Gillespie's from Lawrenceville, Illinois

Hi! I am trying to trace my husband's family. So far I think I have them traced back to 1775 but everything stops there. I was wondering if anyone could help if they are connected to the same family. He is also interested in finding where in Scotland his family originated from and their coat of arms. Here is what I have so far.

My husband's father is William T. Gillespie. He has a brother James and a half brother and half sister; Thomas and Linda. William's father is Thomas Leo Gillespie and his mother is Evelyn Chloretta Murphy. His parent's were Albert Gillespie, 1879-1907, and Effie (Could not find maiden name). Together they had Ethel, Edith, Albert Freeman, and Thomas Leo. Albert Gillespie's parents were Thomas Powell Gillespie, 1853-1929, and Lauren Kinkead (also known as Lorn). Together they had Thomas W., Anna, Henrietta, Thomas Powell, Albert, and Frank. All of the Gillespie's back to this point were born in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Thomas Powell Gillespie's parents were Samuel Gillespie, 1819-1888, and Ann Seed. Together they had Thomas, Rebecca, Emily, Ellen, Eliza Jane, Mary Ann, Henrietta, and Alice. Samuel Gillespie was born in Wheeling, West Virginia. This is the where I am struggling. I have found some references saying that his parents were John C Gillespie and Mary Gray both born around 1775 in Virginia and some other references, though I'm not sure if this is the right people, that they were from Ireland. This is where the trail goes cold. I know eventually, my husband's Gillespie roots trace back to Scotland, not Ireland but I can't find anything else about John and Mary or their families. If anyone can help please let me know. Thanks!
I'm researching my Irish Catholic Gillespies in the Pittston area (Jenkins Twp.) My g-grandfather was Patrick Gillespie who married Monica Morris, but I'm not having much success with Monica, I can't connect her with another Monica, I believe might be her mother. My grandmother, Mary V. Gillespie Jones had two brothers, Michael Gillespie and Peter Gillespie, who worked in the mines. Probably my g grandfather also worked in the mines.
I'm descended from a Gillespie, some in MA, OR & WA and I've been working on my family history for 17 years. Still working on my Gillsepies of course, they all have the same darn names! Grrrrr. They came to Scotland from somewhere in Ireland then to MA and then scattered to the wind. As a side hobbie, I find old photos with names on them and try to track down their relatives (probably because I was left with NO family photos)so if you would like to send them to me, if they are not mine, I will try to track down any living relatives. I do have an Ancestry subscription so will be happy to do the leg work. I'm at hefyfe at cox dot net. Contact me and I'll give you my address. Thank you, Heather

I'm still trying to find my connection to him. I do believe my William Abner's father was a William Gillespie also and married to an Elizabeth. We'll keep searching.

You would be wise to never count out Gillespie in any Glaspy or other spelling of the name in your research as the lines definitely do tie in at early dates.

They had a son William b. 1813 VA who married Elizabeth (Unknown). Could there possibly be a link?

Looking for my Gillespie family from Laurens Co, SC

My grandmother was Bessie Gillespie and her death certificate says she was from Laurens County, South Carolina. I think her mother's name was Della Couch Gillespie. Della was supposedly from Spartanburg, SC. Her father's name, according to Bessie's death certificate, was James Gillespie. But Della's obituary says her husband was William Gillespie. However I can't find either man's name connected to Della or Bessie. I do know Bessie had a younger brother, Albert and sister, Mary. I believe Della, Bessie, Albert and Mary all moved to Greenville County, SC between 1920 and 1930. Does anyone have ANY information on this branch of the Gillespie family?? Or the Couch family?? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Sherry

Thanks for your quick reply Sherry. As of yesterday I found that the last name I am looking for is not Gillespie, it's Glaspie. Thomas Milton Glaspie was born 10-22-1915 in Bowie, Cochise co. Arizona and died probably in Lane county, Oregon. By 1944 he had married Elsie Viola Crawford, born 8-26-1906 in Oklahoma and died in November of 1981 in Springfield, Lane county, Oregon. Elsie Crawford was first married to a Unknown Dennie, then Tom Glaspie and lastly to John Rice. I am looking for any connection to any of these families. Tom Glaspie and Elsie had a son named Tom Glaspie Jr. who was born Sept. 14, 1944(probably Oregon) and died abt. 1988 in Deer Lodge, Powell co., Montana. In the late 50's, early 60's Elsie and Tom lived in Springfield,Lane county, Oregon next to my now deceased in laws. That's how I ended up with the pics. Some of the other surnames in the pictures are Morgan, Searles and Cox along with a grandma Herion. Cheryl

I have 200+ pictures of Tom Gillespie and wife, Elsie Unknown. Some pictures include Tom Jr. Elsie had a 1st unknown marriage, then married Tom Gillespie and lastly married John Rice. This family lived in Springfield, Drain and Cottage Grove, Lane county, Oregon. They may have lived elsewhere too of course. These pics were found in my deceased in laws home. The Gillespie family were friends with my in laws and are no relation to my knowledge. I would like to place these pictures with the right family.
I would guess Tom Gillespie was born in the early 1920's. Cheryl

Eleanor died in Bath County, KY in July 1817. Her Gillespie husband predeceased her. I'm guessing that she was born anywhere from 1767-1783, based on the birthdates of their children.

Their children were Ann, b. 1800 in VA; Jonathan, b.1804 in VA; Rebecca, b. 1810.

Thank you,
Michelle

Am wondering if you have come up with anything new on William Abner Gillespie. I am reading an old notice I received in 2009 that said that he was born in Culpepper Co., VA in 1790. This may be true as I had seen a note in Barton Papers in Falmouth, KY saying his family owned land that Culpepper Co. courthouse was later built on. We have been using Albemarle Co. as his birthplace but not sure. I know he and Patsy Hundley were married there. Family DNA testing goes back to a George Gillespie of Amhurst/Albemarle, VA. Do you have anything new?

There is a court record dated 1860 that names him, so he was alive at that point. Supposedly he was the son of John Gillespie, mother unknown. Any wife and children are also unknown.
This problem appears to have been solved, we think. The problem as stated assumed there was only one Thomas Gillespie, but that was not the case. There were TWO Thomas Gillespie's - one who traveled all the way from Ireland to Michigan to settle his inheritance. It was Thomas-from-Ireland who was the brother to both Nancy and Elizabeth. Nancy, we're guessing, married a cousin also named Thomas Gillespie. Thus the confusion.

Simon Peter Gillespie was the son of Peter and Bridget Gillespie, who came from County Cork. Attached is his marriage license to Sarah Norwine, their headstone in Mt. Olivette Baptist Cemetery, near Clinton, Missouri where they are both buried. He and Sarah relocated to Missouri prior to the 1900 census (where he's found in Russell, Camden Co., MO). A copy of a tintype of Simon Peter Gillespie is also attached. He and Sarah are my great-grandparents.

Hello all, I have hit a wall in trying to trace back my family tree.

I know my family comes from Fortune Harbour, Newfoundland. My grandfather James Gillespie was born 1897 to William Gillespie and Mary Power. Both of them were born 1857, records indicate they were born in Fortune Harbour but I'm not sure how accurate that is. I'm fairly certain William's mother was Mary as well. And my father is fairly certain the spelling of the last name was changed from Glasby to Gillespie.

The family is Roman Catholic but its been hard to find Catholic records. So I haven't been able to find a birth record for William as of yet.

WOW awesome info. Are you related? Henryetta was my grandmas sister. My grandma was Stella Gillespie Richardson. I know it sounds funny that she'd be my grandma but in my family on my parents side it seems to be a common thing to marry later in life. If you are related do you have any info on Luther Evans? He married one of my grandmas sister's but right at the momment can't think of her name. I have some info on Madrid (grandmas sister). Emma was a Props before marrying or so I've been told. I've come across the last name a few times. Thanks so much. I am sorry it took so long to respond but this is the first chance I've really had to get on the computer. I hope you have had a wonderful Thanksgiving I your info is greatly appreciated.
