This surely is a delayed response, but just discovered your posting! I am told that my grandmother Catherine Cecelia Gibbons Brown 1869-1929, was related to James Cardinal Gibbons. her parents were of two different Gibbons families, one from Westport and one from Newport, Mayo. her brother's son was a lawyer in Philadelphia. His name was Walter Gibbons. He researched the family and found a connection to the Cardinal.
Two of my sisters actually saw his work. Unfortunatly, none of the family that is currently living knows where his work is located. I have the 2-volume books about his life and have the data on his parents, siblings and their families. Also know he had an uncle, Martin. Do you have any info about his father Thomas' family,-parents, siblings, etc.? Any info on this would be very much appreciatted!

Have you found anymore about your Gibbons/Barrett connection in Mayo, Ireland? My 2xGreat grandfather was Walter Gibbons b. Abt 1808, married to ? Barrett. He was from Newport, mayo,Ireland. His wife,s first name may have been Margaret Barrett. Walter,s occupation was farming. They both are buried in Ireland. Their children were: John b. Abt 1834, married a Mary Gibbons (different family from near Westport, Mayo. her father was David and his wife was Mary Ann Moran) ; Mary b. Abt 1836; Patrick b. Abt 1825 and married Mary Lee abt 1858 in Chester Cou, PA; and Catherine, b. Dec 1849 and she married Michael Dorsey in PA Abt 1871. Do you think there may be a link to your research?
Yes, I have researched my Gibbons family members In Mt.Carmel, Northumberland County, PA and have a large amount of data that I have been able to verify. However, I have not come across the name Rosanna yet. What time frame would she fall into? there were Gibbons' from two different Gibbons families that settled in that area of PA. Others from those 2 families went to Philadelphia, Ohio, and Minnesota that I know of.
They were VERY large families and lots of "name"duplication! They immigrated to the USA from County Mayo, Ireland about 1850. Helen

It appears that he is my 1st cousin 2x removed! I have the following info: Thomas F. Gibbons, b.19 Jun 1872 in Ireland; family immigrated about 1855; may have lived in PA for a time; his parents were Thomas (child of David Gibbons) and Mary Ann Reynolds Gibbons who lived in Mt.Carmel, PA (1870 census). In 1900 census they lived in Sparta Twp, Chippewa Cou, MN.
Rev. Thomas is listed in the Minnesota Death Index (1908-2002):Thomas Gibbons -death on Oct 13, 1922,Death County: Ramsey;State File #023543; Certificate #023543; Record #361552.

Also: From Mt. Carmel Newspaper, Wed., October 21, 1925: "Mrs. Frank Farley, of Minnesota, Montana and Mrs Patrick Gibbons of Philadelphia, are the guests at the home of John Gibbons, West Second Street. By an odd coincidence, Mrs Farley is a town visitor on the fiftieth anniversary of her wedding which took place here in the Church of Our Lady on October 21, 1875. Mrs Farley was formerly Miss Ella Gibbons of Mt. Carmel, a sister of the late Rev. Thomas Gibbons, who was one of the most prominent clergymen of the Roman Catholic Church in Montana. Mrs Farley's husband passed away a year ago. Mr. Gibbons and his guests left today for Shenandoah where they will visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Brown." (Mrs. Wm. Brown was Catherine Cecelia Gibbons Brown, and my grandmother.) Do you think this is a match? If so, I have more info on this family. Helen

I have a David Gibbons married to Mary Moran from near Westport, County Mayo, Ireland. They would be my 2nd great grandparents. They were born abt 1800. They had 7 children that I know of: Mary (my great grandmother)Mar 1825- Jun 1908; Bridget 1830 - ?; Thomas 1825 - aft 1910; Ellen Apr 1845-?; Anne 1843-?; Martin abt 1838-before 1900; and Michael, dates not known.

David Gibbons and Mary Moran's daughter Mary married a John GIBBONS (different family, from NEWPORT, Mayo). They left Ireland and were married on 19 Oct 1852 in Bedern, York, England. His father's name was Walter Gibbons and he married ? Barrett. (Her 1st name may have been Margaret.)
Walter Gibbons and ?Barrett had 4 children that I know of; John abt 1834-Feb 1878; Mary; Patrick; and Catherine. Do not know dates of the last 3 children.

John Gibbons/Mary Gibbons settled in Mt.Carmel, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, USA. They had 8 children; Margaret Aug 1852-aft 1930; Anna M. Dec 1855-Feb 1915; Patrick Henry Mar 1860-Jun 1945; John F. Dec 1862-aft 1930;Mary Dec 1864-Apr 1921; Ellen A. Aug 1865-Jun 1928; Catherine Cecelia (my grandmother) May 1869-Jan 1930; and Thomas, dates unknown. Catherine married a William J. Brown
in 1887. Much of this info is contained in a Biography of William Brown and I have a copy of this biography. It is very detailed about the Gibbons family and I have verfied sources that support the data in the biography. Please let mme know if any of this fits into your Gibbons/Moran family. Thanks.
Elizabeth,

I just replied to one of your messages posted to a different forum. But I forgot to mention in that reply that while I have very little information about Abel, I do know a bit about the ancestry of Eleanor. I know who her father and grandfather were, and have at least the first name for her mother and grandmother.

As I mentioned in the other reply, I very much look forward to learning more about Samuel and his descendants, as you are the first one descended from Abel's second wife Eleanor to contact me.

I do not know when or where he was buried, and certainly have not found a gravestone for him. I believe some of his descendants through Eleanor were buried in Riverview Cemetery in Northumberland County, PA. Perhaps he was also buried there, but so long ago that no stone survives.

I don't have a point of origin more specific that Wales, and all I know regarding the time of immigration is that he is recorded in Pennsylvania German/Lutheran church records as early as April 16th, 1758, so clearly he was here by then. But I don't know how much earlier than that he might have arrived.

Please contact me at mdtaffet@twcny.rr.com so we can communicate directly rather than through message boards.

-- Mary D. I wondered if the painter painted from you photo and changed it a little,...
Kursten

I have worked very hard on this line for well over 30 years. Louise S. and I used to search both separately and together on this family, although I haven't heard from her in some time. Other relatives have also contributed varying amounts of information over the years and their help has also been great help. Please get in touch with me! ;). I would love to learn what you have discovered, too!

Sandye

Arrena ?

One of their children is
Joseph Franklin Gibbons
b. 03 FEB 1839 in England
d. 23 JAN 1879 in Harlan, KY, USA
m. Rhoda Catherine Parris, 1865 in SC

Ulysses is the third great grandfather of my fiance. We live in KY and have pretty solid info up to Ulysses and then the trail runs cold. This is the Gibbons family that was part of the Hensley Settlement in the Cumberland Gap. Does this line up with anyone else's research?
