she is burried at a small family cemetery. Only trouble is that she is in an unmarked grave. And yes, I have been there...no stone for her. The graveyard is not attached to any church (it was on family land). It's in the freakin middle on nowhere, so I do not even know if they had a church. SC did not mandate DC until 1915.

See my problem? I can't prove her death. Which normally wouldn't mind...However, I'm trying to prove this line for my second line for the DAR.

Any ideas or infomation would be very helpful.

thanks!
Edward GIBBON b. 1855-1858, and wife Margaret DAVIES- b. 6 JAN 1859 Ystradyfodwg, Glam., Wales >New Castle, Lawrence, PA 1881

Hi,
I have looked at the 1900 and 1910 US Census images for Edward and Margaret (DAVIES) GIBBON of New Castle, WD 5, Lawrence Co, PA. They came to America in 1881; are naturalized. The only children born in Wales were Ebenezer 1880 Wales, d. 1884; Thomas, b. 1881 Wales, d. 1955. I have looked at both censuses, and the children from William (b. 1883) down to Rebecca (b. 1902) were born in the US.
So they went back after Rebecca was born, and returned before the 1910 US Census. It just seems amazing that they had enough money to go back and forth with their children. They were also naturalized citizens by 1900. Or was it just Edward who went back to Wales and returned in 1905?

My second query is about the wife of Ebenezer GIBBON. The only Ebenezer GIBBON in the area of Glamorgan was my gg grandfather's brother. My gg grandfather was Edward GIBBON, b. Mar 1831, in Llanharan, Glam., Wales. Their parents were Edward and Rebecca (JENKIN) GIBBON.
1861 WALES CENSUS:
Ebenezer, b. Llanharan, Glamorgan, S. Wales about 1823. He is with a Mary, b. <1828> in Llanharan (spelling varies on the censuses)on the 1861 Wales Census, they are in Sub Registration District of Llantrisant, and Registration District of Cardiff - ED, Institution, or Vessel (13); and Household 285. This is his wife. She was with him in 1851 and 1861. They now have Evan <1850>, Edward <1855>, Mary <1853>, and Rebecca <1860>.
1881 Wales Census:
Edward GIBBON <1855> Llantrissant, & Margaret, b. <1859> Waunvo (**this is Wenvoe). They have two sons: Ebenezer <1880>, and Thomas <1881>. They are in Llantrissant, Reg. District of Pontypridd. 43 Cwmclydach St. AND Margaret's parents are at 50 Cwmclydach St..

Ebenezer GIBBON, the father of Edward GIBBON,listed in paragraph above, is at the home of Evan and Elizabeth RICHARDS, as a lodger. They are in Llantrisant, Registration District of Pontypridd. So he is not married, I take it.
I haven't seen Sarah JENKINS name on the censuses with him? I just found something you must have given to me previously. "Sarah JENKINS married Ebenezer GIBBON." Who got married in the Carmel Chapel, Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales - 20 JULy 1879. Says some info taken from JENKINS family Bible. By 1881, Ebenezer is alone. So I guess she died by the 1881 Census, or divorced? Did she die when having her second child in 1881?

Hope you can help.
I note you are looking for GIBBON from Glamorgan, Wales. The problem is that although I was born in Glamorgan, my father was not and none of his relations were from Glamorgan. The only places where the family appear to have lived are Anglesey, that is North Wales, from about 1823 on, and Merioneth which is Mid Wales before 1823.

Of course there were several of the GIBBON family who emigrated to America between 1850 and 1860 and they settled in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Sorry I cannot be of more help but best of luck to you in your searches.

Gibbon in London

I would like to connect with anyone researching William Gibbon(1817), who was married(1839) to Sarah Vezey(1824). I know for sure they had a son named Robert who went on to marry Henrietta Brown (went by Sarah) in 1876. Robert was my great grandfather.
I have found a family in the 1871 census that may be them (I haven't confirmed this yet, as they are listed as Gibbion). William (in 1869) had passed away by then so isn't listed, but the children listed on the census are Fredrick (20), Robert (17), Francis (8) and Arthur (4).
Robert and Henrietta's children were William Robert (1879), Francis Louise (1878), Arthur Frederick(1882), Charles Henry(1886), Eleanor Maud, George (1888) and twin Alfred Harold(died at 3 mos), Emily May(1889), and Sarah Alice(1894).
Any bells ringing?
Thanks

Hope to hear from you.
Make sure you capitalize the surnames which are mentioned in the subject and in the message too. I changed "Gibbon" to GIBBON on the subject. Do you know any birthdates?
Thanks.

I cannot help with specific names but you might find it useful to look at the Channel Islands (between England and France) as many person left France in the late 1700's to escape persecution and landed in the Channel Islands on the way to England. And Gibbon, Gibon, Gibben etc are likely to be anglicised versions of French surnames, eg Gibeaut?

My Gibbon ancestors landed in Jersey from somewhere in France, and had a child in 1798 in Jersey.

Benjamin GIBBON and Mary THOMAS - Wales to Luzerne Co., PA abt. 1857

Benjamin GIBBON and wife Mary THOMAS, both born in Wales, came over abt. 1857-1859. I saw a message from a descendant of this couple, stating they were buried in the Freeland Cemetery, Luzerne Co., PA. I have GIBBON and THOMAS relatives in this area and Carbon Co., PA, so I was looking at the censuses for them. My GIBBON family started with Edward GIBBON and Rebecca Matthews, who first located in Barnesville, Schuylkill Co., PA, then were in the Beaver Meadow, Carbon Co., PA and Coleraine, PA area.
I had a hard time finding my GIBBON family and this one too. I don't think Benjamin is related in anyway to my Edward GIBBON, b. 1831 Llanharan, Wales. When looking for these families, I found several transcription mistakes, or difficult writing on the images of the censuses which make it difficult to locate these families.
Below are the 1860-1920 Censuses of Benjamin and any of his sons. Transcribers have written the last name as "Given", "Gilon", Gibben", and the correct way. My family was found under Given, Gibon, Gibbons, too. So try any spelling variation you can think that is close.
Hope it helps!
----------------------------------------------------
1860 US Census: Eckley, Foster Twp., Luzerne Co., PA
Benjamin GIVEN -Dwelling #1195/ Family #1187.
age:36, b.
Hi Kerri

My husband Steve Gibbon is from Felling and has the Gibbon and Wardropper connections, although possibly a bit further back than yours.

I've found out the following info from Ancestry and FreeBMD, some other researchers may have already given you the info:

Michael D Kennedy born Gateshead 10a 1740 June 1926, mother's surname Gibbon

Ann W Gibbon married Michael Kennedy Gateshead 10a 1305 March 1925

Ann Wardropper Gibbon born Gateshead 10a 939 September 1904

I searched on Ancestry and FreeBMD for a match for a Gibbon and Wardropper marriage in the Gateshead area, but couldn't find any matches, but Anne's birth certificate would reveal her parents names. From my own experience, particulary in Scotland and the North-East of England, children were often given a middle name which was the mother's maiden name, or sometimes the paternal grandmother's surname, so Wardropper would fit in with being Anne's mother's surname.

My husband's family were from Felling/Gateshead, so there might be a connection with his grandfather Stephen Gibbon, who was born in Felling in 1899. His grandfather was also Stephen Gibbon who married an Ann Wardropper in Gateshead in 1857. I have some more info on the Gibbon and Wardropper families, and can go back a few generations, so let me know if there is any connection.
Also, my father-in-law would have been a contemporary of your grandfather Michael Kennedy, and would have lived in the same area until his death in 1996-his name was William Bell Gibbon, known as Billy, born in Felling in 1929-perhaps they were cousins?

Best wishes with your research

Jo Maslinska-Gibbon

Hello Kerri

Could this be Ann's birth registration?

Ann Wardroper Gibbon, jul-sep 1904, Gateshead district, vol 10a p 939

The birth cert will have both parents' names and her mothers' maiden name, which would help search for their marriage and census entries.

Does your Grandfather remember his Grandma's first name (on the Kennedy side)? The 1901 has this family living in Catherine Street, Felling
Michael Kennedy 36, barman, born in Felling
Teresa Kennedy, 34, wife, born in Felling

There is also a birth registration for a Michael Kennedy, jan-mar 1902, Gateshead district, vol 10a p 977.

Don't know if any of this helps.
Christine

I'm in Australia and i'm trying to trace my family back to england. My Grand father came out here after the war and i was able to get some information but i have hit a deadend. He was born in Felling Durham in 1926.But i can't find a record of his birth,(he is still alive so i know the details are right)I think i have found a record of his parents marriage but other than the date nothing to get me further. His name is micheal kennedy and so was his father and grandfather. His mother was Ann Kennedy (nee Gibbon)and her Mothers maiden name was Wardroper. I keep looking into the names but have no detail so how do i find out more?
Please help.
Thanks Kerri

I'm researching a William Gibbon family that was in London in the 1870's. Robert Gibbon was born around 1854 in London, married Sarah Brown in 1876 in Bethnal Green. His father was William Gibbon a warehouseman (taken from marriage certificate). I haven't been able to confirm Robert's mother, so can't confirm where in London he was born. Robert and Sarah had several children, one of which is my grandfather. Do you have any information on this branch of the Gibbon family?

Hello, Lucy!

I have brothers Robert Gibbon, born in Evenwood, Durham in 1819/20, and George Gibbon, born in West Auckland in 1826/27. Their father was also called Robert.

The brothers were both in Sunderland by 1851, but I have nothing, other than the above, on them or their family prior to 1851.

Do you happen to have anything that relates to them. Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Miriam Gibbon
