Johann Gilles (b 8/22/1778 Germany) married Margaretha Einig (b 5/5/1769 Germany). I have 3 children listed for them: Anton, Mathias, & Johann. I'm descendant through Johann.I think Johann Sr's parents were Mathias Gilles & Gertrude Weckber. If anyone has proof of who Johann Sr's parents are or more information on this family line (such as Johann and Margaretha's other children since I know about their son Johann Jr.), it would be appreciated.

Thanks
Paula Cary

Re: Nicholas Gilles family tree

John Gilles' first wife Mary Gully Jaeger died during childbirth of their son Mathias (b.26-May-1874 d.11-July-1886). John Gilles and Anna Richter (sometimes known as Mary Anna - hence easy to mistake as first wife Mary) first child together was Helena Anna b.10-Oct 1877 d. 15-Feb-1958 Helena Anna Gilles married my grandmother and her husband was Victor Weiler and they lived in the Athens, WI area. Their son Henry moved to Canada after John and Anna and some of the children. I found information showing that he moved to Canada - crossing the border on 19-Jul-1923 - arrival port of Gretna, Manitoba.

I'll look for that -- thanks! Our family started in the U.S. with 4 brothers in 1846. We can only account for descendants of three of them, the two who went to northeastern Iowa and the one who went to western Wisconsin. I keep hoping to find something about the fourth branch; so I will look carefully.
Catherine

My tree is from the Mt Calvary Gilles' (John Joseph Gilles and Anna Maria Neckel). We mostly stayed in the Fond du Lac/Sheboygan areas.I think some may have also went to Michigan. But thanks for the suggestion.

Paula Cary

Paula, I think we have a connection. You'll find what I think is the most accurate posted by "3053399." You'll find my contact info there and I would be delighted to correspond if you think that is your family. There are at least four different Gilles families that settled in that same part of Fon du Lac County so it gets a little hard to follow. We're missing a whole branch; so I hope you're on it.

Hi Paula,

My Gilles branch (through my great-grandmother Rose Wilhelmina Gilles) is from the Edson / Chippewa area of WI. She married into the Schneider family from St. Peter.

Her father Joseph Peter (my gr-gr-grandfather) was born in Mt. Calvary but the rest of my research shows that all the children were born in Edson. I do show a brother George in the 1860 census, aged 18 born around 1842. But I haven't included lines that far back in my tree. http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

Not sure if that's the George you're looking for.

Hi Michel,

Do you know a Catherine (Gilles) Schneider in your Schneider family. She married August Schneider. Catherine would have been a sister to my great grandfather Joseph Gilles who married Laurinda Kohlmann of Glenbeulah. If you know anything about her and that gilles family. There father was George Gilles of Mt. Calvary. It would be great to know more.

Thanks
Paula Cary

Hi Catherine,

We might be looking at the same family. My great grandfather was Joseph Gilles married to Laurinda Kohlmann from Glenbeulah, WI. I believe his parents were George and Mary Jacobs. And, then I get confused because I've found two different listings that are similar: John Joseph married to Anna Maria Rech and a John Joseph married to Anna Maria Neckel. I don't know which is the right one for my tree and was wondering if you have found more information that may be helpful to me. My grandmother has told me that we had relatives that lived in the Johnsburg/Malone area. Help please? :-D

Thanks
Paula Cary

Hello,

My great grandparents were Joseph and Laurinda Gilles of Glenbeulah, WI. I don't know much about Joseph's family. Just that my grandmother has said she had family from the Johnsburg/Malone area. In looking at other ancestral trees on this website, I am getting confused. There seem to be 2 sets of the same family with dates very close together; one living in Johnsburg area, the other in Mt Calvary. Could anyone help me distinguish if these are 2 separate families, or one in the same.

I think Joseph's parents may have been George and Mary (Jacobs) Gilles. And then George's parents may have been John Joseph and Anna Maria (Rech) Gilles or John Joseph and Anna Maria (Neckel) Gilles.

Please help.

Thanks much
Paula

Michel, go to WorldConnect at RootsWeb and search for Johann Gilles, born in Mayen 1778, spouse Einig and your Johann will pop right up. There are two different people doing research on this family and both give email contact addresses. That should help you a lot. Keep us on the list posted on your progress. We like success!

Thanks Catherine. I've been busy on other things for the last month or so, so my tree's been on hold for at least six weeks, I'm just getting back to it. So whenever you get some time is OK.

My great-grandmother was Rose Wihelmina Gilles (1889 - 1964), married Mathias W Schneider (1882 - 1940). Her parents were Joseph Gilles (1856 - 1920) and Wilhelmina Willmes (1861 - 1940). Joseph was born in Mt Calvary, then he moved to Chippewa Falls (where Rose was born) & he died up there. Rose later moved to the St. Peter / Mt. Calvary area.

Further back, I've got a Johann Gilles (b. 1778) who married Margaretha Einig (b. 1769) in 1805 in Mayen, Germany. But I don't know the accuracy. But John & Margaret, around the same time frame. . .

I have some Gilles notes from a family tree started back in the late 1970's by a distant Gilles relative. I'll look and see what I can find in there too.

Michel

Hi Michel,
"Married a Schneider and farmed up in St. Peter" has a very familiar ring to it and I am very willing to share. However, it will be at least next week before I get any time to go back to my family files and a few other things that I have that I know are not connected to my family. I just kept them in case someone would ever need them. So it would help if I knew your grandmother's given name and her line back.
My line goes back to John Gilles and Margaret (or Magdalen) Palms who were married in Schoenfeld (near Stadtkyll) in Germany in 1806. If that's your line you may have some things that will fill gaps in my information. I'm still looking for descendants of Paul Gilles, one of four young brothers who came here together in 1846. The tree (in need of updating) is available on World Connect.
Happy hunting!
Catherine

Hi Catherine -

Your comment on the four Gilles families in FDL County made me wonder about the people I've got saved in my tree.

My great-grandmother was a Gilles, and I do have her line going up. But I wonder if maybe I didn't pick up other Gilles families along the way, that maybe don't belong to my tree. She married a Schneider and farmed up in St. Peter.

Do you have any info on the four FDL Gilles families you could share?

Thanks!

Michel

Good luck, Katy. This can become a great adventure! One of the first things I discovered in my searching is that there are many more different Gilles families than I had thought -- probably not the news you would like to get. Sorting out just the four that settled in the same corner of Fond du Lac County in Wisconsin was a challenge. Follow-up info on what I had from local parish records was pure luck -- thanks to these message boards! I hope you will have the same and that some reader will see a connection between your information and hers. Yes, hers! Seems like more women than men are into this. Good luck!
Catherine

I am new to this whole thing and you are my first dip in the geneology pool but here goes. My grandfather was Clinton DeWitt Gilles. I beleive he was born in Minneapolis in the 1880's or 1890's. His father was some sort of preacher in Minneapolis . He had one brother whose name, I think, was Arthur who had one daughter named Gloria. I know that some of Grandfather's relatives lived in Iowa but I don't know where. He also had cousins whose last name was vonTobel who lived in South Dakota but I don't know how they fit in.

Does this fit into of your information? Please let me know. Also please give me any tips you might have on how to do this tracing thing.

Thanks,
Katy

Hello -

I am doing a little project and came across your post from 2003. I am looking for some tidbits of information about my grandfathers side of the family. I have almost nothing. My grandfather was Lincoln Bruce Gillies, who was born and raised in Calumet. He moved to Lansing with his wife Melida during the depression (1920s or 1930s). Lincoln and Melida had 4 daughters (Jan, Marj, Pam and Rosann). I know he had a sister named Margaret. I understand Margaret married someone by the last name of Gipp. Do you know if Lincoln Bruce Gillies might be a son, brother, or cousin of Gertrude Gillies? Please e-mail me at aawarriner@yahoo.com if you think there is any connection.

Aaron

What happened to first wife? Unable to find out as yet. Married to Anna Richter? Some records seem to have them as the same person. The second marriage was around 1892 it seems.

Would like details about his brothers Matthias and Frank. Matthias went to Montana, and Frank went to Pennsylvania. Would like to establish contact with cousins.
