I am a descendant of Richard Gifford and Margaret Cann, via their son, John Gifford (born 6/25/1820 @ Parkham, Devon).

John Gifford married Elizabeth Anne Ashton. He emigrated to the USA in 1852, and she followed in 1856. Their son, Walter William Gifford (1859-1949) was my great-grandfather.

All of these people (and subsequent generations) lived in communities on the east side of Cleveland, OH. (Orange; Chagrin Falls; South Russell)

Regards,
Phil Bucher
Centennial, CO
philbucher@earthlink.net
Re: Montgomery, Elias A.

My g g grandfather Elias Montgomery was born in Ohio in Jan 1820. He first married Mary Ann Baird in Adams County Ohio and they had two children Mary and Joseph. She died when the children were very young and Elias remarried my gg grandmother Clarissa Clark. They had William, Francis (my g grandfather) Alice and Sarah. Clarissa raised his two children as her own. The family moved to Mo and lived in Vernon County. Elias died in 1903. I have not been able to trace Elias' parents or any of his siblings if there were any. I was told by a cousin whose family had done the DNA testing that Elias' DNA did not match the Montgomery line but more closely matched Pickle Gifford's line. Pickle lived in the same area as the Montgomerys. To make things more confusing when I was researching Pickle Gifford I learned that Pickle's DNA did not match the Gifford family. This leaves me perplexed but perhaps Pickle was Elias' father but the line was other than Gifford or Montgomery. I keep hoping to come upon someone who can help unravel this line. Thanks, Donna Wiltz

Hi,
I am researching my Grandma's family and I have pretty solid information unitl I hit the parents of Charles W M Gifford, 1863-1939. I found part of his obituary stating that he is the son of James and Cynthia (Alexander) Gifford. The problem is that I can't find a Cynthia anywhere, I have found a lead for a Rachel instead, with all the correct dates and places.
James was born in England and his wife was born in Ireland.
Is there anyone who recognizes these names? Any information will be helpful.
Thank you

Hello,

I am very interested in the source of your information about Silas's father being Silas also.

DNA testing has shown that Silas was a direct male descendant of Joshua5 GIFFORD (Sarah4, Jeremiah3, Robert2, William1 of Sandwich MA) of Dutchess Co NY, born say 1728 in Dartmouth MA. I have thoroughly traced Joshua's descendants and there are very few places where Silas could fit. One is as the son of Silas Devol8 GIFFORD (Isaas S.7, Amaziah6, Joshua5).

Silas Devol GIFFORD was living with his parents in 1850 in Westchester Co NY. In 1860 he was in Westchester Co with a wife Elizabeth but no children yet. I suppose that Silas Devol could have married a first wife shortly after the 1850 census and then moved to OH where your Silas was born. Maybe his wife died and he left Silas with relatives to go back to NY. The trouble with this theory is that Silas Devol GIFFORD left a will and no son Silas was mentioned.

Steve Warling

Hi. So glad to hear from some of Silas family. I have had the DNA testing done on one of Silas male descendants and somewhere way back there was a Gifford lady who had a son with a Mosher man. Silas DNA shows he is a MOSHER. I actually spoke to your ggrandfather years ago In CA, James Bertius Gifford who is Mckinleys son. He, however did not know anything about Silas parents. I have some history on Scott Burdette Gifford who was Mckinleys older brother. Would love to share notes. I have been trying for years to get past Silas and I think we are now limited by family notes if there are any out there. Thank you for contacting me

I have searched and searched for my husband's family and found Hugh who is a brother to his granddad and that Hugh was married to Sophronia Henney. I have found two wives before Sophronia. One was a marriage to Darcus Elizabeth Patton 17 Feb 1892 Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory - OK but I don't remember how I figured that out. In 1900 the census shows Township 12, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory HUGH IS APPARENTLY SINGLE HERE. ELIZABETH HAS MARRIED MCDOWELL AND TAKEN GEORGIA AND BESSIE WITH HER. Then in the 1910 census Durant Ward 1,Bryan,OK, these are the right kids and all, and names Hinkey as wife. Haven't chased that one.One of the kids Sennie McGinty is found with Grandma,Senney McGinty is listed in two different places for the 1910 census, the other one is Neorth Keokuk, Lincoln, OK with John and Maggie Kerns.I have simply copied everyone's hints and have not checked them out yet. Do not take any of this as correct but simply as leads to be checked out. Let me know if it helps you. Mary Ann McGinty

I'm looking for what became of William E Gifford, b: circa 1881 in IA, married 20 Jun 1917 in Denver CO to Maud Milliken b: Mar 1889 in IL. They had two daughters before they divorced in 1931: Wilma A Gifford b: 1918; Sylvia J Gifford b: 1920. The daughters may have been put into foster homes.
I can place your Abram GIFFORD. I never could find out what happened to Abram and now I know why.

About 1830 there was a list of minors in the Quaker monthly meeting minutes for Rensselaerville, Albany Co, NY. On it was Abram GIFFORD age 3. William and Mary GIFFORD were active members of this Quaker group and their son James married Sarah DENTON. This family lived in nearby Berne NY.

So Abram was the son of James7 (William6, Simeon5, Job4, Simeon3, Robert2, William1 of Sandwich MA).

First, Clay, thank you for asking the question about the ancestry of the Alabama John Gifford and for sharing your doubt that the online trees are accurate. As you have noted, the Alabama John S Gifford is not the son of Abraham and Lucy Sherman Gifford. Unfortunately, I do not know your ancestor's lineage. I suspect the proof of that is not online, but in probate and other records.

I have personally researched the descendants of Abraham and Lucy Sherman Gifford (my line), and in an earlier post, I offered the analysis of which John S. Gifford was their son in hopes that we could put to rest the errors in the online trees on your ancestor from Alabama. Apparently, there is still misinformation in the online trees. My analysis can be found on this Gifford Board at: http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.gifford/570.3.2.2.1/mb.a... and at: http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.gifford/570.3.2/mb.ashx

If I can help you sort out possibilities for your ancestor, let me know.

Judy

I am seeking information on John S. Gifford, who lived in Alabama, but was born in New York according to his headston which was a CSA memorial Headstone he was married to Eliza Jane Defoe. They are buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Florence, Alabama. John is my 3rd greatgrandfather and almost everyone I have found has posted his middle name as Sherman, but according to my 2nd great grandmother's (Martha Emeline Gifford Jenkins) death certificate his middle name was Sylvester. Also everyone who has a tree on ancestry that has him in their tree has his parents as Abraham Gifford and Lucy Sherman. If these are 2 different John S. Gifford's I would like to make any corections possible. Therefore, I am looking for any help I can find. Thank you.

Thanks for your response.
My gt grandmother was Alice Williams (married John Solomon)
born 1876 who was the daughter of Frederick Charles Williams and younger sister of Edith and older sister of Ethel.
I have a photo of Alice Williams. I have the marriage certificate for Frederick Charles Williams and for his father Daniel Pound Williams. The certificate states Daniel's father is William Williams but I been unable to find any information on him. I think Amelia's parents were James Franklin and Elizabeth ??.
I have not been able to find any information on Simeon Gifford.
If I have anything you would like I am happy to email it to you.

Sorry for the delay in replying.
Simeon Gifford married Amelia Franklin 03 Aug 1845 at St. Augustine, Bristol. His daughter Elizabeth married Frederick Charles Williams 12 Dec 1868 Register Office, Bristol. Their daughter Edith Blanche (27 Apr 1873) married Arthur Thomas Searle 20 June 1892 Hampstead. Edith & Thomas raised my father, William Crawley, after his mother (Ethel May) was unable to care for him. So far I been unable to find out much about Ethel but have done extensive research on the Gifford,Williams, Tingey & Searle families. Regards Moira Giddings.

There was a family of Giffords farming at Blackford, Somerset. We have an Eliza Gifford born about 1803 who married George Maggs, millwright of Zeals, Wiltshire. I think she had a brother William born in Blackford but who lived in Salisbury, Wilts. He is stated as a maltser and was married to Marie Rose who was born in France. Not sure who their parents were. Does this help?
